UFC 84: Shane Carwin vs. Christian Wellisch

Shane Carwin (8-0) will make his Octagon debut against Christian Wellisch (8-3) at UFC 84: "Ill Will" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 24, according to multiple reports.
Carwin — a Western State College NCAA Division II national wrestling champion and two-time football All-American — is a top heavyweight prospect who has gone undefeated in smaller promotions with the guidance of veterans such as Ron Waterman and Nate Marquardt.
He's an extremely athletic fighter who has drawn comparisons to Brock Lesnar. Carwin, however, has more mixed martial arts experience. In fact, he has finished all of his opponents in the first round with a mix of knockouts and submissions.
If he can replicate those results inside the Octagon ... watch out. Carwin appears to have some serious potential to make waves in a division that sorely needs it.
Wellisch is a law school student who has won two of his three fights with the UFC. He most recently submitted Scott Junk with a heel hook at UFC 76: "Knockout" back in September 2007. He also earned a unanimous decision over Anthony Perosh at UFC 66: "Liddell vs. Ortiz II" back in December 2006.

Oleg Taktaov talks Fedor, Shamrocks, and a bunch of other stuff, its a really interesting Read, and he isnt a bad actor either.
Here are some snips:
On Ken and Frank Shamrock…
“I like Ken, but what I can say is when you’re talking about Frank Shamrock and Ken Shamrock, Ken always acted like he knows everything and Frank would be quiet and learn things, practice things and try to get a style down and learn from his mistakes. I have to give credit to Ken because he’s 44 and he’s had some good fights in the recent past, but I’m pretty sure if he used his natural ability and his desire to fight, he would’ve did so much better. Ken made some of the mistakes [alleged steroid use] I mentioned earlier. His body would be more together right now and I think that’s the only reason he’s losing.”
On Fedor…
“He’s a great man and he likes to keep his word. Like the last time he competed in Combat Sambo in Moscow. He was sick really badly and he was still fighting and he could’ve really damaged his heart and health. He fought just to keep his word and people thought he didn’t have it anymore just because he was sick. The best thing about Fedor is he trains like a madman and he’s going to win. He trains in the right places and he always gets good conditioning in the mountains.”
On Dan Severn…
“I didn’t want to just submit him. I wanted to break the leg because it was the leg that cut my forehead. I was too greedy. I didn’t want to submit him. I wanted to break the whole leg and I changed positions and didn’t really have control of his leg. It was my mistake. I should have just won the fight. I don’t feel like I have any problems with Dan, but there are some people I’d like to fight again.”

I’ll get there. But Strikeforce re-runs at 1 am on Saturday nights is not exactly earth shattering news “buddy.” Plus it was announced last night on the UG … so you’re a tad late my friend.

By the way John have you heard of a game called WMMA (World Of Mixed Marttial Arts).
It would be interesting to see how well you do in it. Its more of a stratergy game than anything but quite smart and comprehensive for the low budget allowed.

r u serious? is this a real game?

Carwin is 8-0 with none of his fights lasting even 2 1/2 minutes. Lesnar is probably the most athletically gifted fighter in the UFC. A few more guys like that and the HW division will be repaired.

WOW it is a real game. Thanks for the heads up. Its not a fighting game. Its like you are the president of a major organization and you have to negotiate and sign with fighters, deal with sponsors, and match make! Too bad they dont use real fighters name, but charecters are inspired by real fighters.
I will tell you one thing, I could definitely negotiate with the Russians better than Dana White, i would start the meeting off by pouring a few rounds of Smirnoff Vodka, and it will be smooth sailing from there on out!

I don’t understand how the UFC treats some of it’s HWs. With the division as empty as it is, you figure someone with 2 wins like Wellisch would be fighting on the main card. Try to give them some exposure, so they can go for the title. Instead, you see one HW fight every 3 or 4 PPVs. I know HW fights can get boring (ie. Sao vs Eddie Sanchez), but the only way to make the division look more exciting is to show more of their fights.

fedor Close To Signing With Ufc???*
http://www.mmafightline.com/news/200…o_318666.shtml
Sources close to negotiations between the UFC and Fedor’s management have informed MMAFightline.com that the two sides are currently discussing a possible one fight deal that would bring Fedor to the cage, presumably to face Randy Couture.
It is unknown whether Couture would end his lawsuit and come back to the UFC to face Fedor if the UFC were able to offer such a fight, but Couture has stated on numerous occasions that this is the only fight that makes sense at this stage of his career.
It should be noted that nothing is eminent at this point and negotiations are in the general discussion phase. If made, however, the deal would be unprecedented. The UFC is notorious for locking up fighters in long term deals and not allowing them to leave as champions. We’ll have more on this story as it develops.

I’m opposed to this. I want Cuban to get the fight and have it at American Airlines Center.

i could see it happening that way as a 1 fight deal as long as its not for the title. thats what probably worried dana so much w/fedor and his non-exclusive contrtacts. at this point dana has to make this happen.

i’m wondering about the couture lesnar fight cause it’ll really show strong wrestlers to be dominant if couture loses to a greenhorn – although that is debatable considering his age.
I’d be more taken aback if lesnar beat gonzaga, werdum or nog – I DOUBT THAT VERY VERY MUCH. In some ways the Matt Hughes era seemed over, but MMA is so interesting
