UFC 83 card complete for Montreal PPV event on April 19

UFC 83 Tickets
The well-known 11-bout line up for UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2" was today confirmed and finalized via UFC.com for the pay-per-view (PPV) event that is slated for the sold-out Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, on April 19.

It's the first ever show for the promotion in Canada and the fight card is packed with "local" talent. No one is more popular, however, than the Saint Isidore native and UFC interim welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre.

"Rush" will be eager to avenge his loss to Matt Serra back in April 2007 and hoist the undisputed 170-pound belt toward the rafters before an extremely friendly crowd of thousands.

Meanwhile, Serra will look to play the role of spoiler—or "Rocky" if you ask him—and shock the MMA world once again with a win.

Here's the rest of the UFC 83 card:

Main card (televised):

185 lbs.: Rich Franklin (22-3) vs. Travis Lutter (9-4)
185 lbs.: Kalib Starnes (8-2-1) vs. Nate Quarry (9-2)
185 lbs.: Michael Bisping (15-1) vs. Charles McCarthy (10-4)
155 lbs.: Mac Danzig (17-4-1) vs. Mark Bocek (5-1)

Under card (may not be broadcast):

185 lbs.: Jason MacDonald (19-9) vs. Joe Doerksen (39-11)
185 lbs.: Alan Belcher (12-4) vs. Jason Day (15-5)
155 lbs.: Sam Stout (13-3-1) vs. Rich Clementi (30-12-1)
170 lbs.: Jonathan Goulet (21-9) vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka (11-4)
265 lbs.: Cain Velasquez (2-0) vs. Brad Morris (10-2)
185 lbs.: Ed Herman (14-5) vs. Demian Maia (6-0)

Weak card imo :(

I dont see Serra lasting through more than 2 rds against GSP, early rd TKO by Rush…everything else will be kinda boring

I hope Rich Franklin and Danzig put on a good show

theres a couple of good fights but nothin great, of course i want to see serra vs gsp but that could also be a blow out.might be a weak night.

Weak card? All the 185lb fights should be entertaining as hell. This is a GREAT card for MMA fans, lots of different styles, and a great banger fight in Starnes-Quarry… Great wrestler fight in Bocek-Pita boy, Stout Clementi should be great.. Derkensen-McDonald will prolly be worth watching… And the McCarthy-Bisping fight should be great too.
This card is REALLY solid.

This does look a weak card but remember the last weak looking card…..UFC80!!!

The GSP vs Serra fight is worthy of watching on its own.

Rich Franklin comes back to victory.

Mac Danzig

Michael Bisping sucks.

If Joe Silva would have mixed and matched the fighters better, it would have been a much better card. First oFF, Bisping should be fighting Belcher and Danzig should be fighting Sam Stout.

MANIA, Can you help me out a little, how does the ufc determine what fights go on the undercard an witch will be on t.v? IMO the fight card is o.k but compared to the last couple of events ant the upcoming events i can see how people will say this card isn’t that great.but I do see GSP winning this one I bet on Serra last time out and won real big but not this time GSP will win he has a look of death in his eyes. he is ready for this fight and imo matt hughes would of beat serra!!!!!

Not real impressed with the card as a whole, probably go to the local hooters for it or soemthing, the GSP/Serra fight obviously and the Rich Franklin fight I wanna see, but it looks like GSP will suffer teh same fate Penn did at 80, carrying the weight of the whole event on his back, the card lacking a lot of other named fighters. Still wont miss it though

by The Anomaly on Mar 10, 2008 6:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

really? c’mon. to be honest, the fight night has a better line-up

I’ll back that up. But again, wont miss this one. Starnes and Quarry don’t interest me much, not true contendars as of now, and never been known for being really exciting. And like John said, some of the fighters looked mis-matched, I would of rather seen Danzig agaisnt better and more known competition, same with Bisbing, but I hate Bisbing so that fight does nothing for me.

The undercard is better than the televised card… Same thing happened at UFC78…

1. Ed Herman vs whoever is always entertaining
2. The debut of Cain…..
3. Hironaka can bang it out for a little guy
4. Sam hands of stone strikes very well is always fun to watch.

Hahaha..I have to agree. And Hironaka is a pretty pale Japanese guy.

Being in Canada and all, it stands to reason they would stack this card full of homeland fighters. But its kind of weird to see a UFC card without one Brazilian fighter.

GSP KOs Serra.
Hughes ground and pounds Serra Gracie style.
Hughes stands and strikes Kos in the 2nd.
Hughes retires and goes to the UFC Hall of Fame.
GSP to 185 to face The Spider…

GSP AND SERRA just dont think it will be all that exciting, it will be fast no matter who wins. I will not be buying this one…dont think its worth the money. Looking forward the free one though, great card in april! also elitexc on showtime later in march, will also be looking forward to watching it.

This isn’t the best card, but realistically…If you were Dana White and the show sold out why add anything else great? He added to the fight night card that wasn’t sold out. I’d do the same if I were him. Sucks for people like me that bought tickets, but all I want is to watch GSP handle Serra.

i seriously couldn’t give a rats ass about seeing bisping/mccarthy OR starnes/quarry. those are some lame fights right there.

i dunno, it’s a pretty lame card. they should bump doerkson/mcdonald up for sure. overall i think this card is a testament to st. pierre’s draw power. the dude is a huge star on the brink of liddell status and more if he pounds through serra. also, i’m pretty psyched to see franklin back in the mix and against a good guy like lutter makes this card, along with the title fight, bearable.

I’m really hoping some of the non-televised fights will be shown. I’m thinking Stout vs. Clementi has real possibilities. McDonald vs. Doerksen might be a decent fight too.

I’m going to be bitterly, bitterly disappointed if GSP doesn’t kick the stuffing out of Serra. I love a good underdog story as much as the next guy, but not when the underdog comes across like jerk. Funny thing is, I’d probably like Serra if I ever met him in person. Go figure… :/

by BigRedOne on Mar 11, 2008 12:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And another thing, how does Kalib Starnes get a televised fight, but not a bunch of better fighters on the undercard? Must be because he’s riding Nate Quarry’s coat tails.

I’ve got to think that Quarry is going to completely OWN Starnes…

Has anyone noticed that all the cards loaded with big names tend to suck? Many of the best cards are the ones without a big name (or two) in every fight. Just as some of the best fights tend to be on undercards and (or) involve previously unknown fighters. Who the hell is Tim Bosch?!

I can’t wait to see gsp totally dismantle serra, I wish I could see the faces of the serra fans and gsp doubters after the fight. If gsp could throw hughes around like that, your a complete idiot to think he couldn’t do that to serra or anyone else in the welter weight division. I see gsp taking serra down, catching him off guard and mounting him, and pounding him out until the ref jumps in to save serra, I said it first.

I still would have rather seen Bisping vs. Belcher and Danzig vs. Stout.

Although Danzig won the TUF show, he is a very experienced fighter who has fought in a cage many times already. I think that he could beat any of the lightweights on this card, so instead of fighting Bocek, he should be fighting Stout, who I think he would beat anyway!

You would think that the first UFC to take place in Canada would have a stacked card. Sure, there’s a bunch of Canadian fighters on the card, but it isn’t a marquee card in my opinion.

You would think that the first UFC to take place in Canada would have a stacked card. Sure, there’s a bunch of Canadian fighters on the card, but it isn’t a marquee card in my opinion.

GSP vs. Serra is clearly worthy and neccassary to clear up the mess Dana made at welterweight by having the TUF show hold up the title for so long and then giving away a interim title for no apparent reason, like GSP really needed 5 rounds to whoop on Hughes! lol not even close!

You are right! It all starts with the lackluster main event, I mean Franklin vs. Lutter isn’t all that appealing to me.

Bisping vs. Tuppaware, does anyone really care? Should have been Bisping vs. Belcher!

Danzig should be fighting Stout instead of Bocek. Danzig has tons of experience and I think he could beat any lightweight on the card, so why have him face the worst (Bocek)?

kalib vs. Quarry will be a good match, but a fight like that belongs on a UFN event not on a main card of a pay per view.

This event started with a lot of hype, but as time went by the card got worse and worse. Then again the way the UFC thinks, just g ive em GSP and it will sell out, so I am not surprised that this card isnt up to par with the recent cards! Its no secret that the best fight cards are reserved for USA events, mainly Vegas and Ohio, definetly not Jersey.

The tri state area is in the Canada category in the UFC’s eyes.

Its no secret that the best fight cards are reserved for USA events, mainly Vegas and Ohio, definetly not Jersey.

The tri state area is in the Canada category in the UFC’s eyes.

I totally agree. People r gonna want to see serra get it handed to him. Ufc knows this so they fill up the card with all the Candadians they can find and call it a day.

The England card with is even worse. Of course if Dana could ever get Chucks bag out of his mouth maybe we would get a real fight instead of sugar. That is garbage.

I wont even go to the bar for that one. Might catch the main event on utube to see chuck knock him out or watch rashad lay on him for 3 rounds.

GSP vs Serra 2 is going to be really interesting. I didn’t buy their last fight and regret it. I’m not going to say Serra has no chance like the first time. If Serra does win, it’s going to be crazy. For Matt Serra to be the guy that has GSP’s number, that’s just weird…

hope it doesn’t happen. i still want to see Serra vs Hughes as well as GSP vs Fitch (or Karo (2), i don’t know who is first)

i THINK YOUR THE ONLY OTHER PERSON THAN ME GOING FOR LUTTER.

I just think that the first fight with Silva knocked his confidence and the second fight knocked the remaining confidence he had. Franklin doesn’t seem to be the same person, maybe it is because how easily Silva dealt with him, who knows. Franklin will get the confidence back, I just feel it won’t be in time for the Lutter fight.

I think as far as it being a weak card…..Not true….You guys are selling the talents of alot of these fighters short. Every fighter has issues fighting different styles of fighters…..Yeah GSP may be a better fighter than Serra, but look at what happened the first fight….Cain Velasquez should put on one hell of an Exciting fight….This guy is a hell of a wrestler, and trains at AKA……I look for this to be a good card, and think there will be some upsets on this one…..

Thank god for sports bars that buy the UFC pay per views because this card is pretty weak. I can’t see myself paying for this Sh*t.

It’s always the card you least expect to be decent that turns out to be great with the exception of 78.

It may not be a great looking card on paper but it should still provide some entertaining matchups. I’m looking forward to it since I’m going and this will be my first ever UFC event…so I’m excited to see the whole card.

I can’t believe how many people are on the serra train, LOL, obviously new to MMA, I’ve see plenty of buster duglas’s in MMA and serra is one of the biggest. Gsp will not make the same mistakes as the first time, he’s going to stay clear of the pocket, pick off serra at long range and over power him on the ground, just wait.

Miscarriage of justice that J-Mac isn’t on the televised card.

If you are into betting, put some money on Jason “Dooms” Day. He’s not so bad and he’s got some momentum. He could take it.

Welcome to the Great White North to the UFC and fans from the US and around the world.
We’re really pumped to host our first UFC event in Canada.
Of course MMA is not new to us. A lot of fans here.

Fight predictions… feel free to reply with yours…

*Matt Serra wins over GSP by rear naked choke in rd. 1
Matt Serra is THE most under-rated fighter in the UFC. Serra was well on his way to a title shot when he ran into Shonie Carter’s “Hail Mary” spinning back fist. A couple tough fights following against top competition Din Thomas, BJ & Parisian derailed his momentum. The appearance on TUF reingigorated his career, and he is not going to let GSP take it all away now
*Travis Lutter over Franklin by submission
Franklin has nothing to answer Lutter’s ground game and will suffer a humiliating defeat here.
*Quarry by TKO over Starnes
All Quarry has to do is punch him in the gut…he’ll quit.
Never seen such a display of cowardice in MMA. As soon as the fight is not going his way, look for Starnes to find a way to quit.
*Bisbing over McCarthy. TKO
Bisbing is over-rated, but as long as the UFC is intent on making inroads into the UK market, they need British content.
That’s why they’ve givin him this walk in the park.
*Danzig (close)decision over Bocek
Danzig will have his hands full with Bocek. This could be the highlight fight of the night.
*Sam Stout WILL beat the snot out of Rich Clementi KO.
No doubt Rich has the advantage on the ground, however Sam has a great sprawl and can defend well against the take down. Sam has fought WAY tougher guys than Clementi. I like Clementi, but he’s in way over his head in this contest.
*Belcher by stoppage over Day.
Day gets this fight after his win over an uninspired David Loiseau. He won’t have that kind of luck here. Belcher will show up.
*McDonald over Doerkson AGAIN!!!
*Herman vs Maia
This could be an upset. Maia is unbeaten and could present a real challange to Herman. I’m picking Maia.
*Goulet’s a stiff, but they’ve givin him another stiff to fight. Look for him to eat a big shot and wake up with a crowd around him
