Paulo Filho vs. Chael Sonnen rematch on for March; WEC announces complete fight line up
Despite numerous reports that he was postponing his rematch with Chael Sonnen (19-9-1) on March 26, WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho (14-0) will indeed headline the upcoming WEC event as scheduled.
In addition, the WEC announced the entire March fight card this week.
Filho's participation in the March event was confirmed by his manager, Ed Soares, in an interview with Sherdog.com on Thursday afternoon. Reports that he would exercise a clause in his contract to postpone the bout until June because of depression appear to be inaccurate.
Here's a snip from Soares:
"He went through some personal issues, and he basically pulled everything together. During difficult times you get to see who your true friends are, and everyone is coming together to help him get ready for this fight."
After a lackluster round and a half in their first encounter, Filho won the December 2007 contest after catching Sonnen in an armbar at the end of the second round. Sonnen refused to submit when asked repeatedly by the referee; however, he stepped in and stopped the bout after Sonnen unleashed a scream that was audible to those even watching on television.
After protesting the decision, the WEC granted Sonnen an immediate rematch based on the controversy.
The WEC: Filho vs. Sonnen II bill has another championship bout come fight night. WEC Light Heavyweight Champion, Doug "The Rhino" Marshall (7-2), a winner of three in a row, against Brian "All-American" Stann (5-0). The Rhino -- known more for his punching power -- showed his submission game in his previous title defense with a quick, first round armbar victory over Ariel Gandulla.
Stann is a true American hero. A former first lieutenant in the US Marine Corps during the Iraq War, Stann received the Silver Star for bravery in battle. Turning pro after coming home from Iraq, the "All American" has compiled a perfect record with all of his fights ending in first round knockouts.
The undercard showcases some rising WEC stars.
Two undefeated lightweights, Ed "9mm" Ratcliff -- fresh off his win over Alex Karalexis -- and Marcus "The Wrecking Ball" Hicks look to climb up the ladder. Light heavyweight up-and-comers Steve Cantwell and "The Wrecking Machine" Tim McKenzie will lock horns in a fight with title implications.
McKenzie is actually the last man to beat current WEC light heavyweight champ Doug Marshall
Former WEC welterweight challengers John Alessio and Brock Larson square off in a much anticipated match. Sergio Gomez faces a tough challenge in former WEC lightweight contender Richard Crunkilton. Unbeaten welterweight prospect Ryan Stonitsch makes his WEC debut against the crafty Alex Serdyukov. Rising American Top Team lightweight juggernaut Chris Manuel puts his undefeated mark on the line against Japanese standout Kenji Osawa. And middleweight prospect Logan Clark steps to undefeated Bryan Baker in n opening bout.
WEC: Filho vs. Sonnen II takes place at "The Joint" at Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday, March 26. It will air on the Versus network at 10 p.m. ET.

Awesome, that fight should have a rematch so Filho can train properly and break Sonnen’s arm this time. Does anybody honestly think it was a bad stoppage?? The look on Sonnen’s face was that of excruciating pain.

I feel bad for Filho.. guy is amazing. But like so many other hard training athletes, depression can sink in. Hope he gets help when he needs it, amazing talent that should be around for a long time.

I agree that this time Filho will rip the arm off and take it with him so there is no controversy…

I think Sonnen was about to get his arm broken but he might have fought through it and KOed Filho anyway. I call Sonnen winning this one, then I’d say he should get Silva.

It was a terrible stoppage. The guy didn’t want it stopped and was trying to survive the round, which was only a few seconds away from ending. If he did want it stopped, he wouldn’t have been bitching about it afterward.
I hope Sonnen crushes Filho.

Absolutely, that was a bad stoppage. In a regular fight maybe it’s OK, but in a championship fight that Sonnen was easily winning to that point, the ref should have given him every chance to survive the last few seconds of the round and continue, especially when Sonnen clearly said no, he did not want to quit. And to everyone who thinks Doug Marshall is a tool who should get KTFO . . . you’re all right.

Paulo’s last fight at Middleweight, win or lose. Part of the reason he was so dead in his last fight was becuase he was so drained from cutting the weight. Admit it, that wasn’t the Paulo Filho we used to see in Pride and JF. And he also got rocked when Chael first took him down and dropped him on his head. Everything together resulted in the poor preformance. I’m stoked on the move up to light heavyweight, he’ll be small but look at what Hendo’s accomplished.
by Luke-O-Plata on Mar 7, 2008 5:38 PM EST reply actions
Just for the record, the first fight should have been stopped. You can’t be screaming in agony while someone is about to break or hyperextend your arm and expect the fight to continue. It’s irrelevant whether he was saying he wanted to quit. The fight should have been stopped and he has the ref to thank for his healthy arm. Dana said he agreed with the stoppage, the only real problem is Sonnen was crying that he was saying no, and that the ref shouldn’t have stopped it but he can shut up with that crap. Chael looked impressive but that doesn’t change the fact that he gets lazy on the ground and you can’t do that against a guy like Filho. That’s why he lost and if he’s smart he’ll just bang it out with Paulo ‘cause the guy looked like shit on his feet in the last fight. It was like he didn’t even show up so it’s a real gift to be fighting him again after he lost fair and motherfuggin square.

Bad weight cut for Filho. Bad performance by Filho. Bad decision by a dominant Sonnen to go to the ground. Bad stoppage by the ref. Good rematch.
I keep waiting for Marshall to be derailed (by anyone please), but so far he has answered every call (a sub his last time out). He is in the wrong weight class and will be defeated, but hey, that is why they fight the fights.

i just don’t like the way he acts. but the vocal minority i’m not a big fan of. the kind that act like they were the bullies in high school and think that because they are bigger than anyone else they can act how they want. this is the way Stann acts in his interviews. who knows, maybe i’m wrong and he isn’t like that when not on camera, but still he rubs me the wrong way.

err part of my comment went missing. i meant to say that there are a lot of cool marines out there, but you never hear from them, but its the vocal….

Chael had him the first time. UPSET. Sonnen over Filho!
Who cares if Paulo Filho wins? If he does, there’s no hope for a Filho/Silva MW showdown.
That would be an awesome fight. Silva would smash him probably though.

Sonnen is an unbelievable wrestler but like all Team Quest fighters they are vulnerable to submissions.

They implemented rules for a reason. They got away from the old school MMA no rule no hold barred for a reason. So they can get these fights sanctioned. Filho was ripping his arm out. And the only reason he does not have a nurse wiping his ass for him and using his left hand to maturbate(The Stranger, lol) instead of his right is because the ref stopped it. It was the same thing for Tim Sylvia when he fought Franlk Mir, he did not let a peep out but Mir broke that wing in half, the ref stopped. The ref is there to maintain the integrity and health of the fighters and the sport. People do stupid things when there adrenalin is going, like not tapping out while your arm comes out of its joint, hyper-extended at the elbow, or your skull happens to be hanging out above your eye. It has taken almost 20 years for MMA to become a legitimate and now the fastest rising sport in the world. It takes one foolish fighter or referee fighting through some pride issues, getting severly mamed, hurt, or worse yet killed in the ring to take the sport back into the dark ages of the early 90’s where noone will sanction these fights. I’ll be the first to admit that old school MMA with no weight classes and anything goes was great, but it sure would suck to only get one or two PPV per year because some meathead thought he could last in the ring another 20 seconds…

Aren’t Silva and Filho in the same fight camp? They might not fight each other if that is the case. I know MAchida is with Silva, I am pretty sure Filho is to. Same camp battles rarely happen. Besides, Slva would crush him like a egg. He has 100 times the stand up ability-we all know Filho is not most impressive on his feet and Silva has got an incredible ground game. That fight would not last 2 rounds. Silva would have him eating knees relativly quickly.

ya, i was really looking forward to silva/filho in the future, but if he puts on another awful performance against sonnen i have no doubt silva would smash him.. and no i am not one of the fans that think a fighter is washed up or done if they have a couple bad fights in a row, i just think silva in his prime against filho during his “mental problems” would be bad

I think its funny how everyone says how great Big Nog is because he takes his beating and just waits for his opponenent to make a mistake and then he capitolizes. Fihlo does the samething and he gets crap for it. It was a good stoppage the ref’s #1 priority is the saftey of the fighters. Sonnen looked like he was in so much pain that he couldn’t tap or submit. Silva and Paulo are in the same camp and very good friends. In interviews they have both said they do not want to fight each other but if it was a fight the fams really wanted and the money was worth it they would do it.

Chael Sonnen i think will eat Paulo Filho up. It would be nice to see Filho win, it was kind of funny seeing Sonnen yell as a verbal tap out…NICE MOVE FILHO! But filho was getting whopped the whole time.
