UFC Quick Quote: Evan Tanner lost the battle at UFC 82 but won the war

"My fight at UFC 82 could arguably be considered the most important of my "fight" career. I was an aging former world champion trying to break into the scene again after a long layoff. I sat out as the sport evolved, and it was said that I was too old, and the sport had passed me by, that my day was done. I could be said that there was so much riding on that fight, that there was so much to prove ... and there was. I sat alone with my coach in the dressing room after the fight. No words, nothing to say, both just sitting there staring at the floor. It was an unbearably heavy sadness. We sat there without words, as the tears came to my eyes. I had to stand up and walk away as they rolled down my face. I didn't want to bother my coach with them. They were mine, mine to deal with. I had just stepped out of the Octagon where I had stood face to face with one of the top fighters in the world, but it was there, in the dressing room behind the scenes after the fight that night, that I waged my greatest battle. It would have been so easy to have picked up the bottle again in that moment, to have made the decision to go back to it. I could have thought "I tried so hard, I did everything right, and this is my reward?" I could have cursed the heavens and gone back to the bottle. My addiction was still fresh with me. It would have been so easy. And the thought was there, tempting me, teasing me. That moment, in the silence of the dressing room, faced with crushing disappointment, numbing embarrassment, and that heavy sadness, I faced the old demons. I felt so low, as if everything had been lost. I wanted to drink. I faced those old demons again, and I beat them down. I won the battle, and I won the war. I didn't drink, and I won't. That was my great test, one I had to face before I could really move on. I passed it. I stand triumphant, solid, UNSHAKEABLE. The loss at UFC 82 was a setback, and I am very disappointed in that, but considering what I just came out of, the fact that I was near collapsing just months ago, that I was almost on the streets, I feel it was huge that I was even able to step into the ring again. I faced my fears, and my greatest weakness, and won. Despite the loss, I'm feeling very good, and highly motivated. There is still a belt out there to win. Now it's time to get to work. I'm not going anywhere. I'm back in training this week."

I’m glad to see Tanner wanting to continue. If he was to start drinking again I’d like to see: Evan Tanner vs Yukon Cornelius in a fight in an ice cave with the Abomidable Snowmonster as the ref.

Im so glad that Evan took things how he did. Definitely hoping to see him with more fire, back in the Octagon.

THAT’s why I’m an Evan Tanner fan. He could loose his next 100 fights and I’ll back him all the way.

It was sad to see him perform like he did at 82. I hope to see better from him in the future.

Maybe he didn’t fight to win but fought not to lose cause he was worried about the effects of the loss on him mentally. Maybe that’s why he was so tentative in that fight. He didn’t look like the old Evan Tanner at all. I hope that experience is a wake up call and we see him go balls to the wall in his next fight and get back on the winning track and see a resurgance of the old Evan Tanner. Kudos to him for staying strong and taking the harder road.

Tanner, you’re the man. I think him against Grove would be a good fight.

Ironic that your link on your name does pretty much the same thing. Don’t be a dickhead when someone pours their heart out and speaks about their inner demons.

I heard worse tragedies… like Luke Cummo pouring coffee up his ass (2300mg of caffine).

Probably my newest favorite fighter of all time now after that. One of the hardest addictions to deal with and like he said he was unshakeable! way to go Evan i’m super excited to watch you fight again and will be on your side till you retire.

He should be a writer after his retirement… just thought i’d throw that in..

IMO Tanner didn’t lose anything. I thinks it’s a little crazy that they put him in against a guy who could now be considered the #1 contender for the MW title. He should have at least had one fight under his belt before stepping in after 2 years off. But you have to hand it too him for being a man and taking the fight.

While I admire anyone who takes a challenge big or small, and tanner is someplace I will never be, I have a very hard time feeling any pride or pity for someone who created their own “demons”. I admire those who thru their trials stood strong on their own with out the excuse or crutch of alcohol, drugs, steroids ect. I give no kudos to those who feel they are entitled to extra praise because they have fought their way out of a hole they created while most have fought and stayed strong never to create that hole to begin with!!!

Tanner had his moments, and maybe a few years ago he would have whupped Okami. That was a terrible fight for a guy who had done nothing but self-destruct for the last two years. I think he’ll be back, get an opponent other than the No. 1 contender for the MW title and look like old Evan again.

All kidding aside, Evan did have guts to take on an opponent who has only lost to Franklin in 7 fights in the UFC, he looked tentative but, I think it was more of ring rust he was getting mad at himself for getting hit with that same right hand you could tell he was frustrated, im sure he will be back strong hell he looked pretty strong in the fight he was hurt and manhandled Okami in the Wrestling he took him down with ease when Okami didnt have the fence to push off of. Tanner should take a week or 2 off and begin training again by the time his next fight come along he will be in better shape and without rust. Im guessing give him some one up and coming rather than a vet for his next fight.

Any good suggestions for his next opponent? I think a good next opponent would be Marvin Eastman. They’re both fairly old but Eastman won his last fight and I think that Tanner could take him but the win would give him some good credibility.

You have a good suggestion there but now that I think about a suitable opponent for Tanner; Leben sounds like a great opponent.

First of all, shut your mouth please. Second of all, your name brings you to a site that seems to constantly talk about yourself nonstop. Thirdly, way to go Tanner, hope we see him back sooner than later.

RESPECT TO TANNER IS WELL DESERVED. I KNW WHT ITS LIKE HAVING DEMONS WITH DRINK. TANNER WILL PROVE ALL HIS DOUBTERS WRONG AND SHAKE UP THE MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION AGAIN.

MAD RESPECT for Evan Tanner.cant wait to see his next fight.
he probably should have fought someone ranked a little lower in the 185 div. Okami just solidified his number 1 ranking with his win.

I couldn’t be prouder of Evan Tanner. It takes real balls first of all to lay your whole life story out there for ppl to judge. The way he has handled himself and overcome his deamons these past 6 months have been amazing. No he didn’t look like the old Evan Tanner, but you got to remember he has only been training since OCT 2007. He’s my hero and win or lose I will always cheer for him.

At least Evan tried to come in and fight REAL competition.
Who is Brock fighting after Coleman? Is Royce available? Tank?

GOOD FOR YOU EVAN TANNER!!!!!!!

I dont think Leben would be a good next opponent for Tanner. Leben is riding high right now (that’s what a 2 fight win streak will do for you in the MW division). I believe that Evan Tanner needs to truely begin at the BOTTOM of the division. Leben is nowhere near the bottom of the division. Speaking of bottoms of the division, how about Tanner vs Sakara? That would make 100 times more sense.
by ViolentMike on Mar 5, 2008 12:36 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
You might be right ViolentMike. Um…Sakara has too many losses in the UFC. How about a Tanner vs. Martin fight?

Addiction is the result of a series of poor personal choices, not a disease. Calling it a disease is merely a way for people to mitigate or nullify their personal responsibility for their situation. To put alcoholics, crackheads and other various junkies on the same level as, say, kids with cancer is demeaning and insulting. I’m glad to see Evan and any other addict kick his problems, but they were all of his own doing. He’s no hero for it.

Tanner needs a win under his belt to get him back on track. I would suggest his next opponent being the old head Ivan Salavary. That is a very winnable fight for Tanner and it would be good for him to get his career back on track.
Feeding him to Okami right off the bat was a terrible idea. Okami was brought into this division to bring a SPARK to the division. What was the point in feeding him to Okami?
Props to Tanner for not giving in to his Deamons after the loss. I watched UFC 82 at home with my brother and the 1st thing that came to mind when he lost was, I hope he doesnt go get wasted tonight. Much Props to Tanner for staying strong, and I will be happy to see him fight again.
I thought it was AWESOME when Tanner came out to Jimi Hendrix!
It suited him perfectly!

I for one picked Okami to win in my pool, but I definately wouldn’t have been upset if I was wrong on that fight. I was glad to see Evan back and I hope that he continues to focus his efforts on fighting. He can be good again.

This is a sport you cannot take some time off you have to be on the ball each and every day. Tanner did not think about it when he took that long layoff. While you are taking a break there are other fighters who are training and getting better. As a fan of the sports and a big fan of Evan I was not happy to see him lose the way he did. I know he is going to take it seriously now and is going to come back better than ever before. When you are an athlete at this level you should know that you have fans that follow your carreer and you dont wanna lose them by doing things that make no sense.I saw Evan in Vegas and I was really proud to take a picture with him.I was really looking forward to seeing this fight, but I did not like the way it ended.

-LOL, I also dont see the point in him coming out to say all of this. Sure, hes been a dedicated fighter all these years, but what is his point in coming out to say this?? not like he was getting harrased by people for losing or anything…

If you people don’t like what Evan had to say, move on and don’t read. Don’t feel the need to shit on someone who is trying to get their life straight, cause Karma’s a bitch and very real. Good for you Evan…I can’t wait to see you in the octagon again soon.

All I’m saying is the guy has his own web site about every little thing he does…… that’s soneone who needs attention in a bad way and feeds off it………….that’s all I’m saying…..he will be back and I hope he wins! Just don’t make a journal everytime you go to the bathroom!!!!

Those who dare, win, that’s you Evan on two fronts! You are a champion and always will be… I’m a huge fan of yours from many moons ago. Recently moved to Amarillo, where I have spoken with many folks that know you. Tried to get a hold of you via email- Would love to see ya back in Amarillo for the Armed Forces Day banquet, 17 May 08, 6:30 pm at the Civic center. We will recognize service men and women and past veterans. This event is sponsored by America Supports You Texas (nonprofit org). We will also recognize many Gold Star families. A celebrity like you could make a big difference to young folks that have lost a loved one in the War on Terrorism.
Can’t wait to see ya fight again-
