Kimbo gets his bread: EliteXC fighter payouts and salaries for 'Street Certified' (Update)

Update: Moyses Gabin got paid just $1 ... not $1,000. Thanks to James for the clarification. No reason is available right now for the nominal purse.
There were a few readers asking about the fighter payouts for EliteXC: "Street Certified," which took place on February 16 from the BankUnited Center in Miami, Fla.
MMAmania.com just received those figures from the Florida State Boxing Commission.
There's some interesting paydays for some of the combatants to say the least. Main eventer Kimbo Slice received $175,000 for 43 seconds of work. I guess putting butts in the seats puts dollars in your pocket.
Keep in mind that's not counting his sponsorships, either. It's safe to say that he's no longer saying, "Give me my bread," but rather, "I've got my bread, now I want my cheese."
His opponent, Tank Abbott, took home $126,000, which is not bad for a fighter who has won once in the last decade.
James Thompson earned $25,000 in a first round knockout loss to Brett Rogers, while Rogers only pocketed $4,000. That was one of four fights on the card where the loser made more than the winner.
Here's all the payouts for EliteXC: "Street Certified:"
Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson - $175,000 ($125,000 to show, $50,000 to win)
David "Tank" Abbott - $126,000
Kimbo defeated Tank by KO (punch) 43 seconds into the first round
Antonio Silva - $80,000
Ricco Rodriguez - $20,000
Silva defeated Ricco by split decision
Scott Smith - $12,000
Kyle Noke - $3,000
Smith defeated Noke by KO (punch) 7 seconds into round 2
Yves Edwards - $6,000
Edson Berto - $6,000
Yves defeated Berto by KO (knee) with 4 seconds left in round 1
Brett Rogers - $4,000
James Thompson - $25,000
Brett Rogers defeated Thompson by KO (punch) at 2:24 of round 1
Rafael Fiejao - $6,000
John Doyle - $2,500
Fiejao defeated Doyle by TKO at 2:17 of round 1
Yosmany Cabazes - $2,000
Jon Kirk - $2,500
Cabazes defeated Kirk by submission (rear naked choke) at :52 of round 2
Dave Herman - $1,500
Mario Rinaldi - $2,000
Herman defeated Rinaldi by TKO 33 seconds into round 3
Eric Bradley - $1,000
Mikey Gomez - $1,500
Bradley defeated Gomez by unanimous decision
Mike Bernhard - $1,500
Lorenzo Borgameo - $1,000
Bernhard defeated Borgameo by submission (triangle) at 4:11 of round 2
Moyses Gabin -- $1
Jirka Hlavaty -- $500
Gabin defeated Hlavaty via technical knockout (cut) in round one
It looks like Gary Shaw gets his main event and co main event fighters paid very well. We could see more guys moving over to fight for EliteXC if they can earn paychecks like that.
Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

I feel bad for those lower card guys. Less than 2 grand for a fight? I mean, you rarely see UFC go under 8 grand per fighter. Maybe Tito can come back to Earth when he sees this.

Tank gets 126k to show, Kimbo gets 125k to show.
Whats that about?

Note: Ricco had a $40K win bonus and Tank had a $50k win bonus that they missed out on.

BJ Penn on Takanori Gomi:
“With me and Takanori Gomi, the question is where do you sell the fight? He’s a huge name in Japan, I’m a big name in the U.S,” he stated. “It’s all about making big fights. I’m sure me and Gomi are going to fight again, some way, somehow. I’m sure it’s going to happen.”
Dana u Prick, u better find away to make it happen!

Yves Edwards – $6,000? How does this happen? I love to watch Yves fight. Hes gotta get out of this crap organization and back to the UFC. He might not be the best there but he sure would be fun to watch.
Some poor guy made $500 for getting KOed in the first round. Now that really sucks. This is why people dont complain much about what the UFC pays them.

Tank got PAID. But I am totally flabbergasted at the fact that Tank’s show salary was higher than Kimbo’s. That fight could have featured Kimbo vs ANYBODY and those same fans still would have sold out that arena. Miami is Kimbo’s adopted hometown.

Dana wouldn’t give that guy 2 nickels to get KOed.

Who, after Tito, will be the next UFC fighter to leave the company?
Tim Sylvia? I think not. Unless he loses again.
Brock Lesnar? If he doesn’t ever win, which won’t happen.
BJ Penn? I think if he beats Sherk and Dana doesn’t let him move back up to WW, he could be the next to go. Which to me is fine, I already know he’s the best LW in the world!

Damn….looks like EliteXC pays some of their guys way more then UFC does.
Tank Abbott, $126K and Antonio Silva 80K…that is higher then a lot of UFC vets base pay
This might be bad news for the UFC….over time, more and more guys will jump ship for the bigger pay days, even if it means beating up on cans like Tank Abbott or Rico Rodriguez
by UFCPreview.com on Feb 20, 2008 12:24 PM EST reply actions
I guess that paying Tank that much would guarantee that he could not win right? I’ve seen more fight out of tank in his past losses that in this fight. This is what you get from an old school boxing promoter; overpaid fighters and questionable results. I still can’t believe that some posters on other forums gave Tank a chance against this guy, I mean is tank still training full time, other that beer mug flexes.
by Diablo on Feb 20, 2008 12:30 PM EST reply actions
How can people like Rinaldi who made what $2000 survive?? How can you survive on that? Hospital bills had to of been more than that. And not including the time it took to train. Some of these guys must just have money. $2000 is no where near enough to cover a couple months of training and all the medical treatment
by fightfan on Feb 20, 2008 12:30 PM EST reply actions
No wonder Tank looked like shit. He took a couple hits and fell. Hell, for $126,000 plus sponsors, I would of sat on a barstool 7 nights a weeks and trained about 2 hours a week for that kind of money. Put m ein there, I would last more than 43 seconds. That is a shame…..just for the mere fact that Tank most likely used this just for a payday amnd a PAYDAY ONLY. He probably had no intention of training for a fight or think he had a chance in hell to win. When he signed for the $126K, he already knew what would happen…. A couple hits, then off to cash my check and drink some more

if they are willing to pay guys like Kimbo and Tank that kind of money, imagine what some top tier fighters from the UFC would make. Tito would definitely get paid crazy amounts of money there. with his name on their card they could make a killing.

Thats a damn shame. For the 1st time in years Tim actually fought a good fight, and Tank who didnt train at all just strolled into the cage, got kO and walked away with a hell of a pay day.
If I was Sylvia, I would be really pissed. 1st he watched Brock make double what Sylvia made, then he watches a freakshow in another organization and both Tank and Kimbo get paid more then him.

If EliteXC keeps on paying guys like that they will go under within 2 years. How much $ was generated from that show? WFA, Bodog and IFL used to get accolades for “taking care of their fighters” also.

On one end, I would love for this to happen, but he has already beat Gomi, and to be honest, I believe it would go very similar to fight 1.
I don’t believe Gomi could put him on his back, but if he did he’d get ulma-plata’d in two seconds. If Diaz and Serra(grappling tourny) can do it, Penn and his crazy dextarity can do it. And if Penn got on top, it would be a disaster for Gomi.
The standup is the only reasonable arguement for Gomi, but Penn is improving that everyday, and his rock for a head is like having cheat codes in a video game, just ain’t fair.

Mania, I thought that u were joking. This makes Dana White look like Santa clause…..At some point, I think that a fighter’s union has to become neccessary, not as much for the stars but more important for the undercard fighters who can barely cover their medical expenses.
Thats y I respect Nick Diaz a lot. As soon as he made some good money, He started paying for his training partners health insurance and stuff like that because they weren’t making anything as fighters on undercards. I think that fighters medical expenses of injuries that occur during UFC events should all be paid for by the UFC. Dana wants to go mainstream and really make this a sport…..Well to my knowledge the majority of contact sports dont make you pay for injuries that take place during work

Anomaly: Everyone who is familiar with me knows Gomi is one of my favorite fighters, but I cant disagree with anything you wrote. He may be one of my favorite, but I try to be unbiased so I agree with your whole analysis of how a rematch would go.
I still would love to see it! Also if this fight does happen it would mean that Gomi is in the UFC, or that the UFC finally did some cross promotional events to get the fight done, both great scenario’s. So having this fight take place is a win-win situation for us.
I hope this fight happens eventually, but in reality I feel there is a better chance of us seeing a rematch between Diaz vs. Gomi, than BJ vs. Gomi, just because EliteXC is much more open to cross promoting events with other organizations.

Dana white and the UFC cannot be the only one to blame for not providing insurance for injuries. Most fighters have to also give a percentage of the purse to their teams, and sometimes they are also very shady on how they treat their members should teams provide insurance to their members as well for charging them money. Remember Nate Quarry, he left Team Quest because they requested a percentage of his purse even if he trained somewhere else. At the end Lindland discredited him for leaving when all he wanted to do was train with other experts and keep his money. I wonder how many teams do this too, and if the guy that earned a dollar has to give a percentage back to his team, he wouldn’t even be able to get water at McDonalds.

Not quite. It is a shame, yes, that Tank made more than Tim salary wise however, what Tim and Tank walk away with (sponsorships, ppv cuts etc) is a different story. I have heard that generally, UFC ppv cuts for fighters can be double their salary. I doubt EliteXC sold anywhere close to half of what the UFC sells for a typical fight.

Yeah I think Gomi would take it if he fought Diaz again, he gassed or something in that fight, it was really weird, but his hands are so unbelieveably fast AND strong, ya gotta credit Diaz in that fight for stickin in there with those bombs Gomi hit him with.
Also those two scenarios are both bomb, it’s a shame Gomi will most likely never be in the UFC, there are so many match ups in there I wanna see him with. It is also a shame Dana is so agaisnt involving anybody outside the UFC that is not signed for life.
But yeah besides Penn, there is not another LW out there that I would not most likely bet on Gomi in a match.

uhh they do have insurance. various promoters have said so. as part of putting on a fight card, they have to provide insurance to the fighters. So if they get injured, the insurance covers teh injury and the necessary rehab from said injury. BUT, this is only good on the day of the fight, it doesn’t cover injuries during training, which is why it is recomended that fighters have their own personal insurance to cover when they are training.
