Dana White: Tank Abbott UFC Hall of Fame future inductee

tank abbott

Props: ESPN.com

Quoteworthy:

"I think the whole thing was a farce [the EliteXC promotion]. I love Tank. I have nothing but respect for him; he's always been good to me. But I don't want to see that again.... Tank Abbott absolutely will be in our Hall of Fame."

UFC President Dana White comments on the recent spectacle that was Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott at the EliteXC: "Street Certified" show on February 16 from the BankUnited Center in Miami, Fla. He also reveals that he has a seat waiting for Abbott once he decides to hang up the gloves. That would mean Abbott would be enshrined alongside Octagon pioneers such as Royce Gracie, Randy Couture, Dan Severn, Ken Shamrock and soon-to-be inductee, Mark Coleman.

(Thanks to CombatLifestyle.com for the post-fight Abbott pic with his yellow short bus and lady friend.)

Tank Abbott UFC Hall of Famer?

WHAT A JOKE

Why is this a joke? I think Tank WAS a pioneer, as was Shamrock, Coleman, and Royce. They each brought their game to the forefront. It’s too easy to try to discredit this guy than it is to take up for him. Yes, his time is over, but you can never take away the great moments and success he has had in the UFC. Good for you Tank, and thank you.

The UFC hall of fame is little more than a sales tool for the marketing behemoth that is the UFC. it’s a shame so many fans fall into the trap. This case is hardly better. Dana seems to be applying the bloated weight of the UFC hall of fame to leverage draw from another promotion.

tank is has 9 wins and 14 losses. In 23 fights he has only knocked out his oppentents 5 times. Most of those coming back in the days when the person didn’t know anything. This makes no sense. But then again neither does Dana White.

Tito Ortiz should be inducted as soon as his contract is up, if he is to never fight for the UFC again thats only fair. hopefully Tito can whoop Machidas ass in ugly old school Tito fashion and ppl will ask for more I bet you he will get a crazy standing obation win or loose, hopefully win and please work shit out with Dana so I can keep being entertained by Tito’s crazy charisma

Surely to be in the hall of fame you have to have octagon success…i mean all of the current HOFer’s were champions within the ufc, apart from Severn, who still won UFC 5 Tournament tho’ …..so why should Tank, a self confessed one dimensional fighter be in the ufc (mixed martial arts) hall of fame?!
…its funny how dana says “he’s always been good to me.” … does that mean Tito wont get in?…i agree with hector, he should be in already, especially by the end of 09.

I would love to get drunk with Tank and have a night out on the town with him. The dude is out of his mind!

I wonder if he has ever even stepped on a tread mill? The only man to have fought a bunch of times in the UFC but never trained for any of the fights…what a lunatic!

by john on Feb 20, 2008 1:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Tank used to train after he had some success…He’s actually quite fast…look at his website for more info…

i don’t know about tank as a future hall of famer. can you even call him a true mixed martial artist? He couldn’t do anything worth a damn on the ground…

“Once Tank decides to hang up the gloves”

WHERE or WHEN will Tank ever have a chance at making $125,000 for a night(well a few seconds) of his time and a few punches. If Tank were 50 and 400 lbs the fight would of happened.

as long as more and more freak shows are promoted…..You never know we might see tank get KO again in a few seconds….and for 100K plus

Just goes to show that UFC Hall of Famers only go in due to their friendship with Dana and not on merit nowadays. If it was on merit we would be looking at more deserving fighters who actually won something in the Octagon like Tito or Rizzo.
All the ones currently on it are deserving of their places but Tank? Might aswell put Sean Gannon in there.

Seems pretty cynical. People just like it when good fighters and pioneers of the sport are recognized for their accomplishment. That’s all.

I think i’m being realistic, not cynical.

I’m not by any means undermining the impact on the sport provided by the great fighters already in the UFC hall of fame, but the UFC’s hall of fame seems, to me at least, a cheap and abused medium of commendation and acknowledgment. This latest quote of dana’s regarding Tank’s spot in the hall of fame simply udnerscores my argument.

I don’t like Tito at all, but I do feel he deserves to be in the UFC hall of fame. What are his chances with the current managment? ZERO.

In the end, what value does the hall of fame posess? We know these fighters (Tank excluded) have had tremendous impact on the sport and/or successful fighting careers. I certainly don’t need a tarnished UFC hall of fame to affirm the obvious.

by Clayton on Feb 20, 2008 2:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

THIS IS THE BIGGEST BS statement I HAVE ever HEARD FROM DANA AND THATS SAYING ALOT

there is no way in hell Tank should be in the hall of fame this is a joke and so is dana

But the key part of danas comments which is what it comes down to is when he says
“I have nothing but respect for him; he’s always been good to me.”
So I guess all you have to to is be good to dana and you could possibly have a chance to be a hall of famer even though you were a medeoker fighter at best.

Its all politics this guy is ruining the UFC yes he helped build it but this is the cherry on the cake what bull shit

by dia mette on Feb 20, 2008 2:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

they need to start induct alot more fighters before they induct Tank. Frye,Tito,Hughes,Coleman,F.Shamrock and many others that had lest won a belt!

What is he going to be in there for the 1st fighter that isnt a Martial Artist with no training and half the time had a “cocktail” before steping in the cage?

by Da Twin on Feb 20, 2008 2:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m cool with it. When you look back to the early UFC’s biggest stars and PPV draws, one of the guys you think of is Tank. Allow him to be recognized. Sure, he was never a top opponant, but you can’t take away what he meant to the UFC.

Damn it isn’t April fool’s day yet. wtf. Shouldn’t all the hall of famers be prior champions? Dana you are not doing the prior hall of famers justice if you do this.

I don’t mind Tank getting into the HOF. But I think the HOF is more about Dana. i.e. you need to be on good terms with Dana to be inducted. Fighters who I would put in the UFC HOF:

Bas Rutten
Frank Shamrock
Tito Ortiz
Matt Hughes
Chuck Liddell

Potential HOFers depending on the near future:

BJ Penn
GSP
Anderson Silva
Rampage
Tim Sylvia (I know, I know, but a 2-time champ is a 2-time champ)

I agree………..there r players in the NHL hall of fame just for having sooo many penalty minutes(Bob Probert, Rob Ray, Craige Berube, Chris Nilan)…does that make the NHL hall of fame look bad…….NO, it doesnt!!

I agree Mike, I think in order to be a legend or in the hall of fame, you have to be one of the all time greats. Other than Tank’s punching, he can’t even be considered an MMA fighter. HE has no ground or cardio. Plus he has pissed on his legacy over the past 10 years. I think it is great that he cashed in and got paid for his name, but he tarnished it and it shouldn’t be in the same breath as Randy, Ken, Chuck and Royce.

BTW, it is great to be back in the forum. I missed you guys

great moments and success?? WTF!! he does not have one significant win in his entire career. tank is a tough guy and always comes to fight, you gotta respect that. but he does not deserve to be in the hall of fame.

Someone help me out here: I didnt watch the Tank vs. Kimbo fight on TV. I caught the video of it on the computer, but it wasn’t clear enough for me to see weather tank landed the few punches he attempted with power behind them. I am just asking to know what kind of chin Kimbo has….Did Tank test it at all?

Tank a ufc hall of fame? this goes to show that dana has lost his mind. He will let cro cop, tito, and most important fighter randy walk away from the ufc and they are the ones that make the ppv worth buying!ufc and dana is in a downhill spiral the rise of ppv cost and great fighters leaving are a bad sign, dana i guess we will see you in the funny pages when the ‘f’ brothers can your a$$ and you return to be an aerobics instructer.

Kimbo has a rock solid chin. Tank didn’t realy test it, but in some of kimbo’s underground fights you can see him really take a shot. It is inhuman. He is one guy who I would be deathly afraid of being caught in a ring, or alley with

why is he a joke, because he has a losing record? i bet no one thought that in the mid 90’s. and were prolly cheering him on. would you say he was a joke to his face or just it home safe behind your keyboard?

That’s exactly why he’s a joke. Putting him and his 9-14 record into the Hall of Fame is like putting up a monument to the 2003 Detroit Tigers for nearly setting a record for most losses in a season. Everybody who fought in the early no holds barred days of the UFC is not an automatic HOF entry just because they were a “trailblazer.” Maybe we should put the immortal Art Jimmerson (0-1), Teila Tuli (0-1) and Trent Jenkins (0-2) into the Hall of Fame. They all fought on the UFC 1 card, and that seems to be your only entry requirement.

regardless of the recent losses, but lets admit he’s a big part of this sports when the modern MMA is just in the beggining, so let him have it

he may have a losing record but he also was at one time a heavy reason alot of people started watching mma. He had the attitude that was different from everyone elses.I think he was todays kimbo of yesterday.

It will be awful if Tank gets into the Hall of Fame but Pat Militech remains snubbed. The guy was a dominant 170 pound who has trained countless other champs, but oh yeah, him and Dana don’t get along. I agree Frank Shamrock should be there too.

Look at Tank’s early record. He had good KOs of bums, but not one of his wins was against a decent fighter. Taktorov, Severn, Frye, Vitor, Maurice Smith, Rizzo = all losses. He even lost to that bum Scott Ferrozzo. And don’t tell me Steve Jennum was a big win. His UFC3 Tournement win was the biggest joke and fluke in MMA History. He just took advantage of everyone getting hurt and tired

I have read through all the comments and I guess everybody hates Tank Abbott. Well let me ask you all a question? How many of you have ever have even attempted to train in MMA. That is what i thought. Tank Abbott has only turned down one fight in his whole career and that was because he was sick.Tank will gight anybody at any time. Also reading these comments makes me realizes how stuipd you are to MMA. Win or lose, respect the man for getting in there with the best int the world. If not well then you are truly retarded.

by marty doll on Nov 23, 2008 12:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Tank was awesome in the day, why all the hate?

Though tbh only two more ppl from old-school need inducting – frye and frank shamrock

Then close the hall up until people like Anderson and others retire

Bottom line – the hall is special, by 2020 there should only be 10 in it, for being good AND influential (Ken, Royce, Mark) even though Tank was class it would lead to every former champion claiming they warrant a place, and on achievement he doesnt really deserve it, even though he was brilliant haha
