EliteXC: Muhsin Corbbrey signs to fight Nick Diaz in April

Nick Diaz

The mixed martial arts (MMA) lightweight division is arguably the sport's deepest. And it's no different in EliteXC with a mix of up-and-comers like Eddie Alvarez, veterans such as Yves Edwards and an improving division champion known as KJ Noons.

Noons, in fact, recently knocked off the man who was pegged to be the star of the weight class, Nick Diaz.

The Stockton, Calif., native and Caesar Gracie-trained fighter can begin his journey back to the front of the crowded lightweight pack if he signs on to fight on ShoXC veteran, Muhsin Corbbrey (6-2), on April 26 in Honolulu, Hawaii, according to SamCaplan.ProElite.com.

Diaz recently saw his five-fight win streak come to an end with the loss to Noons in EliteXC's first-ever lightweight championship fight. The fight was stopped after Diaz suffered two brutal cuts around both eyes that were seriously affecting his vision.

Of course, the ever colorful Diaz wasn't happy with the doctor's decision to halt the bout and stormed out of the arena, flipping both middle fingers toward the direction of anyone near the cage.

EliteXC Live Events President, Gary Shaw, announced in a January press conference that Diaz had surgery on his eyes following the fight with Noons to reduce the risk of future cuts. It appears now Diaz has recovered from that surgery and his return to the cage is in the works as we speak.

Corbbrey has won both his fights with the orginization, most recently in comeback fashion against Bobby Mcmaster in October with a guillotine choke.

Corbbrey has experience as a professional Muay Thai fighter and boxer, which means that he has a solid stand up game. He also trains jiu-jitsu with UFC veteren Din Thomas and as developed a very nice all around game -- a game that will surely be tested against the jiu-jitsu black belt, Diaz.

This fight would certainly be a big step up for and a huge opportunity to prove himself in the MMA world if Diaz does indeed sign the bout agreement.

It's not a huge named opponent for Nick Diaz, but a Nick Diaz fight is a Nick Diaz fight ... and those are always fun to watch.

Few things are more reliable than Nick Diaz being in the hospital after a fight

BNF,

Nick was out of the UFC after losing 3 consecutive fights, but was brought back to fight Gleason Tibau as a last minute replacement. Since he won the Tibau fight, he was getting an offer to continue fighting in the UFC, but he left for a bigger payday in Pride.

I like watching him fight, because he “brings it” every time and never gasses or wimps out. I usually don’t like taunting, but when Nick does it, it seems cool.

Who the hell do u think u r talking to? I am one of the biggest advocators on this site for other organizations besides the UFC.
So I dont know why you would make that statement to me, Bud! I am fully aware of who Muhsin Corbbrey is. My point was Nick Diaz beat Gomi whom most consider the best lightweight in the world just a year ago… There are much bigger match ups out there for Diablo then Muhsin Corbbrey!

haha you don’t gotta try to prove you’rself John. I think most everybody got what you were sayin, adn I agree. Nick Diaz deserves a name, in everyfight, but then again, so does Fitch? Never know, this could be a Fitch/Wilson kinda scenario.

Did you watch that fight or just hear the results? Doctor stoppage due to a cut is not gettign thrashed, as we have seen many times, cuts often stop fights very prematuraly, KJ could very well have out boxed Diaz, but had it gone on long enough for the fight to hit the ground, might have been a different champion.

I watched it and KJ was handing it to him pretty good. We all know Diaz is a tough SOB though, so he definitely could have still won the fight. That said, he was absolutely losing up to the point when they stopped it.

Well it’s hard to argue that, im just sayin I agree’d with John that, this loss wasnt a devastating one, and by no means reason to not put Diaz up agasint somebody at least better than this Mushin dude.

Thanks for the clarification. I can’t remember all of his opponets in the UFC, but I know he was always exciting. I also remember him as a welterweight in the UFC, but the story above says lightweight. Sometimes it can all get a little confusing.

Diaz was losing to Noons, and his decision over Mike Aina was totally bogus. Still haven’t seen the Gomi fight.

Nick is a beast when he is fighting big names but the two lesser named opponents he has fought recently have given him trouble. Do you think it could have been a case of underestimating his opponents??

I think it’s more of the case that big names don’t give him respect. I think Nick is an exciting fighter, but is not among the elite.

You could be right but i don’t think you have that many good fights if your not an elite fighter but that just my opinion.

Nick would be a gatekeeper in the UFC welterweight division. But anywhere else he could be champ.

I agree. That fight was one of the best mma fights I’ve ever seen. And Diaz was all cut to shit…..before pulling out a sweetass submission from his back. And Gomi is top notch competition.

Forgive my ignorance, but what was that submission called?

Muhsin is a excellent fighter who will win this fight he has worked his ass off to prove himself.

by Wallop Fight Gear on Feb 27, 2008 12:35 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

John isn’t making much sense. First he says he’s never heard of Muhsin (Nick Diaz shouldn’t be fighting anyone I’ve never heard of…), then contradicts himself when keystone calls him out on his ignorance saying “I’m fully aware of who Mushin is.” Every great fighter has a starting point where the world doesn’t yet know who they are…that’s plain sense. Muhsin is an excellent fighter, and if KJ wooped that diaz ass, I’m sure Muhsin will too.
