UFC 83: Matt Serra on the mental state of 'Captain Canada' Georges St. Pierre heading into rematch

Props: MMANews.com
Quoteworthy:
"Well after what happen the first time with him tapping out, I mean they called it a TKO, but he taped. I think now a lot of his attitude towards me has to do with his mental state. I think he needs me to be the bad guy. I mean whatever he's got to do to get himself there is fine with me. I mean if he has to lie on the couch, and listen to his shrink to tell him to put Matt Hughes head on my body that's cool. I definitely don't hold him in the same light as Matt Hughes, but I think he's got to put himself in the mindset that he doesn't like me, and that's cool. I got a lot of friends and family, so if he wants to be enemies it's not the end of the world."
UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra talks about his upcoming fight with Georges St. Pierre at UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre II" on April 19 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. "The Terror" talks a lot about what goes into his fight preparation, as well as reaffirms that he is 100 percent healthy.

Just playin the devils advocate here. But everyone said that GSP was gonna dominate in the first match, as did I. Now, I’m not sayin Serra’s gonna win, but he doesn’t exactly have fist of feathers and anyone in this sport has a punchers chance. And I wouldn’t say that Serra’s weak and his BJJ ain’t that half bad either, so it might be interesting if this thing goes to the ground.

Agree, Lycan. After watcing his tko, jiu-jitsu videos, and TUF appearances, I have grown to respect Matt Serra, as a fighter. I can’t say the same for his personality, though, but that isn’t the point. Mma is a competition for respect, and I think he earned it………..
Having said that, GSP by ko or submission (can’t decide, he’s GSP is too well rounded!), round 2. LOL

It was Serra that called GSP “Captain Canada” and I am sure there are almost as many fans of GSP that are “American” as there are “Canadians”. If there is anyone that is making this to be another Canada vs USA it would be the guys down south.
by Jo on Feb 14, 2008 3:25 PM EST reply actions
This is going to be a good fight. I got GSP winning it but it will be more competitive then GSP vs. HughesIII thats for sure. I think Serra will show that his striking is much improved and that his KO over GSP was no fluke. I dont expect him to KO GSP again, but I do think his striking is much better that what people give him credit for.

I don’t remember GSP saying anything that was that’’’ disrespectful to MATT SERRA. I watched the last interview with them together, I guess GSP said something about himself not being prepared for the last fight and SERRA took it as GSP not giving him credit.
BIG DEAL’… I actually think SERRA is more likely the one that needs to not like his opponent. GSP is normally not like that.

just think of it this way. obviously a lot of haters for the long island boy , but if u look at it from just a fighters stand point.. there not that far off..
Gsp’s stand up is better but serra did khtfo. so u think it would 60% to 40% serra.. and
gsps ground game is better, but dont tell me matt cant submit him at all. we all kno serras nasty on the ground too. so i would go same percentage as the stand up.
so out of 200% serra has and 80% chance to win in my eyes.. so its not a def hes gunna lose, theres always a chance. i think serras wins in the 3rd round wit an omaplata.
holla.

That is seriously one of the oddest things Serra could have said. I think he knows well how much respect GSP and Matt Hughes have for each other. I dont think GSP has to hate anyone… But if GSP does hate Serra, things are gonna go dark even quicker.

Well I’m not Canadian, I’m from Scotland… And GSP is gonna get his revenge on Serra…
GSP came into that first fight thinking believing he was going to destroy Serra with no effort and that he had nothing to prove… Now he’s coming into this fight with EVERYTHING to prove… On any given night Kos and Hughes would dominate Matt Serra, and we all saw what happened to them against the NEW and IMPROVED GSP that doesn’t take opponents lightly and trains with top MMA guys.

Earlier, I read that m-1 has reached a deal with the new mma company “DREAM”. They will cross promote events together. So far they got cro cop, Fedor, Aleksander, Royce Gracie even said he plans on competing in Dreams. Could anyone tell me if Mark Hunt re-signed with K-1? If anyone has anymore news about the deal with M-1 and Dreams please let me know. Already there have been some rumblings of Fedor vs. Cro Cop part 2. Those 2 company’s working together will produce some pretty solid shows. Its a shame that world voictory road has signed a couple top fighters because if not, they would have signed with Dreams and we might have seen the closest thing to a PRIDE show as possible.
I need answers to the following questions:
Anyone know what rules Dream will fight under? Hopefully its the same exact rules as PRIDE.
Can anyone provide any more news on the deal between M-1 and Dream?
What company did Mark Hunt recently sign with?
Please help!

I was looking through different mma sites today trying to see if there were rumors of any interesting fights have been added to UFC 84 and UFC 85. What I found interesting was:
Internet speculation has pointed to Jardine vs. Wanderlei for weeks now. Today, I saw that this fight was taken off the UFC 84 fight card and now the fight card reads:
Wanderlei Silva vs. TBA
Keith Jardine vs. TBA
Can these 2 top fighters, who we all want to see face each other ,appear on the same card and not fight each other? Could Dana White really do this to us? All the top dogs at 205 are Booked. the only logical fight is wanderlei vs. Jardine. I hope this is just a viscious rumor because I dont want Jardine or wanderlei fighting anyone besides each other at UFC 84! If anyone has any knowledge to add on this subject please do so.

I feel that GSP will KO Serra. GSP is so good at all aspects of mma that he can pick and choose where the fight takes place and how he wants to finish it. Since Serra KO him badly last time, I have a feeling there will be no submissions or G n’ P out of GSP this time around. I have a feeling that GSP wants to pay Serra back with a standing highlight KO.
I think this fight will be much more competitive then GSP vs. Hughes 3 was….agreed?

If you look at this fight with an open mind you have to think GSP will win. Hes got better stand up. Hes got better wrestling. Hes stronger. Matt Serra may have better BJJ but the only way this fight goes to the ground is because GSP takes it their. On their feet Serra has a chance as he proved last fight. Maybe GSP has a suspect chin(even though he did get hit behind the head first). If you look at all of this there is a small chance Serra will win but he can. Dont hate on the GSP fans because they think he will win. Most people do. Doesnt mean he will but he should.

i agree. i think gsp will be a little more defensive minded and tentative against serra than hughes. hughes has no power and serra has alot. i think this fight will go alot lot gsp/koscheck. gsp will put serra on his back and gnp his way to victory. i dont think serra will submit him, and since this is a 5 rnder ican see it going 4 rnds before gsp stops him. then i see serra beating hughes and hughes retiring. serra will probably drop down to 155 where he is most suited at his size and being one of the top guys to beat. i can see serra as the lw champ once b.j. moves up. i know this is alot of ifs but i can really seeing it happen this way.

Turning this into a USA vs. Canada thing is really stupid. I’m from America (along with probably a large majority of the people commenting here), and that doesn’t change the fact that Serra’s got a very, very slim chance of seeing lightning strike twice by beating GSP again.
Actually, it sorta reminds me — the last time I watched a UFC PPV with friends was UFC 79 (featuring Hughes/GSP 3). My friend had a bunch of his co-workers over, and some of them were just embarrassingly stupid. When Hughes came out to his stupid, redneck theme music, I started making fun of him. Some stupid guy said “Well, at least it’s an American song!” When GSP came out and I clapped, he asked how I could support a Canadian. When GSP made Hughes into his own personal pile of pubes, he shut up.
by Ben! on Feb 14, 2008 6:01 PM EST reply actions
The fight can go either way. Is it really possible for lightning to strike twice? Yes.
Serra already beat GSP. I really wonder what GSP’s approach to this fight will be? Will he attempt to stand? Kick box? Engage Serra in a clinch? Or take the fight to the floor where Serra is at his strongest, but GSP recently proved he is more than formidable. understandably Serra will attempt to close the distance with his striking as he did in the 1st fight.
Will it be another upset if Serra wins again? I don’t think so. Just respect Serra, the styles is definitely going to make this fight.

I think the reach advantage will play a huge part in this fight, from a objective perspective, GSP has a size and reach advantage over Serra. Also, GSP has been healthy, training and has fought twice since last April, Serra may have been in shape during TUF, and reports came in that he was 200 lbs while injured and has finally resumed training within the last few weeks. St.Pierre seems focused where Matt seems to be airing his grievances since the UFC decided to create an interim title for 79.
It’s seems lately that GSP has taken and won both of his last fights to the ground. It would almost telegraph that he would plan on fighting from top position, but i wouldn’t be surprised if the fight stays standing.

For me it’s not about the US or Canada. For me it’s about class. Matt Sera lacks it in ALL respects. Just like Phil Baroni, Tito Ortiz, Melvin Guillard, etc. What will they all have in common come UFC 83? Has been or never was. We all need someone to hate but Serra IS the typical NY prick. well it’s not like theres anything wrong with doing it anyway, he was punched in the head like 10 times leading up to it, starting with a punch to the back of the head. if he was out of it and couldn’t get up it’s the same as tapping for a submission

just think of it this way. obviously a lot of haters for the long island boy , but if u look at it from just a fighters stand point.. there not that far off..
Gsp’s stand up is better but serra did khtfo. so u think it would 60% to 40% serra.. and
gsps ground game is better, but dont tell me matt cant submit him at all. we all kno serras nasty on the ground too. so i would go same percentage as the stand up.
so out of 200% serra has and 80% chance to win in my eyes.. so its not a def hes gunna lose, theres always a chance. i think serras wins in the 3rd round wit an omaplata.
holla.
Matt can’t subbmitt GSP. How do I know this? Matt doesn’t submit ANYONE, check his UFC record if you don’t believe me. On the other hand GSP subs 1/3 of his opponents. Serra beat the WORST GSP EVER. The odds of that SAME GSP showing up are SLIM and NONE and SLIM just left. GSP has been training STEADY (-2 weeks off after KOS fight)since he fought Serra and he is on the top of his game. This time I don’t think Serra will get his punchers chance. I doubt GSP will come out and dance around for 3 minutes and let Serra do what he wants. He’ll come out and CONTROLL the fight in the first few seconds like he did against Kos and Hughes. After the first 30 seconds you’ll realise that the first fight , gsp just wasn’t, GSP.

Very much way in hell. Happened once. Score is one nothing serra. How could you be that confident in Pierre? Pierre fans better be at least a little nervous if they are realistic. I know I am.
If GSP was going through the same things he was going through last time, than yes,I would be a nervous wreck. He said he wouldn’t take a fight again if he was messed up. I believe he is the type of guy that learns from his mistakes and never makes the same mistake twice. He says he is better than ever and his last two fights seem to back this up. GSP has always got better every fight, except against Serra he looked like shit. Doesn’t this hint that he had a bad night and maybe next time it might be a different story? I’ll go with the odds that GSP will be as confident as he has been in over 90% of his fights and consider that nevous mess that walked in to the octagon last april was an anomaly due to personal life problems. GSP is at his most dangerous when he has something to prove and he has more to prove than ever, after the way Serra beat him. Sure Serra beat him once and could do it again, however if you take these things into consideration, it would still be a wise bet to put your money on GSP. Ok ,I admit it, I’ll be a little nervous when the fight starts.

I think GSP has a pretty solid chin, considering he took at least 10 hard shots from Serra and didn’t go out. Even the best chin in the business (NOG) gets rocked. A suspect chin is when you get hit once and have a nap. He never had a chance to recover, because Serra was on him like white on rice.

Agreed 0.He did it once and can always do it again. sick and tired of that stupid guy talk about being in the best shape of his life in every interview he has ever done. next thing you know he gets submittedor or KTFO.then stupid mma fans talk about gsp being #1 p4p. how can you put him before Fedor Emelianenko??? to all you gsp nuthuggers-gsp is not the best and can never be the best.he might be the champ again but he can’t be the best.his record says that.
GSP says he is in the best shape of his life in every interview, because he is always getting in better shape. If you where paying attention you would have noticed at UFC 79, GSP gassed Hughes in less than 2 rounds with his relentless pace. GSP DIDN’T say he was in the best shape of his life when he fought Serra, because he was in the worst shape. It’s easy to put GSP ahead of Fedor. First, in case you haven’t noticed, Fedor STOPPED fighting over 2 years ago. Second, although Fedor beat a few of the top guys (in only one org.might I add), he didn’t finish them. GSP DESTROYED the LONG reigning champ in 2 rounds and FINISHED most of the top guys. At least 10 of Fedors wins are against total CANS. If Fedor fought the tight competition GSP did in his last 10 fights he probably would have lost a couple too.

It will soon be. Out of Serra’s 10 fights in the UFC, 70% went to decision. 1 was a victory submission. 1 was a TKO. and 1 a loss via TKO. This does not sound like a champion to me.
GSP on the other hand has 11 fights in the UFC. 4 went to decision (36%) 2 wins by submission. 4 wins by TKO. Victories over Penn, Parisyan, Sherk, Hughes x2, Trigg, Miller, Kosheck. GSP is the real champ here. Just a matter of time before he takes his belt back.

Gord: Cro Cop has signed with them already. Its official. As for Arlovski, we wont know anything until after his fight at UFC 82, but it is a possibility. I am just thrilled to hear that those organizations will work together to hold a lightweight and middleweight grand prix. The mma tournaments are something that many people have missed since the demise of PRIDE… Thank God for the Japanease, because if it was up to Dana white…we would never see an MMA tournament again.
I would like to see Matt Lindland and Sakuraba compete in the middleweight tournament… Its going to be great!
Can anyone tell me if Arlovski becomes a free agent as soon as his fight at UFC 82 is finished, or does he have to wait till April to start negotiating a contract with other organizations?
I just pray that he doesnt sign with EliteXc or Strikeforce. If he isnt going to stay in the UFC, we need him to land with M-1, DREAM, or World Voctory Road!

The one thing that is not taken into consideration (or that I’ve seen mentioned from these comments) is that Serra was seriously injured not all that long ago. To comeback from a serious injury like that and be at the same competative level is very…very difficult. I can’t stand Serra but I concede his win the first go around. That said I would say it would be very suprising for him to come out victorious this time considering his messed up back, long lay-off and the hurricane of an opponent that he’ll be facing. I don’t like to pick winners / losers but all things considered I believe GSP walks out of the cage wearing a new belt.

Exactly, and Im a huge GSP fan. GSP’s biggest weakness is his mentle state if he goes into this fight thinking about the last time he dosnt stand a chance. Hopefully he can avenge his lose like he did against Hughes. But man I will be devastated if he loses again.

I’m a big GSP fan (bias b/c I’m fr. Canada) and I really want to see him win but I wouldn’t count Serra out by saying he doesn’t have a chance. And he has more than a punchers chance too. I watched some of his footage, he almost knocked out Karo P. the same way he did in GSP 1. There is the possiblity that their styles clash (ie Rich Franklin, Anderson silva). Yes serra bugs me, and yes serra doesn’t always display the skill level of GSP but he usually wins, has a good record (16-2?) and a lot of experience and heart. To say that he doesn’t have a chance is foolish. If he does lose, his 2 fights following will show if he drops off the WW world. Matt huges, then Chris Lytle. Go GSP!!!!!!

Best GSP can do is tie their personal series at 1-1.
That’s the bottom line.
I’m a GSP fan and yes, Serra is not afraid of GSP (Hughes was afraid for the last two fights)
Currently I think GSP will win, but I wouldn’t bet more than I could afford to lose. No fighter should ever take Serra lightly, he is a dangerous man….skilled, well rounded, in excellent shape, professional and definetly has got the mental game covered. Usually he fights mistake free and the difference will be as so often the case in elite championship fights, stengths over weaknesses.
In this case GSP’s reach and speed……something that Serra has already overcome once.
It’s a pick ’em again.

I think in fight two Hughes wasnt scared, just an idiot that thought he could box.
I agree though “Ny”, that Hughes was very afraid in fight three, which had a lot to do with why he wasnt at his top, I believe alot of the dominance had to do with the combination of the two factors, gsp has gotten better, and Hughes is not quite as good as he used to be, and he was nervous.

NATHAN.
Being a fan and having a favorite, does not mean one can’t also think realistic and be nervous for there favorite.
GSP is not my favorite, but I like him a lot, he is incredible, & if anything, ive said numerous times im rooting for him because I want to see an eventual Penn/GSP rematch more than anyhting.
But that doesnt mean i’m not nervous about Serra. Serra has very heavy hands as we saw, he is very hard to finsih, regarding the stand up, I believe he can take GSP’s punches, better than GSP can take his. And in the ground game WHEN gsp puts him on his back, this will be the only time EVER (besides 2 seconds with Penn) that GSP is dealing with somebody more than familiar with fighting from the position GSP puts him in.
Regardless, if you really were a REAL GSP fan, and really cared about him winning or not, Serra should make you a little nervous, in EVERY aspect of the game.

I do and always have said ,“He got beat by the better fighter THAT NIGHT”. Those are the key words “That Night”. Serra looked great and GSP was the worst he has ever been in the UFC. He’s human and like all people he will go through times where he is not at his best. If Serra can beat the GSP that showed up to every fight but UFC 69 then Serra is a better fighter period. The thing is GSP wasn’t his confident self(watch him walk to the octagon and tell me he was himself)so you are going to here people saying this as the reason he got beat by a guy who shouldn’t have beat him. I would never call a punch lucky, because it was thrown with intent, however I would say Serra was fortunate that GSP didn’t show up 100%,because odds are, Serra would be 1 belt short of being champion. This is nothing against Serra, he had no control over how GSP showed up and he won the fight at hand. Just saying ,I think this next fight will tell a different tale.

LOL anyone who thinks serra has a chance should put some big money on him. This is how the fight will go gsp takes serra down immediately and elbows the living shit out of him, broken nose and orbital bone, for the first round. Serra is going to get seriously hurt during this fight and gets taken out on a stretcher, his back will get hurt again. Gsp throws serra around like a rag doll and viciously ground and pounds him and then gets saved by the ref in round 2. Unless gsp stands all night with serra, he has NO chance. If he could throw hughes around like a rag doll, I guarantee he can do this to serra. Gsp is so paranoid about losing again like he did, he stays clear of the pocked, serra’s only chance, serra is going to lose and lose badly, poor serra.

*Matt Serra wins over GSP by rear naked choke in rd. 1
Matt Serra is THE most under-rated fighter in the UFC. Serra was well on his way to a title shot when he ran into Shonie Carter’s “Hail Mary” spinning back fist. A couple tough fights following against BJ & Parisian derailed his momentum. The appearance on TUF reingigorated his career, and he is not going to let GSP take it all away now
*Travis Lutter over Franklin by submission
Franklin has nothing to answer Lutter’s ground game and will suffer a humiliating defeat here.
*Quarry by TKO over Starnes
All Quarry has to do is punch him in the gut…he’ll quit.
Never seen such a display of cowardice in MMA. As soon as the fight is not going his way, look for Starnes to find a way to quit.
*Bisbing over McCarthy. TKO
Bisbing is over-rated, but as long as the UFC is making inroads into the UK market, they need British content.
That’s why they’ve givin him this cakewalk.
*Danzig (close)decision over Bocek
Danzig will have his hands full with Bocek. This could be the highlight fight of the night.
*Sam Stout WILL beat the snot out of Rich Clementi KO. Sam has fought WAY tougher guysthan Rich. I like Clementi, but he’s in way over his head in this contest.
*Belcher by stoppage over Day. Day’s performance over Loiseau was impressive, but Belcher doesn’t have the mental block probs put on a clinic.
*McDonald over Doerkson AGAIN!!! How many times must we endure this!!!
*Herman vs Maia
This could be an upset. Maia is unbeaten and could present a real challange to Herman. I’m picking Maia.
*Goulet’s a stiff, but they’ve givin him another stiff to fight. Look for him to eat a big shot and wake up with a crowd around him

Listen to all you Canadians talking S… about Serra, let me tell you Serra is not Hughes, Serra ain’t scared of your Captain Canada, ok. But keep doing just that, like we say in the USA “keep talking that s…” I heard it a year ago, poor serra, I feel sorry for serra, blah blah, he already knocked him the f… out! Standing BRING IT! Ground BRING IT!
Any body who knows anything about mma knows that the first knockout was a fluke! I agree that he has a punchers chance, but thats about it. Matt Sera insnt in the same league as GSP, or Matt Hughes. Watch the fight and i will send you an I TOLD YOU SO!!! after he gets stopped in the first or second round

No matter how good you are there is always a fighter out there with a style to beat you.I mean look at Chuck Liddell he looked near invincible and Rampage destroyed him on 2 occasions. No one person is invincible and were all just flesh and blood.I think if everyone believes George will walk through Serra they may be in for another shock. The kind of loss he suffered will be a real mental and physical challenge to overcome.Historically those are the kind of losses that are almost impossible to come back from.
I love GSP and I’m Canadian, don’t get me wrong,I hope he pulls it off.But at the same time I think Serra is underrated and under estimated. He can hurt you with one punch and that’s all it takes.George’s best bet is to take it to the ground where he dominates everyone.I can’t see him trading bombs with the heavy handed Serra.
I hope the fight lives up to the hype and is a 5 round war!

I agree that GSP will win the fight, but it won’t be a complete demolishment as most people have suggested. Serra is a talented competitor with superb BJJ skills, heavy hands and tremendous heart. I didn’t give Serra a chance in the first fight, and he won, so I’m not going to make that same mistake.
As very few other people have posted, Serra has a puncher’s chance, but to say his win was a fluke is sad, and shows the level of respect that people give him as a fighter. He beat GSP fair and square, and was the better fighter. Doesn’t matter if GSP would win 99 out of 100, that one abberation was GSP’s fault and Serra’s mental toughness to say fuck the world and show what he can do. Hell, sounds like most of the people want to decide the winner just by looking at the paper and stats, and forgetting that until they fight, it’s anyone’s game.
I see the fight going the distance, and GSP winning a unanimous decision. Serra has only been knocked out once, and I believe that was because Serra got cocky and wasn’t fighting smart. Serra has matured into an intelligent, crafty and tenacious fighter who will not let GSP have the belt without making him earn it. It’s going to be a good fight, but I see GSP taking him apart from a distance, until Serra goes for the takedown and GSP either defends, or throws Serra on his back.
Five rounds of Serra eating punches, failed take downs and Serra on his back will result with GSP the victor. But it won’t be a knockout, and Serra will show that while he will never hold the belt ever again, that he earned it and gave GSP hell to get it back.

GSP doesn’t need to “trade punches” with Serra. Why risk another lucky punch? GSP underestimated Serra in general, and his punching prowess in particular. He won’t make that mistake again.
GSP will use kicks from the outside, jabs, and superman punches following kick feints. Then when he’s got Serra off balance, he’ll shoot. Serra won’t be able to stop him if Hughes and Koscheck couldn’t.
Then it’s gnp to set up a sub, or TKO via ref stoppage.
