UFC Fight Night 13: Stephan Bonnar injures knee and is forced off card

The rise to the top of the light heavyweight division for Stephan Bonnar has hit another snag.
According to Yahoo!Sports.com, the "American Psycho" has sustained a serious knee injury while training for his upcoming bout with Matt Hamill at UFC Fight Night 13 on April 2 from the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfiled, Colo., and will be on the shelf for six months.
Here's a snip from Bonnar:
"I was doing nothing out of the ordinary, just working on my (jiu-jitsu) getting ready for my fight. I heard a pop and I thought, 'Damn, what is this?' I walked around on it a little, but when I got home, it was really stiff and swollen."
The finalist on season one of The Ultimate Fighter will require surgery to repair the torn ligaments in his left knee, which will keep him out of action for the better part of 2008.
Bonnar just returned from a steroid suspension that kept him out of competition for the first half of 2007. He appeared to come back rejuvenated, winning back-to-back fights against Mike Nickels and Eric Schafer in convincing fashion.
There's no word yet on whether or not a replacement will be announced to take on Hamill. However, there seems to be more than enough time to locate and adequate fill-in.
Hell, give Tim Boetsch another call. He likes to beat people up on short notice.
Even though it's unfortunate that Bonnar is off the SpikeTV special, it is still absolutely loaded. To check it out click here.

wow…now who will the gorilla fight.
give him Sokoudjou or Gouveia. make it interesting..make him work for it or just lose outright.
hamill has the potential…just does not use it.

Bonnar was one of the biggest draws of the card. Too bad he’s gone but I love your suggestion of Boetsch.

I miss the old days when I used to post along with other intelligent people who knew MMA. I wish you would try to show some respect.
I don’t think Bonnar is going to fake a 6 month injury when he is on the comeback trail. I wish him a full recovery and can’t wait to see him back.

These guys got to take a few safety measures for training here. it seems like almost every day one of the topics is to announce an injury. if Tanner’s return gets halted, I will simply not accept it.

lol heck yeah, see if Boetsch wants the fight. i’d love to see him fight again. i don’t think he’d do quite so well against hamill though.

dude i like the sound of hamill vs evans. lets face it evans keeps getting lucky in his fights. he would have lost to that jackass tito if it wasn’t for the point reduction. i didn’t see the evans and bisping fight, but i heard that bisping should have won. hamill was cheated in his last fight with bisping. i would have loved to see bonnar fight again, but i think evans’ time is up.

No matter how hard you train you gotta feel that the other guy is training just as hard if not harder. Accidents happen during training. Some guys can fight with certain aches and muscle pulls etc. but you should never mess around with concussions, back, knee or neck injuries. Those can end careers if you come back too early. This sucks. I’m a fan of both guys. oh well. what can you do.
Would be nice if Bisping could step up so Matt can pound him again.

I totally agree. So much crap gets posted that proves people have no idea what they’re talking about. It would be nice if people would only post things if they have something remotely intelligent to contribute.

Rashad Evans or Sokoudjuo as replacements. I think Evans could be a boring fight with Hamill as both are wrestlers with not a lot of GnP.
Sokoudjuo didnt impress me on his debut, hopefully his performance will be better.

I was really looking forward to this fight dammit. Leaves the perfect opportunity for bisping rematch tho as stated earlier. Does anyone know if houston A. is on this card cos im not sure if the’re moving him to 83 or 84…

I agee, Bonner has looked on top of his game. He displayed beautiful grappling against Nicols. Bonner is a top notch entertainer….never a dull moment with him in the cage.
Imagine if in like 3 years Forrest has the title and Bonner works his way up to the #1 contender spot. Just imagine him vs. Forrest in a 5 round title fight….THat would be explosive but unlikely

Sorry to get off topic, but I asked this question at the end of the day yesterday and many people missed it. I hate to re-ask it again but I am very curious to hear your opinions.
How would a fight between Tim Sylvia vs. Hong Man Choi turn out? Just curious to here some input on this!

I read somewhere that Yerrenoka will make an announcement on Febuary 13th announcing its next event. I thought the 1st even was pretty good. I am happy to see they are putting on another event because I just thought it was a one time thing.
I expect to see a great Lightweight match up at this event:
“JZ” Calvancante vs. Shinya Akoi…. I have nothing to support this claim. But this match was a highly anticipated match up that was supposed to go down at the 1st Yerrenoka event, but one of them got hurt so it never happened.
One of my dream matches would be: A grappling match between BJ Penn vs. Shinya Akoi….Strictly grappling…..that would be the most exciting display or grappling EVER IMO!

Hell, give Tim Boetsch another call. He likes to beat people up on short notice.
That’s a really good idea actually…it would really put Boetsch on the map if he were to be another replacement and then take out Hamil. I thought he looked really good against Heath. Those straight leg kicks were very effective and you don’t see too many fighters using them anymore. It’s effective tactic to keep a fighter at a distance and to score a shot. That would be effective against Hamil who is a guy that is constantly coming forward. I’m really looking forward to seeing Boetsch fight again in the UFC.
It’s too bad Bonnar is hurt though…this was going to be a very interesting matchup and I hope we get to see it later on this year. Luckily this card is so stacked that they can easily put another big fight onto the televised portion of the card…I vote for Aurelio/Spencer or Alexander/Irvin…I’d even be interested in seeing the return of Neer to the UFC at LW against Din Thomas. Neer has some nasty elbows.

Buster: I agree with everything u wrote. Except that I believe Houston Alexander vs. Irving is already scheduled to be televised.
If they bump Hamil off the card they will either replace it with:
Fisher vs. aurelio or Neer vs/ Din Thomas.
I owuld prefer to watch the Thomas/Neer fight.
However maybe they can find a suitable replacement to fight Hamil in time for this event. Boetsh would be an excellent idea. or they can go another route: Soko doesnt have anyone to fight in the future. The UFC might want to build him up against a lesser opponent…Hamil would be perfect. After all Sokoudjou is only 23 years old, he has a ton of potential to one day be special, maybe they should let him fight some B-level fighters and get him some wins. I would not object to Sokoudjou vs. Hamil….However I will admit that scenario is unlikely. Give us Boetsh vs. Hamil!

Recently some of us were speculating on who Marcus Davis would face at UFC 85 in June. He is said to be facing a top 10 opponent, probably even a top 5 welterweight. I proposed Diego Sanchez as his opponent.
Another great opponent for Marcus would be Carlos condit. However this is just wishful thinking because he is champion in the WEC and unfortunately I dont see Zuffa moving him up to the UFC anytime soon. Still it would have made for a great fight!

How about getting Nakamura some burn? I think him vs. Hammil would be a very interesting match up. I dont think Hammil should be fighting guys like Evans or Sokoudjou yet. Boetsch is another great call. The guy really impressed in his total domination over David Heath. James Irvin too.

i think bonnar was going to lose that fight anyway. Remember when he fought rashad evans? He was getting taken down at will and his submission attempts were as telegraphed and obvious as i’ve ever seen. Not to say bonnar isn’t a quality fighter, i just think this may have been a poor style match up for him and a boring fight overall.

I completely disagree. bonner is a huge 205 lb fighter. He would have crushed him in the stand up, and completely outclassed him on the ground, ultimately submiting Hamil.

Speaking of Huerta, he said he wanted to take a 6 month break after his december fight with Guida. that would make a time table for his return at the earleist, UFC 85: in London or maybe the Finale of TUF 7 on I believe, June 21…dont hold me to that date.
I cant wait to see who he faces next. Any ideas? I would like to see Huerta vs. Danzig, but Danzig needs some quality wins before fighting a tough dude like Huerta.
At some point in the near future I would like to see Danzig vs. Nate diaz….that would make for a great main event for the Finale of TUF 7 in June. Who do u think takes that fight?

The two-time UFC champ vs. a guy who slipped away from Barnum & Bailey? That guy wouldn’t last a round with Sylvia, and I’m hardly Tim’s biggest fan.

Boetsh vs Hamill would be interesting. Boetsh is a wrestler but looked to be a very experienced striker against Heath. I’d have to give the stand up edge to Boetsh. We haven’t seen his wrestling ability (besides the throw onto Heaths head, lol) but I’m sure Hamill has the best wrestling in the division. Anything could happen in this match. Hopefully the UFC will make it happen.

bc so many fighters are dropping down to lightweight, that division is getting sick. I am an avid Huerta fan and I know he will come back strong and sock it to whomever Joe and Dana put in his path.

No the last thing I am trying to justify Fedor’s fight with Choi. I am just curious. Choi is supposed to be a K-1 level striker and beside’s Gan McGee who is no K-1 striker, I havent seen Tim stand n Trade against a striker that he doesnt enjoy a height and reach advantage over. If I had to pick a winner, I too would go with Sylvia, but I have to admit I havent seen enough of Choi to really offer an educated oppinion. Just being curious.
