UFC 84: Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic

Wilson Gouveia (10-4) will take on Octagon newcomer Goran Reljic (7-0) in a light heavyweight bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 24, according to MMAWeekly.com.
Gouveia flies relatively low in the stacked 205-pound division despite riding a four-fight win streak. He opened a few eyes with his knockout of Jason Lambert at UFC 80: "Rapid Fire" on January 19 -- not too shabby for the Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt who trains with American Top Team.
His only loss inside the Octagon is to Keith Jardine via unanimous decision back in 2006.
Reljic is a 23-year-old undefeated Croatian fighter who just recently signed a multiple-fight contract to compete inside the Octagon. He trains with the Roger Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in London, England, where he is a purple belt. In addition, he has a solid working relationship with UFC heavyweight fighter, Mirko Cro Cop.
It should be interesting to see how the young prospect performs against a tough veteran on the big stage in Sin City.
UFC 84 most likely features the championship fight between lightweight belt holder, BJ Penn, and former division king, Sean Sherk. To check out the rest of the rumored fight card click here -- it's solid.

Looks like another solid card. Lets hope wanderlei faces either Jardine or Soukoudjou. Preferably Jardine.
Maybe I am completely off and the UFC wants to give wanderlei a lesser opponent and start building him back up.
Question…Do u think wanderlei will face a big gun like Jardine or Wanderlei or a B-level fighter so that the UFC can try to build him back up?

I see Wanderlei fighting a top ten guy. Wanderlei is a gamer and probably wouldn’t want to get stuck fighting a can. I really want to see Wanderlei get a victory. I think Wanderlei would match up well with Jardine. The last time Jardine fought an aggressive striker(Alexander), he got knocked out.
How good is this card shaping up to be? Those are some awesome fights. The UFC is starting to produce some great cards.

I like Wilson. He is a good fighter. Eventhough he lost to Jardine, he did take the first round from him before he gassed. I remember Rogan saying during that fight that he is known for coming out strong then fading. If his last fight with Lambert is any indication, maybe he is growing as a fighter.

Wilson Gouveia should be fighting a more well know fighter than this guy. He is now 4-1 in the UFC, only losing his octagon debut via decision to Jardine. Even like a Stephan Bonner would work at this point of Gouveia’s career. But Bonnar is fighting Hamill at the next fight night. But someone at the same level as Bonner.

I think you are right. If Lambert would have beaten Wilson…everyone would be on hearing screaming that Lambert deserves a better opponent. In my eyes Wilson and Lambert were on the same level, Wilson KO him, so Wilson should be moving up the latter. He should be fighting Soukoudjou and Wanderlei should be fighting Jardine…. A UFC ranking system needs to be put in place that way the UFC couldn’t justify putting together matches like this that make no sense.

Jake Sheilds said he wants to move up in weight (185 lb) and give Frank Shamrock a beating….I would LOVE IT!!! I despise Frank.
Sharock said he was down but only if Sheilds would move up to 185lb…Sheilds said he would do it in a heartbeat… Man up Frank, or r u gonna weasle your way out of this fight too!

They should agree on a catch weight if they are serious about fighting each other…maybe like 178. I think Sheilds would do well in a fight against Frank and I’d like to see someone shut up Frank…hopefully Cung Le will finally do that but it’s a tough call cause he’s never fought anyone the caliber of Frank.

I think they should give him Jardine but it’s hard to say what the UFC will do nowadays. Jardine is a recognized name but I think he’s pretty one dimensional. He likes to bang and throw those nasty leg kicks…wow they look painful. Haven’t seen Jardine on the ground very much at all in any of his fights because he’s always matched with a banger. I think if Jardine were to fight a non-striker…we’d see what he’s really made out of becuase I think that would expose him. Wanderlei can risk another loss cause he’s only lost once in the UFC and I don’t think it would hurt him too badly in the rankings. If they’re going to give him a B-level fighter…why not Boetsch? He proved himself against Heath and had a highlight reel of a fight….maybe Tomasz Drwal…those aren’t big names but they’d be good matchups for Wandy. I’d still like to see him against Jardine though…I think Wandy would win as long as he checks those kicks.

I hear that Jardine is very skilled on the ground. I will admit I have never witnessed this but I remember during TUF 2 season, the gameplan that Rich and Jardine came up with was to win the fight on the ground. So Rich obviously had to have seen Jardine’s ground skills while coaching him during the show..and he felt it was good enough for Jardine to beat hi opponents with. When Jardine actually fought, we didnt see much of the ground game though…but I do believe the skills are there.

if the ufc wants the axe-murderer to get a win they better not put him in there wit jardine…i say jardine takes it by decision

Hey Board! I was at my son’s schools talent show last night and Jason Lambert was there watching his boy perform. After the show we started chatting while we waited on our kids to come out. Jason said that Joe Silva had called him to let him now they now really want him to fight Wanderlei Silva now. Jason said that Wanderlei is way past his prime and he is a one dimensional fighter…always looking for the KO. Jason said that Wandy will be the victim of the ground and pound and another W for the punisher. I will have more info this week because his son and my son are attending a birthday party for a little girl in their class…more updates to come….

silva should drop 2 middleweight! he isn’t not going 2 make it in the ufc anymore without drop a weight class!

REALLY?!!!?!!! Now that would be interesting. Being a Jake Shields fan, I’d love to see that fight, but I wouldn’t want it happening at 185. Like someone else said, meet in the middle, 178. Or even 180.
Most people really like to dis on Frank Shamrock, but he is a TOP 185lb’er. I would see this fight being very tough for Jake. Jake needs to be concentrating on winning that EliteXC belt first, but then again, he IS fighing Drew Fickett. BUt in MMA you should never look past your opponent. If it wasn’t for his and Dana’s beef, Frank would have given Anderson Silva a run for his money (not saying he would have won, but it would be a good fight, it couln’t be worse that Silva/Franklin 1 or even 2 for that matter). Franklin vs Frank would be interesting as well.

i thought u said a level up. Soukoudjou sucked last fight. i think the should let him get comfortable in the ufc. instead of tring 2 drive all the pride fighters out of the ufc. bcause that is what they r doing.

yo he said he wantted 2 move up 2 185 and fight frank. so that is what he should do. catch weight? this isn’t a hughes gracia fight is it? or even the rich franklin vs travis lutter or joe riggs vs matt hughes. NO catch weight!

Have you ever even watched EliteXC Jimbo? They have ALL SORT of wierd wieight divisions. For example, KJ Noons defeated Nick Diaz for the 166.2 lb title. Not that number exactly (I don’t even remember because its so dumb), but if they are willing to open up brand new wieght classes, I don’t see any issue with them having a catch weight match.
Also, the only reason Shields said that he’d fight him at MW is because Frank refused to meet in the middle. Frank will never fight anyone if he doesn’t believe he has the advantage. He probably said that he’d fight him at MW thinking that Shields would say no. Shamrock’s are morons…

Shamrocks are Morons, but I think Frank is worse of the 2 evils. Frank has all the skills in the world but wont fight anyone great, and finds his way to weasel his way out of them with out blantently loosing (Frank vs. Renzo). I never thought about Frank vs. Anderson, Hendo, and Franklin…they would all be great matches. Lindland is another guy that would whoop Frank! I HATE FRANK SHAMROCK ever since I saw his corny as trying to “raise the roof”…what a site that was.
And ViolentMike: u r 100% correct! The only reason frank suggested that weight is because he thought Sheilds would refuse…Little did he know Sheilds aint a B***h like him and he said anywhere, anytime, at any weight! Ball is in your court Frank…I cant wait to see the excuse he comes up with for getting out oft his fight!

Too right man.. every card since 79 has been solid.. not forgetting night like the TUF finale etc there has been some great fights. Also to be fair, after all the card bashing also about only having 4 televised fights etc, i think that works out better with more under card fights because they schedule in the best ones to the show.

Yeah I agree. Wanderlei is one of those fighters that u really dont care if he wins or looses. I wish him the best, and I want him to have success but I dont care if he is on a 10 fight loosing streak, as long as he keeps fighting like he did against
Liddell..I would pay and get excited to see him fight anyway

I would like to see wanderlei vs. Machida. Bet Machida will fight his ass off with the Axe murder chasing him around the cage.

Jardine does have good ground skills, just watch his old King of the Cage fights. Back then he was primarily a ground fighter and he used to put on clinics (albeit to lesser competition than he will find in the UFC).
