Clock is ticking on Mirko Cro Cop and the UFC ...

Quoteworthy:
"We're waiting to hear from him. We told him we'd wait for him to make a decision, but he's not making a decision.... The deadline is pretty much up, and I need decision from him by Monday (February 4)."
UFC President Dana White provides an update on the Mirko Cro Cop situation -- the 2006 Pride FC Open Weight Grand Prix Champion has a losing record inside the Octagon (1-2) and has not competed since UFC 75: "Champion vs. Champion" in September 2007. No word on what will happen if the deadline expires with no word from the Croatian.

He lost his type of fight to Kongo. I’m not sure if he’s the type of fighter that wants to stick around if he knows that he’s a win shy of being a .500 fighter in the UFC.

No way he’s lighter than Rampage.
I’d rather see him retire than move to 205. That’s acnowledging failur at heavyweight, and ruins his reputation in Pride. His issue is focus. I believe he got burnt out, and learning to drop weight wouldn’t be a good idea.

he would be a force at 205 where is will be almost the tallest guy, so his striking will be much more effective let’s not forget that he has dominated wanderlei both..

apparently he’s been weight training in order to make himself a bigger heavyweight. so i can’t see him dropping down to be honest.

Scratch my above comment. Don’t know what happened there.
He may retire. I know that he said once his term in parliament was finished in November 07 he would rejoin ATJ Lucko. However after his losses surely he has realised that he must dedicate himself fully to MMA or not at all. Anyone got any news about whether or not he is rejoining the anti-terrorist squad because if he is his fighting days are over.

Come on..lets see the GG rematch – both coming off 2 losses

I like CroCop. I hope he sticks around and starts training full time. CroCop could still make some noise in the heavyweight division.

he still has some fights left in him i want him to fight andrei arlovski that would be a great fight
by RPO18 on Feb 4, 2008 11:32 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
crocop cant compete in an octagon as he has no ground game
a ring covers up deficiencies in that area as it appeared to be easier to get back to the feet
also no elbows in pride seriously improved his chances of not being stopped
GNP with just fists is nowhere near as effective
submission guys would prosper under pride rules as it was far easier to grab an arm while being pounded
the rule change seriously hurts pride fighters and takes away kicking on the ground which is a massive hit to the chute box arsenal
NOG is relatively unaffected by the change as kicking downed opponents wasnt part of his old game plan
elbows being dropped in the guard may be problematic tho as its more likely to get him cut and get the fight stopped
would expect fedor to be fine too

Yeah for Arlovski, then Cro Cop would be 1-3 in the octagon and no chance for a come back

I think his issue is like mental… similar to how GSP was for a short while… hope he sorts his head out because regardless of what all the armchair supporters on this site say he is still good for the money!

Unfortunately, CroCop has shown that he is a one-dimensional fighter. He seems so desperate to try and land the kick, that he ends up chasing everyone around the cage and gets frustrated when he can’t corner them down like he could in a ring. The first idiotic thing he ever did was not train in cage to begin with. But, by now he seems completely f—-ed mentally from the fight game, so let’s face it…his best days are probably over.

Mirko is nowhere near as light as Rampage, Rampage wals around at 225 off season , Mirko walks around at 245 off season. Simple facts.

I don’t think it is mental much at all. The sport has evolved, and he has not. Cro Cop is one of the all time greats, but just like Royce Gracie, Matt Hughes, etc… Fighters have just got more well rounded and he hasn’t

he is still a top h.w. if you compare him with who they have randy is gone maybe aa there is still some interesting match ups for him and i would rather watch him win of lose than some of the middle tier guys that they have.theres nog werdum tim gonzaga brock mir vera and kongo is there anyother decent h.w. in the ufc that i am not naming.he is a good name to have and i think he can still beat alot of those guys.
by roy on Feb 4, 2008 1:04 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Put him against a striker and it’ll be a fun fight to watch. He’ll never get near the belt though, unless he evolves with the sport.

This statement comes just days after Mirko Cro Cops website released this statement:
“Mirko is focused on only one thing lately – to get back on track,” a message on the web site reads. “His training regiment has been changed and now with Marijan Zizanovic, his former trainer, Mirko looks for a strong comeback. The details about his next fights are still not available, but it seems that Cro Cop will come back stronger once again.”
thats funny dana’s trying tp act like mirko does not want to fight anymore but everything out of mirkos camp says different.

I think he can compete in the octagon and win and be the champion one day. If you saw his first fight he did pretty well ,then lucky Gonzaga came and pretty much ruined this guy carreer in the UFC. Why do I say lucky because that what I think about him, until he proves me wrong. Then Mirko faced Congo. what has Congo done? Nothing , but it is not easy to perform after a big loss. Where is Congo’s groung game? Mirko has defeated fighters like Barnet, Wandy AND a close decision against Fedor and I dont know how many more. He will be back.

i didn’t help that kongo broke his ribs in the frist round. that kinda takes the fight right out of you.

Man i just wana see a KO of some sorts from him. Actually not even with his left kick i don’t care, just something. Man this is really started to bother me Crocop saying he is gettin ready to comeback and Dana white saying this now i just don’t get this at all. I was really getting pissed with Arlovski situation and i hope this doesn’t turn into a sort of Arlovski thing. As a fan i’am slowly loosing my patience and starting not to care about the fighters and the organization.

i said this before it looks bad for cro cop i think dana wants to cut him but make some other excuse for why he did.
by roy on Feb 4, 2008 3:38 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
he wants to fight, just look at your past news articles on him. Dana wants to cut him; i bet he isnt answering when mirkos camp is calling
by Brandon on Feb 4, 2008 3:57 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I dont understand why he’d want to cut him. You have garbage fighters like O’Brien, Sanchez and Palalei (sp?) that you’re throwing fights too, why not keep Cro Cop too? Seeing him get his ass beat by guys like AA, Lesnar, Kongo, Herring, etc. would all be exciting fights to watch cuz they’d be slugfests. He’s still gonna put asses in the seats no matter how many losses he racks up.

Ha where do you get your “simple facts”, fighters dont really have off seasons and theres no way cro cop walks around at 245 and cuts weight to compete at 225.
by BLOodyMEss on Feb 4, 2008 4:22 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
read the rest of the article its pretty good, why would he cut cro cop, why does he do alot of the things he does no barnett no lindland screwing over aa cutting tito.not everyone is going to be the champ but why cut all the tough compition he is about marketing his guys not the sport than trying to sell them as the best but not letting all the best talent in.
by roy on Feb 4, 2008 4:28 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Cro Cop can still sell tickets. It would be foolish for the UFC to void his contract or let him go. Even if he loses put him in the cage with another fighter and the fans will be intrigued. As long as he can keep selling tickets the UFC should keep him around.
PS: he should fight Brandon Vera next
by DB on Feb 4, 2008 6:04 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I could see why Dana would want to cut CC (really hope they don’t).
First he’s over paid for what he has actually done in the octagon to date. There’s no debating that
Secondly he isn’t actually that well known among the casual fans, most of them have no idea of his exploits in K-1 or Pride. He does not put butts in seats like a Liddell, Ortiz, Arlovski dare I say it, GSP, Hughes, Penn etc. Anderson Silva would be better known by the casual fan due to his success in the UFC.
Thirdly he may simply just be damaged goods in Dana and co.s eyes at this stage. They could be of the mindset that he was simply overrated and/or past his prime and is unlikely to turn things around. (Please let him prove this wrong.)
by RobH86 on Feb 4, 2008 7:03 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
and what about aa there not resigning him whats dana excuse for that.As long as people continue to buy ppv he does not care who is on them the cheapier the better for dana he is not out for the sport like he says thats fine but wuit trying to say your looking out for the sport, he is the one keeping the best competitors out, now look what there doing to aa
As the former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski’s contract with the UFC ends on April 15, without a contract extension, the promotion decided to bury one of the best known fighters in the sport on the under card of UFC 82.
It seems like a bad move by the UFC to not hang on to their branded celebrity fighters such as Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz, Andrei Arlovski and Nick Diaz, but instead pay outside fighters ridiculous about of money to fight in the UFC. (Cro Cop, Lesnar, Shogun, Chonan, Silva).
As a free agent, Arlovski will be able to shop around and become a headliner for one of the major deep waleted promotions like EliteXC, M-1 or HDNet Fights.

How could Cop be so good in Pride and suck so bad in the UFC. I know the fighters in the UFC are good, but are they that much better? That says a lot for the skill in the UFC.
I think Brock should retire Tim Sylvia with their next fight!!!

i would be surprised if AA goes anywhere. he seems to genuinely like fighting in the UFC and is content to stay there, regardless of how much he makes. at least that is the impression i keep getting from his interviews.

I am probably the biggest Crocop fan and I know exactly what is wrong with the guy. First of all I think physically and in terms of talent he has potential to be the best in the heavyweight division-however, I also think that first of all he has a big ego and his hype was bought by Pride but after his big shot reputation as a terrorist killer in North america was shattered by Gonzaga his ego was distroyed to a point that I think it has become a fear for him. I know about sport psychology and it can effect fighters-for example if you get into a bike accident you will fear bikes and the more that accident has effected you emotionally and mentally the more you’ll fear that situation so fighting is no different Gonzaga was the emtional mental scarring of the bike accident. When you walk around like you own the place like Crocop did and get headkicked to the head and have you ankle twisted in such a fashion your self image would go from God to zero. This is what has happend to Crocop and I am almost certain of it. That is why he keeps postponing his fights that is why he doesn’t come to America because his mind resists and hesitates the idea. I like Crocop but I think that his mind literally takes control over him so that he can’t function to the best of his ability. He is no longer smooth like he used to because he’s fighting the fear that his mind is producing. If you really watch his fight and listen to his interviews he says it himself to that he is nervous and he can’t focus in the octagon-well anxiety comes when you doubt and fear a situation and if you see his fighting he doesn’t use all his power, technique, agility, aggression-this man is dangerous if he uses all of that…LONG STORY SHORT I CAN PUT MY LIFE ON THE IDEA THAT IF HE GETS THE BEST DAMN SPORT PSYCHOLOGIST IN THE WORLD HE WILL BE THE UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION I AM SO CERTAIN OF THAT. Look at GSP that guy is talent, creative, well-rounded, just the scariest fighter in welterweight if his mind is right believe me Crocop and GSP might look like very different people but they are almost the same nature as a character with different weights. If you see his fights in pride he was so agile, strong, fast, aggressive, dominant, he was looked up to and respect so after you come from that to headkick to head in such a fashion MAN I FEEL FOR HIM SO MUCH I mean when I see such a unfair thing I really wish I could help that man start winning or just going back to his normal self

Lesnar vs Herring would be an interesting fight…all out slugfest…WAR LESNAR!!!!
by ICEMANIA on Feb 5, 2008 7:57 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yo Dasdus i think you seriously are looking to deep for a reason why cro cop isnt at the top atm… fact is he lost a fight due to KO, then fought a fellow kickboxer who has plenty of size and skill… Mirko busted a rib in that fight which would explain those sloppy kicks and lack of punches. MMA fighters tend to be judged based solely on recent performances.. if you ever wrestled or anything like that you also meet the same guys at higher competition and they often exchange wins.. just depends on the day. Psychology may be a factor but for gods sake hes only lost a couple fights no biggie even if he loses again it wont matter to me, fighters lose and he didnt look any different than the normal mirko in the first round against Kongo he was doing great then slowed down for a reason…

and comparing cro cop to GSP is iffy.. Cro cop is a tiny man at HWT and GSP is massive for WW that makes a big ass difference
