Hardcore Championship Fighting (HCF): 'Destiny' on tap tonight in Canada

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira -- who will take on Tim Sylvia at UFC 81: "Breaking Point" for the interim heavyweight strap -- is not the only "Nog" in action this weekend.
In fact, his twin brother, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, will meet up with Todd Gouwenberg during the main event at the Hardcore Championship Fighting (HCF): "Destiny" show tonight at The Stampede Corral in Calgary, Canada.
This will be the first fight for "Little Nog" since losing to Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou via knockout at Pride 33: "Second Coming" in February 2007.
In addition, embattled UFC heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, will be in attendance this evening to corner (whose name you more than likely recognize), Mike Pyle.
Last night the entire field of fighters tipped the scales for the official HCF: "Destiny" card. Here are the results:
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (206) vs. Todd Gouwenberg (204.5)
David Loiseau (193) vs. Jason Day (194.5)
Gegard Mousasi (194.5) vs. Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos (188.5)
Thomas Schulte (155) vs. Garett Davis (155)
Derrick Noble (170) vs. Brendan Seguin (170)
Damir Mirenic (169) vs. Mike Pyle (171)
Andrew Buckland (185) vs. Dan Chambers (185)
Myles Merola (156) vs. Ariel Sexton (155)
Tim Hague (262) vs. Miodrag Petkovic (253)
Nabil Khatib (185.5) vs. Lucas Rota (184.5)
Babian Cortez (147.5) vs. Juan Barrantes (147)
This event also features highly regarded Costa Rican lightweight, Ariel Sexton -- a fighter who we have been following for the last few months. He is set to make his return to Canadian scene when he faces Myles Merola.
Sexton -- who previously won an eight-man tournament in Costa Rica -- recently signed a long-term management deal with Make It Reign Management. He has since inked a long term deal with HCF and will look to continue his rise in the lightweight ranks.
For his upcoming bout with Merola, Sexton -- a brown belt Brazilian jiu-jitsu student under the late Ryan Gracie -- has been training for tonight's fight with the prestigious Renzo Gracie camp in New York.
Here's a snip on his progress from Sexton:
"This is the second time that I've trained in New York and each time the training gets better. Training with fighters of this caliber is really going to elevate my game, I've been invited to come train here for all of my fights and I can't wait to be back."
Good luck, Ariel.
HCF is the biggest MMA event thus far in the year to hit Canada (UFC 83 is less than three months away). If you're in the Calgary area definitely check it out -- the action gets underway at 7:30 p.m. For more details click here.

So Mike Pyle turned down a fight for the belt in EliteXC because he felt he wasn’t being marketed properly. And he signs with THIS company? And is fighting Damir Mirenic? He just lost to Jake Shields in EliteXC in what was supposed to be for the WW belt.
Maybe Mike Pyle doesn’t understand that there is an exchange rate and the Canadian dollar isn’t worth as much as the American dollar…

anyway, I live in Calgary but I don’t plan on going to the show, to be honest I don’t expect the show to do well, there has been little/no advertising at all for it.
too bad because the card looks pretty good.

Actually VioletMike I guess you have not been paying too much attention to the Canadian dollar not that there is any reason for you to lol but as of yesterday the canadian dollar is trading at 1 Canadian dollar = 1.0008 U.S. dollars.
I am from Calgary and going to this. It should be pretty sweet concidering Randy is supposed to be there to corner one of his fighters.

Yeah, he’s not fighting. My bad. In my own defense, it says this on the official HCF Web site:
MMA legend Randy Couture will be cornering John Alessio and Mike Pyle.
Even the poster says it. But it appears Alessio has been replaced by Brendan Seguin. I must have missed something and assumed he was still on the card.

Thanks for the correction guys! That’s interesting. I have never been to Canada before, and I was just thinking back to the days when you buy a book or something and it has the USA price and the Canadian price. It used to be something like $5 Canadian was equal to like $4 American.
Just out of curiousity, when did the two values get so close?

No problem Mike tried to do it in the nicest way possible since I know for the most part most Americans could careless about the neihboors to the north, too worried about border jumpers to the south :P The two values got really close this year with the Canadian dollar rising due mostly to our crazy real estate market and of course the American dollar slipping. Glad to be of help :)

As if this is not televised on PPV or fightnetwork.
by ro-J on Feb 1, 2008 11:09 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
All the promo posters and cfseries.com state to watch them on The Score Television Network, however, the Score’s TV listings mention nothing about the event until next Saturday (Feb 9th), which they’ve given a 1 hour timeslot at 8pm. Will this just be a highlights show of the event? Sucks that it’s not offered on PPV or the Fight Network. I guess the Fight Network doesn’t want to cut into their gay-ass wrestling schedule.

Actually, the guy fighting Nog is probably the best HW Canada has produced in years. Gouwenberg is relatively high on the Canadian mma scene. He is a big tough striker. Only one of his 5 wins went the distance. The rest were all KO’s. Nog is definately his biggest fight to date. I think Nog will sub him but here’s hoping Gouwenberg gets the KO.
I am kind of stoked about HCF actually. They are gobbling up some serious free agents and talent. Since this seems to be their biggest card ever, I am surprised that Babalu isn’t on it. In my opinion, he is their most well-known fighter.
HCF needs to merge with TKO and MFC to create a UFC rival in Canada.

ViolentMike,
The CAD dollar starting getting close after the sub prime mortgage crisis really hit in the USA. The Canadian economy in the western provinces is hot. At one time in November the CAD dollar was 10% more. But that was too high and the dollar has gone down since. But basically the have been par since October. So fighting in Canada is the same cash and Calgary has alot of cash as they are a oil city. I’m from Saskatchewan!!

Violent Mike,
Congratulations on not watching the news. Ignorance is bliss.
Im bummed this is not watchable in my area, and bummed further that i threw away all my canadian dimes.
Is this show streaming online anywhere?

Calgary is the texas of Canada. They pay less taxes on the dollar in Calgary then anywhere else in canada. In fact the taxes are just over 50 percent less in Calgary so you keep a lot more of that cash that is at par or higher then usa dollar. Stampedes, rodeos, cows, angus steaks and wrestling. Calgary is texas without guns. [least that aren’t officially licensed as hunting [cough] guns. A shotgun on the back of the window in a pickup truck in calgary is not an uncommon site though. They are also the home of only hot air giant cowboy boot balloon that I’m aware of.

Ohh and I meant to add Calgary is also the only Canadian city I’m aware of that you can still legally ride a horse down town in.

I though Jason Day had as much right to win as David Loiseau. Loiseau didn’t do any damage in any round. Another 30 seconds and The ref would have called the fight due to TKO in the 2 round after Day turned Loiseau and beat the crap out of him.
