UFC 83: Kalib Starnes vs. Nate Quarry

Kalib Starnes vs nate quarry ufc 83
Keeping with the Canadian flavor of UFC 83, Kalib Starnes (8-2-1) -- a product of Surrey, British Columbia -- will take on Nate Quarry (9-2) at the Bell Centre in Montreal on April 19, according to a report picked up by MMAonTap.com.

Starnes is a former middleweight contestant on season three of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). Since his appearance on the show he has had mixed results inside the Octagon, winning two of four fights.

His last time out he lost via technical knockout against Alan Belcher at UFC 77: "Hostile Territory" in round two. However, the real reason for the stoppage was because Starnes appeared to get whacked in the forehead with a hatchet.

Quarry returned from a massive back injury that required career-threatening spinal fusion surgery to knockout Pete Sell in the third round at UFC Fight Night 11 in September 2007.

It was the first time "The Rock" competed since losing via highlight-reel knockout to then-champion Rich Franklin at UFC 56: "Full Force" in November 2005.

This is a quality match up between two former TUF cast members (Quarry was on season one) -- both fighters have a lot at stake.

“Keeping with the Canadian flavor of UFC 83”

So shouldn’t this be UFC 84?

The UFC in England got cancelled, so this is 83….
Quarry looked pretty bad in his last fight, but to be fair, it was after a bad injury and long layoff so hopefully this will boost an already stellar card.

No they added more Canadian to UFC 83 so they are keeping up with the Canadian flavor.

I’d have to give it to Starnes, Nate looked too sloppy against Sell last time out. If he hasnt improved since then, Kalib will make quick work of him.

Yeah Nate did look absolutely horrible against Drago. I cant beleive he pulled it out with that KO punch. Anyhow shoudl be a good fight. Both are decent fighters.

I just hope that Starnes gets beat up pretty bad. I just want to hear him cry about how the $7000 he made for his Belcher fight wasnt even worth it….After hospital bills, training time etc, etc…..There are MANY fighters out there that would love to even have the chances Starnes has gotten. So if Kalib isnt happy about it, then let someone mroe appreciative have the chance

i hope it will be televise, nate quarry is still worth to watch even if he lost against franklin, all his wins in the UFC are by TKO’s!

Nate in his last fight..did what most thought to be un thinkable..Had some crazy spinal surgery..and step into the Octagon to take on a tuf fighter in Drago Sell..he was losing the fight going into the 3rd till..a right hand from the heavens sent Sell home earlier then expected. Wow..to me that was some inspirational ish..I’m always a fan of the Rock Quarry..on the other side of the pond..Starnes disappointed me..since his debut on the TUF season 3. He just has something that lets me believe when the going gets tuf..Starnes doesn’t step it up.

A fight I would like to see..

Nate Quarry vs Patrick Cote.

It’s nice to see so many Canadians on this card since I am Canadian and will be in attendance. I wish they had Cote on this card though…I was hoping they’d put him in there against Herman since they are both on 3 fight win streaks. I think that would make a great matchup.

This fight should be a decent one. I hope Quarry shook off the ring rust he showed in his last performance and has gotten his speed back that he used to have. I think Starnes is a solid fighter but I just don’t see him ever being close to a top 5 MW…hopefully he proves me wrong cause he has a solid skill set.

does anyone really care about this one?

yes but because of Nate, Starnes got lucky that Leben gassed when they fought and got his ass kicked by Belcher somebody said it I hated the way Starnes handled himself on the tuf show with him giving up because of a alleged rib injury, like ppl said if it where broken you cant even breath, anywho who can really know but him, all im saying is that ppl have fought with worse shit and for more than 2 rounds and Nate is a great fighter very clssy and likeable guy hell he might of even been the TUF winner if it werent for that freakish accident with Randy but who knows, he just ran into Franklin whom is still considered top 3-5 in the world, Nate didnt look as crisp but after a 2 year layoff and a freaking back surgery that was life threatning i think he deserves alil ring rust. I see Nate coming back very very strong and adding some depht to middleweight division, i wanna see Starnes cry after he gets KOd

And i have always liked Cote since he got man handled by Ortiz and managed to stay there all the fight, then he destroyed Doerksen but made a mistake, then the fight with Leben was thin close (could of gone either way), Lutter schooled him on the ground though. After that though he has really demonstrated his skills, he has a damn good chin look at his fight with Mcfedries his stance is excellent he is very light on his feet he has good combinations and not to mention some god damn nasty knock out power, always in shape, all he needs is to strenghten his BJJ and this guy could be top 10 easily. if you notice his stance is very wide also kinda like GSP so when you shoot very very hard to take him down so you would have to bang.

PhilQNY: U make a great point. Starnes just doesn’t show enough toughness IMO. Nate showed his will to win in his fight against Drago, after loosing most of the fight and KO Drago. Nate showed a ton of heart just by making it back to the UFC. I dont even like Nate, but I have to respect him as a man. I think he shook off the ring rust in his last fight, and I expect him to beat Starnes… Nate hits like 3 times harder then Kalib….Kalib however does have the advantage on the ground….Good match making by Joe Silva

I want to say Nate in round two via TKO. This is Starnes last kick at the can though. He might come out like a tiger fighting for his life. But he has dissapointed me before.

I’ll stick with Nate on this one.

Yes, it’s time for Quarry to move himself back to the top tier of the middleweight, the position where he was a former #1 contender.

any body who doesnt think kalibs ribs were not hurt well your sadly mistaken nobody ever said they were broken he had the cartilage torn off his rib cage and still has a marble size lump of loose cartilage on his chest.if kalib gets this fight to the ground theres no doubt he will win by submission.

by blake earl on Jan 31, 2008 3:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think he can win on the feet too.

Right. Just not his “intelligent” spelling. I like Quarry. Cool fighter. But, I want Starnes to win. Huge underdog odds on him, $$$$$.

you guys have not idea what heart is if you have never been in the ring. standing in front of a guy that wants to put his fist threw your head, not only when its one of the most skilled fighters in the world. incase anyone forgot kalib won all three rounds vs chris leban who is a striker, kalib is a jui-jitsu fighter with good standin. and kalib one the stand up and also buckled chris lebans knees in the second round. so in case you cant tell im telling all you guys who are 5 foot nuthin fat loafs to shut it and do a couple sit ups. oh ya i forgot about the money thing kalib has a daughter and a family to support in canada, so ya when you got to work and come home with no money and your family needs to eat would you be happy?

What a joke. Don’t know what was going on with Kalib but I was really embarrassed for him.

by bigtom on Apr 20, 2008 12:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Is it just me or does it seem that the fight was rigged?

Kalib did not engage Quarry at all. Even at the end when Quarry was mocking him (hand over facing swinging one arm) Klaib was still backing away.

I checked the odds and Quarry was favored to win, but if the someone was to bet on the fight going to decision with quarry winning or a 30-24 split…what would be the payoff on that?

Hey, it’s just a thought how often do you see a guy in the UFC running from his opponent for 3 rounds, afraid to hit his opponent (Quarry’s glass jaw) and not even engaging at clear opportunities?

I know Kalib came up through the Hell Angles promoted fights, just wondering if he ran into a little money problem, or someone was looking to make an impossible bet, possible.

Maybe Starnes’ pansy effort was due to his last appearance in the octagon where his medical bills cost more than his fight money against Belcher. Thinking about it he could have been annoyed with the UFC since they refused to cover the medical costs. Maybe it was payback before he goes to another organisation? (Get the money for one more fight, let Joe Silva release you from your contract, and then get booed by every single Canadian in the Bell Centre).
