UFC 82: Chris Leben vs. Alessio Sakara?

Chris Leben vs Alessio Sakara UFC 82
Alessio Sakara (12-6) will make his middleweight debut against Chris Leben (17-4) at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" on March 1 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Sam Caplan from ProElite.com confirmed the rumored match up earlier this afternoon.

The booking is a bit strange for two reasons: Sakara just competed at UFC 80: "Rapid Fire" on January 19, giving him less than six weeks between fights (not unheard of but rare). In addition, UFC 82 looks to already have nine fights lined up and this would make it 10 (again, not unheard of but rare).

Regardless, if and when this fight goes down it will more thank likely be an all out slugfest. Sakara is a former Italian professional boxer and Leben is someone who prefers to stand and trade even though is ground game is decent.

Put simply, it's highly doubtful that this one goes the distance.

Since his Octagon debut in 2005, Sakara has had an up and down tenure (3-3). Those mixed results could be attributed in part to competing in the wrong division, which is among the organization's deepest.

In addition, his training and conditioning have been other top concerns in the past. However, Sakara recently signed on to work with the prestigious American Top Team (ATT) camp down in South Florida to remedy those shortcomings.

Only time will tell if the adjustments are indeed worthwhile.

Leben is a former contestant on season one of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) who has had some growing pains of his own during his last few appearances. In fact, up until he knocked out a game Terry Martin at UFC Fight Night 11 he had lost back-to-back fights and three of his last four contests.

There's a lot on the line for both guys here: Can Leben capitalize on the momentum and make another run to the top or will Sakara steal his thunder and blossom with his new start?

..and Bisping gets Captian Miserable??

This is a good fight. Leben has really come a long way since TUF 1, both in his fighting game and his maturity. And he’s never been in a boring fight, except maybe his TUF fight against Koscheck.

And his decision win over Luigi. LAAMMMEEEEEE

Chris Leben should quit. I really hope Sakara destroys him.

I’ve never really liked Leben too much. He’s good for a knockout here and there, but I don’t think he’s ever going to ascend to the top of the division.

wow did u think of that! shut up man! i agree with pw. i would like 2 c this fight! leben got me 2 like watching him fight with his fight against terry martin. that was a great fight and alessio makes 4 another great fight. but leben i think is a slower puncher and not as hard as everyone makes of it. kind of like chuck lidell. but chuck is faster with his hands and feet then chris. i’m not saying i would just sit there and let them hit me but there are people that hit harder. den henderson knocked out w. silva but chuck couldn’t.

Don’t like Leben much, but I would think he has this one in the bag.

I actually really like this fight. Seeing Sakara at middle weight makes me scared for Leben. Although Leben did beat Terry Martin, so It’s up in the air.

WTF? How many name fighters are on this card? Now Leben, Diego and Arvlovski will all battle it out for the final main card spot… Koscheck is already in the prelims. Why dont they make a fight night or push some of these fights back?

by PP on Jan 28, 2008 3:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

PP sorry to tell you that Arlovski will be on the televised card. He is way too popular unless the UFC doesn’t want to give him any recognition before he bolts for another organization.

This is good news to me. I like Leben.

Its just too bad that they have so many good fighteres on this card and not enough time to show them all. Maybe it’ll be like UFC 80 and they’ll have such fast fight that they show 2 or 3 extra.

by DonnyG on Jan 28, 2008 3:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Donny, I had hoped that too about the fast paced fights, but most of these guys are slower and methodical fighters. UFC seems to be putting together some good cards. Move some down to UFC 83, which is lame right now. Dana must have some big plans for UFC 83, and must find a good main event for that one.

Ill be a leben fan till the day i die.. but i think this is going to be a tough fight for him.. although i think he will out will sakara late in round 2 or 3.. but i see the cat smasher finishing him.. and i love all the talk about how stacked the card is because im gonna be ringside and the news of leben being on the card, it makes me feel spoiled or even like i made the card myself .. thier gonna have to throw me out of the place when its over.. either that or i will be watching a blue jackets hockey game the next day.. WERE NOT WORTHY! WERE NOT WORTHY!

I STILL CAN’T GET OVER HOW MUCH UFC LOVES US AT COLUMBUS!!!! I AGREE WITH KRAZYHORSE2, IT FEELS LIKE I MADE THE CARD UP MYSELF. IT SEEMS LIKE ANYONE WHO IS GOOD AND CAN FIGHT THAT NIGHT IS…. WE ARE WORTHY!!! REMEMBER LAST COLUMBUS FIGHT, THE WHOLE PLACE WAS WAS GOING CRAZY, IT FELT LIKE AN EARTHQUAKE!!!!

by Joe on Jan 28, 2008 4:11 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

the last Columbus fight was the only time i have heard a crowd boo when the ref put the fighters back on the feet in the randy tim fight. That arena was gone crazy when randy landed that first punch every jump in the air.

WTF…..Dont put this fight on UFC 82 were no one will see it. I want to see this fight…great match up between….the man my buddy Violentmike has a man-crush on (Leiben) vs. my fellow countrymen Sakara….

Mike…..my boy is coming to get Leiben…on a serious note, this fight will be a BANG…they should have added this to a maincard or as a co main event to a UFN card. Great Match up by Joe Silva….I have no predictions on this fight other then someones getting KTFO!!!!

Everyone is really high on this card, and it is solid no doubt, but most of the fights are pretty one sided. There are tons of big names, but they are fighting much lesser opponents: Koscheck, Fitch, Diego, Arlovski (Jake O’Brien is not good)…..could be a really quick night for a few of these guys.

Alessio Sakara is a boxer. Not much else. Leben had solid wrestling and ground game to go along with his sriking. I would also say that Leben has heavier hands than Sakara. Sakara has yet to really prove a thing in the UFC (that thing being CONSISTANCY). I also think that Chris Leben has a better jaw than Sakara as well. Chris Leben KO first round, possibly 2nd. I don’t see this fight going past the 2nd. But then again, who thought Leben/Martin would go into the 3rd round….

with all rumored match ups i just hope some of them come true. I wish they would quit messing around and post them.Thats one thing i think the Ufc is screwing up on it is that they make people put there money up before they put out the card.they know they will sell out no matter what.i dont think it is right to treat the fans like that..but if this card gets all the fights u say they r i will be pumped

I’m hoping Chris does well this fight, he showed a tremendous amount of heart against a very hard punching Terry Martin.
He has been here in Honolulu at Icon for awhile now. In my opinion Chris really is an asset to the sport and its evidenced by his behavior at the gym and outside in the community.
Best of Luck to you Coach !! We will all be rooting for you!!

Here’s some numbers:

UFC Record of Sakara’s opponents in his wins: 1-9 or 10%
UFC Record of Leben’s opponents in his wins: 5-8 or 38%

UFC Record of Sakara’s opponents in his losses: 7-4 or 64%
UFC Record of Leben’s opponents in his losses: 10-4 or 71%

So it looks like Leben has faced tougher guys in his wins and tougher guys in his losses. This would point to Leben being the favorite in this fight. At least statistically.

Also, both guys are 3-3 in their last six fights.

Alright i understand how everyone wants to bash leben just because they dont like how he runs his mouth.. but you got to respect the guy, he could easily leave the ufc and challenge anyone for the title in any other organization, but he chose to stay in the ufc when he already got run through by anderson silva.. he moved to hawaii and re-dedicated himself because he knows he has to step up..

and why all the hate on ufc82 being stacked.. its a huge event with the arnold sports festival a block or two away.. Im not a dana white fan but i think this is a show of good things to come…

I can respect those comments on Leiben. Just on his name alone he could be fighting for other organizations titles. Look at Drew Ficket, he is getting a title shot against Jake Sheilds in EliteXC , which happens to be one of the bigger “other” organizations out there. Great point and a Good post!

Andy remember the NEW WORLD ORDER? well thats US! remember when Hogan wen “hollywood” and started wearing Black? Thats US. and this analogy is comming from a guy who hates fake wreslting (shows were my head is at now). I will have to get back to you on joining. I would have to take this matter in front of the “council”, if you get voted in, we will have to “Jump you in” our Cyber-Gang, inside an Octagon. You will have to suffer through endless trauma. The grappler PhlQNY, trying to rip your shoulder off via Gogo-pata while Mike goes all violent on you. Pretty Rough stuff…u might want to reconsider.
We are the New “Team Dagger” lol….God forbid I compare us to that idiot Kendall, and his tootheless side kick Solomon.

This is what I read on other sites today. Dont know how reliable this is, but since some of you have been speculating, I will share this:

" Vitor Belfort back to UFC !!!

Vitor is going to make his ufc return in April.

The ufc called him to know if he his ready to fight in April. Vitor says yes. Now he wait for the official annoucement.

Now Vitor is a member of the Minotauro team. He can train every day with Minotauro, Minotouro, Anderson Silva and more.

This was translated from portugease

Can anyone say Shogun vs. Vitor? Just speculating!

I dont know about any of you but I have a difficult time seeing Chris Leben win this fight or basically any fight against top tier UFC fighters at 185. He never ever looks like he is in athletic shape. I could care less about how great a fighter may be, you should look the part a la ….

Sean Sherk, GSP, Anderson Silva, Rampage, and Couture

So in other words, Leben who basically was losing to Terry Martin who was clearly out of shape, had previously lost 3 of his last 4 fights heading in to the Martin showdown.

Maybe Leben should consider the WEC

Sakara TKO at the middle of round 2

BAD BAD NEWS!!!!

UFC’s deal with Takanori Gomi fell through. No word yet as too why it fell through or if him signing with the UFC is even still a possability. The UFC is still interested…not sure he is.
Way to go Dana, you failed to sign another of the worlds best fighters. What did Dana do this time call Gomi’s camp a crazy bunch of Japanease dudes?

Or did he try to BS Gomi to death with foolish clauses like he did Fedor.

The UFC’s terms for Gomi’s contract:

1.No more eating with chop-sticks, while under contract with the UFC.
2. No rice, Sake and/or any form of Rice products are to be consumed while under contract with the UFC.
3.Gomi Must try to open his eyes more while condcting UFC sanctioned interviews…..Dana is rediculous!

I dont want to offend anyone…but I am just trying to illustrate how bad Dana is with dealing with other cultures. Not so much the Brazilians, because they have been down to fight in the USA for a long time. But he sucks with other cultures and BS contractual clauses.

I really like Sakara. I think his fight with Drew Mcfedries is one of my favorite fights. There is so much back and forth TECHNICAL striking.
If sakara comes in with good conditioning, he could give Leben problems because I think he’s definetly the more technicly sound striker. Sakara really impressed me in his last performance. I think he will do well with ATT behind him.

Didn’t Leiben get back in all of our favour with his win over Martin. WOW. That is a fight. Was a fight. Nothing technical at all… just throwing.

If Sakara stays light on his feet and out of range I see him winning via decision and really doing a lot of damage to Leibens face.

If Leiben closes the distance and puts his face down, closes his eyes and just starts throwing bombs, with the ditance closed Sakara is done… tough guy, but can not take a hard knock as we have seen.

I see Leiben railing off a W with another spectacular KO.

Yeah, right “he’s weak” “hes no ultimate fighter”. Great analysis. 7-3 career record in the UFC is real weak. How many people have 70% career winning record in the UFC? Not too many!

The dude may not be the best conditioned on most technical fighter in the UFC but he hits just about as hard as anyone out there. Ask any of the several dudes that he one punched. As he’s got as tough of a chin as anybody. The dude may have holse in his game, but he is by no means weak.

Leben may never win a title and you don’t have to like him as a fighter but what you said is just, well…weak.

I just have to say that most people that watch the ufc knows NOTHING about mma… some of the posts on here prove that.

This is gonna be a great fight, it might not last that long cause someone is deffinitly gonna get ktfo.

Leben is improving and he still has more power in his left hand than most in the division do.

but sakara is probably the best boxer in mma and is training with att so you know hes improving. He’s way faster and has just as much power as leben.

Just found it on youtube. Thanks John. I did not think that the knees were as stong as Rogan made them seem. But those punches at the end were great. He just held Veres’s head down and was like “EAT THESE!!!” Those long arms looked like a windmill…

They must have taken it down.
Myvideofight.com is kind of annoying in the fact that they erase a lot of their fights, so check that site on the 3 days after an event, and u will usually find whateverfight u want. But it mite not last on their long. New fights get uplaoded to that site very often, and other fights get erased, so I try to keep my eye on that site and check it out whenever I get a chance.

Leben is a cool guy and a great fighter…he has only been really beat up by anderson silva and look what he did to a great champ like rich franklin!! all you people talking crap about Leben are not fit to even get in the octagon…Leben is a top fighter…maybe not quite one of the very elite middleweights but still a great fighter…i for one will still be supporting him (like many others…he is very popular)…all you who think he does not belong in the ufc should get in the octagon to see how tough you are…spill some sweat and some blood and get some perspective first!!

And his decision win over Luigi. LAAMMMEEEEEE

Chris Leben should quit. I really hope Sakara destroys him.

sakara is my favorite fighter, and he will beat leben. i agree that he should leave the ufc, not because i dislike him (i love to watch him fight, and his drive and determination are motivating), but i think he’d be great for strikeforce or eliteXC, because he isnt as talented as the ufc fighters nowadays, and he isnt ever gonna be ufc champ. hes got the raw tuffness to be great in some of the other smaller shows, and i’d go watch him fight there.
