UFC 82: Evan Tanner vs. Yushin Okami official

Evan Tanner vs Yushin Okami ufc 82
Former middleweight champion Evan Tanner (32-6) will indeed return to fight Yushin Okami (22-4) at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" on March 2 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

We first passed along news of the match up back in December.

It's certainly a tough test for Tanner -- he hasn't competed in mixed martial arts since defeating Justin Levens via submission (triangle choke) at UFC 59: "Reality Check" back in April 2006.

In addition, Okami has been ripping through his opponents (sans Rich Franklin) en route to a potential title shot opportunity.

This is a great fight on a great fight card. And with this latest report from UFC.com we now have a clearer picture of the proposed line up.

Let's take a quick look (in no particular order):

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva (20-4) vs. Dan Henderson (22-6)
170 lbs.: Diego Sanchez (17-2) vs. David Bielkheden (12-5)*
170 lbs.: Jon Fitch (15-2) vs. Chris Wilson (13-3)*
185 lbs.: Evan Tanner (32-6) vs. Yushin Okami (21-4)
170 lbs.: Josh Koscheck (9-2) vs. Dustin Hazelett (10-3)
Hvywt: Cheick Kongo (11-3-1) vs. Heath Herring (27-13)*
Hvywt.: Andrei Arlovski (11-5) vs. Jake O'Brien (10-0)*
155 lbs.: Jorge Gurgel (11-3) vs. John Halverson (16-5)*
170 lbs.: Luke Cummo (6-4) vs. Luigi Fioravanti (11-3)*

*Fight not yet officially confirmed by UFC.com.

That's a ton of fantastic match ups and more than likely not enough time to show them all on the air.

Already, we know that the welterweight bout between Josh Koscheck and Dustin Hazelett will not be guaranteed to air.
And it's possible with Andrei Arlovski on the last fight of his contract that we will not see him compete, either.

Feel free to tell us which fights you would want to catch most in the comments section below.

Hey Mania? Did you ever get the fighter payouts for ufc 80?

by mattchupichu on Jan 26, 2008 1:05 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

You mean to say we have to watch Diego instead of Koschek? What about Kongo? Kongo had better be on the air.

Hey Mania? Did you ever get the fighter payouts for ufc 80?

Fighter pay-outs for events that take place in England are never made public. I am also real interested in seeing them but it wont happen.

If I had to guess, I wouuld say that BJ Penn made like $300,000 and Joe stevenson made $40,000

Does anyone remember how much Gonzaga made to fight Couture?

by john on Jan 26, 2008 1:10 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

You really think Penn made 300 G? Damn! Id say he made like 150G. I remember Werdum made some decent money when he lost to the Belarusan. Like 60,000.

I could be way off but Penn gave up his welterweight title after beating Hughes cause he didnt like what he was being offered. Penn comes from a very wealthy family and doesn’t need the money but he knows that he deserves the money because he is such s huge draw and its no secret that BJ is out of his mind, and I dontt hink he would have came back in the UFC if it wasn’t for BIG money. Find out what he made to fight Pulver at the TUF finale. Then we can add a lot more to that figure because that wasnt even a pay per view event. Then add some more money on to that figure because this was a title fight, and then we could better estimate how much he made. Now that I think about it your figure was probably closer then mone. I would say $150,000-$200,000

i want to see Fitch/Wilson, Arlovski/O’Brien and Kongo/Herring in addition to the much anticipated Silva/Henderson. The other three look interesting but those four in particular are the ones I want to see no matter what. Thank gawd for the internet, either way I’ll be able to find these fights somewhere on free tv.

i hope the arlovski fight is shown……i just can not see the UFC not resigning him…it wouldnt make any sence at all!!!! NO other company can compete with the UFC….I dont know why arlovski, and tito would ever want to leave….. if they do leave or anybody else for that matter they will allways be reford to as former UFC fighters….just wouldnt make sence??

Holy s**t I’m impressed, best card I’ve seen in a long time, nice. 7 out of 9 fights look very good, usually theres only 1 or 2 fights I’m looking forward to seeing, theres a lot of big names on this card, the main even will be crazy.

Trust me, Arlovski is gone. I dont like it either, but its the reality. Look forward to:
Arlovski vs. Fedor
Arlovski vs. Aleksander
Arlovski vs. Barnett
All to be held in M-1

I wish he would stay in the UFC but I really doubt it. Either way I am a Fan, and I will continue to follow him wherever he fights

u r nutts if u think that these arent good fights:
155 lbs.: Jorge Gurgel (11-3) vs. John Halverson (16-5)*
170 lbs.: Luke Cummo (6-4) vs. Luigi Fioravanti (11-3)*

9 out of 9 fights on this card are good!

What the UFC should do is take 2 fights off this card and throw them unto the UFC 83 card, which is only 1 week later. That way we can actually watch the fights.
The UFC should move these fights unto UFC 83:
170 lbs.: Diego Sanchez (17-2) vs. David Bielkheden (12-5)*
170 lbs.: Josh Koscheck (9-2) vs. Dustin Hazelett (10-3)

because they wont be televised anyway on UFC 82. In addition, both of these fights are better then Bisping vs. Mcarthy

I’m a little surprised that Tanner would be put up against Okami for his first comeback fight. Someone like Jason MacDonald makes more sense,

I GOT 3 OF THE BEST SEATS FOR THIS EVENT AND I AM A LOT HAPPIER THAN THE CINCINNATI CARD. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST CARDS I HAVE SEEN IN A WHILE AND IT HONESTLY SURPRISED ME THAT THEY PUT ALL OF THESE GOOD FIGHTS AND THE COMEBACK OF TWO GREAT FIGHTERS (TANNER AND ARLOVSKI) ON THIS CARD CONSIDERING THERE IS ANOTHER CARD NOT EVEN TWO WEEKS LATER. I AM ONE OF THE HAPPIEST COMMENTERS TODAY!!!

Great card, Okami will probibly win the fight. I’m very excited for the Kongo Herring fight. That one could go either way.

Are you crazy, have you seen kongo fight? he is going to dismantle hearing! heath has the sloppiest striking in the division and kongo has the most technical striking at heavyweight. this is a easy fight for kongo.

Tanner and okami is going to be a good fight. i dont know why everyone is counting tanner out. If he is in shape and ready to fight he can give okami alot of trouble.

I cant wait to Watch David Bielkheden vs diego sanchez.. i cant stand diego and bielkheden is a real tuff guy, i hope diego gets ktfo :)

I like Kongo but if you think this is an easy fight for him u r crazy. Hearing has 3 times as much experience and is crafty on the ground. What do u think Heaths just gonna stand and trade with Kongo? Not a chance. Kongo’s take down defense has improved and I hope he can keep this fight standing cause if he does, he will win. Hearing has fought the best in the world. This is a good test for Kongo. I hope he wins, but it wont be an easy fight

Yea i do think heath will stand and trade with kongo, couse thats what he does. hes a brawler.

Yea heath has more experience but what happend when he fought any of the top guys? he got beat down. he got owned by fedor, big nog 3x, and crocop who kongo picked apart. Hes never beat a top level fighter in his career..so yeah im thinking kongo will have his way with heath. after that i want to see him fight the winner of silvia vs big nog… he might have problems with big nog but i think kongo vs silvia would be a really good fight.

I agree, this is a stacked card and I’m afraid we’re not going to see Andre, Kos, Fitch, Diego, and or Kongo? I’d like to see all of them. But since they’re running the Pitbull out, we won’t see him. Not sure if they’ll show Tanner/ Okami? Usually they only show 4-5 fights, so I don’t see how they’re going to show all the fan favorites.

Is there another pay per view in mid March?? UFC needs to slow down with these pay per views, and stop looking like WWE, Pay per view per month. Now since they raised the price to $44.95. These fighters would benefit with more UFC FN, for some exposure, and have each pay per view that much more better and special. Pay per views ought to be championship fights, #1 contender matches, and grudge matches. For having fighters due “debuts” I disagree. Look at Spider, they started him on a UFC fight night, whooped Leben, and went on to a championship main event pay per view. Stop hyping each event like the “Fight of the century” and make each card “Stacked” and what the fans really want since we’re paying for it. I’m not getting UFC 81, bc I hate how they hype up "Lumpy) Silvia as the “shit”, when all he does is lumps around.

Anyone agree/ disagree?

The more UFC events the better they have the most fighters and the best fighters in the world so the match ups are endless I love the way they mix in the fight night cards which are now mirror productions to the ppv’s. One ppv per month is perfect.

The fact that they raised thier prices is BS the economy is in a recesion If youre ganna pay an extra $5 then you should get to see an extra fight, Its not like there is any time constraints on ppv’s Dana if you expect me to cough up more money you need to televise another fight. Because if not I will go back to PPV pooling with friends or just get the recaps at MMAMania.com

Tanner turned himself around, but MMA’s not a bodybuilding contest. At least Okami won’t be able to muscle Tanner around like some of his other opponents.

love this card but could do without josh kos & jon fitch fights i don’t care 4 them but i like kos more then jon i was not impressed with his fight against fisher. i think fitch should have end that fight but he let fisher walk out with just a judges loss. u can take a guy 2 the ground u should end the fight or at least keep the fight fun 2 watch. alot of them just want the win i hate fighters like that do all u can 2 win it make them bring an oxygen tank out at the end of the fight. your gets payed enough. thats why i like vitor belfor he puts all he has into the fight and leave nothing behind.

Good test for both, if Evan’s in perfect shape, it should be a Evan win. If Evan is the slightest, and I mean slightest, out of shape, he’s done. Done for Evan means stay out of the UFC. Randy Coutour is a badass, and at the same time , a dream Ken Shamrock should have given up a long time ago.

That’s ridiculous. Why does it matter if a champion is not American? Are they less worthy? I think it’s great that there are so many great fighters around the world.

Pat, I agree. I love the international favor in the UFC. When you look at it from a worldwide point of view, mma is the closest thing to soccer. Basketball has gained internationa; popularity and the NBA is becoming filled with fopreign players. But MMA is really a worldwide sport. It isn’t dominated by any one culture.

Top 3 Heavyweights in the world are all from different countries:
Fedor (Russia)
Noguerra (Brazil)
Couture (USA)

Top 3 Lightheavyweight:
Rampage (USA)
Liddell (USA)
Shogun (Brazil)

Top 3 Middleweights:
Anderson Silva (Brazil)
Dan Henderson (USA)
Matt Lindland (USA)

Welterweights:
GSP (Canada)
Fitch (USA)
Karo (Armenian)

Lightweights:
BJ Penn (USA Hawaii)
Takanori Gomi (Japan)
Gesias “JZ” Calvancante (Brazil)

My point is that the sport and no weight class is dominated by one Nationality and I t hink that it is great.
Counties that love mma:
Japan
USA
Russia
Netherlands (Dutch)
Brazil
Mexico
England
Ireland
Italy
France

Thats just to name a few.

The best thing about mma is the ethnic diversity. Its a beautiful thing. Why would you care if a champion was American?

This card is SOOO bomb. I really hope Tanner comes back and kills Okami, and adds some real spice to the division. I think he’ll do it, Tanner is pretty consistant in is performance.
I also agree that Heath will get killed by Kongo, Heath has been TERRIBLE lately.
Diego fights, and Koscheck fights, good lord, so many.

Kos/Hazelett BETTER be on the card. Sanchez should be on the prelims, with his 2-fight skid and all. While Jake O’Brien has excellent takedowns, his fight shouldn’t be on the card. Kongo/Herring, Koscheck/Hazelett, Okami/Tanner, and Fitch/Wilson should all be on the main card with Silva/Henderson. Arlovski and Sanchez should be on the undercard.

Tanner comes out and makes a statement again at 185. Okami’s “put me to sleep” style isn’t enough for the veteran. TKO stoppage, 2nd round.

Who’s next for Evan?

Michael Bisping, anyone?

I completly agree with you on the tanner okami fight.

But Michael bisbing, yea right. who has bisbing beat? nobody!

who should the winner of okami vs tanner fight?

patrick cote should fight the winner, he has won 3 straight fights over tough guys. nobody else in the division has a two fight winning streak

To be honest i think cote should have fought okami and the winner of that would get a title shot. just my point of veiw.

Does anybody actualy think bisbing is gonna do good at 185?
i think hes gonna get owned by half the division!

I almost wish there was a 15 minute delay on all of the fights besides the title fight in this one. That way if a fight sucks, they could show us one of the exciting undercard fights instead. I hate when you’re watching a boring decision fight take place over a blood stained mat, and your left wondering: who got cracked open in the prelim fights.

If Evan Tanner comes back in good condition and is back to his old self it’s going to be as long night for Okami.

Pretty one sided fight Okami and Tanner, knock down first round and then KO with knee second round. Okami is one of the most best fighters flying under the radar.
