UFC 82: Andrei Arlovski vs. Jake O'Brien

Bring out the blankets:
Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski will return to the Octagon after almost a one-year layoff to fight Jake O'Brien at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" on March 1 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, according to Yahoo!Sports.com.
Here's the snip:
"... popular heavyweight Andrei Arlovski would fight at UFC 82 on March 1 in Columbus, Ohio. He said the opponent isn't certain but is likely to be Jake O'Brien. Arlovski hasn't fought since a lackluster win over Fabricio Werdum in April in Manchester, England."

This should be an interesting fight, I think arlovski is a great fighter, I just wish he would be more consistent. I hope arlovski’s take down defense is good enough to avoid o’brien’s lay and pray.

Jake Ã’`brian is 10-0 and had good showing on a day that Heath Herring had his worse. With a good wrestlting backround. He has an aggressive fighting style. Should upgrade his bjj skills.
I wonder how his back is doing?? That was what pulled him out his last fight. Arlovski should follow in his partner of a dull fight Werdum and bounce back and try to come into the wanting nothing less then a tapout or knock out. Something that gives the judges a coffee brake.
Arlovski is the favorite in this match up. I wonder why he hasn`t inked a new contract yet??
I would like to see AA vs Frank Mir or Brandon Vera.

AA needs an exciting win in this one, but it seems that the ufc is setting him up for another boring fight, putting him against a very lackluster but successful lay and pray fighter in O brian. either there challenging(punishing) him to see if he can have an exciting fight against a lay and pray artist and relatively boring one sided fighter, or tanting his reputation and labeling him as a boring fighter as they send him out of the UFC

It’s about damn time. Im the biggest Arlovski fan there is, but I agree with John. The UFC sucks towards him. I think he should win this fight and go after Fedor.

Evewyone bwing yo banky to snuggle-fest 2008.
God I hope I’m wrong. If we see the Arlovski of old, then we won’t be seeing much of Jake O’Brien.

I hope he fights someone like kongo or vera… If he fights jake I would predict tko win by strikes… arlovski

AA needs to win this fight by ko if he wants to sitck around.
by jsoph on Jan 20, 2008 6:05 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think this fight is a complete waste. It’s obvious that the UFC is washing their hands of Arlovski. Tim Silvia loses to Couture, wins his rebound fight against Vera and immediately gets a title shot, where this is Arlovski third fight since losing to Silvia and he’s fighting someone who’s been out of action for around a year and his only notable win came over a lack luster performance over an injured Heath Herring. Either Andre is asking for a ridiculous contract or the UFC feels that Andre has fallen off and hold no desire to keep him around, which is unfortunate as the HW division is already thin of world class talent.
by Jordan on Jan 20, 2008 7:06 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
If AA wins this fight by KO and hasn’t signed a deal yet, then he has a lot of bargaining power. The UFC HW division is looking a bit lackluster, at the moment.
by R-Dizzle on Jan 20, 2008 7:16 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
AA needs to take Werdums lead and step it up. GG is going to be a tougher opponent then Jake Shields will provide.
I am expecting a KO or TKO from the pitbull, as he is really stepping down a tier in competition.
by Big Zino on Jan 20, 2008 8:58 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think the UFC needs Andrei. The HW division is so boring. No Arlovski means I couldn’t care less about the heavyweight division anymore. How have things gone so horribly wrong when it was looking so good at the start of last summer?

it sucks how it looks like dana white its trying to kick AA by setting him with o’brien. O’brien its one dimensianal and makes everybody he fights look bad even if he loses kinda like okami. how come they don’t kick sherk out he is the most boring fighter in the ufc and they trying to get rid off AA

I’m really excited about that. I hope that Arlovski gets a win, and does come back to the UFC. Arlovski is still a great fighter, and I hope he’ll get the title back. If he signs with the UFC or somewhere else, I will follow.

What a waste of time. AA is so far beyond this joker it’s not even funny. AA needs a couple good wins to get back in the HW title picture where he belongs, but beating the crap out Blankie O’Brien does nothing for him. Hopefully Joe and Dana are just using this fight to get rid of AA’s ring rust before giving him a new contract and worthy opposition.

once again i’ll say this, Andrei is sampson…. he needs the hair

this is a tough fight for AA. jake is such a solid and boring wrestler, he can eek out a decision on this. but im always going to go with AA no matter who he fights. Def. wondering who’s next for Cro Cop. maybe Vera? that would be mint.

why not cro-cop? he hasn’t signed to fight anyone, and that’s the fight everyone wants to see. i’m going along w/ the thinking that the ufc is trying to part ways with a.a. or there trying to bring his contract down. dumb move.

This is stupid. O’Brian in a major step down from Werdum. Even if O’Brian is a bad style match-up for Arlvski he still shouldn’t have to fight him. I would like to se Arlovski fight Brandon Vera

This looks bad. It appears the UFC is attempting to kill two birds with one stone. By offering AA a fight, they are not setting a precedent to allow contracts to expire for no good reason(which will hurt Couture’s legal team). And they are sending AA packing with the most boring fight possible to fans. There’s a good chance this fight will go the distance, and the winner will be whoever can cause more damage (O’Brien from the top or AA from the bottom).
by UFCAddict on Jan 21, 2008 9:51 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Does this mean that Arlovski has a new contract?
Not at all! I think matching Andre up with this c-level opponent
is indicative of Andre not re signing with the UFC. Its just Andre’s last fight on the contract and they dont want to risk Andre beating a top Heavyweight in his last fight on his contract, before walking away from the UFC.
If Andre, was going to stay in the UFC they would have matched him up against a much beter fighter then O’brien

This sucks, why is the UFC hating on AA so bad? Man I hope he goes out to accomplish great things as an in your face to UFC. I like AA he is a good freakin fighter, and I believe we will see the AA of old with a lightning strike of a right hand to end it. AA knows he’s got something to prove now, and he is in no danger of being hit from this guy.

All you are going to be eating your words when O’Brien gets a win against AA. A win is a win, period! Dont make excuses about why Heath Herring lost. He lost! I look for Jake to take AA down and keep the fight to the ground. If he does that he will win the fight. I also think AA can win this fight if he keeps it standing. There is no secret here. Whoever wins, it will be a fight just like any other fight. There are always different finishes to a fight. Maybe this one will make you smile!

Are you kidding? O’brien will take this one…yes, it may be a little boring but it will show everyone once and for all that this kid is going to be around for awhile. Hell he is only 23! If you are tired of the wrestling – then switch to WWE – that is why they call this mixed martial arts – unless I missed something a win is a win! I would love to see O’brien take this one and shut all of you up….

If ur tired of wrestling switch to wwe? I thought that was wrestling?!? I think Arlovski knows hes needs a big win and gets a 1st round KO! I DONT see O’brien taken Arlovski to the ground and out wrestling him for 3 rounds. I think the fight stays up and and we see a big KO!!!

Dana White… You have overcome traditionalists and have created a venue where the young and old wait impatiently to pay for your product. But the same stubborn and bullish attitude that made you successful may altimately distroy the UFC. The UFC, reguardless of what people want to argue, is the premiere MMA venue…The big leagues! The fighters are world class and dispite the controversy over who would beat who in the cage between the numerous leagues, the UFC has proven dominate. Even the great Fedor may not dominate in the UFC as he did in Pride. That being said, Andrei Arlovski is one of MMA’s most exciting and talanted fighters. Regardless of record, AA is capable of beating anyone at anytime. His fighting style is continuously improving and his fights are exciting. Sylvia#3 was a boring fight but AA was clearly injured and I never once read where AA made any excuses. The Werdum fight was also a boring fight but he won it! Werdum is clearly a talanted fighter who may very well be the next champ. AA is young, althletic, intelligent and a class act. He is one of the top heavy weights in the world and you are screwing with him! You have failed to sign Fedor or keep Randy. You are about to lose AA, TiTo and many more. Yes, the UFC is a machine and has phenominal fighters but the young up and commers will not carry this league without having a chance to fight the established fighters for the world to see. Gonzaga and Kongo, for example, would not draw attention to your average consumer if they didn’t fight Cro Cop. You and your investors certainly make a profit and your altheles are clearly under paid. You may have over estimated Cro Cops ability and you may have over paid him, however, I will still pay to watch him on a card. AA is the only fight I will pay for on the upcoming card. AA, Fedor, Randy and others will continue to fight in MMA venues around the world and that is where I will be spending my money. Greed ruined the oldest and the most traditional sport of boxing paving the way for you to make money. Please think about the future of the sport and your legacy.

Nikkos right! and I just saw that Arlovskis fight may not be on TV but lebens fight will?????? For every 1 person that likes leben 80 hate him and dont care to see him run his mouth! and now I gotta watch him instead of the former HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMP!?!?! Thats a joke right??? It better be a joke. some of the best fighters will be fighting that night… half will be the under card? Iam not a huge KOs or sanchez fan but they give us good fights. If I hear “season ones bad boy” then show him piss on someones pillow again… boy am I going be mad. Iam paying to see Andrei Arlovski, Evan Tanner and Anderson Silva and now leben lose.

Poor Arlovski. Or should I say poor O’Brian? Jake is going to get an ass-kicking. He is so outclassed here. He may be an awesome “lay-and-prey” wrestler….but Arlovski is a Sambo champ and excellent wrestler. There is no comparison. Andrei outclasses him standing and on the ground. There are always surprises but still. I really hope Arlovski goes to a different promotion. Where he has a title shot, better cards and better pay.
by Blayne on Feb 10, 2008 11:48 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
More consistant? Andrei has been the most dominating heavyweight champ in a while. Granted Couture would have ended up being the most dominate, but Arlovski finished off people in his defenses, Tim Sylvia just hugs people. Arlovski wins a lackluster fight, yet the guy who loses that fight, is not being talked about as being a contender, he lost to Arlovski dont know how that can be. After he knocks out O Brien, I hope he spits at Dana and walks out the building and sings with M 1. Let him go knock out Fedor and Cro Cop, and then when the UFC comes crying back, spit in his face again, and fight Randy. At his peak which I dont think he is out of yet, Arlovski was arguably the best heavyweight in the world. He has a setback like everyone but Fedor, who isnt human LOL!!, and now his heart and talent is being questioned. Thats stupid!!
