UFC 82: Akihiro Gono possibly out with hand injury against Jon Fitch?

Akihiro Gono has apparently sustained an injury to his hand that requires surgery to repair and will be unable to fight Jon Fitch at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" on March 1 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, according to a translation of Gono's personal blog on this site.
Here's the snip:
"I have a pain in my right hand from November(UFC debut fight) so I could not train enough. I wondered it,Doctor checked my hand again, and this condition was so bad, doctor ordered me to stop fight and all training. And operation is done maybe in January. I am very sorry,my fans and John Fitch..... I will announce operation schedule and come back time."
Fitch and representatives from his American Kickboxing Academy training camp are actually unaware of this latest news.
We'll keep on top of this story to determine if this report is indeed accurate, and if so, what it means for Fitch and Gono down the road.
Stay tuned.

You got to be kidding me!? First Rich Franklin gets injured, now Gono. They better not move Fitch off this card.
Matt Hughes.. where are you? Come back for us.. one more fight. Fight Fitch!!

If Gono truely sustained his injury during his fight at UFC 78, then why is he, and everyone else just finding out now? He should not have even cleared his post fight physical!!!
This really sucks for Fitch, because Karo doesn’t want to fight him to begin with, so why in the world would Karo then take the fight on short notice…
I actually think that if a replacement can’t be found immediately, Fitch should try and DEMAND that he and Karo meet in a #1 contender fight. I don’t know how he can pull off such a demand but still – You don’t become the #1 contender by decisioning Ryo Chonan in his octagon debut.

I think that Karo is looking for some lesser competition. Other than Karo, I don’t know who’s left? Kos is already fighting on the same card. Swick just moved down and he’s already on the UFN card. GSP and Serra can’t fight. Hughes? Alves? (Alves I wouldn’t want to see). Is there somebody else available? ….Nick Diaz? K, not gonna happen. Is there anybody who could possibly move up or down and make a real fight of it?
C’mon MMA guys, lets see some wild speculation. PhilQNY, you’ve got that new gig goin’ on, who the hell can fill in?

If Karo doesn’t step up and take this fight he will be a BITCH full stop… And yes I know he’s already got his “easier” fight lined up…

Karo…Man the F up. I was actually looking forward to Gono/Fitch last night I went through all my PRIDE dvd’s and watched all Gono’s fights and he is tougher then many people give him credit fopr. I am not saying he would beat Fitch but it would have been an entertaining Fight.
Karo needs to really man up…

David Terrell?
Josh Neer?
Chris Lytle?
Lytle is fighting at UFC 81, and I doubt he wants to go back to back loses.
Josh Neer.. ergh where is he?
David Terrell would die making the 170 weight class.
Chris Leben, you said you wanted to drop down to 170… well drop down and fight Fitch.

Fitch vs. a returning Frank Trigg?
Frank Trigg burned his bridges a long time ago when it came to UFC.

I really like the David Terrel option. Get that guy back in there already

Dustin Hazelett could step in. He’ll get stomped on. But it would prob be his biggest fight. Unless Hughes wants to fight, which would be great. If either of those don’t happen, they should just take Fitch off the card.

I don’t think that any of these guys would make a good fight for Fitch. He seems to have moved up a step on all these guys. For Fitch, if he lost against one of these guys, it could be a serious set back.
Karo seems to be the only name that makes sense. BUT, it thins out the 170 a bit b/c who ever loses that fight wouldn’t likely see a title shot for a long while. Gono worked because he was new to the UFC but a proven competitor.

REMATCH DIEGO !!!!!
That fight really angered me. Diego constantly tried to pull off submissions during the entire fight. Fitch was on defense the entire fight. I don’t understand how the judges score these fights. I don’t really care for either fighter, but Diego looked damn good in that fight.

Karo would be the only logical fight at this point. But, as we all know, he probably wouldn’t fight Fitch in attempts to duck in replace of an easier fight. Why do the honourable thing when you could just take the easy road?
by GodDamnMike on Jan 18, 2008 5:05 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Karo will not fight Fitch on 6 weeks notice when he has a slightly easier fight against Alves whe he can be showcased as the next title contender. Karo will not take that risk and I don’t blame him after waiting 3 years for a title shot that got away from him do to a pulled hammy.
Diego is a good choice but the UFC will not risk him having 3 consecutive losses.
How about Marcus Davis after a 5 second KO tomorrow?

Someone mentioned it, what about Hughes? He’s perfect and I think this is even a better fight that with karo, I say if he beats hughes he’s guaranteed a shot at the winner of gsp/serra… oh I mean at shot at gsp. Hughes/fitch I love the sound of that, anyone else want to see that fight?

Karo doesn’t want to risk it? LOL what a gamer, if he really thinks this way he’s a total pu$$y. Beating fitch in my mind would make him the number one contender or beating hughes. No, he wants alves a guy I’m not sure is top 10. To get a title shot he SHOULD be the number one contender, beating the other top guys for the shot, but no he doesn’t want to “risk” it hahahahahhaahahahahahahahahahaha, god what a total Pu$$y.

I forgot matt hughes is on a book tour right now, so I doubt he would be able to fight fitch, too bad, I think it would be a good fight.

Yeah, dude, it’s time to step up. Not only that, but I think Karo vs. Fitch would be a good fight. I really don’t think would let the pace stay slow, like it did in the Karo vs. Chonan fight.

Yeah, but Hughes has been real iffy about whether or not he wants to fight anymore.

The only worthwhile fight for Hughes anymore is a grudge match with Serra, assuming GSP beats him.
by PW on Jan 18, 2008 7:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Nice now Fitch might face a formitable opponent. Hughes would be nice, but I think he only has 1 more fight left and it will probibly be with Matt Serra at one point or another. My dream of seing Fitch out-wrestle his treammate Josh Koscheck would be awesome, but the UFC doesn’t like to pit teammates against eachother. A fight with Karo to determine who is next in line after St. Pierre would be awesome, but rumors of his broken hand might squash that potential match-up. I don’t think he should rematch Diego either. He just fought him. If there will be a rematch it will be down the road. A fight with PRIDE sensation and latest Karo Parisyan victum, Ryo Chonan, may be entertaining. Or perhapts if Marcus Davis has a quick finish in his fight this weekend he could fight fitch in Columbis.

man it looks like karo & fitch are destined to fight in this time, no matter how many odds for them to not fight, there still an instinct that still lead them to face each other.
karo should step up

Karo is the ONLY fight that makes sense here. They have to make this fight happen, come on.
Anyone else that Fitch fights will be considered a step back, and wouldn’t make sense for him career wise.

KARO WONT FIGHT FITCH HE IS A BITCH…WHY WOULD THE UFC GIVE KARO A TITLE SHOT FO BEIN A BITCH THEY SHOULD OFFER HIM THE FIGHT WIT FITCH AND IF HE TURNS IT DOWN HE GETS NO TITLE SHOT….DONT AWARD A GUY FO BEIN A BITCH

by j on Jan 19, 2008 1:50 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
only 2 fights that make sense for fitch are – Matt Hughes and Josh Koschek – he steps up the ladder if he can beat hughes – and he still holds a dominant position if he beat Koschek – before any of you start blabbin on about how they train together n they wont fight each other, so the fuk what! they need to man up n fight each other if they ever wanna be a champ.
fighting diego again is only good for diego – fitch needs to move forward

Frank Trigg will never fight in the UFC again, because Dana has one of his legendary petty beefs against Trigg.

I have also heard that rumor. I wouldnt mind seeing that match up..Roan is tough but Diego should be able to beat him and get his career back on track

Hey John, I agree. I think Diego should be able to get a W here too. I do think Roan is an extremely tough dude but I take Sanchez for the simple fact that I think Fitch broke Roans will in their previous fight. In the second round when Fitch started to get the upper hand it seemed that Roan broke and just gave him the choke. And Diego is all about imposing his will.
That being said the UFC is not doing Diego any favours. An extremely tough opponent again…

I’m not sure what fight you were watching but I was at the fight. Fitch DOMINATED Diego. Laying on your back trying and FAILING submissions doesn’t mean Sh The split decision was joke – Diego didn’t win a single round! Even Diego knew he got beat WATCH THE PRESS CONFERENCE!

Diego probably lost but he didnt get dominated buddy. Laying on someone doing little to no damage and escaping submissions doesnt qualify as dominating. Get a clue buddy

Agreed, if this guys thinks fitch dominated diego he doesn’t know what dominated means. A split decision means it was a very close fight. Gsp dominated koscheck and hughes, Penn dominated stevenson and pulver, thats domination, fitch won that fight by the skin of his balls, but he did win.
