UFC 83: Manchester Evening News (M.E.N.) Arena the likely destination

UFC 70 hauls in $2.6 million at gate; breaks M.E.N. merchandise record

Update: This show will now take place in the Unite States.

UFC 83, which is slated for Saturday, March 8, 2008, will likely take place at the Manchester Evening News (M.E.N.) Arena in Manchester, England, according to the latest print edition of the Wrestling Observer newsletter.

It had been previously rumored that the event could take place in London.

UFC 70: "Nations Collide" on April 21, 2007, was the last time the UFC staged a show in the venue. And it makes sense to return, considering a sellout crowd of 14,921 fans packed the arena for a live gate of about $2.6 million.

In fact, UFC 70 broke every merchandise record, selling more stuff inside the venue than any other event in the 12-year history of the M.E.N. Arena.

That's impressive.

To date, UFC 83 likely features the middleweight debut of hometown hopeful, Michael Bisping, against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 alum, Charles McCarthy. In addition, there's some talk that a fight between light heavyweights Houston Alexander and James Irvin is in the works.

Stick around for more updates.

I know the UFc is trying to reach a global market by how unfair is it to fighters that have to travel and Bisping has only had to leave England for one fight. Why does he always get homefield advantage?

Why so many british cards?? UFC had not been in the tri state for like 7 years before ufc78.(Basura/Garbge/lixo)..and the Brits get the good stuff and alot of it.

by PhilQNY on Jan 15, 2008 3:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m English and I’d really like to see Bisping have regular fights outside the country. Just seems lazy for the UFC to push a lot of the same fighters time and time again in the UK. Marcus Davis for example I love to watch fight but I can’t remember ever seeing him fight outside the UK. I’m sure he has but not that I’ve seen.

If I was a British UFC fighter I’d want to fight in the states, fight in Vegas, travel a bit, not be stuck in this country with all the rain and miss out on all the cool people and places and a bit of that international fight glamour.

Agreed. We need more in the tri state. Too many european cards lately. I like to be able to see it live, but i don’t want to buy the fights at 3 in the afternoon.

I hope they give this free, but it isn’t likely.

Is it me or are we still waiting the hear from the UFC for those announcements that will change the industry? Obviously this isn’t one of them.

by A Lynch on Jan 15, 2008 3:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree, and have been saying it for a while – England gets waaaaay to many events and the East Coast / Tri-State Area get’s Rich Clementi. (In other words, we get “no love”. I know, I know, BAD joke… sorry)

Yo..whad up with Bisping always getting home field advantege…I may go out on a limb here and say Bisping if on this planet ever gets a title shot… it will take place in England.

Im from Manchester and im always happy to see the UFC in England,i traveled to UFC 75 and it was a great event but Bispin robbed Hamill lost all respect with most MMA fans with his comments after the fight. I agree with getrawbc Bispin is being given an easy ride and as MMA isn’t massive over here most random fans don’t realise it. Ill be attending the show but pray we get to see someone a lot better than Michael Bispin.

I have noticed a similar consensus…………

UK cards with most of the same fighters. And they just might giving Bisping wins instead of risking their precious little commodity any harm.

That is what a UK card is to me. Same fighters. Shoving Bispijg up everyones ass. Even after 5 or 6 fights another can for Bisping. McCarthy’s ONLY reason for being here is to give another win to the mediocre Bisping. Other than just getting rid of McCarthy, they offered him a chance to fight(lose) one more time then release him.

So… am I misunderstanding, or is one week after the Hendo/Silva match?

Back to back UFC’s? I’m as big of a fan as anyone, but that seems like alot.

Is the UFC having this card just because there is a Cage Rage event in the UK on the SAME date???? It seem ridiculis to have 2 major events in 6 days….UFC 82 on MARCH 1 and UFC 83 on MARCH 7.

by fightfan on Jan 15, 2008 3:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Sorry 7 days and MARCH 8

by fightfan on Jan 15, 2008 3:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I am VERY curious as to what the main event of this card will be. Has anyone heard any rumors? And PLEASE don’t say Bisping/McCarthy…

by ViolentMike on Jan 15, 2008 4:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm I would be surprised if Dana picks the 8th March for the event, same night as the potentially massive cruiserweight unification clash between Haye and Macranelli and the first fight in the UK for Ken Shamrock down in London at Wembley for cage rage.

Sayin that UFC would probably dominate all, and the boxing is on Setanta not free to air ITV so im guessin the UFC is once again pissin on Cage Rage’s parade.

i was wondering the same. they can’t expect us to pay for for two ppv’s in back to back weeks.someone correct me if im wrong but aint ufc 82 on march 1 then a week later ufc 83 on march 8.

Funny, No one seems to be complaining about the up coming Canadian card with all the Canadians on it. If that’s what Dana and Joe Silva want, they will get. If the card bombs, they might not go back overseas for a while. What i’d really like to see is more PPV’s in the unoffical home of the UFC; Denver, Co.

Canada has yet to host a ufc event so them getting that card put together..is cool. this is like the 3rd event in 6months..I`m assuming.

Did anyone see the ufc 80 countdown?? The part the I find funny was Fabricio Werdum was training in Chute box Curitiba..the part where they showed Fabricio flipping the tire..That tire was p·%&y. It looked like weighed no more than 50lbs..he was flying thru it.

i hope mccarthy beats bisbing to a bloody pulp. probably wont happen though. i just love to see bisbing get beat as much as i like seeing tito get beat.

They will baby Bisping till hell freezes over. GUARANTEE you that Bisping won against Hamill because 2 of the 3 judges were UFC employees.

Easy to imagine….If your boss was spending millions and millions to bring company to the UK and using Bisping as a main part of it. TUF 3 was tailored fro him to win.

There is NO WAY they could have a basic nobody in Matt Hamill win in the TUF 3 winners hometown. Then the whole idea of TUF 3 would of been a sham and Hamill was indeed the best fighter at that time. And all that money promoting TUF 3 winner would of been embarrassing would of been a waste.

Bisping, all he has to do is make it to a decision and I CAN NOT see him losing in the UK!!!! It is sad, but I think it is true

by fightfan on Jan 16, 2008 2:55 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think everyone is forgetting that the UFC is a business and more UK cards a year makes sense due to the exchange rate!!!

I aren’t complaining about more UK events being a Brit that loves most things MMA, this is like answering my wishes!

I do agree though that we should see the well known UK fighters (cough Bisping) fighting in the UK but do want to see him fight in the USA & Canada also!

by Adam C on Jan 16, 2008 3:52 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

im from newcastle and i think you should stop complaining cos we dont get the top fighters like chuck or gsp and i would kill to see my all time hero fitch

I’m from London and agree with all thats been posted.

I’d prefer to see less events in the UK but when they do come have better cards. I went to 70,72 and 75 and the only real big fight was Hendo vs Rampage.

The reason their having a lot over here is because the UK is a gateway to Europe which is potentially a massive market for the UFC.

Coming to the UK is like a halfway house between the US and Europe.

At each event i heard French, Spanish and god knows how many Polish/Russian accents. I could see an event in mainland Europe at some stage this year.

He’s actually had to travel to the US for 3 fights (inc. TUF3 finale). The other 2 were Eric Schaffer (not sure of the spelling) & Rashad. But i do agree it does give him an advantage.

And If you are going to pick one to Pay for, Hmmm Dan Henderson vs. Anderson Silva or Mike Bisping vs. Charles “One last shot before I slip away into mmma obscurity” McCarthy??? 83 better be a free event. The british cards have been made, imho, with lackluster details and with very little effort. Kind of a hodge podge of nobodies and rejects, with a sprinle and glimmer of hope here or there. If they want to compete in the world wide market they should put out a normal UFC product, not a tryout session. I think the fans BRitish, Amercican, and any other culture who is willing to pay for the event, should get an event that is worth paying for.

Nice one for that dood -

im glad they finally put Aleksander Emelianenko in the top 10 – hes come a very long way and is now definitely an elite fighter

- rich franklin at number 4! id be pissed if i was him – he should go for a walk to the WEC and nail Filho – which he probably could do quite dominantly and bring his rep back up.

- its not fair on Nick Diaz either, not even making top 10- he absolutely humiliated Gomi, fair enough he lost to Noons but that was a weird fight anyway

…and i wouldnt put fitch above karo – simply because karo has fought the tougher opponents

That’s because there are tons of talented and exciting Canadian fighters to fill a card with. England has Bisping.

Wonder if Bisping will get another “freebie” from the Brits on the scorecards?

I guess that rematch with Hamill isn’t going to happen with his flee into middleweight.

I have the most problems with their rankings for the LHW divsion. They have Shogun listed as #2. SORRY, but not anymore!!! Dan Henderson should now be listed in the MW division since his next fight is with Anderson Silva. They have Machida ranked #5. I actually think he should be higher. Also, Ricardo Arona should not be in the top 10 in my opinion, and neither should Sokodjou. I would also thing that Wanderlei would be a little higher than 8. Maybe like number 7.

For the WW’s, they have Serra ranked as #2. I thought that it was standard practice to have the champion ranked #1. But oh yeah, this isn’t just for the UFC. So that fact that they have Serra ranked #2 has me flabbergasted!!!

I heard it’s Ross Pointon vs. Josh Haynes for the number 74 contender spot in the WW division.

I agree, i read it as being a bit Pride bias. To have Arona and Sokodjou in the top 10 is just wrong.

He’s boring but what about Rashad Evans? Or even Babalu (won 12 out of last 14)?
