UFC 80 BLOW-BY-BLOW LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY:
DrubySunshine will be the man to lead you through the action. Drubysunshine here for this mid afternoon MMA action in a card that should be entertaining even though its lacking star quality fights. However there is one star in BJ Penn who many could argue is the top pound for pound fighter in MMA when on top of his game, and he will face stiff competition in Joe "Daddy" Stevenson who has top level strength, ground and pound, and ju jitsu skills.

I just printed out the fight card for UFC 80, and I am now on the way to the bathroom where I will proceed to piss on it.

UFC 80..it’s tuff to look this card and think they actually feel this is good card?? Yeah Sure.
BJ..is BJ but this whole card..makes the other organizations look like they’re in the same league as the ufc.
by PhilQNY on Jan 11, 2008 11:56 AM EST reply actions
There are so many top tier fighters in the UFC now that you would think they could start stacking these cards. The price of the PPV’s went up and so should the talent on the cards. UFC 79 was well worth the money and now they give us this crap!
by ChainLink on Jan 11, 2008 11:58 AM EST reply actions
That is a pretty terrible card. I’m actually going, and the Q&A is almost more of a draw than the actual event…
Still, it’s not as bad as 83 is shaping up to be.

ill probably just go to hooters to watch this one for free. April’s card is a must buy for me tho.

I dont think it will be all that bad there is no hype but the ttle fight will be great and gonzaga is always good to watch but other then that the card is a lil weak i mean the marcus davis fight might be ok and im not a fan of lambert. but i will still watch it because i am an mma fan and you never know what might happen it could turn out to be a great night i would hate to miss it cause there was only 2 fights i thought would be good

The problem with this card and the cards from every other event they hold in England is that, no offense ToeLock, they load up with all these Euro fighters, most of whom are not close to the same caliber of fighters as we get on U.S. cards. Bisping is hands down the best Euro fighter on the UFC roster, and how many people have a favorable opinion of him or his skills right now? Or favourable, for our English and Irish posters. :)

its true..its a bit of a crap card – im only wanting to see BJ fight and Gonzaga and werdum fight – i think GG gonna come in too confident as hes the heavier guy this time round – but i think/hope he gets tapped out

The fight card is ok at best, right close to UFC 78. I like the Gouveia match up. Also Marcus Davis and Kendall are fun to watch. The undercard just destroys the entire card.

This card isn’t THAT bad…there’s lil hype about here in the states because it’s taking place in Europe for one…combine that with all the ish with Sherk and the LW title. I’ll prolly catch this one at a bar or something.

SAM STOUT
Why oh Why is He not on the Main Card, he puts fans in the sit’s, he has a hilarious personality, and has a rock hard jaw with bricks on his wrists.
Man if Sam cuts through Eklund
Maybe Stout vs Fisher III
Live in MOntreal
Oh Shit I get tingles

Myself i cant wait til ufc 80, i think Penn will be too much for Stevenson, and I also have Gonzaga for a win. I think this may just seem like less of a card because of the last one. But for me, I have been watching the Sherk case since it started and I am excited to see who wins this fight and will fight Sherk. Especially since the winner and Sherk may fight in Canada, which i will be attending with ringside seats. So this is definetly a build up for that. I for one will definetly be tuning in, as always.

This card isnt that bad i think the lack of hype here is whats bringing it down a notch but still some damn good fighters on this card. The events with less hype usually turn out to be the great fights ya missed cuz it looked like dogsh1t on paper. I know thats happened to alot of people including me so now they watch no matter who’s on the card lol.

this one should be free its bullshit, the penn fight is a big one and thats about it and its at 3:00 with all the talent they have and the price increase every card should be great or if you put one on in england and don’t fill it with great mtach ups give it for free.

Such terrible cards they have in the UK… You know like “Rampage VS Dan Henderson” yeah pretty low profile fight… What a load of crap… That London card was awesome, tons of good fights… Plus I managed to blag my way right to the front of the cage!! :D
by Oskarbravo on Jan 11, 2008 1:04 PM EST reply actions
the card lacks star quality
looks more like a fight night card
it needed at least one more big name fighter on it
even someone like crocop would do
i guess it could be good news for me as theres a chance the tickets will be up for grabs on the cheap on ebay close to the event from touts who got their fingers burnt
it will be a sell out and the building is likely to be full as uk fans arent exactly spoilt fot choice when it comes to mma
this card is better than free tickets to an entire year of cage rage
id still go if i could get ringside for say £100 instead of the £300 it would of been for the rampage henderson card in london… dont think id pay $600 for the good seats tho
would rather save my cash and go to vegas to see an event where gsp or chuck is headlining

Penn and Stevenson do not deserve to be fighting for the title. There are far better lightweight fighters in the division. This card sucks. The title match should be Edger vs. Huerta.

I’m probably going to be skipping this card. I do want to see the Penn v. Stevenson fight, but one fight doesn’t make it worth $40. I like Gonzaga, but the rest of the fights should be a fight night card, not a PPV event.

Translation (from Portuguese to English) by MMA-Europe.net
Interview by “Portal da Luta” (Brazil)
Vitor Belfort is quite comfortable in the new training center, created by Rodrigo Minotauro, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While he was training hard in a big octagon, under the orders of master Amaury Bitetti and Luiz Alves, Belfort was quite happy and confident about his new “home”.
Presently Cage Rage champion, the fighter opened his mouth about his unsatisfaction towards the company. About the chanced of returning to the UFC, Vitor is quite confident
You’re now officially training at Minotauro’s center, right?
Yes, I am training here with the team.
But are you just training? Who are you representing now?
No, I am really on the team and I’ll represent it. I don’t know what the team name is, it’ll be revealed soon.
You are the Cage Rage champion. How’s your relation with the organization?
I’m very upset with Cage Rage. My belt, for instance, I haven’t received it yet. I was told that it was retained on the British border, but I think they didn’t even make it. No one even called me about this.
Do you believe that the UFC will call you?
Things just happen when we really want. It’s on their hands. My will is to return to the UFC and regain my legacy. I think it’ll happen.
But was there any contact?
They asked me if I was ready to fight in April, I’m just waiting for Dana.
What about Lyoto, your former partner at Black House? He’s doing well in the UFC. Do you think he can get the belt?
He has all the chances to get. He’s fighting very well.

UFC 80 Results:
Penn via submission (rear naked choke) round 2
Gonzaga via TKO (Strikes) round 2
Grove via TKO (strikes) round 1
Davis via decision but an entertaining decision
Gouveia via submission (arm bar from the guard) round 3…This will be an entertaining fight, possibly fight of the night!

If I was the UFC, I would give Vitor 1 last shot at returning to the fighter he once was. I would sign him to no more then a 2 fight contract, in which he would have to prove to be the Nasty Vitor, not the Boring Vitor in order to get a contract extension. After all, Vitor Belfort is a future UFC Hall of Fame inductee and is no where near being to old to compete. I would give him the 2 fight contract and throw him in there against some beasts. Let him warm up against Soukodjou (who will look much better next time when the Octagon jitters are gone) and if Vitor can beat Sokoudjoou, I would throw him in there against wanderlei, who I am sure is itching to avenge probably the worst loss of his career. Win or Loose those 2 fights, I would only extend his contract if he is exciting in those performances because the biggest Vitor fans would have to admit that he hasn’t been an exciting fighter in a long time. I think the biggest obstacle for Vitor is he needs to conquer his mental deamons. If his head is in the right place, I think he has a legit shot at returning to his Scary self. Camp Noguerra is as great a place as any to get him in Physical and more importantly MENTAL shape to try and make a succesful, but more important EXCITING return to the Octagon.

It’s an OK card, I think it’s because is in Europe that the hype is so low, just like UFC 72. Also UFC 79 was such a great card that UFC 80 can’t keep up with it.
Can’t wait for UFC 82!!!!!!!!!

The card is boring. I hope we get it free in the US. It also pisses me off the prices are going up. The cards better get a helluva lot better if I’m going to pay $45-$50. Give us a break Dana.

gsp reminds me so much of belfort, they where both unstopable and then boom!!! biggest upsets in UFC history (Couture beating Vitor & Serra beating GSP). looks like GSP is refocused and looking better than ever, hopefully Vitor can return and get his confidence back he could easily beat on anybody in the LHW division he could rematch Ortiz, Silva, Liddell, then fight all the new bees.

I think I’m with ya guys on the Hooters team. I’m not paying for this PPV buy at home with this card being so weak. When is CRO COP gonna get in the cage again and lose?
I’ll be pulling back on some Budweiser pitchers staring at my local hooters girls. it sucks now at hooters because a lot of them wear the “pussy pouch” to hold things like pens, lip gloss, tampons, and the pad to write down how many chicken wings you want. It blocks the shot of the camel toe and when everything is said and done…that’s the only reason pervs like myself go there.
cheers!!

Phil….i know you post a lot…and no disrespect, but Vitor?…be realistic…he has a great hilight reel…(my bad on the spelling)..however….he is easily beatable….frustrate him…get over his surges…take him down…hit him back…he is dreadful when problems come his way..i agree I would want to see those fights you have listed…but I don’t know if Vitor could get past Soukodjou…his first fight was a fluke…not unlike a lot of first timers in the UFC….hope you respond to this…I hope Vitor comes back and fights Rashad? Forrest? Jardine? Why not Sean Salmon…add to his fast handed K.O.’s…
oh and p.s. saying Vitor could fight chuck is funny…………..hope that is on spike so i don’t get charged!
Good God comparing him to GSP is silly…for starters…they fight completely different…GSP relies on kickboxing followed by a ton of skills(ground, clinch, judo, mma in general)…Vitor is based on quick hands and good stand up…above average ground…and unless i missed something..average judo. If thats true why in the #### do we have to pay 40 bucks to see this bullshit? I mean what is going on with all the fighters we havent been seeing. Is everything all about mother fing money these days. I mean who in their right mind wants to see Forrest Griffin get pounded by Rampage? What a joke. I have an idea what that betting line is going to be Rampage -3000 Griffin 1000 and we have to wait months to see it. Excuse me while I go shove a pencil in my eye

If anything this elevates Arlovski after he simply manhandled Werdum. Werdum couldn’t do jack against him. I hate how people only look at now and forget everything that happened 5 minutes ago. Once Arlovski dominates in his next fight he should get winner of Kongo vs. Sylvia/Noguiera. Look for a Kongo v. Arlovski heavyweight title match in May.

Im still here. I really thought Joe was going to push the pace and gas BJ and finish him off. So what, Joe lost. I thought Joe in the 1st round held his own against BJ and his BJJ. I thought Joe did a great job untill he got cut, and when I think he got cut, he got into a panic and rushed his decisions. BJ Penn looked great, but I must say. Sean Sherk will tear BJ a new butthole. Period.
Congrats to Rivera, Werdum and Gouevia for pulling off upsets tonight.

What a wicked card of fights, on paper this card didn’t look too hot but it delivered with ko after ko. Very exciting.. my only shock was gonzaga.. got caught with a huge knee and never really came back after that. Had some mean leg kicks in the 1st tho. Don’t know why kendall didn’t have his hands up defending himself or anything? he just ate punch after punch. Great night all in all..

BJ Penn looked great, but I must say. Sean Sherk will tear BJ a new butthole. Period.
BJ looked like a champ. He dominated the 3rd best LW in the division. Joe got dropped, was getting picked apart on the feet, and was being controlled on the ground before he even got cut. He was in survival mode the whole fight. And he didn’t panic, he had a sense of urgency because the fight might have been stopped by the doctor. BJ’s attitude and body language was that of a confident champion, not unlike Hughes when he was dominating the WW division, or like GSP in his last 2 fights with Hughes. Sherk is gonna be in a world of hurt.

Stevenson got schooled in the 1st round. It could have easily been 10-8. He got dropped right off the bat and BJ took his time, didn’t rush it. He looked flustered as soon as Penn rushed him seconds in. It looked like he was going to cry about a minute into it. I did feel sorry for him. Against a lean and mean BJ Penn he is simply out of his depth.
80 turned out to be better than expected. KOs galore.

Penn and Stevenson do not deserve to be fighting for the title. There are far better lightweight fighters in the division. This card sucks. The title match should be Edger vs. Huerta.
You’re an idiot. Penn showed everyone tonight he’s on another level and why he’s one of the greatest to ever step foot in the Octagon. Just as Rampage put it, “he’s the greatest of all time” (WHEN HE’S FOCUSED).

Like BJ said in the prefight interview and I think it will hold true for Sherk and anyone else who has to fight Penn in the next year or so…“It is a bad time to fight BJ Penn”…
Sherk will do nothing to BJ, it is going to be how make MMA look easy clinic #2. Like I keep saying over and over that no Sherk fan will respond to…Without any real cardio training he Beat Hughes Once, Lost the second through injury, Lost a split Decision to GSP , then took Machida giving maybe 40 to 50# to a very good decision at 205. What can Sherk bring that BJ has not already fought well against? Nothing This BJ Penn will own the 150# for a while, as long as he stays this way…

Fabricio Werdum proved to us what he had never doubted in myself, if he beat him before, he can beat better Gonzaga again. Super Win for him..and he made up for the AA fight.
Gonzaga is a beast..I will always as be up to watching him fight..( nasty leg kicks )

I am glad to hear that this was a good event. It looked crappy on paper. I think they need to cut down the number of pay per views and put more of this on Spike. Then save they pay per views for the cards that are more interesting. I must admit I bought into the hype of Gonzaga after the Cro Cop fight, but now I’m not so sure. Hopefully that division picks up some quality fighters, with Randy gone it doesn’t seem as interesting. Penn if he keeps focused should be able to put a strangle hold on that division. BJ kicks ass.

Hell yeah man, not that Joe is a huge name, but Penn dominated in a just as expected fashion. He is so freakin good, sometimes I get the idea he really doesnt wanna finish it right away, he makes a point not to rush it, like when he dropped Joe, he threw a couple bombs, then just kinda layed on him with minor GnP as he passed to the numerous positions he wanted, including mount on and off like 5 times.
by The Anomaly on Jan 20, 2008 12:04 AM EST reply actions
Is it just me or does Penn have an thing for uppercuts? He is realy good at it to, the way he kinda puts his head sideways and orients himself so its like he is just throwing a hook, GSP nose can vouch for that, he timed Pulver with it the whole fight, and Stevenson new what was up in the first 2 seconds.

It made me feel better to see Penn given him props backstage when they were talking, Joe is gonna do really good in his career, just the wrong place at teh wrong time.
by The Anomaly on Jan 20, 2008 12:11 AM EST reply actions
I just watched the post fight interview with Penn and Joe, and those two have so much respect for each other. Penn said that he saw Joe’s wife crying in the crowd when doctors were trying to close Joe’s cut and he felt bad but had to put the fight away. This fight proved many things. First of all, as long as BJ Penn is the champion we will not have large gaps between title defenses. Secondly for everyone who thinks Penn is cocky, he totally proved that he’s not. Joe again proved himself to be a well respected and powerful well-rounded fighter in the Lightweight division, but as long as Penn is there, he won’t be champion. Lastly, I’m stoked that Sherk isn’t the Champion. Two title fights in two years is ridiculous and unacceptable. Even if Sherk didn’t knowingly dope, he should have manned-up and acknowledged Bj Penn as the true champion. But until their title fight, I’m ready to take on all of the BJ Penn haters.

Cote hit him from an awkward postion yet still put him down. He needs to work on his head movement or else it could be a short career.

Joe is a great fighter. I just think it was too early in his career to be taking on Penn. If Sherk comes in ‘roid-free this time, Penn will smoke him like a Cuban cigar in Havana. I have no doubt of this. He’s just too skilled and too focused for Sherk. As for Grove, it was just a matter of time before he got owned the way he did. He’s obviously fighting in the wrong weight class. Way, too light. And from everything I’ve read, it kills him to cut down to 185. Which makes you phyically weak. Maybe he’s just afraid of the light-heavyweights. I don’t know. But he could easily carry 205 at 6’6’, and still be in shape.

Great simile GhOsT..Priceless

Penn is tough for sure, but I still have the feeling his next fight with sherk is going to be a lot tougher than most seem to realize. Just a hunch, might be totally wrong like how I thought hughes would put up a good fight against st.pierre, and got totally humiliated, it was hard to watch because I’m a hughes fan. Penn has all the skills and ability to hold the light weight title as long as he wants if he stays focused and hungry. Even though I think penn is pound for pound the most skilled fighter in the world, skill isn’t everything like he said himself and sometimes just being a little off in the conditioning department might turn into a loss. He’ll need to be 100% focused and in top shape for sherk because if he isn’t he’ll probably lose, via decision.

LOL…. mmaopinion.com needs to find work in some other field, penn slaughtered stevenson in heart wrenching fashion. The fight was very hard for me to watch with the blood and stevenson crying after the fight, brutal. It was like someone beating up a kid, almost didn’t seem like a fair fight.

Good Post Pun..I think the preview for Penn vs Sherk will be pretty intresting.
BJ Penn: Sherk ya dead.

I just watched this fight over for about the 7th time, and one question that occurred to me was, what exactly was Joe’s game plan for this fight?
It looked as if he felt his best chance against him was on the feet because he did not shoot once the entire fight, and he tried to avoid any sort of clinch. If this was the plan, it was a big mistake because Joe is definitely not the best striker while BJ can outbox many great strikers in this game (GSP comes to mind, a guy that’s got reach on BJ). Plus if he paid attention to some of his training clips leading up to this fight, he’d know BJ has been working a lot on his boxing.
I think, although still dangerous, Joe should have tried to set up for the takedown and try to ground and pound his way to a decision. Especially in the 2nd round with all the blood coming out of his forehead, he should have tried to get on top so the blood would stay out of his eyes and perhaps even get it in BJ’s eyes and try to make something happen from there. If he was successful with a takedown, he would have at least been able to frustrate and tire BJ out some. In other words he should have tried to fight like Sean Sherk..
But you know what, maybe that WAS the game plan who knows.. BJ really took it to him on the feet and it may have screwed up the direction the fight was going for Joe. The fight obviously ended on the ground in both rounds, but they were both from Joe buckling from taking headshots.

i live in the UK an cant get this fight
im pissed
I’m gutted too, I never got to see the live event either.
In the UK here, we have a terrible channel called Setanta Sports who are going to ruin UFC in the UK.
They have a PPV channel which they used to broadcast a couple of events. Then they changed it to there regular channel which you have to subscribe to. It costs £10 ($20)per month which is a con. They only show UFC events periodically. Therefore, you have to pay for 3 or 4 months subscription to see one event i.e. $60 – $80. The rest of the sports broadcast on this channel are not worth watching.
I subscribed to them just to see UFC 75 back in September. As they said there was no annual contract i thought i would have one months subscription i.e. £10.00. They didn’t tell you that there was a hidden £20.00 connection charge. They also didn’t say that they had made it near impossible to cancel your subscription. UFC 75 ended up costing me £50 ($100). If I had kept the subscription going, I’d be paying £10 / month to watch UFC with UFC 75 being the last one they televised before last nights UFC 80. That is 4 months between showings.
UFC- DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!
I’m such a big Penn fan and so disappointed I missed him winning in emphatic fashion and all the other TKOs.

What other LW would give GSP and Hughes the fight that BJ did? Do you really think Edgar or Huerta could even hang with GSP for a round? Give me a break.
Tough loss for Joe, but he’ll bounce back. I’d like to see him vs. Huerta later in the year when Huerta makes his return.

I honestly think Penn is not going to slip anytime soon. I personally feel that the time and effort put in for Stevenson was just a presursor for Sherk. I think Penn used this time as a warm up for the new Penn and when he steps into the ring with Sherk in the Spring or early summer it won’t be on 3 months of conditioning but 6 to 8 months of conditioning. I do not think Sherk will even be able to prepare for this level of MMA he is going to experience. I kinda wish Penn would keep his mouth quite about the fight for the next few months and give Sherk no motivation. Penn is already under Sherks skin and in his head. That was obvious by the way Sherk was pacing after the exchange of wordws in the ring. Sherk may not respect BJ at all now but he sounded like a roided idiot with his comments and will have the respect beaten into him by Penn. I think the greatest thing was that while Sherk was was ringside Mike Goldberg kept forcing him to talk good about Penn, almost as if he had no idea that there was a war of words going on between Sherk and Penn. H=Goldberg just kept asking over and over about all of Penn’s good attributes and Sherk just went on and on about how much Penn brings to the ring, with the exception of conditioning. Sherk believes Penn’s Achilies Heel is conditiong and that he will exploit him that way. If Penn comes in the way he did yesterday, there will be no way for Sherk to even test Penn in the Deep Waters. Sherk is going to have to fight for his life to get past the first 3 and should he survive the Penn CLinic, then maybe he can loose by decision….

And yes, BJ is a crazy ass mofo. That’s a guy who’s scared to fight Sherk? Yeah right. Sherk dominates when he has the intimidation factor, just like Hughes intimidated WW’s before GSP figured it out and beat him in their 2nd match. Sherk will NOT intimidate BJ. Sherk is gonna get stopped by BJ.

Getting hit with knees in the forehead are one thing that is the strongest part of your body. People need to realize it it is not what landed but where it landed. A lnee to the face may hurt and blow your nose open but a lazy left behind the ear will drop the biggest opponents. So Sherk will get owned in stand up. Regarding Penn’s LW opponents – Sherk is by far the most accomplished, and best one in the division. When Penn beats him, I don’t see how anybody can make the argument for anybody else, like Huerta, Guida, Griffin. When he beats Sherk, I consider the division cleaned out. The only fighters that I could see even making a fight out of it would be Florian or Edgar, and they would still get dominated pretty hard.
