UFC Quick Quote: The MMA evolution of Marcus Davis

Marcus Davis UFC

"I knew if I could learn how to fight on the ground, I could make something of myself in this sport..... Pretty much every fight I've had recently, when the fight is over, people will come up to me and say, 'You did something in that fight that I didn't think you could do. And you know what? They're right. I add something for every fight. The Marcus Davis you'll see in Newcastle is nothing like the Marcus Davis you saw against Paul Taylor."

-- Former boxer turned mixed martial artist, Marcus Davis, talks with Yahoo!Sports.com about his time consuming transition from boxing to MMA in this snip mash. "The Irish Hand Grenade" is perhaps the most improved fighter to emerge from any season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). He is set to fight Jess Liaudin at UFC 80: "Rapid Fire" on January 19. With a win the underrated talent will more than likely elevate his status in a stacked division to start of the New Year.

I enjoy watching Davis fight. The UFC needs to start giving him some better opponents.

U r right. Marcus improves evertime and he is a game fighter. He fought through that nast kick that landed on his jaw last time in England….he is a real tough dude. He is probably one of the biggest surprises to come out of the TUF 2 season…..I am a Fan!

soo true!
He was rocked big time. I was thinking it might be over, and then he showed how tuff he really is and came back hard..
Reminded me of how rocked Nog was from that headkick from Heath, and then Nog showed his heart, skill, and determination and came back to win..

The Irish hand gernade is one tuff mofo, and I too am a fan.

This guy is one of those fighters I always look forward to watching. His transformation has been incredible to watch so far, and it only seems to be continuing. I can’t wait to see how he surprises me next. Maybe Andy Wang should take a few pages from this guy’s book! :)

This was the most improved fighter in 2007..hands down. It’s time to feed him to the sharks of the division.

I would agree with that statement.

I love watching this guy fight. I’d really like to see him against some bigger names, though. I doubt he’s ready for a Jon Fitch or anything, but even Chris Lytle might not be a bad opponent.

Marcus was SUCH a 1-dimensional underdog on TUF 2. Since then he as become very well rounded, and in a short period of time. I would consider this guy to be a ‘spongue’. More so than KOS, unless people are saying that his hair looks like a spongue.

Just yesterday I was talking about good next opponents for Davis after he presumably beats The Joker. The 2 best options in my opinion = Thiago Alvez or Diego Sanchez.

I would agree with that statement.

I would have to disagree..But he would definetly be 2nd most improved fighter of 2007’

I think if there is a “most improved” fighter of 07’ it would have to be Forrest Griffin.
Unlike most I dont blame Shogun for losing(aside from he might of under estimated Forrest),,I dont think Rua is a bad fighter(he is one of the best)..
I think Shogun lost because Forrest has improved that much. He has reached a new level and beat one of the best 205er’s(imo)
Shogun’s only mistake was thinking he was fighting the guy he watched on fight tapes..But he wasn’t. He was fighting the “new improved” Forrest.
Any true MMa fan knows that Shogun is not a fighter to sneeze at, and Forrest came in and and dominated (imo) one of the best 205er’s, and especially after a “lack luster” performence agianst Hector Ramerez. The improvement inbetween those two fights is tremendis, and that is why he deserves “Most Improved” fighter of 07’..

out of the two I would like to see him fight dirty Sanchez.
But Thiago would make for a good fight aswell..
I dont like Diego and would love to see him get KO’d(especially by Davis.)
Sanchez thinks he can’t get KO’d, but I think Davis could do it..But Diego is very skilled and could take the fight in another direction…who know’s..

would be a very entertaining fight..

I’m so pissed off I can’t go. Saw Marcus in Belfast at 72 and in London at 75. The guy’s a hero. You can’t not like him.

Marcus is top 10 now in my opinion. A friend of mine said that he’ll always be one of those likeable competitive guys who never holds a title. Probably true but there’s always a chance especially with the power and skill of his boxing. If Serra can KO GSP it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that Marcus could do the same. He’s always going to be a dangerous opponent for anyone in the division.

You are right, Davis has come into his own for sure – by leaps and bounds. I totally agree with either of your next opponents. Either fight would make for a doozy. Cheers.
