Former middleweight contender Mike Swick talks about his move to the welterweight division and his upcoming fight with Josh Burkman during the main event at UFC Fight Night 12 on January 23 from The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It should be a solid scrap.

Mike Swick is a solid fighter. He should do well at Welterweight. Also, it’s not like he is cutting that much weight to make Welterweight. I believe he walks around 180. If Swick gets by Burkman; a fight between Swick and Parisyan would be awesome!

i think swick takes this one and burkman goes to the wec. swick is right about him having an advantage w/ the better training camp. question is though, how long can those 3 guys(fitch, kos, swick} go without fighting each other while they are all in the top ten, and how long will the ufc let them go without fighting each other?

Swick seems like a pretty good guy.
He has a good attitude, and he is a good/entertaining fighter.
He did alright at MW. Hope he brings the same excitement to the WW division..

Yeah, I would like to see that fight but Karo is a pussy that wants to wait to fight the winner of GSP/Serra..
Karo doesn’t want to risk his “title-shot”…
As far as I’m concerned, Karo should be fighting Fitch for #1 contender, but Karo has other plans..
nonetheless’ Karo/Swick would make for a good fight.

Good question! It was already starting to be an issue with Kos & Fitch – now you throw Swick into the mix. I know those guys don’t want to tear their gym apart for a single fight, but with 3 guys potentially in the top 10 it could get interesting.

also, what if one of these guys becomes champ. are the other 2 just gonna sit around and wait. i know it is very important to have good training partners and a good camp, but these guys are professionals.

Also JAKE SHIELDS! Did Jake Shields officially leave Cesar Gracie’s school in Pleasant Hills California, near Stockton? Or is he just training over at AKA for a little while. Not only has he been training partners with Nick Diaz for LONG time, they have also been great friends.
If anyone knows more on this, I’d really appreciate it.

I have to agree with on Karo’s wanting to be ahead of Fitch for the title shot. Karo and Fitch should be fighting for the number 1 contender spot. In Canada when Serra fights GsP..IMO. Karo said he’ll either wait or fight a " tomato can " not to risk losing his spot on line. I feel if you say I’m the number 1 guy..why wouldn’t put it on the line time in and time out..and not ask for a BS fight..Karo is really a skilled fighter..with more skill in talking ish " Doesn’t he know who I am..doesn’t he know what I can do to him " …
Now for Swick..I’m a fan of his and lest see what happens with him in the welter weight division. He hade a good win streak at 185..granted 185 isn’t the 170..but we all know what he can do and what type of fighter he is..Burkman style wise presents a problem for Swick..very strong exposive wrestler..good GnP…very athltic..young..both coming off loses..will be gunnung to hurt one another in a entertaining fashion..the plus for Swick is..his traing partners..Kos and Fitch..who can be a Burkman in practice for Swick.

That camp ATT has alot of top ten welterweights.
-Jon Fitch
-Josh Koschek
-Mike Swick
-Jake Shields(Elite)
All these guys would end up clashing down in the future. I still think Fitch is the best out of all of ’em.

PhilQNY. Burkman is coming over a unaimous decison victory over forrest petz. But this fight will definitly be an exciting fight for sure. Swick takes it on the feet for sure. Is it just me or does it seem like KOS and Swick just spar constanly. Does anyone know if they do other training at all??? I have seen the same training for KOS when he fought gsp

I dont know if this is the right move for Swicks career. Besides Hendo and Silva the Middleweight division is crap, we all know this. Swick could have had a much easier road to a title shot at MW then he will at WW. Also his move to welterweight isn’t helping the UFC at all since they are in desperate need of talented 185 lb fighters. At WW the problem of the AKA boys not wanting to fight each other gets worse. It may have been smarter for Swick to just try and put on some muscle and stay at 185 lbs.
Maybe walk around at like 200 lbs and cut down I would have liked to see a match up between Bisping/Swick at 185 lbs.
As for the AKA boys and there unwillingness to fight each other, well something is gonna have to give sooner or later. Someone may have to leave AKA and start training elsewhere. I think the man to go should be Fitch. He is the best one out of the 3 and has the most realistic chance of being welterweight champion one day. If he ever became champion, I bet the other 2 will throw that loyalty right out of the window and come gunning for Fitch, so he may as well leave before the situation gets messy.
I also feel that fighters shouldn’t stay in one camp too long. Nothing against AKA, but I feel after a certain point an upcomming fighter should jump around from camp to camp, learn new things, work with different guys, and experience different types of training. Forrest Griffin is a prime example of this. Eventually Fitch, should just leave AKA and join another camp, maybe Extreme Couture.
Thats just my oppinion.

Rashad and Jardine are BFF too, and have said they would never fight each other, even for the title. Not that that situation is likely to arise with them, but still.

I like Burkman. I think with Burkman training with Evan Tanner Burkman will beat up on Swick. Yeah Swick is good but as soon as he gets hit he looks timid. I predict that Swick will come out strong but as soon as Burkman clips him with anything you will see Swick’s style change almost immediately. And yeah Burkman can gas out a little bit but I see him being the best Burkman we’ve ever seen.

Some good points there John. However Swick would never reach the summit at 185 because of his size in my opinion. Silva, Hendo, Franklin, Okami will always beat him because of this. Maybe even Herman, J-mac and dare I say it Bisping (Wandy perhaps if he drops to MW). He’s a lot smaller than these guys. I’m sure he could outstrike a few of them mind.
At 170 he could be very very good. Problem is, as you’ve wisely pointed out, WW is stacked and he is behind his fellow AKA team members, Fitch and Koscheck in the pecking order.
So it really is a tough one. Maybe he can get some bigger fights at 170 as there is more really top quality fighters in this division. Maybe by moving to 170 he’s just trying to be the best fighter he can be. He might be even quicker!!!
I believe if his conditioning is good then he could upset a few people in the division. Too bad for him that there’s so many top AKA guys at WW at the moment.

it’s gonna be interesting to see how the swick/fitch/kos axis of ATT gets down in the future. these guys can’t expect to keep their camp together when they are all top players in the division. i’m pretty psyched to see swick at 170. i think he’ll do very well.
