UFC 84: Rich Franklin vs. Travis Lutter fight in the works

Rich Franklin Travis lutter ufc 84
The middleweight clash between Rich Franklin and Travis Lutter has been rescheduled for the Bell Centre at UFC 84 in Montreal, Canada, on April 19, according to FightNetwork.com.

"Ace" and "The Serial Killer" were supposed to go at it at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" on March 1. However, Franklin had to undergo knee surgery to repair an injured MCL in his knee.

Both fighters are coming off of losses in their most recent bouts against UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.

"The Spider" submitted Lutter at UFC 67: "All or Nothing" back in February 2007 -- it was his only fight that year. That's because Lutter has been on the shelf recovering from a chronic neck injury.

Franklin lost the rematch to Silva at UFC 77: "Hostile Territory" via second round technical knockout in a fight that wasn't really close. In addition to the knee injury, there are also reports that his father just passed away prematurely this week from an unexpected heart attack.

Hopefully the remainder of 2008 for Franklin gets much better.

UFC 84 is the first-ever event for the promotion north of the U.S. border and is expected to feature the welterweight championship bout between 170-pound titleholder, Matt Serra, and interim belt winner, Georges St. Pierre.

In addition, Canadian fighters such as Patrick Cote, Jeff Joslin, Jason MacDonald and Sam Stout are expected to compete on the card.

Hey Mania, You may have made an error. U posted that Franklin might fight Lutter at UFC 84 in Canada on April 19th. I think he ment UFC 83 because 82 is scheduled for march 1st, and there isnt any other even scheduled between March 1st and April 19th…..is it a mistake or is there a whole other event I dont know about?

In the weakest overall weight divison in the ufc..this is good fight to see. I just hope it isn’t a main event and/or just one out two fights that we want to see on a fight card.

This is a good solid match up. I hope it happens because in the weak middleweight division this fight would have to be considered one of the better possible match ups that could take place in the division.
Just proof on how weak the 185 lb division is. Y is it so hard to find good 185 lb fighters. ^’1, 185 lbs is a pretty common size yet there are such few good fighters at that weight.

I agree 100%

This should make for a real good fight..but it BETTER NOT be a main event fight…IMO UFC 72- Franklin/Okami should not have been a Main event.

Theres a show rumored for March 8 in England with Bisping. No idea if that’s happening and/or if it will be a PPV card. Ill stick with 83 for now.

With all the competition at 205 and 170 I am surprised more people do not step up or drop down in weight to try and compete at this weight class…It would make sense. I do not think anyone from 170 except maybe GSP could take the belt from The Spider or Hendo if he should win.

Franklin should own Lutter. Can’t wait to see GSP regain his gold. My condolences go out to Rich and his family.

Oh really? I havent heard anything about it but if thats true, it looks like the UFC is gonna pick up again come March…..UFC 82, UFC 83 then UFC 84 then UFN, and then The UFC Canada show. March and April are starting to remind me of this past August and September which was a great time in the UFC…We just have to wheather these next 2 boring months, but then it looks promising!

So the UFC is planning on Bisping making his MW debut in England….I wonder who they will match him up with? Most middleweights are signed to fight around that time. If Bisping is gonna headline the event, they will have to find him a decent opponent, if he isnt the main event, I guarente the UFC will give him a scrub. Bisping is one of the luckiest fighters in the UFC, because the UFC will do anything to protect him and turn him into a star, if not here, in England….He is soooooo lucky!

Chuck Liddell: “I’ll think about it.” —Chuck after being offered a fight w/ Machida)
I regularly talk with a karate student who has been going to the Machida family’s APAM academy in Brazil for 7 years, and he’s very close to the Machida family. Usually after Lyoto comes back to a Brazil from a fight, he visits Lyoto. Well, He talked to Lyoto tonight and sent me this message of what he heard from Lyoto: (below) (his english is a little rough cause he lives in Brazil)

I talked to Lyoto tonight.. I asked if that is true, about he fighting chuck lidell in april. He said that he was asked about that, and he accepted.. in front of Chuck! But chuck said that he would think about… So, Lyoto told me that his next fight can be with Lidell, Toto Ortiz or Jardine.

I see this being a one sided fight in the favor of Franklin. I am surprised that Lutter still wants to even fight. Not making weight for your first ever title shot is a pretty good indicator that you are no longer passionate about the sport.

So the UFC is planning on Bisping making his MW debut in England….I wonder who they will match him up with? Most middleweights are signed to fight around that time. Bisping better not be in another main event until he is fighting for a title, which would mean – never.

Mania, u were right the UFC is scheduled to be in London on March 8th….and I totally forgot that Bisping was scheduled to fight Charles McCarthy, I can imagine that the UFC will have sunk so low to offer this as a main event….I doubt it…..if it is the UFC has reached an all time low.

I will never forget that Flying knee that “the crow” destroyed charles McCarthy with. It was one of the greatest finishes to a UFC fight!

The MW division is weak enough as it is…they’re not going to drop a solid fighter like Lutter. I agree that it was ridiculous he didn’t make weight for the fight but that doesn’t make him a bad fighter. He made a mistake and hopefully he’s learned from it and will be refocussed for this big fight. I think Rich will take this one but Lutter has some slick ground skills. I can’t wait to see this fight live in Montreal in April.

Now if Bisping vs Charles McCarthy is the main event, I will SERIOUSLY never order a PPV again, and that would break a streak of 5 – 6 years. I only didn’t watch the UFC for a few years some time after UFC 12 or so.

To sort out all of the confusion,

UFC 82 = March 1st in Columbus Ohio live on PPV
UFC 83 = March 8th in London England (probably on TV)
UFN= April 2nd KenFlo vs. J-Lau in Colorado (Free TV)
UFC 84 = April 19th in Montreal Quebec Canada (live on PPV)

We dont all love Bisping in the UK, he is a decent fighter and has destroyed all the guys in the UK that he has been up against. Moving his career forward to America has helped him & MMA gain popularity in the UK & I agree he has had some easy fights & should have won against Hamill. The Evans fight was also weak (I blame Evans for that as with the Ortiz-Evans fight), the big difference with most UK fighters is that wrestling isn’t a high school sport over here & thats where UK fighters loose fights on not been able to wrestle like Hughes or Couture or even Evans (NOT SAYING BISPING IS ANYWHERE NEAR HUGHES OR COUTURE)

The confusion is with the 3/8 event. No one is sure yet if it will be a PPV. It’s a little odd to have two PPVs on back-to-back weekends. Unless it is FREE on Spike. It could also be a dubbed fight night special.

.

Then Silva will destroy Franklinstein again lol (It was around hallowe’en and his nose was a mess, bad joke I know).

I see what you mean though. Rich’s only chance of regaining the belt is if Dan beats Anderson. Hendo seems to be pretty confident with his clinch game but he’s not as rangy as Anderson so supposing that Dan were to beat Anderson, could he employ the clinch against Franklin as well as the Spider did? I wonder.

If Anderson (think Silva is the fav) beats Dan I wouldn’t mind seeing Dan and Rich duking it out. It mightn’t make sense for the rankings and next contender if they want to build both guys back up for another crack but it would definitely confirm who’s the number 2 MW. It would be weird if Dan lost to Anderson, won against Rich and got another shot though wouldn’t it.

This should be a good fight, but I do agree with everyone else that it should not be a main event. I don’t think Franklin is a lock to win however. Lutter is a very capable wrestler and if he can continually take Rich Franklin down he may edge out a decision. It’s either Franklin by KO or Lutter by Unanimous decision.

by DB on Jan 10, 2008 6:21 PM EST reply actions

There must be a typo on this page because when i read it said that Rich Franklin was fighting in Montreal. I thought Rich only fought in Ohio. Why is Dana making him fight somewhere other than his hometown? He won’t have the advantage in montreal of being a local boy.

Lutter will dictate and control the match with his game. Yeah he is one dimensional but that one dimension is way too much for Rich’s ground skills. Lutter know he messed up with his weight against Anderson. He will not let this chance slip away. Everyone picks Franklin to destroy him but that is because Rich is a just familiar face to them.

by Kenny on Jan 14, 2008 11:23 AM EST reply actions

Oh man, I’ve even thought about this match before. I agree that you can’t count Lutter out. I believe if Lutter wasn’t so tired from attempting to cut weight, he could’ve finished Silva in the first round, possibly by arm bar or something.

Yeah, yeah, everyone calls Lutter one-dimensional. That’s what Cote said and look at how quick that dude submitted.
