UFC 84: Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua expects to fight on the card

Mauricio shogun ruaPride FC light heavyweight sensation, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, expects to return to action at UFC 84 on April 19 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, according to GracieMag.com.

No opponent was named in the report.

Here's a snip from the Brazilian:

"I'm already preparing for my return, I'll fight on April 19th. Ninja and Dida go back in March. I'm injury free and with none of the pains in my knee that bothered me so, I'll devote my entire day to fighting and I'll be 100%. I'll do my best to give back to my fans."

Rua -- who is recovering from recent knee surgery -- will be looking for redemption after getting submitted via rear naked choke in his Octagon debut against Forrest Griffin at UFC 76: "Knockout" in September 2007.

It was a major upset because Rua was widely considered at the time the most talented 205-pound fighter in the sport of mixed martial arts. He holds dominant wins over standouts such as Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Ricardo Arona, Alistair Overeem, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and others.

There are numerous possible opponents for Rua; however, the one getting the most buzz is Tito Ortiz. "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" could also be lined up for Lyoto Machida.

Time will tell.

GSP/Serra, and Shogun on the card….IM THERE!

I read that Ortiz was being rumored to fight Machida. Wouldn’t care either way. Jardine should be thrown in the mix as well with one of these guys. Jardine rematch with Liddell would be ok. Thiago Sivla needs to get himself a fight against a top five guy too.

If Chuck is ready to go in April..I like Shogun vs Chuck..the ufc has offered To set Tito up with Machida..I like to see him and Rua square up. Rashad Evans..Thiago Silva..Jardine..would also be good a fight to watch.

I am so pummped for this, as a canadian and long time fan of the UFC since I was 15. I see Machida fighting Rua, though Rua lost his last fight the UFC brass is not fond of Michida because of his so called boring fights. I think Machida would pick Rua apart.

I think Machida and Tito are both bad matchups for Shogun…I think after coming off a loss and still being alot younger than most the 205s Shogun should fight someone whos not top 10, and i think Machida should fight Tito, since he has yet to fight a big powerful wrestler, this fight might be the most boring fight in ufc history, but it could also show if Machida has all bases covered or if he will struggle with the strong wretlers with good gnp and sub skills….Shogun vs Gouviea would be an aweosme fight that will be dangerous for shogun as well, but if he wins its more credible than a David Heath or someone like that

I definitely agree. Rua likes to get his opponent in the clinch and either knee them, or take them down and do what looks like a superman punch while they are down. Rua does have good striking, but Machida’s is second only to his training parter Anderson Silva.

Jardine vs. Machida and Rua vs. Ortiz. That’s what I’d like to see.

I Would have agreed with all of this if not for Machida’s last fight. He absolutely worked over Soko, including in the stand-up. I also agree he would beat Rua.

I would love to see Chuck/Shogun,(especially in Cananda) but I think it would be bad timing for both fighter,(w/ Chuck coming off a W and Rua comin off a L)
Chuck probably wouldn’t want it because it wouldn’t get him in title contention.
Rua probably wouldn’t take it because he probably wants an easier fight to get him back on a roll, and fighting Chuck right now is risky for him.(not saying he would lose, but it could happen)

I was thinking the UFC would match-up:
Chuck/Machida(but Hack said it would be a bad fight for chuck)
Shogun/Jardine
or:
Chuck/Jardine
Machida/Shogun
and Wanderlei/Evans, all IMO would be realistic choices made by Joe Silva.

It will be in Montreal. MMA is not sanctioned (yet!) in Ontario.

I think dont think Rua is leaving enough time for himself to recover from injury and train for a fight. He needs a few more months, especially as he lost his first UFC fight. He should be looking to train harder and return in June or July for a fight against someone outside the top 10, or 5 atleast. Maybe Jardine would be a good one.

Looking good for Canada, Franklin, GSP, Rua.
Looking really good because you have fighters like Jason Macdonald, Sam Stout that will fight in the undercard.

Unfortunatly tripleainto is right, MMa is not sanctioned here in Toronto, or anywhere in Ontario Canada.

This UFC will most definetly be in Montreal Quebec. And I will most definetly be going….

It should end up being a great card for the UFC’s Canadian debut live. Boy am I glad for that. I would not be happy if they tried bringing UFC-80 or 81 here. Those cards should still be good, but, I mean UFN free/TV good, NOT $40 good.

I think Machida would pick Rua apart.

Yeah I agree. Machida is that damn good, especially in the cage. Shogun is of course a great fighter too but I know people make excuses for the Pride guys but here goes. Firstly, I don’t think his wild aggressive style will translate that well to the octagon. I’m a huge Shogun fan but I’m a little worried about his next fight. Tito asked for Shogun back in June or July last summer on the Underground so I believe that Tito reckons he’s a really bad matchup for Shogun, which he may well be.

In the long run Shogun will be fine and should be very successful in the UFC as he is so young. He just needs to get his training, nutrition and strategy right. I don’t know maybe he can make 185 but I’m sure he can beat up on the the 205ers. He does appear to be naturally larger than Wandy that’s for sure. I want him at 205 anyway.

He’ll adjust and adapt in time. Maybe in the long run his baptism of fire in the octagon will prove to be a good thing, who knows. Since he’s reputedly on the Canadian card I would imagine he’s now not getting Ortiz since fathead wants to fight in Mexico in May I believe.

I wouldn’t mind seeing him in there Thiago Silva now that he has left Chute Boxe in Curitiba. Would it happen? Don’t think you can play the friendship card if you want to make it to the top in the UFC.

I know that Mauricio and Murilo plan to set up a their own facility in Massachusetts. I’d like to see them hook up with Team Link, Gonzaga’s crew. Gabe is a former Chute Boxe guy too. Interesting huh. What do you guys think? It makes sense I think.

They need to get Jardine in there with Rua. That way when Rua stomps him, Jardine will fall out of top 10 where realistically he does not belong and no one wants to see him there. Most sites have him n the top 10, and I do think he earned it, but still his is the only name that just sticks out like it does not belong there. I still don’t think he is a top 10 fighter and he needs to be knocked back into his real status as a good B level fighter.

With Ortiz stating he wants to fight on Cinco De Mayo(May)…the Shogun/Tito rumors should pretty much die.

Agreed. He seems to have his sights squarely set on a big pay day in Mexico. What with being half mexican and trying to expand into new territories I suppose it makes sense from a business perspective for the UFC. Might muster up more PPV buys too, not sure how it is aired in Mexico, it may or may not be PPV (UFC is not PPV in Europe). Probably get some more PPV buys from the latin demographic in the US, I don’t know.

I’d imagine Tito’s merchandise would sell well at the event but do the UFC allow him to sell his own gear at their events?I wouldn’t be surprised if it was strictly just UFC merchandise at their own events, don’t want the fans spending money on stuff other than their own. Actually of course they wouldn’t. They didn’t even let this site sponser Jon Fitch and have their logo on his shorts. Ridiculous.

Jardine vs. Shogun wouldn’t be appropriate…with Jardine KTFO Griffin and Griffin subbing Shogun…although it would be an exciting fight…Logic says it should be Lyoto/Jardine…or a Jardine/Liddell 2…to solidify who is #1 contender…that HAS to happen before Liddell gets another shot at Rampage(in which I don’t see why he should after getting dismantled twice by Rampage).

Tito is past it. He can give a good fight but realistically, he will never be a contender for the title again. If he gets in with Machida he will get dismantled slowly. Rua would knock him the fuck out. Jardine beat Chuck and we all know that Chuck owns Tito. Lets not even put Rampage in the equation coz hes just way above Ortiz. Rashad got cheated out of a win against Ortiz and Forrest should have at least got a draw. So Tito is, at most, ranked number 8 in UFC LH. Id say Thiago Silva is also above him too though and I would love to see Soko knock Ortiz the fuck out.

That wont be an issue. Rua wanted to fight in March but the UFC wanted to save him for UFC 84 in Canada. If shogun thought he would be ready to fight in March then there is no reason that he wont be ready to fight by the 3rd week of April.

I just don’t thnk he is that good, I think he had a great year, and earned his ranking for now, But I don’t think he will win even half his fights next year. here is a rundown how thing will go. He will loose next 2, since he will fight top 10 copetition now.(I can’t think of any top 10 he beats), then UFC will give him a can, to see if he still belongs in UFC he will beat him, and loose to the next good opponent. That is how I see it. Sorry to say but this was it,Jardine blew his load and next year will come back to the ranks of mediocrity

So what you are saying is that b/c Shogun is a little younger (in his div.) he shouldn’t fight top ten?? (GsP). Makes no sense, up until a few months ago he was in the top 5, maybe top 3. He does belong there…for a very short “right now”. Like I said he had a great year. He caught Griffin (who was not top 10 at the time) and finished him. Much credit. Then had same thing happen to him against Alexander….will call that even as far as moving up and down in the rankings….And than had the fortune of catching Chuck on a bad day and as you said outscoring him…with leg kicks to the body. It was in no way as an impressive of an upset as Griffin vs. Rua. And it was more quality then Serra vs St.Piere, but still a lucky win. Let me ask you if you had to bet and it was even money…would you put money on Jardine vs. anyone else in top 10? Including Chuck or Forest rematches? I would say an easy NO.

If tito is a boring fighter then your sister is boring in bed.(she is NOT) He demolished rashad for every minute but the last 29 seconds. Did you forget the choke and then mont at the end of round 2 (which evens was saved by the bell). oh and you must have forgot how he fought Chuck liddel to the very end. and how many elbows did he drop and forrest face. well you cant count that high. And lets not for get the 1,2 and three times he killed the most dangerous man. Tito is definatley one of the UFC top 5 fighters. Please let Tito fight , Evans again jardin, then Shogun, and after those three wins give him a title shot because he has proven himself to be a true competitor and not a fight ducker like alot of these clown. I know your name bud but it doesnt suite you. you sound more like jism or (sperm) for those of you who dont know the slang term jism. And so you know i respect anyone who works as hard for what they want in life as i do. My screen name discribes what i have accomplished. So i know what its like to have haters sit on their couch and judge those who are warriors and who are in the fight instead of spectators like yourself who just love to hate. But anytime you come to Sacramento Ca and you want a lesson in manners come see me. You need the address then reply to this quote and i will gladly give it to you.AS for the type of man tito is he was a champ who has been on the top. Who has betten wanderlia, vitor belfort, and other big name. But chuck does have his number and i will admit that but everyone has someone who they cant beat, Just look at chuck and rampage. Chuck is great but rampage has his number. Shogun is great but he got his butt whooped by forrest, and tito beat forrest and so on and so on. But you wouldnt know anything about that JISM, or (SPERM) cuz your a spectator from your couch you lazy lop. Im out

I believe shogun might be set up with wandy if he recovers because both lost their intro fights which is what the ufc seems to like doing. They like sending hungry guys after each other. Chuck vs Shogun would be bad news for shogun i predict at least knock out for liddell. Dont get me wrong i would love to see chuck/shogun and honestly I hope it happens but at this moment in time chuck would kill him.

other interesting possibilities to think about: shogun/alexander, shogun/evans, shogun/gouveia, shogun/sokoudjou, shogun/irvin, shogun/sobral

ultimately i would love to see the ufc feed shogun to the iceman
