Clearing up some UFC number confusion:

UFC
Just got this from a reliable source:

  • UFC 83 is slated for March 8 in Manchester, England
  • UFC Fight Night is slated for April 2 in Denver, Colorado
  • UFC 84 is slated for April 19 in Montreal, Canada

It's a bit odd to have two major events scheduled for back-to-back weekends (UFC 82 and UFC 83). We'll have to wait and see if UFC 83 is free on SpikeTV (like UFC 75) or is a pay-per-view (PPV) event.

LOTS of quality events coming in March and April. Hopefully that will make up for the piss poor January and February…

by ViolentMike on Jan 10, 2008 2:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

As an MMA fan, it’s good to have so many events to watch, it really is. At the same time, I wonder if putting PPV events so close together is going to force UFC fans to start picking and choosing which events they buy, rather than simply buying them all, as many fans did back in the “8 events per year” days.

Didn’t WWF have this problem back in the late 90s/early 2000s? They started to get popular enough that the PPVs became more frequent, and they ended up with fans who started being choosy about which shows to buy? Somebody correct me if I’m mis-remembering.

Lucky me, I still manage to buy every UFC PPV, although there have been a couple I wish I had skipped after viewing them (Tito vs. Rashad, I’m looking at you).

No kidding,…..
UFC 80 and 81 are not worthy of PPV. They are more UFN free/TV type of cards..

Good way to start a “new year” :(

i’m getting kind of tired of the UFC. I really miss Pride right about now.
I’m just so sick of hearing and seeing Dana White and Goldberg, and Joe Rogan, whom i really like and think is a great commentator but too much overexposure!

80 and 81 should be on Spike. I hope after march and april..we don’t get another season..PPv events sold just by the name brand and not the fights.

Am I that Reliable source? Because if not, I so posted that in the other blog like at noon, so boo ya!

UFC 83 HAS TO BE FREE ON TV. Literally, if it is not free on TV, then we are looking at the biggest bomb of a PPV period.

I am a little upset that they are delivering weak ppv’s and at the same time they keep increasing the cost.

by MMAmania on Jan 10, 2008 3:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The gap between UFC 83 and UFC 84 is huge, like 6 weeks, it’s kinda like what happened between UFC 73 and UFC 74. Those times were pretty hard.
At least UFC 84 isn’t consdered some ‘international’ fight card compared to the English and Irish fight cards.

It kinda shocks me that they would actually have a big show (worthy of a number) the weekend after another big show. On top of that, it only has 1 match announced, which is Bisping’s MW debut. So far, the “83” show is pretty pathetic.
Think about it:
LW title at 80 .. if Penn wins and lives up to his “one/two fights a year” idea, then you won’t see this title at 83
MW title at 82
HW “title” at 81
WW title at 84/Montreal

So “83” isn’t gonna have a title match, has 1 “announced” match. Who cares if Bisping is from London. Theres no reason to have him headline a London show, thats specifically for him. I mean, I don’t see the UFC jumping at putting Anderson Silva in Brazil anytime soon.

Theres my .02 on the matter

that people say ufc 84 is a week later and i thought that was kinda weird.

Mania, Thanks for clearing up the confusion. Don’t sleep on UFC 83. So far the only fight mentioned for this event is Bisping vs. McCarthy which is a generous gift by the UFC to Bisping since McCarthy is basically an opponent chosen to increase Bisping’s highlight reel because He had a tough past 2 fights.
Lets not complain about this event until we know more about it because if my sources are correct this event will feature the UFC debut of a major top fighter in the Lightweight division. Cross your fingers and hope I am right because if I am, we will all be happy!

i think more ppv shows the ufc has the more money they make. Over the last couple of years the least buys they got for a ppv was still 200,000 wich is still pulling in 8 million dollars. We all know that the loyal ufc fans will order every ppv if at all possible. As a fan though i would love to see more free fights on spike because if they start bunching all of these ppv shows together it is going to get quite pricey. So in a one month period they want us fans to purchase 4 ppv’s and starting with ufc 81 the price is suppose to jump up to 45 dollars instead of the normal 40. AT this rate we would be shelling out 175 dollars in a one month span.

Yo, I am hearing Big things about UFC 84 in Canada. This event should be an overall better event then even UFC 82 wich features the Instant Classic in the making between Henderson/Silva.

This is what I am hearing about the card, thus far:

GSP vs. Matt Serra for the welterweight title

Sean Sherk vs. The winner of BJ Penn/Stevenson (unless the winner gets injured in there UFC80 fight

Shogun is making his return against an unnamed opponent

This will be the 1st event since UFC 73 stacked that will feature 2 title fights. Sean sherk recently stated that he will fight at that event and that the UFC will give him an immediate title shot against the winner of Penn and stevenson.

Shogun would be ready by March but the UFC told him that they want him to fight in Canada….It looks like the UFGC will make a BIG Splash in its Canadian Debut. This will probably be the best international card up to date.

Would that be Gomi?

yes sir. I hear a match up between Gomi and Frankie Edgar brewing. Hopefully my source is right about the signing of Gomi, but I hope they match him up against someone else because as ViolentMike stated the other day Edgar isn’t the best match up for Gomi to make his debut against.

I’ve already read that Michael Bisping will be fighting Charles McCarthy (Captain Miserable) on the March 8th (UFC 83)card

I would be VERY SURPRISED if UFC 83 is in LONDON on March 8th as at the 02 Arena (where they held 75) on that date is already set and announced DAVID HAYE VS ENZO MACRANELLI for the Cruiserweight unification titles.

Maybe elsewhere in the country but surely not London, as this fight will be hyped to the hills and doubt Dana will want to compete against this all british boxing tussle.

by MJC_123 on Jan 10, 2008 4:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Oh and Bisping is not from London.

by MJC_123 on Jan 10, 2008 4:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ufc 83 needs 2 be scratched. It’s so stupid that they are gunna have some shit card to fill a void and take away fighters from ppv’s for the summer. Fuck Bisping, no1 cares bout him. Push his mw debut back a month or at fight night. Ufc 83 should be the april 19th event, and the FN should be in between.

This all sounds GREAT to me!!!
This will be my first live event, and it sounds like it is shaping up to be an amazing night.

Just the other day I was wondering when the UFC will have another ppv with two title fights? I hope your source is right.

thanks for the “news”. I look forward to your follow-ups on UFC 84..

I get all the events free (Bravo in the UK or torrents) and I’d like to skip a few events.

I’ve seen so much MMA in the last few months it’s starting to lose it’s luster. Especially in December with WEC, IFL, Yarenoka, TUF Finale, K-1 and UFC 76.

I’d like them to have the events a month apart since the cards would be better and they’d mean more. Why not combine UFC 80 and 83 and get a good/great card instead of an alright one.

by SixT-4 on Jan 11, 2008 5:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

This is true and the only other indoor arena in London big enough for UFC83 is Wembley arena but Cage Rage have an event there on 8th March. I’ve heard this may be in Glasgow, which is in Scotland, and no Bisping isn’t from Glasgow either.

Man, UFC 84 is gonna be STACKED. It would be sweet if it was also the UFC debut of Takanori Gomi. Put him against Clay Guida. Instant classic.
