IFL starts 2008 off with three title fights in one night

IFL 2008
Less than two months removed from the 2007 Grand Prix Finals during which champions were crowned for the first time in the short history of the promotion, the International Fight League (IFL) will run another show on Friday, February 29, 2008, and put three titles back on the line.

According to a recent press release, middleweight champion Matt Horwich will take on the extremely game Tim Kennedy, who capped off a solid 2007 fight season with a stoppage of Elias Rivera at the Grand Prix just days after giving Mayhem Miller all he could handle at HDNet Fights: "Reckless Abandon."

Ryan Shultz -- who crushed and abused undefeated phenom Chris Horodecki in the first round during their lightweight title bout at the Grand Prix -- will defend his belt for the first time against John Gunderson (the man who he replaced to face "The Polish Hammer").

In addition, Roy Nelson will put his heavyweight crown on the line against IFL newcomer, Fabiano Scherner.

This event, which takes place at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, will also feature the team competitions between Matt Lindland's Team Quest vs. Ken Shamrock's Lions Den and Team Xtreme Couture vs. Mario Sperry's MMA Top Team.

It's the first time that Xtreme Couture and its Las Vegas-based fighters will be represented in the competition.

Here's the fight card to date:

Prelim

145 lbs.: Ian Loveland vs. Dennis Davis

Team Xtreme Couture vs. MMA Top Team (Mario Sperry)

170 lbs.: TBD vs. Marcello Salazar
185 lbs.: Benji Radach vs. TBD
TBD: Match up TBD

Team Quest (Matt Lindland) vs. Lions Den (Ken Shamrock)

170 lbs.: TBD vs. Pat Healy
155 lbs.: Ryan Schultz vs. John Gunderson
265 lbs.: Roy Nelson vs. Fabiano Scherner

Main Event
185 lbs.: Tim Kennedy vs. Matt Horwich

For tickets, which go on sale as of January 12, head over to www.orleansarena.com or call (702) 284-7777. For more details hit up the IFL official Web site.

Mania….y did u erase my post yesterday on BJ Penns thoughts about the Liddell/Silva fight. It was a real interesting post and I just quoted BJ’s words….I dont even think he cursed in that interview….I dont understand y its not on here. I posted it and it wasnt being moderated. But today it was erased.

BJ talked about how he is a good freind of chuck’s but was really impressed by wanderlei’s warrior-like performance. BJ accused PRIDE guys of being roided but he said not wanderlei. He stated wanderlei was in phenominal shape and he said Chuck hit him with some incredibly hard shots and was impressed that wanderlei didnt go down and continued to fight through it. He said even though it was a loss, it was one of wanderlei’s greatest performances and he commended him for it.

Chuck Wants Jardine, Almost Retired-SOURCE!!
heres a new interview, in which chuck liddell states he probably would have retired if he lost wanderlei silva. and he says he personally wants to fight jardine next, to avenge his loss.

do you want to see chuck vs jardine two? and you have to wonder, if chuck was going to retire then, he might be thinking he will retire after his next loss?

Team Couture in the IFL, huh? Its almost gotten to the point where Randy should just do everything in his power to piss of Dana White. One of which being, join the IFL.

Noticed a typo regarding the IFL HW champion. You have it stated that Matt Horwich (instead of Roy Nelson) will defend his HW title against Fabio Scherner.

The IFL changes (team names, belt defenses, live telecasts, etc.) should be good for MMA and change the IFL brand dramatically. I’m still not sure about the team concept, but it will be better this season. Hopefully HDNFights picks up the whole season.

Gracias. Made the correction.

No it wasnt a video. It was an interview with BJ Penn He stated how good freinds him and chuck are and that he thinks a lot of Pride fighters were on roids, but not wanderlei. He was really impressed with wanderlei and his chin, aty some of the big shots chuck hit him with that wanderlei substained. It was the first post under the Spencer fisher/marcus Aerelio thread.

If I remember right the interview came from a UK magazine or newspaper…maybe “The Sun. Uk” or something to that affect.

The Xtreme Couture blog says the Loveland vs Davis fight is apart of the Xtreme Couture vs Team Quest. The title fights are going to be separate from the team concept this year.
