If your going to do a book signing in the tri state area..and your going to NYC..you pick S.I. and not Manhattan?? Maybe cuz it’s Serra’s Turf??

I’ve only read 2 pages so far. It was an entertaining 2 pages, but once I get out of work for the day, I’m always doing something…

Yeah, that would be like the Sharks and the Jets all over again.

off the subject

According to Sam Caplan at ProElite, Bodog Fights welterweight champion Eddie Alvarez (12-1) has signed a three fight deal with EliteXC. Alvarez who fought as a welterweight with Bodog will drop down to EliteXC’s 160lb lightweight division.

Alvarez is scheduled to fight the Hawaiian Ross “Da Boss” Ebanez on the main event in the upcoming ShoXC event January 25 on Showtime.

Also part of the deal, Alvarez will be able to fight in M-1 Global’s upcoming promotions.

My book was delivered on saturday. I’ve read about half of it. The first few chapters are pretty much random events that happened to him and his brother growing up. Starts getting into the fighting side around chapter four. its a pretty good read so far. I paid an extra 20 bucks to have it signed. Hughes signed a bunch of stickers and slapped them in the books.

Im not afan of Hughes’ so I wont be bying the book. I mean how exciting can life growing up on a farm really be. And if most his accounts are hearsay like the piece that was on here about that street fight betwee Tito Ortiz and Lee Murray, you know the one he wasnt even at, then Im sure the excitement level of the book will rise even more. My guess is it wont be a best seller. He may have been a good Welterweight Champion his time, but he’s done and the life of a farm boy that kicks it with Tim Sylvia (another douche bag)cant be all that exciting. I wonder if the book wil be revised and tell about his secod loss to St Pierre. proboblynot. Matts ego would never allow it.

JamesS, you had to pay an extra $20 to have it autographed? When did you order yours? I ordered before Christmas, and it was free to have it autographed. I also asked for it to be personalized for my wife, and he included her name. However, I did not recieve any stickers. What kind of stickers did he send, John Deere?

Yeah I got mine off his website before Christmas and got a free autograph also. It even arrived in only 4 days.

Just met Hughes at the Ridgewood, NJ signing. Nice guy, down to earth.

Looking forward to reading the book.

I used to be a book editor, and I can tell you that whatever assbrained jackanapes who worked on this book at his publisher and his literary agent deserved to be bitchslapped like a bunch of fresh fish in the prison yard for one simple reason – the release date.

Usually a hardcover comes out about a week or two prior to projected release date set by the publisher for retailers, distributors, and online shops in order to make sure that nobody has an unfair advantage selling a book ahead of schedule. The demand for this book was not likely to eclipse a “Harry Potter” book or even something more vacuous like any random book on “Oprah’s List of Shitty Books You HAVE to Read.” So, if somebody gets their copy a couple days earlier than somebody else, the publisher is not likely to give a fuck.

Let me say that while Matt Hughes may be a strong wrestler, and he may have had any number of strong performances in the UFC and in Grappler’s Quest, he is an intolerant asshole whose ego is way bigger than the fights he delivers. I have seen a lot of assholes fight, and I’d rather admire someone for the way they conduct themselves on and off the mat.

I walked into two different Borders bookstores in midtown Manhattan (including one flagship store) and they neither had the book in stock, nor did they have it set up for quick ordering in their system. That was last week. That tells me that if one of the largest US retailers didn’t have it in stock by the first week in January, they sure as shit weren’t too concerned with “The Most Dominant Champion in UFC History.” If the publisher had any fucking brains, they would have released the book in the first week of November when the Serra-Hughes fight was gaining momentum, but no, they royally screwed the pooch.

Intresting.

I read the book and didn’t like it at all. A bunch of self-indulgent bull and some farm antics (throwing something at Marc Fiore, won’t go into too much detail). He tells about these events in his life and has no explanation for them (i.e. Tim Sylvia). He also has these stupid inside jokes in the book that aren’t funny at all, and lame excuses for why he didn’t win fights. I went in pretty unbiased but now I totally agree with Matt Serra.

One more thinkg, PhilQNY – My experience has been that the better part of publishers don’t understand shit outside of the bottom line. All they’re going to see is that MMA is a niche market. They’re not going to see that it is growing at a near-geometric rate, and to assume that whomever is going to publish a MMA-related book actually understands MMA (much less alone loves it like we do)is proven grossly wrong by the simple irony of when “Made in America” came out.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if you have a product that’s time sensitive (especially true since Matt Hughes himself has stated that he probably has a couple of fights left in him). If they don’t realize that putting out a book AFTER a fight (the outcome of which is impossible to predict). What would have happened if (God forbid) Matt Hughes is crippled and simply unable to walk much less alone compete. I wouldn’t wish this on even an asshole like Matt Hughes. If the book came out well before it’s actual release date, the publisher could take advantage of MMA’s growing awareness.

A noob is likely to see “champion” in the title and assume that Matt Hughes is a bonafide belt-holding champion, NOT an interim champ, or a contender. They’re not likely to give a shit if he’s on the comeback trail or not. They don’t know or give a crap about Evan Tanner. And Matt Hughes’ publisher and his literary agent clearly don’t understand this or what drives legions of fans to support Matt Hughes.

He should have titled his book, how I turned my fans into Matt Serra Fans. What a piece of trash.
