UFCs Diego Sanchez to remain at 170 and fight soon

Props: MySpace.com
Quoteworthy:
"Thank you all so much for your on going support and patience, I will be back in the ring really soon. So to answer ALL the questions about when, where, who and at what weight. Here you go.
- I will know by Feb. who I will be fighting
- Probably Vegas, but site not decided
- Whoever UFC puts in front of me, does not really matter, I will be ready!
- 170lbs
Hope this helps. "
Well, not really, Diego. Nonetheless, it's good to get some sort of update on the "Nightmare" and squash rumors that he would dip down to lightweight (155 pounds) after two straight defeats.

I would like to see diego fight 5 midgets, but why would anyone want to see him fight in the ufc? he has no chance at a title shot, so whats he in it for?

Boooooo. bad choice.
I was hoping to see him get his ass beat at 155. oh well.
they should let Hughesus Christ change his mind. I dont like either fighter, but It would be an entertaining fight(imo).

man it doesnt mean that you hate diego you’ll going to discredit him all the way down,i didnt like him that much either, but i thnk he still have a chance to show that he’s belong in the top 170lbs (we’ll see),he’s got the tools but sometimes have a bad attitude thats why some people hates him,

i hope he’s put back on some more weight since he’s staying at 170, he looked a lot smaller than usual in the fitch fight. maybe that had something to do with fitch being huge, i don’t know, but if he wants to stay at ww and compete with guys like fitch and gsp, he needs to add some size. i mean, don’t get me wrong, he fought decently enough against fitch, but he may have done a lot better in that fight if he was bigger and stronger…

I don’t see him making a dent in the top ww division. We know how he stacks up against Fitch, how would he do against GsP and former trainer?? He is a game fighter..but since the snoozer with Kos..he hit a road block with Fitch..he is not a big Ww weight..but what does he do the ww divison is stacked..and the lw division is the deepest. A fight good int he future for him would be a rematch with Karo. In the light weight a rematch with KenFlo in Kenny’s weight division..and I think a fight with Mac Danzig would be fun to watch.

I can understand people not liking his personality, which is fine..
but a majority of his fights are exciting..
he has beaten top 170 pounders before ..including Karo and Nick Diaz..will fight anyone, which is obvious when he was going to fight Mach and Bj who pulled out then took a fight against Fitch and his weakness is wrestlers
He lost to Kos with a freaking Staph infection..and lost a close fight to Fitch who people think is the 2nd coming and under pride rules he might have won that fight
Give the guy a break, he is a warrior, yet an insane one, but a warrior none the less

I dont understand all the Diego hate personally. He seems pretty cool and always puts on exciting fights. The whole Koscheck fight, he thought he was gonna have to retire before that. That didnt look like the Diego that we usually see, so its obvious somethin was off there. be cool to see him fight again.

Diego is a good fighter, but he is not going to be a top 5 welterweight. He would have been a serious title contender at lightweight. I have to say I am disappointed we won’t see him fight Roger Huerta in Mexico. Diego better get an easy match. I think he can take Karo.

he has to get bigger and stronger if he is staying at 170, otherwise he has no chance against fitch or gsp and he would have a hard time against kos and hughes. he’s a little wierd but he is a great fighter and puts on a great show (except against kos) and i would have loved to see what he could have done at 155.

Sanchez had some good submission attempts and didn’t get into any real trouble..but Jon beat him in the scramble game..and used his size to win..I don’t see Sanchez winning in the stand up with Fitch ever..Fitch in that fight out wrestled Sanchez..Deigo had some submission attempts from the guard but nothing else. Do you think he can be the ww champ in the ufc?? do you think he can beat Bj penn at 155 or 170..maybe he can fight a Josk Burkman, or Swick..but I don’t see him beating GsP for the number 1 spot. with these two weight divisions he is in between a rock and a hard place.

Thank you! Exactly right. Diego has been one my favorite fighters since TUF. If he gets his head right he has the physical ability to compete with virtually any WW. I thought he was too big for LW anyway.

Attn H8rs,
I’m not a Diego fan, but really. He goes undefeated, fights a lackluster fight (with staph) against KOS, loses a split to Fitch who has won his last 14, is undefeated in the UFC at 7-0, and is the top WW contender. Just about everyone who knows anything has him in the WW top 10. To dismiss him just because you don’t see him beating the champ is rediculous… after all, at any given moment there are 200 contracted UFC fighters on that list.
by SaVaGe on Jan 8, 2008 12:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Diego is still a top Welterweight. Kos beat him, but lets be honest, that wasnt the real diego, Fitch on the other hand beat him fair and square.
So what if Diego cant beat Fitch or GSP….he can still give anyone else in the division problems.
Either at 170 or 155 lb, there are many interesting matches to put diego in…..as long as Diego doesnt come out with the Mariachi’s…..he is ok with me!

gsp is the only one right now that i can’t see diego beating, other than him, diego can beat anyone else in either weight class. would he dominate everyone else(bj, fitch, hughes, koscheck, etc.)? probably not, but he’s right there with all those guy in terms of talent and on any given saturday he could beat any of them. do i see him being the ww champ one day? maybe. gsp looks damn good, i’m not sure if anyone could beat him right now. but lets not forget diego has gone through some changes in his life inside and outside the octagon over the last year or two. he lost his focus, but he hasn’t lost his talent. he still is a top contender in the ww division, a close loss to a guy like jon fitch and a bad night against koscheck is gonna change that. put him in there right now with serra, and he’s the next champ 8 or 9 times out of 10.

dude if he had a different gameplan and if he was 100% he would of won that fight with koshcheck and the fight with fitch could have gone either way, fitch didnt land any significant blows the whole fight all he did was throw a few hammer fists when diego was trying to sweep and diego was constantly trying to submitt him and had him in 2-3 very close calls diego was pressing the action the whole fight even from the bottom fitch just laying on top is not a dominant win. not to mention diego already beat top competition in karo and nick diaz, so i dont understand why you guys are complaining about him he just had a tough year and he will be back diego can easily be top 10 even top 5, he can beat karo, koshchek ( with different gameplan, hes done it before), once serra losses to gsp he can beat serra, and fitch now hughes would be a good fight and i personally dont think he can beat gsp but damn he can still and is still top 10 WW

Im happy Diego is fighting soon. I love the guy and think he is a great fighter. He lost to Fitch but was not dominated. I thought he was the better fighter and only lost due to being the smaller fighter. He needs to pack on some muscle and he can be back in big way. People who want to write the guy off dont know what they are talking about.
Outside of GSP, I dont see anyone in that division who is clearly better than him? And dont say Fitch cause he by no means was clearly better than him. He was bigger and stronger and was able to eek out a split decision by basically laying on him. It was Diego who was continually trying to finish that fight.
And whats with all the hate towards the guy? I just dont see why people are so hard on the guy? He seems like a real cool guy and always brings it in the octagon(save the Kos fight).
I for one cant wait to see the Nightmare back in action.

i agree. he cant beat gsp for the title. but if gsp moves up at some point, i think diego can more than hold his own against kos, swick, serra or maybee even hughes if he is still fighting. as far as fitch is concerened a five rounder might be in diego’s favor. i think fitch has too cut alot of weight to make 170. nothing against fitch, who i think is 2nd in the ww’s, but could he escape all those sub attempts for 5 rounds? diego is a cardio machine. after his fight w/ nick diaz is when i knew the tuf fighters were for real.

Bad idea, why would you want to stay at 170lbs when you know even the 2 guys you lost to are not gonna be champions in the next few years. Do yourself a favor and drop to 155lbs. Sometimes i don’t know if it’s being lazy or just being stubborn. Ok, he lost to wrestlers, how about Taekawando(GSP) or Jiu jitsu(Serra)..dude is not gonna last.

yeah that fight as a strange match up for kenny seeing as how close up the contender ranks he is and joe lauzon having 3 wins(one to jens and two over some very low rankers). i would have thought kenny would have gone a for a more notable opponent like frank edgar who has a few but very noticable wins as of late(griffin and spencer) or he could even have fought thiago tavares as well. what do you think?

that doesnt make any sense having lylte over diego and karo over him as well. karo has beat some mid level noticables since his loss to diego but diego has faced high noticable like joe riggs, kos and fitch since his fight with karo. diego did have six wins ina row over alot of high prifle fighters to get him close to a title shot he even asked for matt hughes after his ko win over joe riggs! it sounds like your mad at him for beating nick diaz!

Well said Savage, I don’t know why everyone is hating on Diego so much. I am not a fan of is neither, but to say that he shouldn’t be in the UFC… that’s laughable!!! He thought he was going to die up until like a week before the KOS fight. In all honesty, he shouldn’t have even fought that night. I would actually say that most fighters, would have withdrawn, but not Diego, he is a warrior.

I agree. Kos skills just aren’t there yet. His stand up is still weak…he constantly looks for the wild home run. We all know is wrestling is great, but if the fight went to the ground I still think Diego would scramble his way into good position and eventually submit Kos. Thats y when they fought and Diego was half dead with a staph infection, Kos didnt even try to take Diego down until the end of the rounds…he didnt want any part of Diego on the ground.
I cant think of a good match up that would be available to Diego in march or April…maybe:
Rematch with Karo (but Karo said he doesnt want to fight until his “title shot”)
I would like to see the UFC bring Carlos Condit up from the WEC to fight Diego, but Condit is there champ and one of the faces of the UFC and I dontt hink that the WEC is ready to give him up.
Any ideas for an opponent?

I would like to see a fight between Diego Sanchez and Marcus Davis. I think that that would make for an EXTEMELY exciting fight. It sounds like an excellent idea for a main event of an Ultimate Fight Night, or as the opening fight of a PPV. But then again, if we keep getting cards like 80 and 81, this could be a co-main event fight…
But seriously, The Nightmare vs The Irish Hand Grenade would be excellent.

As a huge fan of Marcus Davis (since he trains with Jorge a lot and I have met him many many many times) I think that would be a terrible match-up for Marcus.
I think Deigo’s submission defense is great, and I think Deigo would take down Marcus at will and he would beat him into a pulp via ground and pound. I see that being a steamroller for Deigo.

yep id fancy both Nick Diaz and Jake Sheilds chances
i was sticking with just ufc fighters and also tried to avoid 185ers who could possibly drop down just to make the point that there are atleast 1 fighters better than iego at 170
he did scrape a win over karo but i think they hve moved in opposite directionssince then
kao seems to have learnt how to scrape a win when hes having an off night
diego on the other hand was exposed big time by both koscheck and fitch
both are very good fighters but they looked way better than him which is why i would put $$$ on sherk to beat him as his wrestling is up there with hughes and kos and gsp
as you can probably tell im not much of a diego fan…
cant see him getting a title shot anytime soon
even at 155 id expect him to struggle
guys like tyson griffin roger huerta and joe daddy would give him problems and BJ would rip off an arm or choke him
hopefully hell come to fight in his next bout as i wasnt impressed at all by his performance against kos or fitch

I guess that is why they have the fights. GSP vs. Serria / Leddell vs. Rampage / Randy vs. Gonzoga – all are fights that had unforeseen outcome winners. I think Diego could win fights against Kos and Fitch on any given night. I know he isn’t perfect, but he is a lot potential to get better. His fights are great! Diaz and Karo were incredible fights with tons of skill involved. These fights were ground game chess matches, incredible display of bjj.
I think is great for the WW class to have Diego back, he will be great to stir things up. I say MORE of the Nightmare!

1. georges st.pierre
2. bj penn if he moved up
3. koscheck, I think he’s a better wrestler than fitch.
5. fitch
6. matt hughes
7. karo parisyan
8. diego sanchez
9. thiago alves
10. matt serra, I think his last fight was a fluke, calm down its just my opinion, serra’s good enough to be top 10 but I think every fighter in front of him on my list could beat him more times than he beats them.

I think penn and gsp are very close, and think koscheck is definitely better than hughes going by there last fights, koscheck gave gsp much more difficulty than hughes did. Penn has the best chance of any of these guys to beating gsp convincingly, not by some freak punch or submission but to beat him by decision which leaves no doubt. I’m not sure he ever will but think he has the most potential of any on my list . Problem is gsp trains much harder and smarter than penn does, I think if they fought right now I think gsp would win but if Penn trained as hard and as smart as gsp does I think he would win.

Don’t really like the guy, and not srue i’d be rooting for Diego in many fights, but he is good, and would make for some more very interesting fights, a very good top contendar, not sure if he’d ever be championship level good, but a top contendar none the less, I put my money on him agasint Fitch seeing there last fight, talk about lay and pray, I like Fitch but MAN!
At least Diego was throwin up sub attempts, Fitch was in survival mode the whole time.

Yups. One disadavantage that BJ Penn has at fighting at Welterweight is the weight-cutting. We all know that 170 is not his normal weight class. So if he trains hard and loses a lot of weight he will enter the fight much smaller than all of his competitors. I know that many peeps will say that it doesn’t matter, but it does. When BJ penn trains for a fight at 155 he is in the process of cutting weight and training to get into top shape. It must be hard for him to train hard for fighting at 170 while maintaing weight between 165-170 pounds. Although it doesnt matter because BJ Penn is a top two Welterweight contender if he wanted to be.

Kos got a descision win over Diego when Diego was at 50%. Kos fighting Diego at 100%. Diego will defintely be taking him out, no descision either.

Cool to hear he’s gonna be fighting again im a fan. Thought moving down to LW was a good idea but i guess he has his reasons for staying at 170. Most of the fighters at WW could fight at a higher weight level so there good sized welterweights where Diego isnt a big welterweight but would be a decent sized LW. If at 170 he’s this good then i gotta believe if he went down to LW he would be some serious competition. But all well i’ll still look foward to seeing him fight at 170. Im not even gonna comment on the Fitch or KOS fight been there done that. Just good to hear some news on Diego.

I dont think Penn will ever hold the WW belt again. He is top 5 WW at best these days. He is a force at LW and still can compete at WW i dont see him holding the belt.

That is why I like BJ at 55. He actually has to train and be in shape to make weight. At 70, he tries to keep the weight on and he is never in shape…even still he is top-5 with world class BJJ and heavy hands. He gives GSP and Hughes all they can handle at 70, yet he is a true 55er.
Can you imagine if BJ actually made the commitment to cut weight to 170? He would be a monster. It would take 20lbs of lean muscle, dropping the twinkie and bong hit regimen, but he would be nearly unbeatable.

F..k everyone that don´t belive in Diego, it´s a monster ,19 fights straight , kos. karo, diaz, wrestlers are his problem . But his is obviously on top 5. the second fight with kos, pretty close, will see, championship material. F..k gsp , he is a wussy, too gay to be ufc champion, i preferred m.serra or hughes. Diegos it`s 26 yo. Remember , ww champion. i´m from Uruguay sorry if i wrote something bad

You guys are all a bunch of fucken haters. Diego Sanchez is bad ass. He’ll fight anybody at 170, would beat anybody at 155. Kos is a bith, Fitch is one of the best at 170. St Pierre is good but Diego has more heart and better submissions. I want to see fitch and St pierre and Diego should fight the winner. Kos and Karo need to fight
