UFC Quick Quote: Dan Henderson set to 'kick ass' against Anderson Silva at UFC 82

"I'm excited. I'm ready to go kick his ass. Style-wise, I'm just a bad fight for him. He's very tough, very talented, but he hasn't fought anybody like me. My strength is the clinch game, and I don't get out of position there to allow strikes. That's what he thrives on - guys that are out of position and not very good in that clinch. For me, that's where I'm going to beat him up, and if he gets there with me, I'm going to be taking him down and beating him up on the ground."
-- Dan Henderson sounds extremely confident going into his title fight with UFC Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva, at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" on March 2 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, according to a recent interview with Brawl Sports. "Dangerous" Dan feels like his has the perfect style to take out the "Spider" once and for all. Rich Franklin played the clinch game (once) ... and lost twice. However, this should be a totally different fight thanks in large part to Henderson's superb Greco Roman wrestling pedigree. Talk about an amazing must-see match up.
Note: The article also reveals that Henderson has signed a five-fight contract extension.

I cant wait either. If anyone can do it its Hendo. I love Silva and Im scared Hendo is gonna take this title from him. This has potential to be fight of the year.

That clinch was less than kind to Franklin. If Henderson doesn’t beat Silva then Silva will hold the belt until he retires.

In a follow up to our article earlier this week about Dana White proclaiming that Randy Couture would fight the winner of the Tim Sylvia — Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fight (which will happen on February 2nd), it appears that White was advised to do so by his legal team.
White was advised not to strip Couture of the UFC Heavyweight Championship since Couture’s contract says that as long as Couture is the champion, he can’t fight for another organization. There is a provision in the contract for retiring, however retiring means you can’t fight for another organization.
Meanwhile Couture maintains his stance that his fighting days for the UFC are over and the only fight he’s interested in is with Fedor Emelianenko. Couture still contends that his contractual agreements with UFC is up in October.
-We all assumed Randy might come back to the UFC because Sylvia/Noguerra was for the interim title….Randy is not EVER comming back to the UFC. Dana has to keep Randy as UFC champ, if not Randy would be able to fight outside the organization. Dana needs to stop being so petty and let Randy leave. He doesnt want to b UFC champ, so let him g do whatever he wants.
You cant force someone to be champ that doesnt want to be champ! He said he is almost certain that he will fight against Fedor in the last quarter of 2008

Silva can win this fight in many different ways. He is the best striker in the UFC and he can surely be just as effective without using the clinch. Henderson can take the fight to the ground which can be a good or bad thing for him. Silva is very accomplished on the ground. Either way it will be a great fight. Henderson will be looking for the big KO I think but Silva will be too ellusive. I have said it before, I think this fight will be very similar to the Silva vs Lee Murray fight a few years back. Silva will be working the leg kicks and keeping a distance from Hendersons fists and will be looking to avoid the take down. The key here is Anderson working the leg kicks. I will go with Silva by Unanimous decision!

PhilQNY, ViolentMike: This past weekend I heard from a really reliable source that Takanori Gomi will fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 83. My source is the same guy who told me Arlovski would fight Werdum at UFC 70 months before the fight was ever announced. He also told me Karo would fight Burkman months before that was ever announced. Take it how u want it, but I really trust this source so I am expecting some kind of announcement about Gomi sometime soon.
Also. Rashad Evans next opponent will be Tiago Silva

Rashad vs Silva? that would make for an awesome matchup and I think the winner really would be put in the top 5 of the division. I think Rashad has a way better chin than Alexander and it’ll be interesting to see how Silva fights a wrestler since his last few opponents were all strikers.

I’m not to sure of how it can work and Dana is being prick about it..I heard on HDnet in a Randy interview..him saying his contract expires in the late summer and in October his working papers expire..something like that. This whole situ sucks for us as fans of MMA..let the best happen regardless of organizations..it’s not all about the ufc..it’s about mma..these tatics IMO will not affect the ufc as much in the short term then it will in the long term. We look at the Chuck vs Wandy fight..years in the making..it only happened cuz Zuffa bought Pride..it should of happened regardless. Dana says how Randy is his friend?? When my friend asks for something..if I can i’ll do it. Dana could do it..but doesn’t want to. Dana says " You can’t brake a contract..a contract is a contract..and we expect Randy to honor it. "
What about Ken’s contract with the ufc?? or Babalu’s?? When the ufc wants to do something they do it.

HOLY F’N CRAP!!!!!!!!!!! But only since this is a Dan Henderson thread, Hendo takes precedence!
What a smart, smart move on the part of Dan Henderson. The article linked above says that Dan was completely interested in fighting Anderson Silva at 185 to unify the titles. The reason he was saying that he was not willing to drop back down was only for his contract negotiations = BRILLIANT. Henderson has since signed a 5 fight contract. I really hope that the UFC gave him the kind of contract he deserves.
I have been talking about this match alot, and we all will be for months leading up to this fight. We always say how Anderson Silva is the most dangerous stiker, and Hendo has never been KO’d. The article wrapped up nicely with “A knockout artist against a wrestler who’s never been KO’d in his career … stylistically, an MMA fight doesn’t get much better than that.” Well said.
NOW, on to Gomi….. John, I REALLY, REALLY hope that this is true. But the thing that I don’t like about this, is that they would be matching him up with Frankie Edgar. I don’t like that idea. Why? Because I see Edgar winning a decision. Gomi can be taken down and when it comes to takedowns in the LW divison, Edgar is second to only Sean Sherk. I think the UFC should put Gomi against more of a striker, which would make for a MUCH more exciting fight, like against Spencer Fisher. Specner Fisher almost always makes for exciting fights, that is, as long as he is not taken down repeatedly (vs Edgar). Although, Gomi deserves to fight the champ, since he is/was the PRIDE champ. But the whole UFC LW Champ situation is a mess. I’d love to see Gomi come in and clean up the mess eventually leading to a BJ vs Gomi rematch, this time for the belt.
Actually, matching Gomi up with Edgar is an AWFUL decision. Not only because of the styles like I mentioned above, but what if Gomi loses? Then is Frankie Edgar the PRIDE LW champ? If the UFC signs Gomi, I think they MUST put him in a unfification bout.

off the subject here an interview with randy
In an interview with PunchDrunkGamer, Randy Couture states he is determined to make the fight with Fedor Emelianenko happen before he retires.
PDG: So you’re definitely planning on fighting Fedor at the end of the year?
Randy: Yeah, the last quarter of 2008 I expect to be in a position to find a way to make the Fedor fight happen. I know he’s going to have competition in between, and I hope those go well for him, and the status [of the fight] remains the same as it is now. I certainly have some acting and training to do between now and then that I am excited about. I’m going to focus on those things and stay in shape and stay sharp and be ready for that fight after my contracts have expired.
PDG: So that is the only fight left that you want?
Randy: At this stage of things, yes that is the only fight I want. I think that if that fight doesn’t happen then you will see me retire. I have been competing not to win titles, but purely for the love of competition and fighting guys that I thought were interesting to fight. Out of all the guys out there right now Fedor is the guy I want to fight. Win or lose I’ll probably retire after that fight and focus on all of that other stuff. At 44 right now, I’ll be 45 when that fight happens, that will be the best fight in my opinion to go out on either way.
Couture makes a bold statement “I’m not really going to settle with the UFC”.
PDG: Well Randy that’s it. I appreciate you taking the time to do the interview; I know you didn’t really want to do any. I also wasn’t planning on bothering you about your issues with the UFC, but thank you for the comments.
Randy: Well I didn’t really want to do any interviews that would inflame the situation or prevent me from settling with the UFC in a positive way. But the ground work has kind of been laid and now the situation is I’m not really going to settle with the UFC so it doesn’t matter. People are getting the word now though, but it’s all good.

ViolentMike: I cant argue against any of your points. I didnt hear anything about Hendo signing a new 5 fight contract, but that is great news. I am praying to god that this Gomi news is real. The guy I got it from is very reliable and he predicted about 5 fights would happen months before they were announced and he was right about all of them, hopefully we wont be disappointed. When I first heard the news I was estatic about Gomi being in the UFC, but I also think it is a bad idea to match him up against Edgar. Many fighters have been bitten by the octagon Jitters in there 1st UFC experience and fighting such a talented wrestler like Edgar is a BAD idea. Gomi is one of the best lightweight fighters in the world but Edgar is no slouch. As long as Gomi is in the UFC, I am happy, but I would like to see him face a different opponent in his first fight, but Gomi in the UFC will equal amazing match ups:
Huerta vs. Gomi……Wow what a fight that would be
Gomi vs. BJ….the rematch…is a well anticipated fight
Gomi vs. Spencer Fisher….would be a striking war
Gomi vs. Aurelio….The rubber match wouldnt be a bad octagon debut for Gomi
I think Gomi’s 1st fight should be against Fisher or Pellegrino. I am sure that many UFC fans dont know Gomi, and he is a young Superstar. I hope that the UFC manages his career with the same care that they do all their TUF goldenboys. Gomi is a Star that should be built up….
Edgar is a dangerous fight. Edgar as Mike pointed out has some of the best takedowns in the division. Gomi is a good wrestler, with some of the best striking in the division. Gomi is probably one of the best at striking while backing up. When backing up his striking is still accurate and very powerful.
Lets just hope that he is in the UFC, we will worry about his opponents later.

I think If Henderson can wear him down, he can take it to a decision. Let Silva burn some energy first round and a little in the 2nd, then beat on him the last three rounds. Just avoid the K0 at the beginning and he should do fine. Avoiding the K0 is something Hendo does best, so Im not worried for him as I do most of Silva’s opponents.

It seems to me that many of these readers want to see him lose because they are not able to understand him, and or get on the same level of emotion that he feels. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I was wondering if this were true.

I dont think you car wear down Silva. His reach advantage and leg kicks will be the diference maker in this fight. Dan wont be able to get close enough and will get abused by Silvas kicks. The truth is that the Middleweight division is the weakest weight class in all of mainstream MMA. I will prove my point by saying this: How can people say that Silva is unbeatable after only facing 2 OR maybe 3 World class opponents. His victories over Rich Franklin are a “wow factor” but other thn that who is there out there for him besides Dan Henderson. I really hope that there are tough up and coming Middleweight fighters out there. We would not have this problem with finding good Title Fights in any other divisions.

I see Silva as a great fighter, but anyone can be beaten. I would like to see Lutter get another shot at him (took him down at will…forget about the knee surgery story) and I like Hendo’s chances as well. Silva seemingly coasts along and whenever he wants turns up the heat….then its over in dominating fashion. He might get caught while coasting. Rich Franklin never was the 2nd coming, so don’t think that Silva has seen and beaten the best. I would like to see a lot of fighters cut down from LHW to MW. Alot of them could do it easily.

Now if silva had some amazing take down defense like chuck then it wouldnt be so lopsided, but go back and look at the silva vs lutter fight and watch how easy it was to get silva to the matt

henderson actually looked decent against rampage, but I still don’t see him being able to take out silva. as for gomi, that’s a lot of hype for a guy who recently was submitted by nick diaz. but that’s not to take anything away from diaz who they should bring back to the UFC so he can beat on his brother nate in the lw division.

Then again, it will be On Demand starting today… Last night I was out until like midnight, and when I ruhsed out of the house, I set the DVR for the “I Love New York” reunion show and American Gladiators. We watched NY when we got home, havent watched Gladiators yet.

Silva has to be shittin in his britches hereing Dan talk about kickin his ass, silvas a great fighter no question but dan man handled quinton in the clinch what do you think hes ganna do to silva. Silva already knows he wont be able to knock out Dan heavy wieghts couldnt even knock him out.
Now if silva had some amazing take down defense like chuck then it wouldnt be so lopsided, but go back and look at the silva vs lutter fight and watch how easy it was to get silva to the matt
Thats great news for the ufc they signed dan to another contract
Nothing is for sur in MMA I know that but I GARANTEE that Dan Henderson wins this bout with a tko stoppage
the fact that wanderlai silva destroyed rampage twice in a clinch. So no big achivement there! Anderson Silva goes to ground so easily cos he wants it there! who won out of lutter vs Silva? and how? so how can you garantee anything at all

Dan’s a beast of a tough dude, but Anderson will be too sharp, varied and fast for him IMO. Silva will win this fight

Henderson is a great fighter, but just because he hasn’t been knocked out yet doesn’t mean he can’t be knocked out. He has never fought anyone with the striking skills and hand speed of Silva. Henderson doesn’t have the foot work to stand with Silva, he just doesn’t. In the clinch I think the two both have different areas of experience. Silva is deadly with his attacks from the clinch, while Henderson’s wrestling from there is world class.
I like Silva in this, but no matter who wins, both guys are classy fighters, and should have a long run as champ. If Silva does win, then who would is next fight possibly be? I can’t think of anyone who can even compete past the first round with him in the division.

If Henderson would of fought Silva in pride I would of favored..Dan..but the ufc mw champ Silva is a different breed of the fighter he was in pride. Even though the cage gives Henderson an Advantege with the takedowns..Silva will find a wayto beat him in the octagon.

I love New York reunion was GREAT. Good ol fashion trashy American TV….and I have to admit I loved every second of it.
The WIRE was a pretty uneventful episode but next weeks episode looks to be awesome.
Headline of the Giants game in the Philadelphia Daily News read: Becoming a Manning….with a picture of Eli, I thought that headline was pretty funny. I will prolly check out Guina on tonights episode of American Gladiators

I actually agree with Dan Henderson. Not only is he strong in the clinch, but he also has a great chin. He has never been knocked out in his MMA career. I think he will be able to eat a few punches from Silva and get into the clinch, take him down and beat him up from top.

I wasn’t saying that Rich Franklin was the second coming, but he ain’t no crappy push-over fighter. I see Anderson Silva as a threat in the LightHeavyweight division too if he wanted to. I know if Michael Bisping dropped the weight he would not be able to defeat Anderson Silva. I’m not saying Anderson Silva is the best MMA fighter who ever lived, but he is a great fighter. I’ve seen his Pride fights and can say that he only legitamely loss once.

I wasn’t poking holes…I agree for the most part. Silva is a superstar, no doubt. Toss the DQ v. Okami, the Chonan video game scissor knee bar/ankle lock and he is undefeated in almost 5 years. I think he will have some tougher matchups coming up. Look how the face of the UFC and MMA has changed in a short time.

i’m saying Henderson in this fight, he’s just way too strong for Silva. It’ll be a TKO stoppage in the third. Although it’s a hard one to call anyone’s “guess” is only as good as anyone’s guess. You can break it down all you want, this one can go either way, so all the educated predictions in the world can be completly dropped in one punch. It will be a great fight. Thats one guarantee…..

I see. Sorry about the mix-up. The MMA and UFC has changed and I hope there are strong opponents out there to compete with him.

I will definitely be dropping coin on Hendo. He will probably have underdog #s unless everyone bets on him.
I don’t see him catching a KO standing, so if he can control on the ground and slip the subs he can find a home for that nasty right hand. If he stays in the guard too long and doesn’t constantly pass/scramble Silva will submit him, probably by triangle/armbar.
Either way, this will be the biggest test for the Spider. Forget the Rampage fight…Hendo is a true MW. It should be a fantastic fight.

If you keep talking like that Dan, Anderson’s gonna hurt you man… then apologize profusely for it afterward.
This fight is nearly two months away and it is already the fight of the year for me. This is one of the toughest fights in both fighters’ careers.
I think Anderson will win this one. Dan may try get the match to play out on the ground, but there will likely be plenty stand-up in this fight. If Dan does not improve the technical aspect of his striking by March 1st Anderson will exploit him.
On the ground, Anderson has a very offensive guard and he constantly threatens submissions and sweeps. This should greatly detract from Dan’s offense on the ground.
This should have been the Superbowl card…

Dan has a hell of a chin and anderson seems to have a good one too, looks like we are going to find out hows is better. I can wait especially since the next two ppv look retarded im soooooooooooooo sick of this interm title BS that they keep pulling, first welterweight, next lightweight then, heavyweight. Is it me or do these champs need to get there shit together.(besides serra)

silva has the beter stand up but hendo has heavy hands. hendo likes to stand and bang wich hurts him sometimes. if he takes silva down early sivla could submit him if he stands and bangs its a toss up because hendos tough chin and heavy hands. don’t know if silva has the stanima to hang in there but i think we will find out. i don’t think its going to be a quick fight. if they stand the whole time then silva wins by decision if he doesn’t get knocked out in the early rounds. if it goes to the ground then hendo wins in a decision if he doesn’t get submited in the early rounds.

I think Henderson is going to humiliate Silva. 1st round knockout from full mount.
Has Henderson ever even won a fight by GnP? He’s a brawler, that’s it. He’s no Matt Hughes on the ground.

Even though Gsp is a high caliber type striker.he is still is not on the same level as a Anderson Silva. His best bet would be wreslting. If wants to stand with Silva it would Serra/Gsp part1 Crhis Leben/Silva all over again.

I can’t see Dan loosing, exept maybe if Silva carries a gun in the octagon.Henderson’s chin is second to none, his strenght is amazing and his wrestling can compare only to Randy’s greco roman skills. He beat a sick Wanderlei Silva, which is as good as beating a healthy Anderson Silva[ yes i am saying Wandy is better than Anderson].Come on, Travis Lutter had him before switching for that silly armbar. This is a sure bet.

Umm first off how can you compare anderson silvas straight beautifullly technical striking with vanderlais brawling style of muay thai.???
Not even close to comparison..anderson is more accurate and travis lutter is a lot more technical than dan ever will be with his submissions and groundwork. the clinch is where alo of this fight will probly happen but i dont see it being a fun experience for henderson….i see him getting cut up and beaten on.

Oh, that reminds me of something. LOST is starting back up on January 31st, but due to the writers strike, there are only going to be 8 episodes. John, do you watch Lost?
Also, the only Law and Order I watch is SVU, and new episodes of that return tonight!
I really hope that TO doesn’t play and Romo feels the playoff pressure. My main concern is that I don’t know how many consecutive great games Eli has in him. That is 2 great games in a row already (Pats and Bucs). He still needs 2 more near perfect games to make it to the SuperBowl and rematch the Patriots.

We all have our opinions on Dan & Anderson, Heres mine. I totally believe Dan won’t get out of round 3. The best striker in the world is gonna wreck Dan too.Plus I’m pretty sure the Nogeira brothers are’nt just giving out those black belts.Jab jab jab….BOOM. Now Dans hurt, We all know how much slack Anderson gives when he sees you hurt.I know Dans never been KO’d, But Anderson is a completely different animal.I know Dan KO’d Wanderlai Silva, But the only thing Anderson and Wanderlai have in common is that they came from Chute box. Thats it!!! Dan says he wants to clinch with Anderson, We’ll see how he does when Anderson has that plumb grip around his head and the knees start coming!. Go get em CHAMP!!!
by Couch Champ on Jan 8, 2008 4:31 PM EST reply actions
Why does everyone subconsciously want the white guy to when all the time and act like Anderson is not the most dominating force in MMA? THe only way you guys would go for the brazilian is if they put a African American in front of him or you just wouldnt watch at all. Stop lying and trying to convince yourself otherwise…Silva is the best…oh yeah(karate kid)! Time and time again he is on top. He beat Franklin up overwhelming to the point that a rematch would be a joke and people still doubted Silva. If he beat God people would say that his next opponent has a good chance of winning! He can never prove himself to the doubters. So what he doesnt speak english this a WORLD class sport so drop the superiority complex. He is the most exciting MM Artist to watch and he is a great and gracious champ. He is a machine. He is deceiving in stature (constantly presenting a david and goliathesque bout). He is Maximus Decimus Meridius of the 21st century. ‘Are you not entertained?’ He is a smart tenacious fearless unstoppable fighter? He has tools that are light years ahead of his competitors. Don’t you see him playing with his opponents in the ring? Have you seen him when someone gets a good shot on him? He sees RED after that!! My only advice is to join now and hate later. He cant be stopped.
