UFC Quick Quote: Lyoto Machida wants to fight Chuck Liddell next

"I would like to fight with Chuck. It would be a exchanging fight, standing up all time, but who will decide this is the event."
-- Undefeated light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida tells Tatame.com that he wants a crack at former 205-pound champion, Chuck Liddell. The match up would make sense -- both fighters scored big wins at UFC 79: "Nemesis" on December 29 and are looking for an eventual title shot in late 2008.

I think this would be a bad match up. Machida is not going to try and keep it standing lets be serious here. He is going to suck them into thinking he will then lay and prey.

Machida should fight Anderson Silva next!

Good fight, Machida dealt with Sokoudjou’s power easily enough.
Would be brains vs brawn again… would prefer to see Shogun have a crack at Chuck personally.

You are out of your mind. No way, Chuck will KO Machida standing. Machida is very good standing, Machida will tear up Chuck piece by piece.

It’d be interesting seeing someone trying to get Chuck on the floor. Chuck by KO round 2 :)

Why would Chuck KO him, no one else has even hit him square, and Chuck has 0 KO’s his last 3 fights. It would be two counter punchers, probably go the distance…I would take Machida.

We all know Lyoto Machida is the badest around! He would kill anyone in the ring!even his good friend (spider says he wouldnt want to go against Lyoto)Machida will take him

Shogun needs a win in the UFC before he fights a guy like Chuck. Put him in there against Rashad.

I think this would be a boring fight. Chuck is a counter puncher and so is machida. Chuck is more willing to come forward but is more affective countering and when his oppenent does not come at him he will attack. Machida is content with running the whole fight and not taking any risks i think machida would win by very boring decision.

I dont see this being as a good fight. 2 Counter punchers going up against each other. And Machida trying to take chuck down? I think there are better match ups out there.

I dunno, this is a bad match up for Chuck….but I would have to say, I only see this ending with Machida getting his face busted up. Chuck may not KO him, but he will land shots and cause major damage, look at Wanderlei….that being said, I could see Machida winning via descision, because I cant see Chuck being submitted, he never has been, but I can see Machida losing, because he never has lost….

you cant compare wanderleis aggressive onslaught to machida, this is a guy who hasnt even been hit right yet, it would be a good fight to find out the result, but a boring 1… machida is a smooth operator

I think that Liddell and Machida would be a good fight I would buy to see that.. It would be a good stand up fight. I believe that should be on the same card as the Forrest and Jackson fight. it would make some money..

Wait a minute, you can’t call the guy a puss. He is probably the smartest fighter in the ufc, and he has definitely won every fight he has had. If winning makes you a puss, then i guess anderson silva is a puss too.

First off Machida doesnt lay and pray on anyone at what point did you see machida lay and pray against sokudju….He was constally passing the guard nearly locked up two kimuras and then eventually put soku to sleep with a crafty arm triangle
Chuck is ganna have hard time if this bout does materialize beause there both counter strikers and liddel will have to be the agressor, with lyoto is very elusive and the most teecnnically gifted 205 pounder, I can see machida geting lidell to the matt in the third round after two uneventful rouds and submitting the ice man, I am relly hoping this fight does happen

Machida could be the most underrated fighter in the UFC! I would not be at all surprised if he has the light heavyweight belt by the end of 2008! If he fights Chuck next it will be for a title shot. I think machida could fight jardine next for the next crack at Rampage/Forrest. Rashad Evans still in the mix, maybe he’ll fight Liddell

I dont think you really understand mma fighters very well. Machida has many ways he can beat chuck, and yes if machida wants to take chuck down he will take him down. Lyoto Machida will soon be the champ of the ufc, and pound for pound best fighter in the world. Of course not taking any props away from fedor or anderson silva though.

Has Machida’s chin ever even been really tested? It takes 1 clean over hand from Chuck, to put 95% of most fighters asleep. I think most of the fight is boring until Chuck puts him to sleep. The abuse that Wandy took was unreal and would have put most everyone else asleep…

Chuck lost to Jeremy Horn via arm triangle choke, the same way Machida finished Sokoudjou (Except Sokou tapped). Of course, that loss to Horn was back in early 1999 and the only way I really see Machida submitting Chuck is if he drops him with a punch or kick to get him on the ground- Machida has decent takedowns but he’s no Randy Couture.
As for this matchup, I could probably think of a couple other ways to work things out but this does make sense, as they both must be on their way to a title shot. I wish Forrest Griffin wasn’t fighting Rampage and I wish they weren’t waiting so long to make that happen- I still say that’s a god-awful decision. Forrest Griffin deserves Machida. In other words, Forrest Griffin deserves a beatdown. The guy puts on that crappy fight against Ramirez, then he gets freaking Shogun. Shogun fights like crap, and Griffin becomes a legend. Such a joke. I guarantee Forrest is not on his way up, he doesn’t belong with the names people are putting him up there with.
If Forrest gets injured, he should fight Machida and everyone will see what I’m talking about. If he doesn’t get injured, well, he’s going to lose to Rampage. I called Rampage over Henderson and I’m sure as hell calling Rampage over Forrest Griffin (laughs).
The top 10 LHWs (in no particular order) are:
Quinton Jackson
Wanderlei Silva
Chuck Liddell
Lyoto Machida
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Tito Ortiz
Ricardo Arona
Keith Jardine
Mauricio Rua
Until I see Griffin beat a healthy top 10 fighter, I say he’s fighting for the 11 or 12 spot with Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva.
I’d like to see Rashad fight Jardine, Tito Ortiz fight Wanderlei, Liddell fight Machida or Thiago Silva, Shogun fight whichever one Chuck doesn’t fight, and I’d like to see the UFC sign Minotoro!

A lot of you guys are meatheads! If you knew anything about MMA you’d know Machida knocked out Rich Franklin (former UFC Middleweight Champion), beat Stephon Bonnar (TUF 1 Finalist), and BJ Penn (Former UFC Welterweight Campion). He has a chance to beat Chuck. If this fight does happen I would not be suprised to see Chuck look the takedown! Who cares how it finishes, all that matters is who gets the win.
by sac,ca MMA on Jan 5, 2008 2:37 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
If they’re going to have the unbeaten fighters fight each other, it should be Machida vs. Thiago Silva, they’re both actually unbeaten, Rashad has lost his last two fights in my book, yet he is technically undefeated. Rashad hasn’t won every fight (he had the draw against Tito), but Machida and Silva have.
by skatanicus on Jan 5, 2008 2:43 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It would be an interesting matchup rather than an exciting one as both have a counterpunching style. I would give Machida the nod via decision and doubt that Chuck would be able to finish Machida and put together punches like he did against Wandy, because Machida is really difficult to exchange with. I wouldn’t mind seeing Machida against Thiago Silva with the winner getting a title shot after Forrest Griffin and Rampage fight. Other potential matchups are between Chuck, Houston Alexander, Sokoudjou, Shogun and Wandy to figure out the standings at LHW as well as a Rashad and Tito rematch once he’s finished with the Celebrity Apprentice.

Thiago Silva vs. Machida would be an awesome matchup. Two undefeated light heavyweights. The winner of that should get a matchup with Chuck for #1 contender. Shogun should fight Evans or Jardine. Sokodjou vs. Alexander, that would be an exciting, yet not important fight. Tito should fight Wanderlai Silva. When is Rampage vs. Griffin? Bisping vs. Bonnar.

I say bring on Jardine/Machida or Thiago/Machida, Liddell vs Shogun would be WAY more exciting fight, considering shogun shows up in shape.
Also, I cant see Forrest getting by Rampage, Rampage is too strong and powerfull, but, Forrest is a tall guy with long limbs and he seems to always be in very good shape. Too bad we will have to wait until freakin August to see this damn fight!!!

This is how the 205 lb fighters should be paired up in there next fights:
Chuck vs. Shogun
Sokodjou vs. Alexander or Tito
Jardine vs. Machida
Rashad vs. Tiago Silva (I hear that this fight is close to being made official)
I would like to see wanderlei move down to middleweight and give him a warm up fight against Ed Herman or Bisping (but I doubt the UFC would feed Bisping to wanderlei because he is too important to the expansion into the UK)

Machida will beat Liddell the same way that Jardine did, except Machida will take less damage than Jardine. Machida is a very quick and accurate striker, and he has good punch defense. He will hit Liddell and move away for three rounds. He’s not going to stand there and exchange bombs like Silva, and I seriously doubt that he will try to take Chuck to the ground. But machida performance in my mind was absolute garbage. Machida should be fighting untelevised fights. Okami, tim silva same deal. Besides it only takes chuck one punch to knock someone out. If machida would fight chuck i would say chuck wins 2nd round TKO/KO. As far as it being on the ground the only way that fight would go to the ground is if chuck wants it there. Ask randy.

Machida would give Chuck problems. I’d like to see Fitch fight Koschek (but it will never happen since they are great friends). I do think that Fitch will get a title shot by the end of the year.

Your list is pretty good except I would swap Dan Henderson for Tito and Forrest Griffin for Big Nog, since he is a heavyweight, not LHW:
The top 10 LHWs (in no particular order) are:
Quinton Jackson
Wanderlei Silva
Chuck Liddell
Lyoto Machida
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Tito Ortiz
Ricardo Arona
Keith Jardine
Mauricio Rua
I like Tito, but he is done. He barely beat Forrest, many people say he lost. He wasn’t even impressive against Rashad, and he should have destroyed him if he was top 10 material. Where is Dan Henderson? He did beat Wandy??? Nog is Heavyweight.

Machida’s allowed to tell us who he wants to fight, even if he’s fighting someone else.ÂÂ Hughes did the same thing with Serra and GSP.
If Machida is fighting Tito next, I think T. Silva should be next for Chuck. Houston, Soko and Shogun are coming off of hype-killing losses, he just fought Wandy and Jardine, and Rampage and Forrest are tied up with TUF. The only top guys left for him are T. Silva and Rashad, and out of the two of them T. Silva is the better fight imo.ÂÂ
He may sit out this round of fights and take on the winner of another fight though. I think he said he wants to fight in May, which might be enough time for him to fight a guy who fights in March or earlier.

if the ortiz/machida fight is true then:
machida vs ortiz
liddell vs evans
thiago silva vs stephan bonnar
wandi should move down to 185
shogun moves down to 185
by COR on Jan 6, 2008 2:41 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
i bet tito wont take that fight. he’d rather take on wandi (again) or shogun. he matches up so much better with them than machida. wandi, shogun, and machida are all small light heavy’s but machida is by far the quickest and hes on fire right now. plus wandi and shogun have bigger names than machida.
by COR on Jan 6, 2008 2:46 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
i like the sound of liddell vs evans, and if liddell wins(which he should) he calls out rashads butt buddy keith jardine and then that rematch happens.
if he fights machida= 2 scenarios
1.chuck liddell tries to throw bobmbs with machida and machida who is so talented and who is very quick and smart taps and runs foor a decision.
2.chuck comes in confident and does his chuck liddell thing like we all love when he does and kills machida with huge shots.(i would actually like to see him rock him once let machida recover then do it again and finish him.) if chuck does win that fight then he should fight a really highly regarded #1 contender at that time.maybe jardine if he wins one more big one or thiago
liddell fights shogun= i fight i really dont care to see and i think he may win but would ruin him if he loses

I don’t even know where some of you are getting that.
Machida by decision.
He’s not that good yet

The top 10 LHWs (in no particular order) are:
Quinton Jackson
Wanderlei Silva
Chuck Liddell
Lyoto Machida
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Tito Ortiz
Ricardo Arona
Keith Jardine
Mauricio RuaUntil I see Griffin beat a healthy top 10 fighter, I say he’s fighting for the 11 or 12 spot with Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva.
I’d like to see Rashad fight Jardine, Tito Ortiz fight Wanderlei, Liddell fight Machida or Thiago Silva, Shogun fight whichever one Chuck doesn’t fight, and I’d like to see the UFC sign Minotoro!
-Should Sokodoujo really be in the top 10? He is good but of his last 4 he has lost 2 one to Machida and one to a relative nobody in Glover TExiera! I like and think he will make a great impact eventually in this division but as of now he really is no different then Houston Alexander, 1 dimensional KO guy who has been exposed. I personally would take Tito and Sokodujo out and put Thiago Silva and Forrest Griffen in the 9 and 10 spot, Slide Hendo into the top 5 EVen Arona is suspect at top ten losing 3 of his last 5 granted two of them to Silva and Rua, but losses none the less. I do not think Minotoro belongs top 10 either his last fight against a ranked fighter was in 2005 against Dan Henderson which he won then lost 2 months later to Rua, has 1 win in 2006 against Allistair overeem, and another loss to Sokodujo in 2007. That is no way shape or form a top 10 anything.
Tito has more top 10 exposure then he Minotoro does and he is hardly top 10 worthy…

I think Machida would beat Chuck. Machida should be fighting Keith Jardine. After Jardines superb performance againsr Chuck he needs to have a bit more respect and wether Dana likes it or not put on a path leading towards a title fight. I think Jardine and Machida would be an excellent fight, but because of his lack of charisma and personality it seems like people want to forget about him. I’ve never had a problem with him. After his technical dispaly against Bonner which he definately won, I was very much impressed. His destruction of Forrest was even more impressive, and with his well thought out strategy of taking out Chuck, I had even more respect for him. I am not bothered what he is like out of the octogan, when he is in it, he always brings it.

Well let’s do a recap then of his unbeleivably exciting career in the ufc. First off I wasn’t saying he is a lay and pray fighter I was implying that he would against chuck. I couldn’t care less whether not he passes guard if he passes and then does nothing with it. I am sure you are aware being so knowledgable that lyoto has had 7 decisions and 5 finishes in his WHOLE CAREER. He is very talented you can’t deny that but he has only had two submission finishes with one of them against sokoujou who is extremly talented but still a little green, he has only had 5 fights in his career. He has beat top opponents but with his striking power, his ground game has yet to be properly tested other then the machida fight which he lost. He was judo wolrd title holder and with his strength and a little more ground work he will be more well rounded. Do you really think he will try to engage with chuck standing up? Yes he is a counter puncher but he backpedals alot thats why he has so many decisions, he never pushes the pace and finishes. Thats why I think his only chance is to get chuck down some how and lay and pray a few times WHETHER HE HAS DONE IT BEFORE OR NOT (pay attention here) to get this victory. WHy would he try to counter punch with one of the top counter punchers on the planet, you obviously will play to your own strenghts not your opponents.

They didn’t fight in Pride and won’t fight each other because they are good friends and trained at Chute Boxe in Brazil together. Shogun especially has said he would never fight Wandy because he looks up to him so much.

I don`t think Shogun wants or has to drop to 185..Was for a minute ranked number 1 at 205 over Page..which he gave the worst beating I`ve seen a fighter gets. He beat some top LHW fighters and some heavy weights..granted he lost his ufc debut..but he should have some fights before doing the Sanchez-Swick.

I agree 100% and i think this fight should happen winner geting title shot.
I think that Machida would methodically pick Chuck apart. Chuck would definitely inflict more damage than anyone has but in the end I see Machida with the victory.

Machida may be boring to some? but can’t you see Machida has a unique systems that can overcome your typical fighters or powerful guy like Sokodjou. MMA is not Boxing or Kick boxing…power against power, what’s the point of getting your head smash in….you can end-up with brain damages went get older or in your retirement.
A smart fighter should avoid getting hit, too many punches will do you no good in the long term.
I can’t see anyone beating Machida in the next year or so, unless someone can come up with a different approach or create a unique fighting style that can overcome Machida’s.
I know why UFC/Dana won’t give Machida a tittle shot, is because they know the outcome of (Jackson Vs Machida)??? Rampage might be stronger but I bet you his a lot slower.

say lets do it.i would love to see Chuck beat the hell out of Machida.I cant stand Machida’s fighting style.peck and run, peck and run, peck and run.his is boring and a puss.I’v only seen one fight that was decent and thats when he ko-ed Franklin
Id love for you to stand face to face with him and have the courage to say that! It doesnt matter what his fighting style is, he has shown that he can knockout the best of fighters, submit them, avoid being hurt and is a great thinker. I think Liddell would struggle with this one because he would be looking for the big overhand punch but Machida would be too smart and would duck out the way easily. What would Liddells ground game be like against Machidas? I really think he would struggle with it. Machida for me would win this one.

Ken shamrock was prepared to fight his own flesh and blood if he had to, to get another fight. Now wandy has moved his training away from chute boxe as have the Rua brothers i think this is the chance to bring the fight.
Hypathetically speaking, if this fight happened which way would you put it?. . . . Shogun 2nd via submission

Machida is a boring ass fighter i cant belive he had the nerve to ask for a tittle. Someone that boring and not commited to take any punishment would suck as champion. His fight wiht soku sucked!!!!!!!!ALL HE DOES IS RUN.
Running away, i have never seen lyoto run away, oh you mean back peddling and avoiding damage like counter striker. I think tito actually ran away when he was fighting wandy back in the day, now that is running away. HIs fight with soku was one of the best fights i have seen. Using that punch sweep combination to floor soku on his ass was great. Your using the same rehash that any other hater would post.

First of All Machida out of anyone deserves to fight someone that will give him that Title shot… the guy is undefeated and that include some of the top fighters in the UFC today.
Machida is a tough opponent for anyone because of his fighting style. It’s hard to train for someone that fights an unpredictable fight all the time…
Liddle VS Shogun would be a war if we get to see the shogun of Pride rather than the shogun that showed up against Forrest.
Michida VS Ortiz would be a waste of talent and time..

All of you have to learn that UFC is more business than quality of fighters.
While Forrest griffin, rampage and Vera say they want nothing to do with Machida is obvious . They now who the guy is… for those who dont know… go to you tube
check Machida destroying FRANKLIN, BONNAR, BJ PEN, ORTIZ, SOKOJOU, MC DONALD, GRECCO, VERNON…THIS GUY IS ALREADY THE BEST ON 205 DIVIISON . HIS RECORD SAYS IT ALL DANNA WHITE KNOWS THAT … BUT HE IS A BRAZILIAN THAT BRINGS NO AUDIENCE FOR UFC… SO HE WILL WOON PROBABLY GO TO AFFLICTION OR SOMEWHERE ELSE… GRIFFIN… IS THE BIGGEST JOKE EVER… LOST TO TITO , JARDINE, RAMPAGE KNOCK HIM LIKE 3 TIMES … BUT HE IS GOOD BUSINES .
FORREST RANKS …NOT AMONG THE TOP 5 BEST THAT IS FOR SURE…
