The MMA evolution of UFC heavyweight Brock Lesnar (Video)

brock lesnar

It's safe to say that the first time Brock Lesnar enters the Octagon on SuperBowl weekend that it will be one of the most intriguing storylines in the sport to begin 2008.

Sure, he's already got one professional fight under his belt. But how will he fare against top competition?

For what it's worth Lesnar seems realistic and not overly confident that his transition from professional wrestling to mixed martial arts is going to be easy in a recent interview with SportsNet.ca.

He seems to be saying all the right things.

We'll find out in less than two months when he takes on former heavyweight champion and grappling specialist, Frank Mir, at UFC 81 : "Breaking Point" on February 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For the most recent rumored fight card click here.

Thales vs Nate..looking forward to that one..the return of Big Dog Almeida..This is not a weak card but not a very strong one either.

If the ufc would of absorbed 80/81 together..now then you have a strong card.

Tim vs Nog (Hw title)

BJ vs Stevenson (LW title)

Gonzaga vs Fabricio

Mir vs Lesnar

etc…

Brock Lesnar takes MMA very seriously. He has a superb wrestling game, and he seems to have vicious ground and pound.

People knock him for being a pro wrestler, but look over in Japan, you see Bob Sapp, Mirko Cro Cop, Josh Barnett amungust many other fighters that have or currently wrestle, so knocking him is not right.

Brock has a lot of potential, lets just hope he fills it.

Thales vs. Nate might be the best fight on the card. I like Leites in an upset. I am very excited about the Big Dogs return to the UFC…He will submit belcher for sure. Almeida is one of my favorite fighters to come out of the gracie family.

I like Brock’s attitude, He has been training seriously. he seems to have left his ego at the door. He may be the most Physically gifted heavyweights. It was good to see him work his submission game, more important is his submission defense, which needs to be sharp in order to beat Mir. Brock should watch Fedor vs. Noguerra at PRIDE Body blow. That fight shows how Big powerful guys get out of ju jitsu. Every time Big Nog grabed an arm, Fedor just yanked it out. Brock will have the power advantage to implement this strategy. I cant call this fight, but I am very interested.

You are absolutely right. Combine the 2 cards and you would get a worthy Superbowl weekend card. I might not even purchase the next 2 pay per views. The 1st one is at 3 in the afternoon (I will prolly go watch it at hooters and have a late lunch) UFC 81 features a boring championship match and a match involving a guy who’s record is 1,0………An event sucks when you are more excited about he undercard then the main events.

i say good luck to the guy – this is a cool fight where i couldnt put any money on any of the guys – just havnt got a clue how its gonna pan out – but id go for – lesnar rushs in there – mir keeps his cool and takes off a limb – mir is shite against strikers but should be hot against any wrestler

This is a tough fight for Mir. He has to fight someone who is very new to the game and obviously has something to prove. Lesnar looks like a monster on the ground. I’m not saying Mir is going to get his ass kicked…it’s just that he’s fighting the unknown – you know? Cheers.

Also, I keep hearing a crazy rumor that EliteXC will have this crazy 4 man tournament featuring Bob Sapp, Kimbo, Tank, Butterbean…….I doubt that this rumor is true, but it would be entertaining, featuring as little mma as possible. Out of the 4 fighters Tank would be the best mma fighter. Can you imagine Tank going for Omo plata’s againts Bob Sapp? Priceless!!!!!

I never thought that I would be rooting for a professional wrestler in a UFC fight. But then again, I never even thought that I would see a professional wrestler in the UFC. I think that this is one of the most intersting HW matchups in a while. The match really can end in any possible way, except for Lesnar winning by submission – can you imagine if he submitted Mir?

Brock Lesnar’s problem is that he is most comfortable using his wrestling background and taking his opponent down to the ground. From here he isn’t going to look for a submission. He is just going to try an inflict brutal GnP. However, when I think of where Frank Mir is most dangerous, it may very well be off of his back. So where Lesnar is most comfortable, Mir is most dangerous. However, like I have said, and John mentioned above, Brock Lesnar is extremely powerful and should be able to power out of most submissions – BUT not all of them.

Does anyone else think that the line on this fight is completely off. I can’t comprehend how a 1-0 guy coming into UFC for the first time to fight an ex-Champ is a favorite. Are the out of their minds? This is all TV hype. since people know his name than he must be a great fighter.
He might barely be a fave against Eddie Sanchez or Hardonk, but come on vs Mir?…he will lock something up on Lesnar from the top or bottom. I think this might be a great bet, especially with those odds.

The odds the sport book puts out are only a reflection of the betting publics opinion. They simply want an equal amount of money bet on both side of the fight. That way they are garunteed to make money. So to answer your question “are they out of their minds?” No, but if you see that line move substantially in one direction or the other you will know that they misjudged the betting public’s opinion of this fight.

I’m very fluent in Portugese..I read and write..I’m spelling just may not be on point..either is my english..but I have a problem with the link..I’ll try it in a few. I think Kimbo has the advantedge..by bit. but it would be very entertaining.

I like what the IFL is doing in reconstructing their season..and having camp vs camp..and any outside fighter can put a team together and fight a IFC affliated team.

If you think that the lines are crazy to be a certain way, in theory wouldn’t that make you crazy if you didnt go bet a lot of money on Mir? Sell your house and bet it all on the ex-champ motorcycle rehab victim.

Stop being an idiot. What the hell does being a pro wrestler have anything to do with how you fight? Wrestling is acting. Rich Franklin uses a gun in the movie he’s filming, might he bring a gun out to his next fight?

I can’t believe the UFC gave him this matchup right at the start of his career. I thought for sure they would just find some 250-pound punching bag to take a beating for $3000 instead of giving him a guy who can tear his limbs apart.

you sound bitter…must be a wrestling fan. I didn’t say it was the lock of the year, but I do think that Lesnar’s popularity from wrestling is falsely raising his stock as a fighter. I am also not saying that he can’t beat Mir or that he can’t become a champ, but being 1-0 against a can shouldn’t make you a fave unless you got hype and a TV name.

I can definately see the F-5 work. He can easily lift any guy up on his back. That’s the easy part. Completing the full rotation would be the best move ever in the UFC if he can actually do it against a guy fighting against it.

he should fight at 185 when he’s not on roids. just kidding, who really knows if he and shogun roided up (although it certainly appears that way). the fact is that he looked pretty small against chuck. id love for him to battle it out at 185. put him in there with franklin, okami, or mcdonald.

I really like Mir a lot better, adn feel bad about his situation, he was on top, had a freak moto accident, adn has struggled since, I hope his last fight(quick sub) means he is back to his old form, if he is, I think the old Mir could come up and take teh belt again.

Brock is going to get beaten by Mir. My tip is he may get a takedown and Mir will submit him from his back. Or Mir will punch his lights out.

Go Mir.

Question for everyone. Which is more exciting to watch?

1) Lesnar vs. Mir
2) 2 gorilla’s wrestling at the zoo
3) 1 and 2 are the same

hmmm….

I first thought this would be a sure win for Mir but the more I think about it, Lesnar has got a chance. I think he will come out fast and try take Mir down and just ground and pound like he did in his first fight. I dont know how good his stand up game is but someone of his size must have quite a vicious punch.
Mir is very experienced though and with his ground game being considerably better I think he will still win. I dont know how good Lesnars stamina is for such a big man so he may gas in the later rounds.
Hopefully it wont just be Lesnar taking Mir down and nothing happening on the ground.

I take this comment back. If anyone is going to gas its Mir. Just looking at his physique right now, he just isnt the fighter he use to be, but still my bet on the fight.
