Yarennoka!: 'Fedor Returns' New Year's Eve show results (UPDATE)
No rest for weary MMA fans.
If UFC 79: "Nemesis" and the IFL Grand Prix Finals didn't quench your thirst for combat sports this weekend then there's still more to come.
Yarennoka! — also known as "Fedor Returns" -- will be broadcast live on the HDNet network at 6 a.m. ET on Monday, December 31. It's super early, however, there's no excuse not to set the DVR today if you receive the HDNet network.
The New Year's Eve show will take place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Pride FC Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko will headline the show against the gigantic Korean, Hong Man Choi.
The rest of the card is filled with a nice line up of fights, which would have been made even better if Gesias "JZ Calvan" Calvancante was going up against Aoki as originally thought.
Regardless, there are some great fighters competing on this card. Catch it if you can.
Update: Results are in -- click the jump below to get the skinny.
In shocking news (sarcasm), Fedor Emelianenko defeated Hong Man Choi via submission (armbar) in round one. By all accounts it seemed rather easy as expected.
Here are the rest of the results:
Shin'ya Aoki defeated Bu-Kyung Jung via unanimous decision
Hayato "Mach" Sakurai defeated Hidehiko Hasegawa via unanimous decision
Kazuo Misaki defeated Yoshihiro Akiyama via technical knockout (strikes) in round one
Mitsuhiro Ishida defeats Gilbert Melendez via unanimous decision
Makoto Takimoto defeated Murilo Bustamante via split decision
Tatsuya Kawajiri defeated Luiz Azeredo via unanimous decision
Mike Russow defeated Roman Zentsov via submission (armbar) in round one
Thanks to Sherdog.com for the up-to-date results.

I’m the first! The only fight that I have any interest in for that line up is the Fedor fight.

I actually thought about getting this HDnet thing… just to see this fight. Then it hit me…why is Fedor not fighting Randy… forget it.. I’ll check the funny pages to see who won. What a Joke.

Fedor is still the best fighter in the world. He’s 6 foot 224 and beats up much bigger fighters. Zulu, sam shultz and soon to be this guy.
P.S. Dana’s cheap.

yeah, but these fighters are a joke, just look at their records, maybe fedor should fight giant silva next lol. anyhow, i still feel that fedor IS NUMBER ONE, it’s just too bad he won’t remain number one because he won’t be fighting ppl with much skills. Maybe if they give him antonio silva, then it should be interesting, or barnett. but I still think randy is a punk for not fulfilling his contract either, both fighters are in the wrong here, not just fedor. I’ll download this card, can’t watch it here in brazil :(

UFC isnt the only mma company out there, if u guys havent noticed. This event is as close to PRIDE as it gets and has some quality fights on its card featuring many mma fighters who could make noise in the UFC like Shinya Akoi, Gilbert Melendez, Murilo Bustamante (former UFC LHW champion), Kawajiri, Mach Sakurai, luiz Azeredo, Ishida and Akiyama. Fedor maybe fighting a can, but how can u really tell? Fedor has made everyone he has ever fought look like a can, so in this upcomming fight will anyone be able to tell the difference between Hong Man Choi and Noguerra? No, because all opponents look the same when Fedor is on top Mauling them with his World Class ground n Pound.
To just dismiss this card and call it “minor league” or compare it to arena football just shows your mma ignorance.
To be honest, as an overall card this is much better then UFC 79 which would have been better if they only televised the Wand/Liddell and GSP/Hughes fights and didnt waste my time with that other crap, they tried to sell me as fights!

An open note to my Korean Brother from Another Mother, Choi Hong Man:
Dude – Please. You’re taller than my aunt standing on top of my mother. You kinda stand out. You don’t need the bleached hair. Leave the meshuggah haircuts for people like Tim Silva, and Heath Herring. Bad enough we gots to deal with Lil Kim Jong-Il, but now we have to have you looking like a mugatu?
Peace out, my brotha. And lay Fedor out with some Hadoken Kimchee farts, eh?

Lets not forget the K-1 Dynamite event airing the same night as the Yakenora event. Notable fighters include Kid Yamamoto, Kazushi Sakuraba, Joachim Hansen, Kiyoshi Tamura, Bob Sapp, and Zulu. Too bad they are not airing this event besides in Asia countries. This card is not too shabby.
Fight Order:

2. U-18 tournament: Kenji Kubo vs. Yudai
3. HERO’s 70 kg: Kazuyuki Miyata vs. Joachim Hansen
4. HERO’s 85 kg: Melvin Manhoef vs. Yosuke Nishijima
5. HERO’s MMA: Minowaman vs. Zulu
6. HERO’s MMA: Kiyoshi Tamura vs. Hideo Tokoro
7. U-18 tournament finals

This fight isn’t really fair anyways. Choi probably weighs close to 400 pounds. I wont really hold it against Fedor if he loses. If Fedor does happen to win, I dont think there is anyone left skill wise except in the UFC, so they will have to find more freak shows for him to fight to keep it entertaining.

Beating, big ,slow, uncordinated and UNSKILLED fighters is NOT what it takes to wear the badge of #1HW in the world. Recently beating guys, who have recently earned the position of, “top HWs” (did i mention recently, you can’t be #1 on past glory) is how you get crowned, “the best”. Unfortunatly for us fans, Fedor seems to shun such guys lately.

i really hope fedor wins, and keeps wining until couture gets out of his contract and finally has the chance to show who the true champion is, a win which would rival any other win in mma, a win which would showcase randy schooling fedor, allowing couture to retire with grace and go down as the greatest of all time instead of going out with the current situation tarnishing his career, a fitting end to the ali of mma!!

Fedor fans give as many excuses as Liddell Fans do. Its that way with everything, you stick up for what you believe in. To say that people shouldn’t is ignorant. It’s called being a fan.
With that aside, I think this fight is a joke. Choi is only a fighter because of his Acromegaly, he could get hurt badly as well.

I will agree with you that there are other great matches on this card, but be seious. The reason everyone is defecating on this promotion is the absolute joke of a headline fight this is. The UFC equivilent of this would be like andy Couture or Tim Sylvia fighting that Sao Palelei for the vacant title. IT is a joke and they have made a mockery of their pomotion by outting this fight as a headliner. The only sad excuse is is not the MMA fans here but the promotion that would try to bill this as a legitimate Headliner match. Lets be serious if Dana White try to sell you Tim Sylvia vs Sao Palelei as a legitimate headliner @ $39.99 you would espond the same way regardless of the undercards. Like you said there are most definitly some great undercards on this bill but when your money fight is Fedor vs. an MMA unknown with only 2 fights it cheapens the sport, the card, and the promotion in geneal, as well as insults the intelligence of us MMA fans.

Fedor charges in and tries a take down but it was the Choi who came out the better. Fedor tries an armbar but Choi fought out and jabbed Fedor with some right hands. Fedor’s face is getting red from the jabs but he pounds Choi with a hard left and is again taken down. Fedor tries for an armbar. He’s got it really deep and Choi taps out. Quick but exciting win for Fedor. The fight finished in just under 2 minute. Look for fight Video later today. Will have it up as soon a possible.

Watched the fight, nice execution, and transition into the arm bar… but who gives a crap? If the guy had any skill what so ever, he would not have gotten caught in it at all (but he did twice). So what if Fedor submitted a guy with one MMA fight and no BJJ skills. Yes a guy of his size can pose problems, but I would put skill, and experiance against size and strength any day. That is the whole point of BJJ afterall.
Anyone considering Fedor #1 pound for pound or even #1 HW anymore with out him facing any decent competition is just a hugger if you ask me. He is a great fighter, but he needs to fight great fighters to remain on anyones list.

the watering down of PRIDE fighters in the UFC (which speaks directly to the legitimacy of his record) and his lack of competition should drop him down almost anyone’s list as far as pound for pound, in my opinion.

However, nice one by Fedor!!!! and bad for Roman losing his fight…

It’s really hard to tell just how current Fedor is when the only comparison available is no comparison at all. It think Tim Sylvia is the biggest fighter in the western hemesphere, but even he looks puny to Hong Man Choi. This guy is mammath.
Anyway…
Fedor didn’t show me anything that made me think any differently then i already do. He’s good over there, if he comes to the UFC he will get trounced. I know Choi is huge but you should have seen Fedor collapse under his weight in the clinch… no resitance… Choi landed some shots that werent overly impressive and Fedor showed BIG damage.
I think Tim or Randy or could open him up and possibly end the fight with a cut with very little trouble.
It was a nice armbar… but Choi should never have fallen into it. Fedor was telegraphing like and amatuer and even missed a couple of attempts. Nobody in the top 10 HW will allow Fedor that luxury. His best opponent is Nog and
Nog is going to lose to Tim, Tim will be ready like never before for this fight. Nogs only UFC gig was against Herring who was a Pride opponent. I like Nog better then Tim actually, i just see Tim finally getting that KO he is always talking about.
UFC just needs to have the Randy/Fedor fight. No title as Randy has now given that up…. but let them fight for the legacy. It’s going to happen with or without the UFC/ It’s best for the UFC and the fans if it’s properly promoted.

I love how much people bash Fedor. I’m not sure if this is because he didn’t sign with the UFC, or just got too popular for a bit there.
And this fight obviously wasn’t Fedor VS BJJ Expert, it was a fight that was to draw up interest and no less.
I really wish Fedor would have signed up, we would have one more good fighter to watch, and the haters would stop. Probly not, there is always time to trash talk in between writing about how amazing Chuck Liddell is.

Fedor’s face was a mess. Any top UFC HW would open him up no probs.
I agree. Anybody with a half decent clinch would destroy his face with a couple sharp elbows. Fedor is an awesome fighter, but he cuts way too easy. Randy wouldn’t have any problem opening up Fedor. Look at what he did to Gonzaga.

I really don’t think that people hate Fedor. I for one, love watching him fight, (REAL fighters). We’re just sick of listening how he is the best, when he has only fought cans in the last couple of years. Some of us realize the fact that Fedor has desicion wins over guys who aren’t exactly tearing through the UFC fighters. When Tim beats Nog it will only add to the fact that Fedor WAS a big fish in a SMALLER pond. The ONLY way Fedor can be concidered the best, is to come to the UFC and beats guys like GG, Vera , Sylvia ,AA or a least beat Randy, because these are the top HWS and Fedor has beaten NONE of them.

UFc 79’s low cards did fight but to say M-1 is on par with Pride or UFC isnt close to the truth. Pride was known for their best fighters being Dan Henderson, Wanderlei Silva, Mirko Cro Cop, Big Nog, and Fedor. Other than Fedor, all these fighters have had a tough transition into the UFC making it seem like UFC has had the toughest compeition in the world. I’m not saying anything stupid like UFC was better than Pride but what separated them is Pride had like 8 big name fighters that they always fought nobodies and occasionally each other. UFC doesnt market themselves that way and makes sure the top guys and getting fighters that might beat them.
Also to say Big Nog and Hong Choi is actually MMA ignorance as Big Nog did way better against Fedor and has won almost all his fights but to Fedor. You are obviously are to busy kissing Fedor’s * to see that he is fighting low card guys now and soon wont be considered the best. If he joined UFC, I think he would dominate the Heavyweight division but he would still have a lose or two just because the level of competition and style match ups are to well stacked to never lose

Hankd… thought that too. Originaly. I DVR’d it because i wasn’t getting up to Japanese time. I’ve watched the fight a few times today, Fedor seemed to attempt some take down"esq
kind of move and Choi shifts his weight and Fedor just crumbles.
I know i read Fedor game plan was take down Choi and not let him up. So Fedor being on his back so quickly looked like Hong Man Choi offence to me. I think the judges would agree.
Im just calling as i see it. Fedor looks weak when compared to anytop UFC fighter. I would like to see Cro Cop go back to Japan to see how well he “bounces back” that will answer some questions because Sokoujduo performance is only strengthening others and my own opinion of how Fedor stakes up internationally.

Do all of the regular PRO Fedor guys on here not think it’s about bloody time he fights somebody of stature by now?
You can’t hold onto a Superbowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, or PGA Championship etc etc without defending it in consecutive years.
This isn’t the Olympics where it’s every four years. This is just me… i know, not worth a great deal… every fighter gets points. You win, you get 50 points. You lose you get 10. Follow me now, this is just an example.
Fedor hasn’t slid from the top ranks because he’s lost, he has simply been inactive. So in my opinion, as my example suggest he has been gaining no points when even HW that have fought and lost are creeping up 10 points at a time.
You can only be the best when you beat the best, and as more and more PPV go by, Fedor seems to be less threatning.
I could be wrong, but if given the choice today, i would take Fedor over Randy in a fight if i had too… if i had too.

Akiyama… I feel for you guy. Doesnt matter I will continue to be a fan.
Fedor… Com’on man do whats right and buy your competiton or… Align with IFL and set your own team up.
NOG WILL NOT BEAT TIM, Nog is tough but he will not win…
Fedor would have to either beat Tim Silvia to keep his potential for being #1 in the world. I am quickly losing interest in the guy. (I would say he would beat Vera and GG and probably beat AA) I think the LHW would give some of the HW headaches. Imagine Rampage vs Kongo, Silva vs AA, Henderson vs Vera, Griffen vs Cro-cop,Liddel vs Werdum.
Of course match-ups make the game better for the LHW. There would definitly be some upsets (Weight wise) Cro-cop cant seem to handle any supper aggro fighter that will push him to retreating and has any amount of ground game (so hes in a heap of trouble with the top LHW.
I wonder how Chuck vs Cro-cop would go… Chuck likes to be retreating and cro-cop likes to advance. Each would be in the zone game wise and strategy. and neither wants the ground game. HMMMMMMMMMMMMM… Give chuck maybe 40% to win but then again chuck would likly switch gears and go for the ko once he had cro-cop wobbly.
(the only ones in HW I wouldnt know who to match up with LHW would be Lesnar, GG and Silvia) Size wise the lhw would give too much muscle up. Think about it RC was a LHW and retired only to comeback and claim a hw title. Now hes getting out of the game cause he sees Lesnar coming… I only hope Lesnar lives up to the HYPE.

What on Earth makes you think Nog will beat Tim. When you combine Tim’s reach/size/take down defense with Nog’s extremely lack luster debut I have a hard time believing he’ll win.
I mean seriously, the only pride guy doing well in the UFC is Rampage.
Also, Fedor looked more out of shape than Karo at UFC 78

Man, Fedor is a bad man beating up a giant with all that professional fight experience. On top of that, he beat up a man that raps. Wow! Securing an arm bar on a guy that was like 1-0, how many guys could do that?
I can. Piece of piss….No seriously as inexperienced as Choi is I was a little worried when he was in top position. I thought he could have just pinned Fedor down and smothered him for the whole fight. As soon as he postured up Fedor saw the openings. The only surprise was he didn’t nail the sub first time.

the only thing i was thinking while watching the main event besides, wow this fight is so stupid, is why did dana and the ufc not have a ufc event in japan after the pide acquisition.
first, it couldve made alot of money. the fans are obviously educated and hungry for mma. the market is already developed, thats how m1 (an unkown) put together a fight in what 1.5 months, and had over 20,000 fans attend.
second, the ufc couldve totally marketed the event by promising to take care of the japanese mma fans by giving them access to the best fights. if i was a mma fan in japan, i would be irate with the ufc by now. the ufc goes in, buys pride and then just shuts it down and locks the door, leaving both fighter and fans in limbo. i would be soo pissed if pride wouldve done that to the ufc a few years ago.
i just dont get it. i thought dana wanted to make the ufc an international sport. that way he could earn even bigger bucks. yes he could try to have a ufc event in mexico or canada which would be great too, but he should have one in japan. there is so little risk.

I would go as far as saying if Fedor came to the UFC he would stuggle with Gonzaga and Vera/ I think Gonzaga(who happens to be my favorite UFC rising star) would cut through Fedor with elative ease, He has a super sharp and crisp jab, power in the leg for a KO, great ground and pound(sharp elbows), amd great submissions. All that talent and add on size, strength, and tenacity. I think Fedor loses to Gonzaga.

I think I may have been but still doesn’t change the facts that Fedor has not had a real fight since 2005. Competition is what keeps you at the top. Who has fought better competition in the last 2 years, Gonzaga. I loved pide fighters trust me I know how it feels to see each one of the guys come over and get owned by UFC fighters. There is no competion. IF you believe Fedor has any real competition out there other then maybe Josh Barnett, you are crazy. You only get so far fighting guys who are 2-0 in MMA re: of how big he is. Fedor head was busted open before he hit the floo the first time. Gonzaga would never fall into the Armbar(to solid of a BJJ guy), wouldn’t run away from him like a Cro Cop, and would split his head open with the jab and the head kick(that crush CRo Cop and Boke andy’s Arm)…

I do not think Fedor has the hands that Couture has, which is how he beat Gonzaga. He beat Gonzaga with the Dirty Boxing game. Dirty boxing is Randy Couture, that is what has helped him get to that level. I think with his jabs, head kick, and submission skill FEdor would have a lot of trouble. I think Gonzaga could also get a cut win…
