UFC 79 weigh-in results for 'Nemesis'

UFC 79 weigh in results

The field of 20 fighters for UFC 79: "Nemesis" have all weighed-in this evening for the blockbuster pay-per-view (PPV) event tomorrow night from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For those who didn't catch the Internet broadcast we have the weigh-in results below.

Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva had a HEATED staredown. Toward the end Silva did a little head fake and the two fighters were separated immediately. Then Liddell flipped of Wanderlei and it caused some havoc on the stage.

Amazing. Totally sets the stage for a ridiculous brawl tomorrow night.

Anyway, here are the official results:

170 lbs.: Matt Hughes (170) vs. Georges St. Pierre (170)
205 lbs.: Chuck Liddell (204) vs. Wanderlei Silva (205)
Hvywt.: Eddie Sanchez (239) vs. Soa Palalei (262)
205 lbs.: Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (205) vs. Lyoto Machida (204)
155 lbs.: Rich Clementi (155) vs. Melvin Guillard (156)
205 lbs.: James Irvin (205) vs. Luis Cane (205)
155 lbs.: Manny Gamburyan (155) vs. Nate Mohr (155)
185 lbs.: Dean Lister (186) vs. Jordan Radev (185)
170 lbs.: Roan Carneiro (170) vs. Tony DeSouza (170)
155 lbs.: Doug Evans (154) vs. Mark Bocek (155)

The televised portion of the pay-per-view (PPV) event begins Saturday, December 29, at 10 p.m. ET. We will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card action at this time.

UFC 79 quick results, however, will begin to flow earlier than that here at MMAmania.com at about 8:00 p.m. ET with the prelim fights.

Tomorrow can't come soon enough -- see you then!

Damn Matt Hughes looked ripped. I don’t really care for him but I think he will pull off the upset.

by pUniSHment on Dec 28, 2007 7:18 PM EST reply actions

Did Chuck give Wanderlei the finger or was it some other sign? Wanderlei was obviously pissed. Chuck also looked pissed as he walked behind the stage.

chuck did flip off wandy but that was after a little bit of a fake head but by wandy. chuck looked intense i have not seen him like that since ufc 66. Chuck looked to be in top shape and motivated as hell. Chucks got his abs back and now he is going to get his winning ways back by early first round knockout. Guranteed

My picks are st pierre 3rd rd tko
I’m not sure about the liddell/silva fight but I’m going for Chuck.
I’m also going for Sokoudjou.
I hope guillard takes no loves head off.
other picks are-Palelei,cane,gamburyan,lister,desouza,bocek.
although Nate Mohr looks like a beast and Roan Carneiro could just overwhelm desouza like he almost did with fitch.

by Jesse Canadian MMA on Dec 28, 2007 7:24 PM EST reply actions

Haa..Tough crowd

Chuck didn’t even flinch when Wandy tried to punk him. After that, CH=huck flips the bird to Wandy and a little rush form Wandy stirs up a little riot on stage to stop the almost on- stage battle, betweek Chuck & Wandy.
Bith GSP and Huges looked calm.
Tommorow night is going to be great

wah :( so i can’t see it cuz no1 is telling me i can…….anyways

winning ways back by early first round knockout. Guranteed

by pUniSHment on Dec 28, 2007 7:27 PM EST reply actions

The top 2 main events are going to be intense, chuck is winning the mind games in my book I can see silva running at him and get KTFO. Gsp looked great too, he knows hughes is going to try to take him down and will expect it. This should be a great fight both guys are desperate this is an extremely important fight for both these guys.

Was it me or did Chuck not look good? He was lookin like an old man. I think he was getting booed too. You could tell he was getting pissed by it. Wandy looks like the warrior he always has been, ready to &!$% go! Going by Chuck’s interviews and how he looked tonight, I don’t think his mind is right. He doesn’t seem to have that confidence and swagger he used to. He can certainly catch Wandy with a shot and KO him, but I’m picking Wandy in this one. He definitely seems like he is much more mentally and physically prepared.

I´m pleasantly surprised that Chuck´s days with that guru of his seem to have paid off, but flipping off an opponent is nothing but unsportsmanlike, childish even. Yes,I know Wandy faked a head butt but hey, remember all those fake uppercuts and jabs that the fighters used to throw in the stare downs earlier? that head-butt was for show, the finger definately was not. Sorry, no love for the ice man.
speaking of No Love, if the guillard clementi fight goes the way I think it will, we will have Clementi in the second body bag to grace MMA history.

Who cares how “intense” Chuck looked. He can bring in a bag of dead puppies and it wont change the fact that Wanderlei is in a way better position for this fight.

Did anyone else see UFC all Access? Did you see the crazy things Wand was doing? Thats what shows how much Wand wants this fight, is Chuck willing to punish himself as much as Wand did? Nope. Chuck is more concerned with how many girls are going to be at his after party.

The priorities are different, and they seem to fall in favor of Wanderlei. Add that with intense training and everything else Wand has done, Chuck doesn’t stand a chance.

So he can make his “intense” faces in the mirror all he likes. He can browse itunes for the perfect entry song. One that shows how scary he is. He’s still going to lose.

by Squishy Dolphin on Dec 28, 2007 7:51 PM EST reply actions

First time watching the weigh in live.
Chuck Wandi staredown was intense. I think Chuck lost himself by sticking his finger at Wandi. Wandi probably planned the fake headbut but Chuck lost control of his emotions and ended up looking more like a kid in a playground then a professional fighter. Hatton did the same to Mayweather at their weigh in and Hatton’s mentality going into to the fight was questionable. If Silva keeps that in his head going in to the fight and goes straight for Chuck he could be playing into Chuck’s gameplan. Cant wait!

Naw, Chuck was fine in flipping Wandy off. Wandy wasn’t joking around and trying to make someone flinch in that manner is pretty disrespectful.

That staredown was INTENSE though. WAR WANDY!

My picks (7-2, last 2 UFCs):

Wandy
GSP
Sokoudjou
Manny
Clementi (the best betting upset, 200)
Irvin
The Hulk
Evans
Lister
Carnerio

In the latest “All Access” show Silva shows how he sometimes works out in a “hypoxic state” by breathing through a snorkel. I understand the idea that he is trying to make his cardiovascular system as efficient as possible, but it seems to me that he is also training himself to inhale through his mouth (which is not a good thing). Could Silva be “too smart for his own good?”

Wanderlei is in a better position? Coming from the ring to the Octagon, no Chute Boxe, new country, new fighting rules, are you delusional?

By watching his training session on MTV2 doesn’t make him the more disciplined or better trained fighter it just shows him working out, it was nothing special. As for both fighters and their priorities, they’re in the same place: They both have kids, both are training hard and they both want the belt. Chuck has the better position by the mere fact that he is well versed in the Octagon, knows the rules and I think is in a better place mentally.

As for girls at his after party, Chuck and most of the big time fighters in the UFC all have “after party’s” and it doesn’t play a role in the cage. I really don’t think that someone on Chuck’s staff planning a party is going to distract him, that’s why he’s a professional fighter.

Chuck is going to lay out Wandy in the first round, Chuck is in his head already!

I know that GSP is way too respectful and classy, but I think it would be hillarious if he spanked hughes like what Couture did to ortiz. And i’d also like to see Wandy break chuck’s middle finger.

Yeah he did, but Wanderlei was sich when he fought Hendo. I’m not taking anyhing away from Henderson, but Wanderlei would not have lossed if i weren’t for being sick.

Chuck was just letting Wandi know he is a big fan and thinks Wandi is #1. I haven’t been giving Chuck much of a chance in this one, but he looked like he was ready to start the banging this afternoon.

On a side note, Tony Desouza looks like a crazy recluse or an escaped mental patient with the beard and all that hair. That staredown was fairly intense also. I guess Carnairo was ready for anything though, because he had a breathe right strip over the bridge of his nose. I am not really sure what you need one of those for at a weigh in.

Parties dont play a role in the cage? Then Keith Jardine just whooped Chuck because he’s that good? Everyone falls, and when you get too cushy, like Chuck has, you tend to relax and get used to all the perks of being famous and at the top.

Wandi has to basically start all over in the UFC. He has to get his name out there and prove how good he is. Chuck already has enough people dangling from his dingleberries to work hard at it. He can walk into any club and have skanky women fall at his feet, and pretty soon he will be getting roles in low-budget action flicks, working on new ridiculous looking action figures and waiting for Pros VS Joes to call. His life is set either way. Wandi’s is not.

Yeah, and Wandy was sick during the fight. He was also at a disadvantage because much of his fights rely on the allowance of kicking and kneeing a downed opponent. That was not allowed because the fight was in Las Vegas, which is illegal by the NSAC. Wandy will be much more prepared for this upcoming fight, and will leave the octagon the winner.

Yeh your right, I wasnt given the play by play on every workout routine. Im making assumptions, and have yet to submit my evidence to Scotland Yard.

I am however confident in my decision based on the “stellar” performance Chuck gave Keith Jardine, and the “all out war” Chuck gave Rampage. We’ll see tomorrow how killer Chuck is, and if Wandi knocks him out, I’m sure we’ll hear the same excuses as when Rampage beat him, that Big John called it too early. Funny how respectful people are of Big John when he calls the match in their favor, when he goes against their little hero, he called it too soon.

I finally got to watch the weigh-ins. Wanderlei doesnt try to head butt chuck, he just moved his head forward real fast. If he were to move it further his nose would have touched Chuck face.

it was more like a “what?” kind of move. Seems to me, since Wanderlei walked in, smiling, throwing his cap, he was trying to put on a show. Happy he was there.

Then Chucklehead Liddell made a childish move and flipped him off. I wonder if the bird had the knuckles up or down. What a putz.

didnt rampage just beat hendo???

Yeah, page beat hendo after a five round war that could have gone either way in my book, and beat chuck after a few punches. Great analysis lol.

Wandy by KO!

Chucks going down!!!!!!

by CaptainAmerica1967 on Dec 29, 2007 7:49 AM EST reply actions

chuck did flip off wandy but that was after a little bit of a fake head but by wandy. chuck looked intense i have not seen him like that since ufc 66. Chuck looked to be in top shape and motivated as hell. Chucks got his abs back and now he is going to get his winning ways back by early first round knockout. Guranteed
So, you give your personal garantee do ya, so if i go place a bet on chuck winning in first round by knockout are you going to cover it, the one thing i garantee is that you cannot spell.(guranteed)
And just on the side i pick wandi to tko chuck in round one, this looks like a win win for me as you are coverin my chuck bet, i’ll take $100,000 on chuck by first round ko, i don’t want to be too greedy with your money, just in case you cannot garantee it.

LMAO….slagging off someone’s spelling and spelling it wrong themselves (Correct spelling guaranteed)

Is anyone concerned about GSP saying he had a bad Christmas? I want GSP to win so bad but concerned that the bad Christmas could be bad for his head. Does anyone know what the bad Christmas involved? This was a comment GSP made at the weigh-in

It seems to me that GSP is a little too wired and tight for this fight. Hughes looks relaxed, and he also looks leaner and more defined than he has in the last few fights. Hughes looks focussed and ready, and GSP seems nervous to me.
This is going to be a very different fight than the last one. Hughes is going to go in there with a game plan, and I don’t know that GSP will have an answer to that.
Hughes is winning this fight.

it’s interesting how Chuck puts on all his clothes before meeting w/ Wand face to face…and Wand takes off his shirt when Chuck goes to meet him. it looks like Wand’s saying he’s in much better condition…and his body is proof of it. and Chuck seems to be saying “don’t look at my gut” heheh.

Either that or he’s worried Wandi would pinch his nipples.

Dana also has a leering look, like he’s undressing the fighters. I imagine it makes them feel quite dirty.

I heard no excuses when Chuck lost to rampage, the only thing I heard him say about the fight was that and I quote “we went in he caught and I lost thats it.” When he faught Jardine the only thing he said about that fight was that he wished he had of trainined harder because in his mind that was a fight he should not have lost. These are not excuses. As far as big John calling a fight to early I have never seen him do that and most agree with him stopping the fight with Chuck and Rampage. I have a gut feeling Chuck will win but we will see tonight, he may not. either way I’m still a chuck fan.

Steve: Im with you on this one, Chuck looked old, and not is usual self mentally. If you compare the training footage between wandy n Chuck, there is NO WAY Chuck trained as hard as wanderlei did…..I expect to see the Best Wanderlei that we have ever seen and a declining Liddell

I also though that was interesting. I hope Wanderlei wins this fight. He rededicated his whole life to this fight and has been happy like a kid in a candy store since joining the ufc. i AM HAPPY TO SEE THAT THE CROWD AT THE WEIGH-INS GAVE HIM A REAL WARM RECEPTION………Lets hope wandy wins this fight, gets back on a winning track, and eventuially get a shot at Rampage’s title, after all he has Destroyed Rampage twice already.

Personally I think Hughes looks off. I don’t understand why he would bring up that he isn’t chasing paychecks. Regardless of Matt’s condition GSP is a bad match up for him.

I know there’s this hush hush over game plans but it’s pretty obvious whats going to happen. Hughes has stated over and over that he’s returning to his wrestling and grappling, GSP will strike from the outside and defend the takedown. Can GSP stay on his feet long enough to end the fight standing up? Their last fight was a good indication of that. GSP’s athleticism is what worries Hughes the most. We all know Matt can only eat soo many punches trying for a takedown. This fight could easily be equivalent to Anderson Silva-Rich Franklin 2.

Someone here said Chuck looked old when he was at the weigh inn…funny because I thought the same thing…does anyone else notice that he doesnt look that “jacked” like he used to? I’m not talking about abs or anything like that, but if you look at Chuck when he won against Randy the 1st and 2nd time, he looks jacked! and he never had ripped abs then either, in fact he had a bigger gut then than he does now, but he had HUGE forearms with veins pumping out and huge shoulders and neck….dont get me wrong he looks in GOOD shape, but I just think he doesnt look as “jacked” as he used to, and his legs looked much smaller to me at the weigh inn yesterday, I dont know what to think. He did look more focused this time around compared to the Keith Jardine weigh inn.

Ultimate fighter-

Dont point out spelling mistakes if you cant spell youself. What because i think chuck is going to win i have to cover your bet?. Thats what i think is going to happen and if you dont agree atleast you can disagree in a respectful way. And if chuck wins and i bet on wandy do you want to cover my $100,000 bet?

Any Chuck haters who try to tell me that Chuck didn’t win or try to give some dumb ass excuse why Wandi didn’t win can go and shoot themselves. That was a total decapitation of Wandi, sure Chuck didn’t KO him, but he controlled that fight from the moment it started to the end. Wandi had no clue how to respond to Chucks attacks. So all you cryin liitle bitches can kiss my ass. Next is jardine.
