UFC 83: Michael Bisping vs. Charles McCarthy

Michael Bisping (15-1) will make his middleweight debut against Charles McCarthy (10-4) at UFC 83 in Montreal, Canada, on April 19 at the Bell Centre.
"The Count" is coming off the first professional loss of his mixed martial arts career, dropping a split decision to Rashad Evans at UFC 78: "Validation" last month. Bisping -- light heavyweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 -- his camp and UFC executives decided that a move down a weight class was in order after the performance.
That's due in part because Bisping is on the smaller end in terms of 205-pound fighters and the 185-pound weight class is hungry for talented marquee names.
McCarthy -- also known as "Captain Miserable" from his stint on TUF 4 -- has been inactive since submitting Gideon Ray (armbar) at the TUF 4 Finale in November 2006. He trains with the prestigious American Top Team camp located in South Florida.

That’s not even going to be a close one…McCarthy hasn’t done much in the cage and he was a weakling on TUF. I was hoping for a more formidable opponent for Bisbing. I still wish he would have settled the score with Hammil.

are they trying to pump bisping’s tires with this fight?? If not, it’s quite the slap in the face i’d say……

McCarthy who? Oh right the guy that is 1-1 in the octagon and did nothing on TUF.
The kick Loiseau landed to his ribs was DEADLY!!
Bisping takes this with no troubles.

what a waste – I guess they don’t want Bisping to lose his debut at 185. Not much upside in this for Bisping though…no credit for a win and disaster if he loses.

You people didn’t actually believe, as some were suggesting, that Bisping would be the opponent for the return of Evan Tanner did you? There is a ton of cash to be made in England as long as Bisping is the poster boy. They are always going to give him very winnable fights over there, especially for his debut at a new weight class.

I guess Jason macdonald didn’t know what he was saying when he said the UFC was coming to Canada for UFC 83.
UFC 83 is just 1 week after UFC 82..definately no title on the line for UFC 83

I would love to see Chainsaw cut him apart. McCarthy, even when he loses, at least puts on a good show. (i.e. his fight with David Loiseau)
Speaking of the Crow, for a “185-pound weight class hungry for talented marquee names” when is he going to re-appear?

I’m not surprised. UKPoster Child vs I just got kicked in my liver by a crazy hard spinning back kick and I’ll ball up and cry now McWho.. I can take this whole take on Pussping being a serious contender in any division in the ufc.
I would of been surprised if he was matched up in his first fight against.
Leben
McDonald
Franklin
Nate Marq
Alemida
Lutter
He might do pretty as middle weight at wec.

Charles McCarthy? LOL. What a joke. I’m surprised they didn’t dig up Josh Rafferty to take on Bisping. This match up is a disgrace. Before the Bisping/Evans fight, Dana was saying that both guys were in the Top 10 of the LHW division. If that was true, and he moved down a weight class, a much weaker weight class, you would think that he would stay in the Top 10, if he was truely in the top 10 (I don’t think he ever was in the LHW division).
Another dissapointing matchup booked by the UFC.

This is just pathetic. Dana could you please at least try to make it look like you are throwing Bisping in against a decent opponent ? CAPTAIN MISERBALE ? I know him only for being sad all the time and eating oatmeal at TUF 4 kitchen table lol.
Way to go Dana, look out for # 1 (yourself), only worry about the UFC brass and your bank account. Forget about the fans who actually want to see Bisping get laid out in dramatic fashion.
Guys he should be fighting who are “decent” and would at least put up a solid showing to some extent
1. Edwin DeWees (baby face)
2. Trevor Prangley
3. Ivan Salaverry
4. Scott Smith
I mean come on Dana, you can’t possibly get more sacrificial a lamb than Charles McCarthy. Your a douchebag !!!

I thought Bispings opponent progression was natural during his first few fights. After all you should not throw them to the wolves just because the won a TV show. I thought he was competing against guys at his skill level at the time, and was progressing to more difficult fighters, eventually securing a fight against a top 10 (UFC Rating not mine)LHW. Now he drops where he should have an advantage in size and strength, and they give him a gimme. Very lame. He should be fighting a top 10 MW. Still a fan of his, but this fight on paper is way too one sided.

Bisping is a good fighter. I don’t know who this guy is, but I can’t believe they wouldn’t give him a serious contender. I can’t believe Bisping would take the fight. I guess they are trying to ease him into it but like it was said before, if he was a serious top 10 LHW then he should hold up as a middleweight too.

They are probably afraid to give Bisping real talent for a fight in England cause the judges would screw that guy over again like with Hamill. Instead they throw him a bum so the fans from England can make believe Bisping is such an incredible fighter like when Bisping took on the great 8-11 Elvis Sinosic.

Okay folks…let’s be honest, Bisping is going to destroy the rest of this division. Other than Silva, Henderson, and hopefully soon to be resigned Lindland, who’s gojng to challenge Bisping? The guy was robbed against Evans in a very close fight(my opinion). I see him holding the belt, or atleast challenging for it, very soon.
All you Bisping haters take note, the guy doesn’t book his own fights, and he’s proven he’s not afraid of tough competition. Give the UFC time to develop him. He’s still young, and has tons of potential…I look forward to seeing him take on Franklin, Lutter, MacDouchebag, and all the rest. And remember, Hendo doesn’t really want to fight at 185…

Listen i respect you for liking Bisping BUT, as much as i think he will be athreat for the title, there are many bad match ups in the 185 weight class for him.
Hendo, although i feel bisping has better stand up, hendo will throw him around like a little girl
Silva, I think is a better match up than the Hendo fight, BUT come on…….. I’t Anderson Silva will anybody beat him?
Franklin, I think that would be a greaat fight until franklin took him to the groun, and he would probably stop Bisping as much as it pains me to say it.
I think bisping would beat down, Leban, Macdonald, Martin, and terrel, BUT oncce again I feel…..
Herman would be aterrible match up for bisping, he has a solid chin, and would ground and pound the shit out of bisping.
I dont think it will be long until he might enter the welterwieght division, cause 185 will only leave him so far, example…..FRANKLIN

Charles McCarthy? Why the hell Dana sign him to fight Bisping? He’s not even in the same level as Bisping, maybe Dana was just using him as a walkout to make Bisping look good or maybe Dana’s just a cheap bastard for putting low level fighers againts the high level fighers so he doesn’t have to pay much money in this fight. One of you don’t know McCarthy is don’t worry he’s not too bad, he actually fought againts David Loiseau which you might have seen it on UFC Unleashed and he also fought on the Ultimate Fighter show. Y did Bisping even accept this fight.
off topic: Interesting interview with Pat Miletich, talking about how much potential Cory Hill has:
IGN: Who do you think is the fighter in your camp that’s off most MMA fans’ radar screens, but has the most potential for future success?
Pat: Corey Hill.
IGN: Oh, from Ultimate Fighter…
Pat: Well, you know, he wasn’t 100% truthful to get on the show, so he went in there absolutely knowing nothing about Jens Pulver or me or Jeremy Horn. It’s funny because Corey Hill looks at me now and says “You were a World Champion?” And I say “Yeah, I held the title for three, three and a half years”, and he says “No kidding.” He doesn’t know a lot about the sport, but his boxing, kicking, his submission stuff, his positional stuff, he’s working on all that, and his wrestling ability and his ability to take people down when he wants to do is unreal. I don’t know any 155-pounders out there who could take him down.
IGN: Really? Not even Sean Sherk?
Pat: Sean Sherk would have a lot of real trouble taking down Corey Hill, mark my words.
IGN: Wow.
Pat: There are wrestlers that are tough and ready for this sport, and he’s one of the best. He’s a rottweiler. No one else has that body type. He’s got wide shoulders and a waist like my wife’s.
Besides him, LC Davis is fighting for the 145-pound title, he’s popping on the scene, everyone knows about Rockwell, Ryan McGivern is just coming into his own, Rory Markham’s working a lot on his ground game, there’s a lot of guys who have serious potential.
IGN: What were the circumstances that led to Matt Hughes, Robbie Lawler, and Matt Pena leaving to form their own camp?
Pat: Money. Money was one of the more motivating factors. They were offered money from a sports agent to start a facility down there using Matt’s name. He’s been commuting from Hillsborough, which is 3.5 hours away, and he’s got kids and a family, so it’s not been easy. I couldn’t do it, I know that much. He decided that it was time for him and his family and his career to start up a new place closer to him to allow him to train for fights and see his family. I don’t blame him.
IGN: Was it unexpected?
Pat: Not necessarily unexpected, they came to me, told me about it, told me they were working on it, and I said “Awesome, do what you gotta do.”

Cool enough, we all have our views – and I am very optimistic about Bispings chances. You’re right, he will find some competitive fights in the 185ib division – and he will be in tough if/when he faces the likes of Silva, Hendo, Lindland. I can’t see any of the guys you mentioned (other than Leben or mabye Lutter, and defintely Franklin) actually giving him a fight. He faught a world class wrestler (Evans), who carries some heavy hands, and he was never in jepardy…None of the guys he’ll be fighting now will be near as strong as Evans was…
All you who have criticized Bisping for his opponents, wake up…blame the UFC for not throwing him in against a legit contender. And to the guy who said “J-Mac would ruin this wanker”, good luck my friend. Mac’s not quite in Bisping’s league.
Again, Bisping will tear things up. Personally, I’d love to see him fight Franklin (a fighter I very much respect)… he’d make short work of the former champ…too much on his feet, and there’s no way Franklin could keep him on the ground…

VERY WELL PUT AS USUAL MIKE !
BUT YOU SEE DANA CALLED THEM BOTH TOP 10 LHW BECAUSE THE CARD BLEW WHALE COCK AND HE NEEDED TO MAKE SOME MONEY OFF PPV SALES. AGAIN A GREAT PLACE TO HAVE A UFC EVENT ACROSS THE STREET FROM PROJECTS IN ONE OF THE MOST CRIME RIDDEN CITIES IN THE U.S. (NEWARK)
Whale penises can be up to 6 feet long.

Hey Dana, since you insist on spoonfeeding Bisping, why don’t you have him fight a nice fluffy kitten for his next match? My money would be on the kitten.

This is a joke! They just want to keep Bispings record in England unbeaten. Just another marketing plot by Dana. This really is just stealing money from the fans. If anyone orders this ppv they are clearly stupid. This is your main event? This is a joke.

MAN! after the Bisping, Hammil fiasco, we (myself included)were all like “I’m never paying for another UFC until they schedule a rematch.” I don’t care what you think of Hammil or Bisping, we deserve to see that fight.
…and for the record, I’ll be shelling out $40 on Dec 29, Oh well.
agree that was a steal a cheat a farse bisbing vs HAMIlll oh now the ufc is waiting for him to be totally deaf and blind then the will rematch, RUBBISH I SAY

If Bisping was robbed in the evans fight..then Matt Hammil was Car jacked and shot by the judges in their fight. If Dana considers " Bisping " to be these top10? lhw..when dropping down to 185..why is he set up to fight Charles..he doesn’t choose his opponents Well at least he can say I want to fight the best in the division from JumpStreet. He will go on camera and say how good Charles is and he is a dangerous opponent..all tha tjumbo talk..but he knows he got a freebee..I saw his true colors when he got manhandled by Hammil in every rounf of their fight..to turn around and talk all that gack..even Goldberg and Rogan during the fight gave it to Hammil..but Joe was feeling to femmine interview him afterwards..not like he did with Gray Manard..Michael is a good MMA fighter..but lightyears from being great..and not what the UFC paints him as.
Hey Franklin..just pulled out of the Travis Lutter fight..why not fight Lutter?? That would be a better fight to see.

what a waste – I guess they don’t want Bisping to lose his debut at 185. Not much upside in this for Bisping though…no credit for a win and disaster if he loses.
One would have to agree with that!
I’d say there is more pressure on fighting schmuks due to the downside of losing to one.

Mike Bisbing vs Ed Herman!!!
would have to put money on Bisping for that one

Pete Sell is one tuff Mofo..win or lose puts on a show and leaves everything he has in the cage..I would love to see Bisping fight Pete Sell..IMO Pete would be a dangerous opponent for the Brit..remember he beat Charles McCarthy on the TUF 4..so Bisping fighting Charles now says alot about how good Bisping is right.

I could see Bisping being top ten in that division, buti can’t see him beating franklin, mcdonald, oakami, silva, henderson, etc. Bisping is a good Light Heavyweight and a good Middleweight—but is there any division where he could be considered “great?”
Prediction:
Dana keeps kissing the brit’s ass.

NEXT TIME Bisping is on a card, I’m taking a break from the TV. I can’t stand that half assed fighter. He should not even be in the UFC. He sucks.

Are you kidding me UFC / Dana!!?? That’s what you have to offer us…the fan? Bisping vs. McCarthy…this must be a joke. First steroids, then the Fedor/Randy fiasco and now spoon feeding Bisping a walk over opponent. Man…I’m begining to lose my patience.

I would love to see Chainsaw cut him apart. McCarthy, even when he loses, at least puts on a good show. (i.e. his fight with David Loiseau)
Speaking of the Crow, for a “185-pound weight class hungry for talented marquee names” when is he going to re-appear?
As soon as he finds his gahonas. He lost them in the Franklin fight and he hasn’t been the same since. I hope he can get back on track, because he is such an exciting fighter.

i think he lacks KO power for the bigger boys at 205. he may be able to KO some folks at 185.

Personally, I’d love to see him fight Franklin (a fighter I very much respect)… he’d make short work of the former champ…too much on his feet, and there’s no way Franklin could keep him on the ground…
..i’d have to agree. after Bisping’s performance against Hamill/Evans, there’s no way i see Franklin keeping Bisping on the ground (if he’d even attempt to take down Bisping). I’d put my money on Bisping for the W via UD against Franklin.
Franklin has dominated the MW divison (minus Silva)…. but it has been the WEAKEST divison….so i’m not very impressed at all with Franklin. the MW div’s just a black hole for talent.

There is a ton of cash to be made in England as long as Bisping is the poster boy. They are always going to give him very winnable fights over there, especially for his debut at a new weight class.
Yeah this is very true. I wonder if Michael minds being put up against bums?
by RobH86 on Dec 22, 2007 12:34 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I see Charles winning via submission and Bisping sitting there with that “I have to take a dump” face he always has going on.

Thats too funny!! I’m not suprized. Its gonna be another weak fight, Especially since the 185 is being dominated by the spider, bisping wouldn’t even be able to be a contender against anderson silva. But i wouldn’t be suprised that if he beats this guy, and anderson silva beats dan henderson that they’ll give bisping to silva WATCH FOR It!!!
The only way for this to happen is if Dan Henderson walks into the fight drunk, and if Bisping sucks Dana White’s itty bitty dick for a second time. Oh, and then a third time. Then all of the sudden, there’s a title fight in England….woooohoooo.

I don’t think “The Crow” will ever be back in the UFC, he is not the same fighter since he got beat by franklin.
“The Crow” fights for ElitceXC along with “Ruthless” Robbi Lawler, Nick Diaz and Kimbo Slice!

That’s not even going to be a close one…McCarthy hasn’t done much in the cage and he was a weakling on TUF. I was hoping for a more formidable opponent for Bisbing. I still wish he would have settled the score with Hammil.
charles thats my fucking coach i train with him 6 days a week he busts his fucking ass … charles is my homeboy know dont be talking fucking shit nothing wrong with bisping but dont talk about charles

The news is quite shocking, but I believe Charles McCarthy is underrated and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Kevin Kelly says someone like Edwin Dewees would put up a more solid fight, but there’s no doubt in my mind McCarthy would win over Dewees, who is pretty weak in my opinion.
I hope McCarthy wins this match, just to have the non-believers to eat their own words for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a midnight snack!

I cant believe how many think bisbing is going to tear through the 185lbs division.. first off leben would knock him out, macdonald would choke him out, sakara who also dropped to 185 would pick him aprt then knock him out, herman would ground and pound him, jorge rivera would knock him out, and im not even mentioning franklin, marquardt, horn, hendo, silva.. couse they would all destroy bisbing… hes good but hes got a way to go before he challenges any of the top guys..
Oh and McCarthy will win by ground and pound or submission…

Bisping too strong for Silva. Not in this lifetime. Bisping could be the Worlds Strongest Man and still would not be too strong for Silva. I dont care how strong Bisping is, if he eats a couple of those sharp knees or a flurry of strikes from all angles he will be in big trouble. Bisping will never have the tools to challenge Anderson Silva. In fact very few fighters out there right now do. Anderson has too many weapons and he is at the top of his game. It will take a very skilled fighter to even challenge him. The only other UFC fighters that could even match skill sets would be St. Pierre and BJ Penn. BJ is where he belongs and St. Pierre could move up in weight i suppose but its not likely.
