UFC 81: Tim Sylvia signs bout agreement to fight 'Minotauro' Nogueira for vacant heavyweight title

Former heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia has inked his half of a contract to compete for the vacant heavyweight title against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81: "Breaking Point" on February 2, 2008, from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to FightNetwork.com.
Monte Cox -- who represents "The Maine-aic" -- indicates that all that remains to make the bout official is a signature from "Minotauro."
Here's a snip from Cox:
"Tim signed the contract, and we haven't heard anything else about it -- if Nogueira has signed his contract or what."
Despite the official confirmation, Cox reveals in the report that Sylvia has "already begun his training camp for the championship bout."
That puts to rest recent speculation that Cheick Kongo was still in the mix to challenge for the belt. In fact, according to the article, Justin McCully has been approached about taking on the Parisian that same evening.
An answer from McCully is expected any day -- he is currently overseas with Team Punishment teammate Tito Ortiz visiting American troops on a USO Tour.
The match up between Sylvia and "Big Nog" would serve as the main event of the evening, alongside the co-feature of Frank Mir against Brock Lesnar.
It now seems more likely than ever that a replacement for recently resigned division champion Randy Couture will be determined on SuperBowl weekend.

There is no way that Nog WON’T sign the contract…but i can see nog losing(shit)…Timothy likes to clinh and hold his opponents against the cage…Unfortunately it works..And Nog isn’t as well versed in the Cage as Timothy(shit)..but of course i will be shouting for Nog..all day everyday!

Sylvia will smash Big Nog. If Heath Herring nearly beat him, Sylvia win by KO or at worst TKO. Sylvia will be UFC HW Champ again soon.
I am not sure why everyone hates Tim, get over it. He had one bad night with Randy … do not expect this again. And apart from a coulple of ‘safe’ fights, he has some great knock outs.
William W – how the hell does Gonzaga deserve a shot more than Tim. Sylvia would kill Kongo or Gonzaga.

YEAH, Slyvia will beat Nog…RAndy, he just kicked his ass. Even though I kinda like Big Timmy, he’s not a half bad guy and he’s getting more comfortable in his interviews. He lost a lot of credibility after getting caught using steroids and then his lackluster wins with the “Pitbull” and everyones favorite Couture crushed him. He’s not a posterboy, kinda slow and awkward and bigger than his opponents I guess all those things make him out to be the villian. Personally as time goes by I like Big Timmy more n’ more… he’s shown a lot of resliance coming back the way he has so he gets my respect.

Andrei deserves the shot more than Tim. Andrei has two wins (neither of which were overly exciting) and one loss since losing the title whereas Tim has on lackluster win over a guy he outweighed by 50lb and simply pinned up agasinst the cage to score a victory. If Tim wants to be a real champ, he needs to step it up about ten notches and be agressive. Nog will kill him if he approaches this fight the same way he approached the Monson fight. Not that I care. I can’t stand Tim Sylvia. I hope Nog tears his arm off and beats him into submission with it.
On the other fight, McCully will get destroyed by Kongo. I predict Justin’s head landing in the 20th row. Guy barely beat Hardonk, who has zero ground skill and sub-par striking. Kongo has minimal ground skill and excellent striking. Bye Justin!

I think the reason everyone hates Tim is that he is one the most boring fighters we have ever seen. When he was coming up for the belt he was crushing guys. Now he just likes to hold you and hope the judges see that as control. when someone takes him to the ground all he does is ask the ref to stand it up. Whenever he wins one of his boring fights he goes on to say that he is gonna “knockout” whoever his next opponent may be. I think you have to throw some shots to do that Tim. Just to back up what i am saying, 5 of his last 6 fights have been very boring decision victories. He doesn’t finish. If you recall when he fought Monson the ref had to take the both of them aside and TELL THEM TO FIGHT!!! I hope Nogueira breaks his arm like Mir did and we never have to sit through one of his boring fights again.

The Tremors, LOL, I thought the same thing.
(Sigh) As much as I don’t wanna jump on the Tim Sylvia hating bandwagon, and I’m really not, I just don’t wanna see him as champ again. His title reign represented just how dismally unstacked the UFC’s heavy weight division is. If only I had a time machine I could go back and fix a few things to get it back on track:
1. Get Dana White to pay Randy what he feels he deserves to keep him happy. I like Randy though I think he is one of the top five overated fighters in the sport today. He is a likeable guy and brings a flare to the sport that few can.
2. Get Cro Cop the training and motivation he needed to KO Gonzaga.
3. Teach Dana White Russian negotiation edicate: IE refrain from “Crazy f’ing Russian” quotes and strong arm Fedor’s manager from pushing his own agenda on Emelianenko’s career endevours.

Don’t much care about this one. It seems to be a fight for 4th or 5th place in the world. Can’t even rank Sylvia that high, even if he wins. Well, at least Tim isn’t getting a title shot after losing 2 in a row in LHW division. Maybe he’ll win this one and one more, then leave the UFC with a billion people on a “greatest of all time” bandwagon because there’s nobody left that’s worthwhile for him to fight. UFC should have re signed Arlovski give himh the title shot that he was promised after beating Werdum
It should be Arlovski vs. Noguerra for the title…
Tim Sylvia vs. Kongo for #1 contender…..and this is supposed to be the best event of the year…..hardly….Best fight on the card is Marquardt vs. Leites!~
Everyone pray that Noguerra becomes champ, because I cant deal with Big Tim…..and all of you haters need to give Noguerra a break….u all say he had a sh*tty performance….he got hit with one blow all fight, a viscous kick on the chin, that he still took like a man and fought through it….Noguerra is more then qualified to hold the UFC title…..Lets just hope he rips Tim’s arm off!

I think Tim needs another fight before he should get a chance for the title, more so after the boring performance against Vera which is his only win after losing the tile from Randy. Heck, Arlovski has been swept under the carpet after a boring fight with Werdum but atleat he has got two wins in a row and more fan following than Big Tim. The heavyweight division has lost a lot of steam after Randy left when it was finally starting to shape up.
I would like to see a Grand Prix style tournament like in pride so the championship would mean something, but doubt the UFC would warm to this idea. It would be good to see the next TUF featuring proper Heavyweights to bring in new talent and options at heavyweight and Brock Lesnar should have been given an easier fight than Mir to see where his game is at and to build him up a bit more. Huge failure if he looses on the UFC’s part. Overall not convinced with this fight and don’t think it is worthy of Heavyweight Championship status at this point.

Jerome Le Banner blasts Tim Sylvia
TN: If Tim Sylvia wins the heavyweight belt in February against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, any chance of us seeing you coming to the US to try and knock him out?
JB: (laughing) It’s been a long time since anybody talked to me about the “big sausage”…that guy is so unspectacular. He’s so ugly and annoying. Seriously, it would be a pity if the UFC had him as a champ again…he’s not Couture, Noguiera or Fedor! When I challenged him like 2 years ago, I was just tired of seeing that guy and reading and hearing fans and commentators saying he was a world striker, etc. Don’t get me wrong, the guy is good, he has some skills and a little bit of heart, but…is this enough? Just ask your US readers: Does Tim Sylvia have the skills, the style and charisma to be one of the greatest? I say no…
I would love to fight him! I would love to fight at least once in the UFC cage. It would be a very nice moment. If it happens, I’ll beat down this uncharismatic fighter. I’ll show the US fans what an exciting fighter is; not a conservative motherf*cker who just wants to win without giving a good show…
Can you imagine, I come in to the UFC, I knock him out and I go back home (laughing). It would be such a mess! If he loses versus Nog, I’ll be happy to fight him! Hey, Dana White, make this happen! Or imagine a season of “The Ultimate Fighter” show with Sylvia and I as coaches and we fight at the finale! It’d be great. I’m sure I would train the guys well! “USA versus the world” or “the search for the next heavyweight champion” (laughing). I think the fans will love this show!

Official offer from M-1-==M-1 made an offer to UFC for Couture vs. Fedor=-
“We got an official offer from M-1 to the UFC to do a co-promotion for the Couture-Emelianenko fight, and they (UFC) rejected that offer. Really, the only thing standing in the way for that fight right now is Dana and the UFC. Obviously, M-1 is happy to do a co-promotion like that. It only serves to help them. I think the UFC is looking at it the other way, and it’s like why do we want to help out another organization? The fans want to see that fight. At some point, you have to put that first.”

As for that Vera guy… you can say Tim is lame but he SUCKED against Tim!! BIGTIME!! Really not bothered about seeing Vera fight again.
I miss AA as much as the rest but lets face it… the guy is a head case and mentally not up to it lately.
Still I wouldn’t worry…come on.. seriously…NOG is gonna Submit Tim, Tim won’t KO Nog for sh*t.. so unless he allows himself to be pressed against the cage for 5 rounds i think he’ll win it!

How about the fighters who fight him.Why dont they do anything in the fight?I know the guy is too big and is very difficut for fighterS to deal with that size. Kongo is very much improved and could probably take tim. But lets face it: Rampage could ko anyone in the hw division without really breaking a sweat.
I think houston might match up well with tim since neither really relies on their ground game. i’m just pissed the ufc is trying to give the belt back to one of the most borring fighters the world of mma has ever seen. i don’t think nogger’s got a chance unless he’s able to catch tim in a frank mir style submission.

Tim’s fights are so boring. Between rounds you could hear militech telling Tim to hold VEra against the cage. Tim is a boring fighter and here is his coach TELLING him to be boring! How can they keep giving tim fights when he is more boring than AA? Balls-ass!

i really hope big nog wins, i cant stand slyvia.. somewhere after his fight with tra tellingmen (if thats how you spell his name) he lost something and replaced it with a disgusting looking gut and excess body weight… he used to be ripped and skilled and fun to watch.. now its like, when he comes on the tv, you leave the room and wait for the fight to be over and the next one come on.. the ufc seems to be crumbling under the pressure of “top dog” and making bad dicisions like this recently.. tim sylvia vs big nog for the title.. sylvia does not deserve it at all.. he only beat 1 guy since his loss.. bullshit… the hv div. needs immediatant CPR to revive it, it is a dying division.. sylvia needs to go back on stanozolol to lose weight and get his image back.. or something like that

actually, i dont think it is.. that looks like his celebration for beating arlovski for the first time, and he wasnt on roid, he was on stanozolol and it was to lose weight.. the guy has enough bad shit goin on, he doesnt need an internet rumor that he’s on roid.. its a banned substance and he used it for cutting weight and that was over 4 years ago

I look at this as the glass is half full, not half empty. Either way, the UFC will have an active HW champ who will probaly face Kongo or Gonzaga (pending his fight with Werdum). Plus if Tim wins, the anti-Tim contingent can look forward to having a new favorite fighter…Tim’s opponent in his title defenses. If Tim loses, well, you got to see him get worked over in February.
MMA math doesn’t work, but if Tim stops Nog, what does that say to all the people screaming that Randy should fight Nog?

John and BW you guys must be in bed together. I am the biggest Arlovski fan, but here is a few pointers for you two knobs:
- In the Sylvia v Arlovski fight, the Pitbull was actually responsible for at slow performance to
- Arlovski’s last fight against Werdum was just as boring as any others
Once again you two have proved the point – Tim isnt aesthetically pleasing so let hate him
If you p**fs want men with ripped bodies go and buy a men’s health magazine, or go watch a body sculpting competition.

Steve …
nice call on the big size – because you only need size to bear Arlovski twice, Monsoon on the ground, Vera in stand up … yeah, not much skill required at all …
Wanker!

I think this is a step backwards for the division. It is really too bad things came to this. Tim has proven he is very beatable, and not a top notch guy when it comes to marketability. Hopefully Tim will come to bang instead of clinch!

i agree. i hope nog wins covincingly. maybee then randy will come to his senses and see that big nog is a legitamite threat and sign to fight him.
Althoguh it does play a factor, there is more to it then just pure ‘excitment’. Ya know like, skill, ability, talent…..winning fights.

Dude, first of all, you are not the biggest Arlovski fan, I hold that title, but it’s all good. AA was not responsible for the slow performance, he was dealing with Sylvia’s game plan of not engaging and counter punching for a lucky knockout. And that is one of the many reasons people hate Tim, not just because he isn’t aesthetically pleasing.

Tims not my fav fighter, but he as a lot of heart, and is a reliable champ…he almost always comes out to do what he has to in order to win even if he loses some fans by being boring. Good for him, he is a smart guy when it comes to his career in the UFC. Chuck Liddell is an example of what happens when you don’t play it safe once in a while like Sylvia is…after a couple losses your one time “fans” boo you. Nog has almost no chance of submitting Tim. Tim is good on the ground…I mean shit he out wrestled Monson, and fended of Couture on his back for an entire round. Noone can stand with him (accept maybe AA) right now, and if they do good he will just clench, and beat them with his size. Although he is awkward his skills are very well rounded. The only thing he lacks is speed, but he’s not even that slow. Sylvia will be champ again, and will continue to be champ, or lose/quickly regain his title for several years to come.

The UFC should know by now, KEEP SYLVIA AWAY FROM THE TITLE! No one wants to watch a boring fight. He may be able to win fights but god they are never ending. Its like watching paint dry. If they want positive reaction from the crowds and increase in popularity they should know how to make proper fights. If Dana was smart and put business before friendship in this situation, he should have made Nog vs Gonzaga or Arlovski vs Nog. Anyone instead of Sylvia though.

No one likes Tim and in a way, disrespect him as a fighter by booing him winnig or losing, which is in my opinion something that is not fair. As a fan I will never boo a figher because of a poor performance. I would like to see Randy entering the octagon again and see how people will react after doing what he did, which a lot fans still think he is right. I dont know how you can sign something you are not happy with.Tim is boring I know, but that is not what fighters say when they have to fight him .What do they do ? They all talk about the size. I would not worry if I was a fighter and had to fight someone like Tim. Again he is boring, fighters who fight Tim are not boring until they fight him and I cannot understand why it happens. When fans talk about the Pitbull’s boring fights one of them was against Tim. Why? Because he knew how hard Tim can hit and dodged him for five rounds. You may not like him , but deal with it ’cause he is going to be around for a long time. What did The pitbull do in his last fights to deserve a title shot? Nothing, but BS.If you are a fighter and you know you are not big enough to fight him ,drop down and move to another division, but do not come with excuses when you lose.Fans, that must hurt to be booed after a fight. Think about this!
