UFC 79 prefight teleconference snips for 'Nemesis' (Audio)

Matt Hughes vs Georges St pierre UFC 79
Once again Mr. Sunshine has audio highlights of the teleconference that took place today to promote the blockbuster year-ending pay-per-view (PPV) event UFC 79: "Nemesis" on December 29 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It's a "great inside look at what the media gets out of the fighters" before their fights.

Here's a taste of the questions that were asked:

Matt Hughes: What did you learn from last St. Pierre fight? Can you stand up with St. Pierre? Do you have a pyschological advantage? How has training gone? Why the nicer attitude about St. Pierre this time around? Did you make anti-French comments last fight? Did you draw new energy from the young guys on TUF 6?

Georges St. Pierre: Will there be surprises in your gameplan? How do counter Hughes ability to take opponents down? How has the loss to Serra affected you? Any chance you're overconfident for this fight?

Chuck Liddell: What was your reaction to finally getting the chance at Silva? How big is this fight for your career? Have you made any changes in training? What will silence questions about your age? Are you still motivated to fight? What is your fight day schedule?

Wanderlei Silva: Why was this fght put on hold for so long? Is there anything new in your game? What is Xtreme Couture training versus back in Brazil? What do you think of the UFC Light HWT division?

For the audio responses click here. And to check out the complete UFC 79 fight card go here.

Remind me not to forget to put you on my Christmas card list, Mania! As for my contribution, I submit this: GSP in round two by TKO. As for Silva and Liddell, I honestly think you will have to carry both of these guys out of the ring and into the ambulance. I don’t see either one of them tapping and I don’t see either one of them hitting the ground. There is way too much build up and pride on the line. Put the gun to my head and pull the trigger because I cannot call this one.

Matt gives such shitty interviews. He had such a bad attitude during the whole thing. He was rude and short with all of the callers. I can understand that it must be frustrating to have answer the same questions over and over again but damn- if it’s that painful don’t do us any favors.

One thing that disappoints me with gsp is he says exactly the same thing over and over again, don’t know if its the language thing or what but he needs to gets some new material. I agree that hughes comes off as kind of short and has an attitude which I guess is part of the reason so many mma fans don’t like him. Both silva and liddel are hard to listen to for me not the most well spoken guys, silva especially. Hughes actually was the most well spoken out of all these guys which is kinda sad but there fighters and fun to watch not listen to.

Ok, realistically, when it comes to GROUND GAME, the ONLY evidance we have is fight one, in which Hughes, like I said, made a sub of it in like two minutes. There is NO reason to believe GSP can GnP Hughes, he didnt in fight one in the two seconds he got on top, and he didnt ground and pound KOS either for your recent history. SO anyway why would one not logically give the ground to Hughes? I know I do.

The question obviously is can he get him down. In fight two, he tried once, did he get him down? NO. In fight one he tried teh whole round, pressed him agaisnt the cage and tried and tried again, eventually, got it. Like fight two, Hughes did not succeed the first time. So I don’t think Hughes will get it the first time, and it wont be easy, but I think he can.

God after hearing Hughes’s interview, I would say you’r caption should say. “Hughes does not answer questions like……..”
That fool is sooo frusterating to listen to in an interview.

St. Pierre is one of those fighters who has two sides to him, and you never know who is going to show up, like Arlovski. Sometimes its the confident fighter who can handle any situation, and then theres the other side who panicks when he gets into trouble. Usually its the confident Pierre and I think he is going to fight Hughes mentally prepared, I dont think he would have taken the fight if he had any doubt. And for all those Hughes fans who think, that because he managed to arm bar him years ago, that its going to happen again prepare to be surprised. I dont think that because St. pierre beat Hughes the last time that he is going to automaticly do it again.

“Ok, realistically, when it comes to GROUND GAME, the ONLY evidance we have is fight one, in which Hughes, like I said, made a sub of it in like two minutes. St. Pierre might not have gnp’ed Kos but he out wresteled him and many say that Kos is a better wrestler than Hughes, I dont know if thats true im just saying. Plus Rush was coming off of a loss and probably was just thinking about maintaining control, he did keep pressure on Kos with the kimura. Alot of top fighters take it easy in their first fight after a loss just to get a win and reclaim their confidence, so they can turn up the heat on their next opponent.

On a side note, Im glad that these two guys are acting classy about the whole thing and are sounding like actual professionals. I was a Serra fan but after listening to a whole season of him trash talking Hughes I grew kind of sick of him. Even though I think Hughes can seem like a jerk sometimes he does have a point that the champion should have a certain level of respect for his opponents.

Did anyone else notice how gsp said a couple of times that hughes was a very good striker? I agree hughes boxing has improved over the years but c’mon gsp made him look brutal on his feet in there second fight. I think koscheck has better stand up than hughes but gsp seems to disagree, go figure.

by nathan on Dec 19, 2007 2:53 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Who has hughes even stunned in his fights standing up? I remember koscheck knocking down a guy at least once but I can’t say the same for hughes, granted I haven’t seen all of hughes fights but feel pretty confident in stating gsp is over estimating hughes stand up prowess. Maybe he’s trying to give hughes some false confidence again and make him think he can stand with him so he gets ko’ed again.

by nathan on Dec 19, 2007 3:03 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

many people (including me) most often prdeict GSP fights will win by 2nd round TKO.

since GSP’s game is soo good, and he thinks that he can beat the guy he’s facing in the cage, then he puts some warmup & feels his opponent in round 1,then at the end of round 1 he sit in his corner & finished figure out on how to beat exactly his opponent, then when the round 2 starts,he’ll go for a kill!

Kill Hughes with Kindness that’s what GSP’s doing… he’s always very complimentary of his opponents… it’s just his style, that’s the way GSP likes to enter fights no animosity just sportsman like business

Yeah, he’s just an ass and not very personable, no bad blood with GSP from HUGHES VS GSP II according to Hughes?… Hughes forgot that GSP jumped in the ring after Hughes/Penn fight and GSP said “I am not impressed”… I think Hughes was pissed for awhile and wouldn’t accept GSP’s apology and then made fun of him being canadian on a radio program.

Am I the only one that thinks GSP can win this in the first round? Personally, I think Hughes was 5 seconds away from being ended in the first round of last fight. I don’t want to take away anything from the man, but I think GSP can do it. I guess it’s all about how the fight starts. If GSP goes for it, 1st round TKO.

I can’t wait for this fight, I was actually supposed to work during this fight, but I refused and my boss finally gave in. I guess he realized that I was not going to miss it at any costs.

you would expect more out of a devoted Christian……………………..

Interviewer: Matt, how has your training changed since your last fight?

Hughes: Well, I replaced prayer service with my stand up.

Interviewer: Smart move matt, you will need it.

Phil, I think GSP would approach a rematch with Serra the same way…..GSP is probably the classiest and most professional person in mma. He has replaced Randy in that respect. I believe GSP would still have his same respectful approach, entering a fight with the Terror

INTERESTING:

Ben Rothwell blasts Hughes, proves he really is an ass who treats people like crap
From mmafightline.com

Former Matt Hughes training partner and IFL champion Ben Rothwell did not mince words when expressing his thoughts on the upcoming fight between Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre.
“I can’t say I won’t be happy if St. Pierre gets another head kick through,” said Rothwell to Bob Parson of Carson’s Corner. “I never really liked him. He always had a bad attitude.”

“He treats people around him poorly and has no respect. Really when I hear him talk about God and do this and do that and I love my wife, I want to puke you (Hughes) couldn’t look anyone in the face anymore, and you f-ed Monte (Cox) and Pat (Miletich) over and the fucking gym that MADE YOU”

WOW, what a di*ck! Does anyone even like the dude.

Check out Wanderlei’s blog…..very interesting calling out Rickson.

 Wand atacks Rickson!
Wand has recently criticized rickson gracie in his blog to the result of the super-challenge semi finals between andre galvao and xande ribeiro

he says xande cheated, that galvao, that is his bjj trainer right now won.

in his first posts he declares:

-If rickson really have 400 fights, how can he not see the true results? Did the fact that xande is master and partner of rickson’s son influenced his decision? are this judges the same guys that judged rickson vs sergio penha(ouch!)? He asked if rickson showed the 400 video to those judges to. He finishes saying that xande showed himself a man and gave half of the prize to andre galvao, knowing the true result.

-In the second post he respond to the critics he received in the first one: “where are all the 400 videos? enough with legends… if i’m wrong i’ll be the first one to say i’m sorry, i just wanna know the truth.” then he says, in a response to rickson’s statement that mma is getting worse:" if he thinks we are in a low level, why doesnt he come back fighting a raise our level again?"

-In the third post he says that he wont write more about this subject because he has more important stuff, and that he recognizes rickson’s and the gracies importance to mma but he thinks everyone should try to know their places. he says if people do1nt have proofs that rickson really is all that don’t try to force a legend. he ends saying that he doesnt know if rickson was involved, but that xande payed the judges

Is this the end of Chute Box?

- SHOGUN & NINJA CONTINUE CHUTE BOXE EXODUS
Tuesday, December 18, 2007 – by Ken Pishna – MMAWeekly.com
NinjaWanderleiShogunPridePr.jpg

Chute Boxe leader Rudimar Fedrigo on Tuesday announced, via the Chute Boxe website, that Murilo “Ninja” and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua have officially left the team.

“We regret the (departure) of Murilo and Mauricio Rua,” commented Fedrigo indicating that they were leaving to form their own team in the United States. “The doors of Chute Boxe will always be open to them and we wish them good luck.”

The Rua brothers are the latest in a number of talented fighters that have made the decision to leave Chute Boxe recently.

Shogun is a former Pride Middleweight Grand Prix winner and Ninja a former EliteXC middleweight champion.

The most high profile fighter to leave has been former Pride middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva, who is set to make his Ultimate Fighting Championship return on Dec. 29 against Chuck Liddell.

Andre “Dida” Amade, who made it to the K-1 Hero’s 154-pound tournament final this year, also announced his decision to leave the team recently. He is moving to Canada to accept an offer to teach mixed martial arts and Muay Thai.

“I have talked with Master Rafael Cordeiro and I’ve never seen him so sad with anything,” said Dida of his decision to leave. “He was disappointed with the news. I consider him as a father, but I have to leave.”

The departure of the Rua brothers along with Silva and Amade will have a tremendous impact on the once dominant Brazilian team. The foursome represents much of the success that the team has had in recent years.

It was recently reported that Evan Tanner signed a new contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and would soon return to the Octagon following more than a one-and-a-half year hiatus.

The former middleweight champion has now started to mix up his training routines and begun working once again with his old friend Josh Burkman, who trained alongside Tanner at Team Quest in Oregon.

“When he left (Team) Quest and I left Quest, I would train with him a little bit out there in Vegas … whenever he decides he wants to get serious and start training he gets a hold of me and comes out to Utah,” Burkman said of Tanner’s return to his training camp.

Burkman spoke highly about Tanner’s commitment to training and what it’s like to work with him in camp.

“When he’s training, there’s nobody better to train with.”

The atmosphere at the training camp in Utah has been healthy for Burkman, and Tanner will surely benefit from the work there as well.

“The thing about Utah is that it’s just a good environment,” Burkman said. “The place is really easy to get around, the altitude’s high, and there’s not a lot of distractions.”

While no date has been named for Tanner’s official return to the Octagon, Burkman feels that he will be a force in the UFC’s middleweight division the day he fights again.

“He so intelligent, he’s so smart and he’s a gifted athlete,” said Burkman. “If Evan Tanner focuses, I think everybody in the 185-pound division, they’re in trouble.”

Tanner continues to work and train in Las Vegas as well and has not announced any plans to permanently join any specific team.

my prediction: hughes bites it, early 3rd round, via elbow brutalilty. contrary to popular assumption, i think it’s going to be georges, not hughes, getting the early takedowns and dominating top position. i wouldn’t be surprised if georges completely schools matt in the standup game again, avoids takedowns, and ends it with elbow brutality from top position.
