UFC Quick Quote: BJ Penn focused on Joe Stevenson ... kinda

"It's all about getting that lightweight title right now.... Joe Stevenson isn't the big name like Hughes or (Georges) St. Pierre, but it's all about getting the title. I really want to be the first guy to have a belt in the lightweight and welterweight divisions.... The guy [Sean Sherk] has been cheating for how many years? At least everybody knows now what everybody had suspected the whole time. But honestly, I can't worry about Sean Sherk right now. I can't look past Joe Stevenson. I've got to beat him, or there won't be any fight with Sean Sherk, there won't be any fight with Matt Hughes. As far as Sherk goes, he's going to have to sit on the side and wait while the two people fight for the real lightweight championship, not the 'steroid championship'...."
-- BJ Penn tells the Houston Chronicle that he is not looking past his upcoming fight with Joe Stevenson at UFC 80: "Rapid Fire" in Newcastle, England, on January 19 for the interim lightweight title. With a win "The Prodigy" would be the first fighter in the history of the organization to win 155 and 170-pound championships. He also backs off the previous statements that he would not fight Sherk, saying that he would "entertain" the match up. For the latest rumored UFC 80 fight card click here.

What everybody has suspected . . . does that mean that other fighters have discussed this and think he’s been juicing for a while? I’m sure suspicions and rumors have flown around locker rooms at events, and these guys probably have a better idea of who’s doing what than a bunch of dudes on a message board.

Penn is really ripping on sherk and i can not wait to see this fight. this is going to be like the ortiz shamrock feud of the lightweight class. these two guys hate each other and just wanna pound each other i like joe stevenson alot and as much as i want to see him win i would like to see bj win more just so we can see penn vs. sherk.
Also off topic i heard the ufc is going to raise the ppv prices from $39.99 to $44.99 starting with ufc 81. Kinda sucks dana keeps talking about he doesnt want to be like boxing but with moves like these he is getting closer and closer

Its not about does he think Matt Hughes will win, he jsut wants a peice of that cocky farmer. He beat him once and he just wants a rubber match to get some closure. Bj is a true fighter not ilke that Jacob “tito” ortiz charecter. He wants to fight all the BIG names, to me that is what a champion is all about!
How can anyone not love this guy?

I will probably get a lot of crap for this but I don’t think that BJ Penn is all that.
Ya sure he’s talent but what is all the hype around this guy. He’s lost before “DADDY” ain’t that bad a fighter either.
Let’s hope Joe Stevenson does’nt hurt him to bad and I look forward to hearing “THE PRODIGIES” excusses for loosing again.

this is one of the reasons im hoping Joe wins..it would be more stable for the lightweight division…Bjs already talking about fighting other people who arent in the division, he’s thinking about fighting hughes moreso than fighting sherk, griffin, huerta, edgar, florian, ect…if joe takes it, he will definately fight sherk, and whoever wins that will keep taking on the #1 contenders in THEIR division…i like BJ alot, but hes the type of fighter that would be best suited not being champion, he likes getting as many belts as possible for his resume, but getting him to defend those belts in that weightclass seems like pulling teeth…and right now the UFC needs stable champions, so we dont have to have anymore interim belts out there

I like that Sherk and Penn are already trading barbs. If Penn can beat Stevenson, the trash talk should spice up an already great fight. I’m glad the WW division is in limbo at least until spring 08. That might force Penn to stay at 155 for at least one title defense.

Sorry to get off Topic but it looks like Vitor is comming back to the UFC…Check this out:
Vitor Belfort recently confirmed a meeting with Zuffa to Tagg Radio.
“We had a meeting it was great,” said Belfort. “Actually what I want, everybody has PRIDE and one thing I have is unfinished business with Tito (Ortiz) being the last fight. Since I won the fight, most people feel I won the fight.”
The fight Belfort is referring to ended in a split decision win for Tito Ortiz, but Belfort is confident that things would be different if they fought again.
“Basically what I would like to do is I would like to fight him and I have a challenge for him,” Belfort said. “The challenge would be winner take it all. The UFC’s my house. See, a lot of guys there, they are at my house. The UFC’s my house, they come into my land. Even Tito, he came after, he came to my house. I know the fans want the old Vitor back,” stated Belfort. “I took care of my issues, took care of my problems so now I’m clean and ready to get back into the UFC.”
Belfort also confirmed that he is no longer training at Black House and instead has opted for working with a team of coaches and training partners.
“I want to fight with the best so you have to be around the best,” said Belfort

As far as Steroid use goes the UFC needs to learn a lesson from MLB. They need to start their own comprehensive testing policy now, before the sport gets a black eye the way baseball has. Any fighter under contract should have to submit to random and scheduled tests to ensure that they are not using performance enhancers at any time prior to a fight. It should be easy because they don’t have all that many fighters under contract.
Ideally this testing policy would keep the majority of fighters from daring to take the drugs and this whole business of suspecting fighters to be juicing would just go away.
I really don’t know why the UFC has not instituted something like this yet.

Definitely. Every active fighter should be randomly tested throughout the year, and with blood tests, not just urine. Human growth hormone isn’t dectable through urine, and I would bet it’s a problem already. A certain LHW and at least two members of his team have the enlarged head and jaw that are indicative of HGH abuse. Personally, I think Dana should “punish” all the members of that “team.”

I just want to see great fights and BJ should has all of the makings of a great one. Daddy will make a go of it, but he simply hasn’t fought the same caliber of fights as BJ has over the duration of their careers. BJ fought Lyoto machida once a 205’r. Based on their fight records, it is an easy call to make.

What makes you hate him? How can you say he’s not a great fighter. He won the welterweight championship in a higher weight class than he is used to and beta the Champ that held the belt for years. You also say that the later the fight goes the more Stevenson has a chance in winning. I disagree. Penn gassed in one fight and that was against GSP. With his new strength and conditioning coach he will never lack in stamina. He beat Rodgrigo and Renzo Gracie, both of which went to decision. Beat Matt Serra by decision. By winning those fights, he showed great stamina. He even beat GOMI in the third round. I can understand people not liking his character, but I don’t understand people questioning his ability.

BJ Penn needs to shut his mouth. If he spent as much time running his fat ass and much as he runs his fat mouth maybe Hughes wouldn’t have sent him down to lightweight. BJ is out of line with all his comments about Sherk, and I hope he loses real soon.
I hope Sherk hears all of this garbage and comes at BJ furious. Of course, that’s assuming Joe Stevenson loses to BJ. I think Stevenson has a shot, but not a very good one. I’d say a guillotine would be his best shot.
Penn is very unprofessional and no one sees him for what he really is.

Definitely need unannounced testing done for just the fighters on UFC cards, so Dana doesn’t complain about spending so much $$$ on steroid testing. If fighters train for 3 months prior or whatever before fight date, they can’t have the benefits of training on steriods and cycle off come fight time. Testing should begin the week fighters accept the UFC fight and randomly continue until fight time.
Something like that should be implemented.

Well said Hector – totally agree. When BJ’s on, he can hang with about anyone, but he’s been inconsistent. If he comes up to WW and leapfrogs all the guys that have been paying their dues, it’s total BS. He’ll be top 10 without a doubt….maybe even top 5, but there’s no way he should jump in front of Fitch, Karo or maybe even Kos for a title shot without a couple WW wins.

Damn right he’s the man. YOu should be able to look past his win-loss record. THe fact of the matter is, he pushed GSP farther than anybody has. The new GSP, that is. If the GSP that was fighting BJ was in the first fight he would’ve beaten Hughes. And it was a split decision against the best welterweight in the world. There’s really nothing to say about his second fight with Hughes. He was clearly winning the first two rounds and was completely defenseless against Hughes in teh third because his rib was dislocated. Just think about it……HUGHES WAS PICKING HIM APART ON THEIR FEET!!! THERE MUST’VE BEEN SOMETHING WRONG WITH HIM!! Oh, and I’m sure Sherk, GSP, Hughes and Stevenson would be able to beat Lyoto.

I agree- 4 weeks is not enough time to prepare for a 5 round fight… that’s why GSP has been training for much longer than that. Do you think that GSP was totally out of shape and unprepared in late November? If you do, I don’t understand why. Also, the fight is most likely not going to go the full five rounds, GSP really just needs to not get taken down and I see him winning the fight in the first 2 rounds.

I think penn is a great fighter regardless of his record, he did very well considering his size against bigger top guys. I really hope penn beats stevenson convincingly because I would LOVE to see a fight between sherk and penn, the bad blood is already heating up. Man I think 2008 is going to be great, a lot of potential great match ups. Penn has the all the tools to hold the light weight title for a long time if he gets his cardio top notch. I also think he could be a serious threat to the welter weight champion who ever it is, and to me is the most likely candidate to hold both light and welter weight titles at the same time. Granted it’s not going to be an easy task with gsp there, especially if he remains focused and hungry.

BJ Penn is a monster @ 155. Fighting Machida at 205 and some of the biggest 170s puts Penn overweight and underconditioned. 155 forces him to do cardio and be conditioned. Big Daddy is in Big Trouble.

I hate BJ Penn, literally. I can not stand him, I can not watch him in the octagon, I always cheer for the other guy. I think he is not as great of a fighter as people make him out to be. I think if you get him in the third round he could be done.
BJ runs his mouth so much, I hope Joe Daddy shuts him up.
BJ will dismantle Joe in round one. There is absolutely no way this fight makes it to the third round, BJ is on a mission: He wants that belt, he’s going to be in shape and he wants Sherk. I think this is going to be the BJ Penn we have ever seen and he finally has the desire to put it all together. I feel sorry for Joe, BJ is going to put the hurt on him!

so that mean hes saying, he will beat Joe, get the belt. Does he reaally think that Hughes is going to win against GSP on Dec 29…..
no…they mean hes beat hughes before for the belt and now that he dropped if he wins against joe daddy he will have won the titles in both divisions..hes not going to welter again

As much as I dislike BJ Penn I am going to stand up for him.
If you lose to the top 2 guys in the Welterweight Division it does not make you crappy. He did defeat Matt Hughes in a pretty good fashion.
He might of won that GSP match too, very close.
I mean look at him vs. Lyoto.. Huge difference between those two.
I just think BJ talks a lot of smack and he really never gives his oppononent any credit what so ever.
I dislike BJ, and I think Daddy beats his ass in round 4 because BJ will gas out like he always does.
I STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH Mr. NC-17. Why do people say BJ PENN always gasses? He gassed one time and that was against GSP. ONE fight does not mean ALL fights. There’s no fighter in the Lightweight division that can beat BJ PENN, and there’s only one guy in the welterweight division that will give BJ a hard time and his name is GSP. I think that if they fought again BJ PENN will win.
The Anomaly, please back me up.

Great points about his stamina.
Oh and GSP running over Penn? Talk to me when GSP can go three rounds with Machida, didn’t think so.

I just want to see great fights and BJ should has all of the makings of a great one. Daddy will make a go of it, but he simply hasn’t fought the same caliber of fights as BJ has over the duration of their careers. BJ fought Lyoto machida once a 205’r. Based on their fight records, it is an easy call to make.
bj fought machida at heavyweight man…check out the fight its hard to find but a good watch still..it went to decision which is impressive considering bjs soft at 155….

Oh and GSP has a larger than usual injured list as far as pulling out of fights. I’m assuming due to overtraining, and if ever he was going to overtrain, i’m assuming it would be now, i’ll be looking out for that….. train smart GSP.

His record sucks compared to many top fighters, but when you look at who he has fought u understand that record isnt everything. If anyone thinks that BJ isnt one of the best fighters in the world, then maybe mma isnt for u!
Huh? C-war stated the obvious and didn’t catch the dude’s sarcasm and you say “well said”? I don’t get it.

Penn frequently makes the top 10 pound for pound MMA fighter of the world list when guys like diego sanchez who at the time had a perfect record is no where to be found on the list. The amount of wins doesn’t mean a whole lot unless you analysis who the fighter fought, how close the fight was and other variables. Penn in my opinion is THE most naturally talented fighter I’ve ever seen, with a less than stellar work ethic. I would love to see penn beat stevenson then sherk and if gsp beats hughes and serra fight gsp for the welter weight title, that would be wicked. With there last fight being so close and controversial I think most would love to see a rematch , I also want to see penn vs hughes 3.

Don’t forget, GSP sent Sherk back to lightweight too! Should be a great fight. Let BJ talk some trash, Sherk deserves it that roid head.

Okay first off Machida is a 205er so its no shame to lose to him when you a natural 155er and his fights with GSP and Hughes were both very close against guys much bigger than him and he was dominating Hughes before breaking a rib. I still feel he’d beet Hughes 7 out of 10 times.

Well let him run his mouth in the ring when he has sherk on top of him knocking all his teeth down his throat. Sherk is no lay and pray fighter. You people read it on a website written by some jackass and it speads like wildfire. If yous think hes a lay and pray fighter have him lay and pray on top of you. Sherk will once again rise to the top of the lightweight divison…wait and see. All he needs to do is get past joe stevenson.

Personally, I like Penn for the same reasons people hate Penn:
he has an ego, he does whatever the hell he feels like doing, he speaks his mind, he’s not on anybody’s balls (i.e. Dana White), he doesn’t care what people think about him, he doesn’t feel the need to be “popular”, he doesn’t pretend to be anything he is not, and last but not least, he’s a gifted fighter.
Don’t hate on the guy for not being/doing/saying what you think he should be/do/say. He’s a fighter. If you’re a fight fan, watch him fight, not talk about how much he loves the fans and respects his fellow man or w/e else makes you fall in love with a fighter.
And anyone who denies his abilities needs to check his MMA knowledge. Rewatch his loss to GSP. The fight was VERY close. BJ smacked GSP around in the first. GSP had nothing significant for him on the feet the entire fight. BJ DID gas towards the halfway point and gave up some takedowns, but again, GSP had nothing for him on the ground either. GSP was able to land little to no clean shots the entire fight. He squeaked out the decision with his takedowns that led to zero damage. If it was Pride scoring, BJ would have won for sure (watch Fedor vs. Arona 1997. Arona dominated Fedor at takedowns and positioning but they gave the fight to Fedor for more effective damage. UFC scoring would have given a UD victory to Arona). This was the GSP that absolutely CRUSHED Hughes in his next fight.
Obviously, BJ has dropped some important fights. GSP’s conditioning was a level above Penn’s in their fight. He should have been prepared for that (he admitted that and changed his training accordingly). The injury in Penn-Hughes II was unfortunate. But looking past these things, you can’t deny Penn’s beastliness. WW isn’t even his natural weight class. But, I hope he gets a good strength and conditioning coach and moves back up to WW soon. Should make for some good times for us.

Very well said, THORAZINE. It doesn’t help that Dana White was supporting this mook throughout his CSAC process. If you’re gonna stick by someone, goddamnit, be a man enough to stand by your buddy even if he’s found guilty of taking artificial ball juice.
I’d go a couple steps further. Drug testing should be comprehensive and MANDATORY upon acceptance of a fight. I’m tired of watching a MMA fight and reading a couple weeks later that some asshole was taking steroids (cough Phil Baroni cough). I’m tired of cry baby bitches like Marion Jones fucking up the Olympics, and I’m tired of assuming that there’s a chance that any competitive athlete may be dirty.
Should every fighter suffer because of losers and cowards who can’t hack it without performance enhancing drugs? Hell no. It sucks, but shit happens. It would be really cool if not just promoters and organizers issued stiff penalties, but the sponsors did so as well.

Whoaaa.I have been misunderstood. I am not saying BJ will hold the Welterweight Title and Lightweight title simultaneously. But if BJ wins the LW title he will be the only man besides Randy to hold belts in 2 different categories (not simultaneously), because he already has a welterweight belt sitting in his house after taking it from Hughes.

Rib injury? Bullshit. Rib injuries don’t keep you hands down by your side while a shitty striker like Hughes tees off on your face. BJ’s mediocre greatness is in the past. - BJ Penn has never been destroyed in a fight, and he’s fought the 2 best guys in a higher weight class.
- He gassed out exactly once (against GSP). Just because you don’t care what we say, doesn’t make it untrue, idiot.
- Calling something bullshit with no reasonable justification doesn’t make you right either.
- If you break your ribs, it’s very hard to raise your arms. So… keeping your hands down by your side while a shitty striker like Hughes tees off on your face is EXACTLY a sign of a broken rib.

BJ Penn is one of the most over hyped fighters there is. He is a good fighter, but he would be a lot better if he didn’t run his mouth. So far he hasn’t been able to back any of it up in the cage. He beats Hughes once a couple of years ago comes back and gets beat by Hughes and GSP. Now he is dropping a weight class and bad mouthing Sherk, but all of that doesn’t matter because Joe “Daddy” is going to drop the hammer on Baby Jay and he won’t have to worry about being a pus and not fighting Sherk.

What everybody has suspected . . . does that mean that other fighters have discussed this and think he’s been juicing for a while? I’m sure suspicions and rumors have flown around locker rooms at events, and these guys probably have a better idea of who’s doing what than a bunch of dudes on a message board.
We will all know the truth in a few months when Sherk is back.
If Sherk comes back conciderably smaller, he is guilty.
If he come back the same size, he was inocent.
If he comes back bigger, he is stupid (still juicing)LOL.

El problemo is..he most likely beats the guy before the 3round starts.
I second that!
7 times he beat the guy before the 3rd, 9 times he didn’t. More often than not Bj goes 3 or more rounds, which he wins half of these longer fights.

- BJ Penn has never been destroyed in a fight, and he’s fought the 2 best guys in a higher weight class.
If someone just watched the last 3 minutes of Hughes pounding his head into a pancake, they might beg to differ. If the ref had to stop the fight, you got destroyed, because if the ref wasn’t there ,you die!
