UFC 81 PPV to cost $44.95 -- not free on CBS

UFC 81
UFC 81: "Breaking Point" on Saturday, February 2, 2008, will be a pay-per-view (PPV) event and cost $44.95 -- $5 more than the most recent set cost of $39.95 -- according to a recent press release (December 5).

This latest official news puts to rest speculation that the show from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on SuperBowl weekend would air for free on the CBS network.

Middleweight Terry Martin -- who is slated to compete on the card -- sparked those rumors a few weeks ago with a MySpace bulletin that included the statement. In addition, Dave Meltzer reported not too long ago that UFC 80 was also under consideration for a CBS broadcast.

Clearly, the two parties are in talks but nothing is official ... yet.

The price hike shouldn't be too alarming. PPV events will still cost less than the major professional boxing fights. Furthermore, the UFC puts on a tremendous amount of free fights annually thanks to the UFC Ultimate Fight Night specials and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) mixed martial arts reality series on SpikeTV.

And if the potential CBS deal is indeed legit that means even more free MMA action.

To check out the latest UFC 81 fight card, which feature the heavyweight showdown between former division champ Frank Mir and UFC newcomer Brock Lesnar, click here.

Come on everyone cough up five more bucks every month. Dana and the Fertittas need new Bentleys. Now why do they have to do this? Everything seemed to be working fine. Pretty soon PPV’s are gonna cost more than boxing. MMAMANIA why are you acting like this ok?

Oh man. This could be the beginging of a downhill phase for UFC.

I know I’m not paying that for that main event.

$5 doesn’t really bother me, personally. Most of that is split anyway among friends, etc. Hopefully, like I said in the post, we’ll also be treated to more free fights on Spike and another network in 2008 and beyond. Being optimistic for once, I suppose. Tis the season.

Maybe the ufc should go back to when they had a ppv every other month or so. They are trying to crap one in every month. Then wanting to hold off title fight for months for tuf. We as fans are getting shafted on the main events. i love the sport of mma, but come on a ppv every 3-4 weeks come on. We are getting ok bouts but not main event fights for 44.95. Great way to market the ufc right now, have heavyweight grand prix ppv for the title.

Whys Mir only get 3 stars and Brock gets 6? Pay the money or wait the day and watch it on the net. UFC 80 is looking lackluster I bet that ones on CBS.

COME onN!
MANIA!
this makes no sense …you see how little fighters get paid..the only, and you all see we sometimes miss the fight off ther night and or sub or ko of the night and we have to pay more for it on dana’a website…f that i’m not paying for this anymore and i’ve been a loyal fan of the ufc since ufc 1….too much for too little like the mayweather fight what a rib off one decent fight for 54 sum dollars bullucks.

THE only way this is justified is if DANA puts all the undercards on , then i wouldn’t mind paying extra, or for dana to see who keeps paying for these ufc’s and dana even says the people that are loyal ufc watchers of the ppv’s are not rich like me and so dana is not marketing for the TRUE MMA fan…

Or if they could convince me that this price hike will stop ? WHAT IS THE END GAME DANA?
OR if the fighters will get paid more,
BUT what do i know i’m just an MMA fan

39.95 X 12 months = 479.04 .(not including taxes). SO IM PAYING OVER 500 dollars every year just to watch ufc. ARENT THEY MAKING ENOUGH MONEY ALREADY.

WTF.. 39 dollars is already to much. I order Every UFC payperview and hate paying 39.95 And Now They are gonna hike up the price.WTF

quit bitching, i get every ppv that i can, no matter what the main event is! Its a great reason to get together with the boys and have a few beers. You never know when you are going to see the fight of the year (war machine vs j-roc) and that is why i have no problem paying 40 or 50 for ppv

Dantheman I agree w/ you. PPV’s are a great reason to get the guys together for a good time. Five bucks divided up among a few people is not very noticable. I think it’s worth it to have a fight-night party. Also, did everyone complain when their McDonalds combo-meal prices went up? Yeah I know it’s not the same thing.

by trav-dog on Dec 18, 2007 12:02 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

simple solution: don’t buy it; or do what that other dude said and go to hooters to watch.

i bet you the prices will STILL go up as long as Dana and Zuffa has data to prove there is enough demand for a (this) PPV to sell at $45.

Yeah honestly, they should have started teh price increase on a phenomenal card like the new years card or something of that quality, you get what i’m saying? It seems smarter, would take some of the attention off the price, and might hush initial complaints with teh justification that it’s worth it, even if only for one card.

hey guys…they keep raising the price on ppv hell…i get in the ring and take a ass whoopin for some of the ducketts these guys make…..i’ll probably even last longer than iceman did against rampage…..point being its gettig to expensive to watch someone fight for possibly 1 minute…..when i can get the results for free on the website…..cause it dont matter how you win….its all the same….i wont pay this amountcause half the fighters today arent worth paying for and with the looks of some of these cards im sure i wont be alone.

THE price is too high and will only get higher especially with Dana White stating"i’;dlike to get all fights 5 rounds and championships to 7 rounds,
Well that sucks more because we’ll see less fights.
I have no problem with the price hike if and only if they will show the prelims too!!
COME ON PEEPS! rEPRESENT
OH and mMir =3 stars for his last name stupids, thus Lesnar=5 stars due to his last name containing 5 charcters
rocket science,

$5 more X 12 PPVs a year = $60 more a year per hard core fan. It’s like the UFC is adding 1 1/2 more PPVs a year without having to pay the fighters, production, venue, etc. for it. The only question left is: will enough people go and watch the fight at a sports bar leaving a mark for Dana and Co. to bring it back down to $40. I doubt it, but it would be funny if it did happen.

If the UFC could forge a partnership with CBS to air major fight cards instead of putting them on PPV then the UFC would make more money through ad revenue. everyone wins that way.

by pw on Dec 18, 2007 11:05 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

it not the amount of money that makes this an issue… its that the pay-per-veiws have been the same price for ever now. so now the UFC is more popular than ever, dana has put in a lot of work and we have been very thankful and loyal. why does he have to raise the price now??? yea we get free fights on spike, but somebody is makes money for advertising. it aint like hes putting on the free shows for charity!!! hey dana….just tell me what da problem is!!!

$5.00 isnt the point. I hear that $44.99 will soon turn into $49.99, and when will the raise in prices stop. It wont stop until a company grows enough to be able to compete with the UFC

Without a major competitor, Dana can do what ever he wants, raise prices, stiff fighters (arlovski)

It is in our best interest as fans that an organization can grow enough to compete with the UFC….as fans, right now M-1 is our only hope….If not Dana will continue to become the dictator of mma, and us fans and the fighters will not benifet, the only people to benefit is the head honcho’s of the UFC!

That’s a little hard dude.

The UFC is a business with a product and like all other businesses – they are just trying to maximize their return.

This is probably just a test of their price elasticity of demand. If the number of viewers * price = less total income when the price goes up, they’ll probably drop it back down.

Maybe they’ll test the low side of normal and see if the total income goes up from a large increase in viewers.

I would not suggest boycott because I’m not a hypocrit and I’ll be paying the extra $$$, but I’m sure a lot of people won’t pay it. If enough don’t pay this price increase might end up just a one off test.

i thinks its real shitty when u gotta pay more for less. really other than the new years fight the last 5-6 fights havent been worth the 40 let alone 5 more bucks. i thought mma was the anti high class spender like in boxing, thats what dana preached we give better fights for less kinda going in the wrong direction since boxing lowered there price i think hell even wwe went from 50 to 45.if ufc wants to continue to grow they need to keep it at 40 or lower or like someone said wait for good fights dont just put any yayhoo on every month like lesnar n mir comeon seriously? all i know is im definately picking and choosing the fights i rent myself or with friends and this wont be one i view. GOOD JOB UFC lets lose all your true viewers that dont have the 45 every month..guess like the song u dont know what u got till its gone think about that dana white!
