Yarennoka: Fedor Emelianenko booked to fight Hong Man Choi on New Year's Eve

Recent M-1 free agent superstar acquisition, Fedor Emelianenko (26-1), will compete during the main event at "Yarennoka" against 7'2" K-1 veteran and Korean wanna-be rapper, Hong Man Choi (1-0).
Rumors that the Russian cyborg would return to action against the "Techno Goliath" were recently confirmed as official. And while the match up is pretty much a joke, the rest of the fight card from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, is shaping up to be killer.
Here's a look:
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Hong Man Choi
Hayato "Mach" Sakurai vs. Hidehiko Hasegawa
Gilbert Melendez vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida
Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Luiz Azeredo
Shinya Aoki vs. Gesias "JZ" Calvancante
Kazuo Misaki vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama
Ricardo Arona vs. TBA
Aleksander Emelianenko vs. TBA (rumor)
Murilo Bustamante vs. TBA (rumor)
Rest assured that this is a stacked line up of some of the top international talent in mixed martial arts. The lightweight showdowns (Melendez-Ishida, Aoki-Calvancante, etc.) are downright sick.
Too bad the headliner is more circus than competition. But maybe that's the point ... Japanese fight fans are into that kind of thing.
Mark Cuban's HDNet Fights will broadcast "Yarennoka " on its network LIVE at 6 a.m. ET on December 31, 2007. Program those DVRs now .

LMAO..kept hiding the opponent, it is what it is, you have to fight tough competition to still remain #1.

There you go John, its finally official. The Techno Goliath get the fight.
Just the other day, I noticed that I no longer get the HDnet channel, but I used to. Strange. Luckily I get Versus, and it in HD as well. Spike needs to upgrade!
Quick Question: Given the opportunity to select one and only one channel to get out of the two, which would it be Versus or HDnet? The main factors playing into the decision is of course WEC on Versus, and M-1 and smaller promotions on HDnet.
My answer is – I am satisfied with my current situation.

I echo the sentiment hoping that Fedor gets beat. If he wants to not be in the UFC so he can fight Hong Man Choi then so be it.

I think I might be the only one in the world (outside of Japan I guess) who wants to see this fight. 7’2", 350 pounds? I think it will be interesting to see how Fedor deals with it. And when a guy is that massive, he’s always got at least some chance of winning.

Melendez Vs Isida is a terrible fight. I know alot of people think Ishida is very good, but he is the most overated guy at LW.
I just hope they show Aoki Vs JZ (amazing) and Misaki Vs Akiyama (also great.
The rest of the card is nice!
Fedor Vs Choi is a joke using any reasoning. Alot of people are just happy to see the guy fight like they were when he faught Zulu. Me if your the worlds #1 guy p4p you dont fight basicly a amature MMA guy.
Kawajiri Vs Azeredo very good. all though Luiz never wins the big fights.
Mach Vs Hasagawa is ok Mach should roll easily.
So far a pretty good card, not great. but very good.
JZ Vs Aoki and Misaki Vs akiyama are two of the best on paper all year.

im quite dissapointed what i see on this topic – people are not appreciating Choi’s accomplishments – hes a K1 monster with good wins against some big headed guys. To put choi down is showing who really knows what about MMA. Its a shame – choi is a good, solid fighter with sledge hammer fists, scrap that – his hands are bigger than a sledge hammer. He wont win but it is a good fight at the end of the day

VM..I have neither at this time..I’m lucky I got spike. I thought I should have versus on the reg cable pkge but I don’t. Today I would say Vs is the better of the two. The Tapout show..Wec…but later on HD might be better with different events and shows..analysis and stuff..but if you both you can’t go wrong.
There should be a 24hr MMa/valetudo/Bjj channel..like in Brazil you Combate which is 24/7..old school..new school..tourneys..interviews..everything in one channel all the time..like NY1..news all day.

Although he has just one MMA fight to his credit, he’s an accomplished K-1 boxer (who owns a career 12-3 record) and wrestler. He made his MMA debut last New Year’s Eve in a K-1 event and defeated two-fight veteran Bobby Ologun — a 215-pounder — with a TKO via punches just 16 seconds into the fight. Thanks!!

I agree. I think it is an American mentality that has to see the best vs. the best all the time. And when there’s nothing really wrong with that, the Japanese can be into these kind of freakshow testaments to entertainment, hence cyborg vs. techno goliath? Also, Fedor’s not necessarily taking the easy way out. He hasn’t fought in about a year, so he deserves a tune-up of sorts, before we see his best vs. best anyway. And Choi’s size against Fedor’s 6ft. frame is a great challenge for him. I’m gonna tune in.

Atta boy Mania, u finally report on this and once again I get no love, no assist… This is what I am talking about the RETURN of PRIDE… kind of!
ViolentMike: WE usually agree on most subject but I am gonna have to go against you on this one. Given thre choice betwen WEC and This event I would have to go with HDnet. I would prefer the WEC to the normal small HDnet fight cards, but if Cuban is gonna air Yeronaka or any other show that involves all the former PRIDE stars not signed to the UFC…I am gonna have to roll with Cuban!
My cable provider is Dish Network, can anyone tell me if HDNET is even available on dish network? I know the versus channel is available but what about HDnet?
I love the UFC but I gotta call it like I see it…This event is a much better overall event than Nemesis, which is basically selling us 3 relevant fights, I see many more intruiging fights on the Yeronaka card.
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Hong Man Choi: I am the first to admit that Fedor vs. Sum Dum Guy isnt that appealing but Fedor hasnt fought in a year and I cannot miss out on the opportunity to watch the Russian Experiment no matter who he faces.
Hayato “Mach” Sakurai vs. Hidehiko Hasegawa: This is definetly better than Melvin vs. Clementi
Gilbert Melendez vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida: Ishida may be overated but he is still a formidable opponent and Gilbert is a very skilled young fighter trainig with Nick Diazes camp
Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Luiz Azeredo: This will be a great fight. Azeredo might loose big fights, but they are always exciting and Kawajiri is no slouch either
Shinya Aoki vs. Gesias “JZ” Calvancante: This fight will be amazing. I think both of these guys could compete at a high level against the UFC’s lightweights. GRESAT FIGHT!
Kazuo Misaki vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama: This will be a good solid fight
Ricardo Arona vs. TBA: I guess Arona isnt signed to the UFC after all. Get him a decent opponent and this will be a good card
Aleksander Emelianenko vs. TBA (rumor): I am always curious to see baby Fedor in action. His game is flawed but he will come after you and it usually is exciting
Murilo Bustamante vs. TBA (rumor)I would like to see Mustamante vs. Arona but I think they train together. Bustamante has fought the best in the world and has always held his own, get him a decent opponent and it will be a good fight.
This is the closest thing to a PRIDE event that we will probably ever see. I am rooting for this event to be a success because UFC needs formidable competition in the mma market to keep Dana from monopolizing the sport, lowballing fighters, and put pressure on him to provide better cards than what he has given us recently.
Joakim Hansens was also rumored to make his return at this event…we will see what happens with that.

Engage and destroy any possible threats.
7"²2"³ 350pounds(not fat!) G&P, nasty elbows, 350 freaking pounds behind it? We’re talking coma & possibly re-construction surgery here.
Some MMA “know it all” fans talk like their $#$# don’t stink nor bleed. That giant dude is dangerous.
If HW MMA fighters are really the top of the found chain (something that’s still need to be proven!) then… anything that offers a serious challenge should be engage and destroy.
St-Pierre(170) understands this concept, Sherk(155) & Penn(155) threats have already been dealt with. After Serra, GSP is gonna call up Anderson Silva(185).

your thinking of a sombody else that fought lesner this is hong man choi and he is a good k-1 fighter. not in fedors league but he is a big star outside of the usa.fedor will stop being #1 when somebody else steps up and dominates the h.w. devision.i think he is fighting weak compition right now but will soon face top contenders like barnett but no other h.w. is out there dominating the top h.w. to take the #1 spot, they will need more than 2 wins in a row to challange his #1 ranking or if he loses witch he may if he fights barnett.

I smell a Huge Arlovski vs. Fedor fight I would say Summer – Winter of 2008 brewing. If Dana doesnt dip in his pockets pay Andre and re sign him to a new contract, his current contract will expire he will be pissed and go looking for a big payday (Arlovski loves his money as much as anyone), and M-1 will be there to lure him in. I dont know if M-1 can do it alone, but by being a part of the Yerenoka show, they are showing that they are willing to work with other organizations to put on Big Fights (something Dana white has been reluctant to do).

So would M1 have a back up plan.. and who would it be?
I say send AA over there as plan B. It would get UFC coverage on an M1 event. Then if AA did demo Fedor ( which is starting to look like a real possibility these days)
That would completly crush that league.
AA would then get the money he wants from the UFC and sign a nice contract. A long one.

MMAWeekly: Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White has been quoted as saying, “I don’t think Fedor is a top-five heavyweight in the world, and I’m not saying that because I didn’t get Fedor. I’ve always felt that way about Fedor and I always felt Randy Couture would beat Fedor … Fedor is a farce.” How do you feel about these comments?
Emelianenko: Dana talks a lot and uses words lightly. Let Randy Couture fight me. Allow this fight that everyone wants to take place. Me, Randy and MMA fans all over the world want it. The only obstacle is Dana.
MMAWeekly: What is your opinion of Randy Couture? He has announced publicly that at this point in his career you are the only fighter that he feels it is worth it for him to face in the ring.
Emelianenko: People want to see this fight and I want to meet him in the ring. I have the greatest respect for Randy and have always admired him. I am also thankful that he has such a high opinion of me.
MMAWeekly: Can you discuss your long-term goals in the M-1 organization? Where do you see the M-1 promotion, and Russian MMA in general, ten years from now?
Emelianenko: I trust in (M-1) and the good people that they have brought together. M-1 gives me the chance to meet champions from various organisations in the ring, instead of being restrained within the limits of one organization.

i think this is a risky fight for fedor in many aspects, the worlds no 1 ranked heavyweight facing a freak with no technique??? fedor shouldn’t, but very well could loose this fight. the reasons behind why he is doing it remain questionable. maybe he wants to knock out the big man and show that he’s back. maybe he just wants a big fat cheque for a bogus fight. regardless, if he wanted a smallish fight against a non-contender to bring him back to speed after a long layoff since his lindland fight, he chose one that raises eybrows to say the least.
I sincerely hope fedor kicks the crap out of hong and continues to dominate the heavyweight scene as pretty much every respectable heavyweight is currently wanting his chance at the man. he has been tested and he deserves his rank as world number 1. Unfortunately, this fight could seriously hurt his credibility among those who haven’t heard of him yet and in particular those who have been waiting for fedor’s next fight.
my fingers crossed for mr emelianenko.
