UFCs Jon 'War Machine' Koppenhaver faces felony assault and battery charges (Update)

Jon War Machine KoppenhaverUPDATE: Kopenhaver has pled guilty in the case mentioned below and could now face misdemeanor charges. He will be sentenced on February 7, 2008. For more details click here.

Recent contestant on season six of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), Jon "War Machine" Koppenhaver, was hauled in today before a California Superior Court Judge on charges that he allegedly choked a man unconscious and punched him in the grill on September 2, according to the San Diego Tribune.

The victim in the case claims that he did not see who broke his face in the confrontation. Furthermore, an independent witness at the scene of the crime testified that Koppenhaver was involved in the incident but was not the one responsible for the damage.

"War Machine" faces a maximum of seven years in the clink if the case goes to trial and he is convicted.

Not the best news to receive just after perhaps the crowning achievement of his mixed martial arts career, stopping Jared Rollins at the TUF 6 Finale earlier this month in a three-round welterweight crowd-pleasing war.

Hopefully in the end the truth prevails and Koppenhaver is cleared of the charges ... if he is indeed innocent.

(Thanks to MMAmania.com readers "Gregg" and "Mr. NC-17" for the assist.)

September 2 hmmm… wen did the show finish? dont the fighters get 2 months to rest and train for the finale so that means that the show ended 2 months ago so about early october, and he missed the first show so that was right before he got onto the show?

BJ’s bar fight was 2 years ago and not much of one at that. There was a rumbling outside of the club, he went out for a look and saw one of his brother’s being pushed around. He started pushing people out of the way to get to his brother and pull him out. Unfortunately one of the people he pushed was an in-uniform officer. He was charged with aggravated battery (no weapon, but because it’s a police officer any battery no matter how light, even a push, is regarded as aggravated battery because the law carries more severe punishment for any violence against officers.) This was all reported in several newspaper articles a couple years ago.

I’m speculating that the reason BJ Penn isn’t denouncing his sentence as BS is that as part of the plea deal (he plead no contest) his lawyer worked with the DA he can’t talk about the plea deal to not serve any time is that he can’t publicly state innocence (it would contradict the no contest plea.) It’s a typical plea deal for first time offenders, or when the “crime” is petty, or there are extenuating circumstances, or a valid defense (in BJ’s case, pushed the officer in defense of his brother, or out of necessity to prevent harm to his brother.)
So take BJ’s “conviction” with a shaker full of salt.

Whatever his disagreement with that guy, I’m sure a single punch would have done the trick and gotten the point across. A bunch of punches and choking someone unconscious- that’s serious business. Felony charges are no joke and they’ll be able to say that he knew exactly what he was doing given his skills and what he does for a living. I wish him the best. He’s got great future as a fighter. I hope he is not too derailed by this (i see why he was in tears at the tuf finale). I hope he realizes he is not an average joe and there maybe people who target him on purpose (hell if he beats the charges or gets them reduced- whose to say this guy won’t sue the shit out him). BJ was defending his brother and that’s one thing but these guys have to be alot more careful.

ANY LEVEL HEADED PERSON CAN SAFELY PERSUME THAT THIS CASE WILL NEVER SEE A TRIAL. AT BEST WAR MACHINE WILL GET PROBATION JUST FOR BEING AT THE WRONG PLACE / WRONG TIME.

Yeah i’ve heard this story from a lot of different sources, a lot of different forums. I hope this is the case, BJ never came off in interviews and on camera, as the kind of person that would do something like that.

That’s just an urban legend. There’s no such thing as someone haveing to register themselves as being a “lethal waepon”. i’m sure if it is well known that someone is a mixed martial arts fighter and then they beat someone almost to death over an arguement, that could factor into the sentenceing.

Wrong Place / Wrong Time? Yet INVOLVED in beating an unconscious victim (holding, punching, or watever he did, he was involved)…. I hope he and the others involved get a decent punishment.

If you are a black belt in any martial art form, you have to register as a lethal weapon, and situations like this regarding conflict, are much more serious for you.
However, in MMA, do teh belts work the same? I mean you practice boxing, JJ, Wrestling, Muy-Thai, do yuo still get teh belts teh same? All seperate arts? OR are you a Black belt in MMA?

The law is probably different in the US, but in Brazil if you are an expert in ANY type of martial art you cannot fight anyone, because the punishment is much more severe than two regular joes going at each other.

by linx on Dec 14, 2007 4:33 AM EST reply actions

It says that War Machine was involved, but the witness clearly says that he was not the one that did the real damage. It sounds to me like he was moreof an accessory to the crime. If he cops a plea he will get at best some community service if his record is not that bad or non existent.

Wow all that for a street fight? That’s nuts. I guess people should think twice if they want to fight outside of a club. WTF man, if someone gets in your face and the only option is to fight and you win, he shouldn’t be a pussy about it.

UNLESS they beat him up for no reason at all. Now that’s jacked up.

""TUF 6’ VET KOPPENHAVER COPS PLEA

He wowed audiences last Saturday with a riveting back-and-forth blood fest against housemate Jared “J Rock” Rollin at “The Ultimate Fighter 6” Finale in Las Vegas, but Jon “War Machine” Koppenhaver didn’t win over any fans in a San Diego Superior Court today. The troubled welterweight pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge, according to a UNION-TRIBUNE report.

Darren Zatkow testified that he’d been dragged away from his girlfriend by an unidentified person and choked unconscious outside the Undisputed Fitness gym on Sept. 2 . Zatkow awoke with facial bone damage; a friend told him he’d been punched by Koppenhaver while he was unconscious."

I Bet he did cry saying that the other guy deserved to be there like he did J-Roc

It was very apparent from the show, the kid needs some friggin mental help. I seriously am surprised that Dana or whomever didnt get that fool some help after he lost his marble on national TV. Sad

Poor kid can’t catch a break, can he. Eh well, some people insist on learning everything the hardway. He’ll be a better person after paying the price for this in that if he hadn’t had punched some random guy in the face he’d be on top of the world right now with his “fight of the year” performance. I love that kid but you reap what you sew.

by Sula on Dec 14, 2007 10:14 AM EST reply actions

God I can’t believe how many of you guys are saying “aww, poor guy.” If he got into a one-on-one fight with someone who was instigating it, he probably would not be facing felony charges. There’s a difference between a routine bar/street fight, and a group of trained fighters choking and beating the shit out of a lone guy.

I feel little sympathy for this douche. Wasn’t there a time when discipline and respect were a part of martial arts training? There was a reason for that. Namely, to minimize the number of deadly-but-dumbass people like Koppenhaver.

If he plead guilty to a felony assault charge, that is very revealing. That means he was facing something potentially much worse than a FELONY charge, probably multiple felonies with guaranteed jail time. That leaves little doubt that Koppenhaver was not just a bystander, but was directly involved in choking or hitting the guy.

by cmon on Dec 14, 2007 10:20 AM EST reply actions

I just read the updated article, and it looks good for War Machine. Boy oh boy, did he get lucky. The person he hit says that he does not want to ruin War’s career over this incident. I don’t see Koppenhaver serving any jail time for this, he’ll just get some community service and a couple years probation.

I don’t see whey a MMA would ever need to throw a punch in a street fight. If you have an BBJ training you should be able to subdue most people with no blood at all.
If I was him I would still be worried. Some old judge is going to see that grenade tattoo and see that his profession is a cage fighter and put him under the jail.

And pro’s get the full punishment, because it’s thier job-and i repeat JOB, to be a pro and act like a pro—that’s why they get paid the big bucks. If you want that money to keep rollin in you got to perform like a pro and carry yourself accordinly. Maybe someone else did it. Then I’m wrong. I hope I am, I’m a war-machine fan. But the sad thing is,is I see it happen all to often. That’s why you keep it in the ring like a pro, & just ignore the bullshit street talk. Stay smart.

Truth is he went to Jail for assult with a deadly weapon and thats what it is called for a fighter. My friend was young now he can’t walk and is bed ridden. He only got a few months for that.My friend did not testify.
Oh and the 5 cop wrestling to take him away on a weapon charge it took 5 cops 13 mins to get jon he locked fists and would not move they finilly hog tied him and while putting him in the cop car he spit in the cops face! So he is coo coo!!! His fame is gone and I got my money on the oppenent. Jon’s Head will do him in. He will end up in Jail or a cap in the head.
