UFC 81: Tim Sylvia confirms he is fighting on 'Breaking Point' card on February 2

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia will compete at UFC 81: "Breaking Point" on February 2, 2008, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the latest blog post on his official Web site.
Here's the snip:
"I just want to apologize to everybody that i haven't been on my website or MySpace in a while. I just moved to a new house and don't have internet yet, because they have to run a new cable. So, I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks it will be up and running. Just found out I'm fighting February 2nd, on the Super Bowl show in Las Vegas. I can't say who I'm fighting yet, but I'll let you all know as soon as I can. Deer season went really well. I'm back in training now, been training for the last three weeks."
It's assumed -- although unconfirmed -- that "The Maine-iac" will challenge Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for the vacant heavyweight title. That's because UFC Heavyweight Champion (for now until official word) Randy Couture turned down an offer to defend his title against "Minotauro" on the SuperBowl weekend card.
The only other option for Sylvia would be to take a fight against Cheick Kongo. In his post-fight remarks after defeating Brandon Vera via unanimous decision at UFC 77: "Hostile Territory," Sylvia called out the Parisian kickboxer. However, it was just around the time Couture faxed in his resignation from a movie set in South Africa.
UFC just made "Breaking Point" official not too long ago and Couture's decision to not return was also made final just this week. Perhaps signatures from Nogueira and Sylvia are all that is holding this bout back from being made public.
Time will tell.
UFC 81 "features" another heavyweight clash between another former division champion, Frank Mir, and WWE superstar turned mixed martial artist, Brock Lesnar. It's an intriguing showdown that is sure to attract a flurry of spectators and viewers because Lesnar is such a high-profile and virtually untested commodity.

I suppose Sylvia-Nog is an acceptable HW championship fight. Nog has all the credentials in the world, even if he did nearly get kicked into next week by Texas Crazy Horse. And as much as I think Big Poopy is an oafish, lumbering lummox who looks for decisions instead of clear victories, he is a two-time former champ. And it will at least clear up one of the three bungled weight class championships.

If there is an mma god he will spare us from Sylvia possibly becoming champion again and havehim face Chek Kongo instead of Noguerra. Noguerra is definetly fighting for the title, hopefully against Arlovski, prefferably against Josh Barnett (but thats just a wish, I doubt the UFC will resign him).
Cheik Kongo is one of the few people that you can match Sylvia up with that would make an exciting fight. I am sick of watching Big ass Sylvia dwarf his opponents. Throw him in there against a Big, Tall, Nasty Kick boxer like Kongo that has the potential to Knock his Big ass out!

Can’t stand Big tim but I see him winning a decision against Big Nog, I will bet my $ 5 on it

My above statement was just a dream scenario….It looks like its gonna be Sylvia vs. Noguerra for the title….GOD help us all and save us for the most Boring Champion of all time….Tim Sylvia.
Having to watch him fight for 5 rounds is so painful. There arent too many pure strikers that I find boring. Leave it up to sylvia to be one of the few!

I can only hope that this paves the way for Randy vs Fedor… hear me out.
Tim and Big Nog can scrap it out with Kongo and AA for the title.
This means that Dana might put up the big bucks for Fedor to come over from M-1 (as they stated they would work with other organisations) for a fight with Randy.
This way if Randy looses its not as bigger deal as having the UFC champ being beaten by an outsider.
Can only hope.

Main event:
TBA
Undercard:
Hvywt.: Tim Sylvia (24-3) vs. TBA*
Hvywt.: Frank Mir (10-3) vs. Brock Lesnar (1-0)
155 lbs.: Tyson Griffin (10-1) vs. Gleison Tibau (15-4)*
185 lbs.: Terry Martin (16-3) vs. Marvin Eastman (14-7-1)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (25-7-2) vs. Thales Leites (12-1)*
185 lbs.: Alan Belcher (11-3) vs. Ricardo Almeida (8-2)*
205 lbs.: David Heath (7-2) vs. Tomasz Drwal (14-2)*
This is how I would make the card if I wanted to be the biggest event of the year:
Main Event:
Noguerra vs. Arlovski for the interim Heavyweight title
Undercard:
Tim Sylvia vs. Cheik Kongo
Forrest Griffin vs Keith Jardine
Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir
Nate Marquardt vs. Thales Leites
Untelevised bouts:
155 lbs.: Tyson Griffin (10-1) vs. Gleison Tibau (15-4)*
185 lbs.: Terry Martin (16-3) vs. Marvin Eastman (14-7-1)
185 lbs.: Alan Belcher (11-3) vs. Ricardo Almeida (8-2)*
205 lbs.: David Heath (7-2) vs. Tomasz Drwal (14-2)*
Now thats a good solid event!
Also Keith Jardine vs. Forrest is rumored to be on this card, but it might just be a rumor. However both fighters havent fought since September 22, are healthy, not scheduled to appear on any other upcoming card…So this may become a reality. It would make sense and probably be better than the first time they fought since both guys have grown a lot since their last fight!

I don’t think I could handle Big Tim and Marquardt both being televised on the same event.

i think andre arlovski is more deserving to have a title shot than tim silvia right now, if it is not just because of the contract issue right now on arlovski,i think he’s the one who’ll fight big nog for the HW title. i hope arlovski will be next in line for the title shot

UFC is not going to give Arlovski a fight until he extends his contract. Otherwise, they risk M-1 outbidding them setting up an Arlovski vs. Fedor bout for M-1. On the upside, if Arlovski beat Fedor, it would prove the UFC has the best fighters, which the UFC already knows but not all fans do. On the downside, the UFC would have just handed M-1 a more exciting HW champ than it will have. Big Tim’s deer season went well. That’s about as exciting to know as watching him fight.

What exactly has AA done recently, by which I mean in the last two years, to warrant an immediate title shot? He’s had snoozefests against Werdum and Big Tim, and that bizarre international incident against Pe De Pano, along with a KO loss to Tim. He needs to get his contract finalized and get at least one, maybe two good aggressive wins like the AA of old before he gets a title shot.

here we go again with the ufc fighter are better than the pride fighters, they are all good, their are pride fighters that came in and are champs and some that came in and are chumps, but their are good fighters from both pride and ufc, lets leave this be for a while

Nog in my opinion does not deserve a title shot at this point but i guess theres no other choice but to make him champion since couture is gone

I’m not so sure it’s a given that Bignog would beat Sylvia. i could see sylvia knocking him out. I really think Kongo would beat Sylvia and i think kongo versus nog could go either way

Tim Sylvia versus Cheech Kongo on feb 2nd!!! haha cheech
Haha. Yeah I remember the post fight interview with Rogan and the press conference. A reporter goes: “What matchup do you think makes most sense for you at this point in time?”
Slyvia: “I think myself and CHETCH for the no.1 contender.”
Reporter: “His name is Cheick, not Chetch.”
Sylvia: “Well I’ll call him whatever the hell I want.” (Albeit jokingly).

I agree with you about him unleashing the fists of fury he has but, the ufc wont let him fight man damn that talented fighter is going to waist hes going to be rusty its going to add preassure to him the longer his return is, i hope he fights soon they should make that fight card all heavyweights, Lesnar vs Mir, Arlovsky vs TBA, Noguera vs Sylvia, Cro cop vs TBA, headlined Couture vs UFC

Nog did not impress in the big debut aGainst Herring. And really… that kick in the later part of the first was technically sound, just not a lot of power in it’s delivery.
Give Nog props for shaking it off, but if it was a Sylvia delivered kick he wouldn’t have gotten up.
That being said, Sylvia has got to a better job guarding against the take down. If he can move like he did in Arlovski II, same hand speed and foot work, toss in some of the better Monson moments and the Vera conditioning it’s going to be tough for Nog to finish let alone score a decision.
I have to take Tim on this, even though i don’t really want too.
I would much prefer Kongo/Sylvia Nog/AA, but it’s just not going to happen.

TIM SYLVIA IS THE BIGGEST TERD HANDS DOWN. YES HE THINKS HES THE GREATEST BUT WATCH HIS PAST 5 FIGHTS. THE UFC WANTS TO DO SOMETHING BIG TO MAKE THE SPORT GROW. I THINK THAT THING IS TO NEVER TELEVISE A FIGHT OF TIMS AGAIN. THAT BIG GOOFY LOOKING TERD.

I hate that guy. i dont think there will ever be a more pathetic champion. he thought holdin onto that belt would make people like him and it just made me want someone to kick his ass more. i do wish randy finished the fight that way there would be no way tim could still be cocky but as shown b4 the vera fight he still is and as shown in the vera fight he’s still TERRIBLE!

Who the hell wants to see Tim champ again?, I was sooo happy when randy took his belt from him, Tim’s the ultimate in fighting safe and not laying in all down on the line and is so boring to watch.
by nathan on Dec 6, 2007 6:19 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
That’s crap…I think the UFC should bring back Andrei Arlovski to fight, Sylvia loss a clear-cut decision to Randy and won only one fight after losing the title. I think Sylvia should fight Cro Cop when his nose has healed.

Do we really have to keep watching Tim Silvia right. The guy is a loser both inside and outside the ring (steroids) and is plain boring to watch. Why does Joe keep this guy around? It’s painfully obvious no one wants to see him and he isn’t anywhere near being a championship contender. He’s portly, walks around the ring like a duck and puts people to sleep (the audience not his opponents).
