UFC 79: 'Nemesis' card complete with 10 fights slated for December 29 in Las Vegas

Matt Hughes vs Georges St pierre UFC 79
With just less than four weeks until showtime the card is now official for UFC 79: "Nemesis" on December 29 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to UFC.com.

The New Year's Eve blockbuster pay-per-view (PPV) event is also loaded with 10 fights -- most UFC cards are limited to nine bouts.

Here's how it looks:

Main Event:

Matt Hughes (41-5) vs. Georges St. Pierre (14-2) for the interim UFC Welterweight Championship

Main card (televised):

205 lbs.: Chuck Liddell (20-5) vs. Wanderlei Silva (31-7-1)
205 lbs.: Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (4-1) vs. Lyoto Machida (11-0)
155 lbs.: Rich Clementi (28-12-1) vs. Melvin Guillard (20-6-2)
Hvywt.: Eddie Sanchez (7-1) vs. Soa Palalei (8-1)

Under card (may not be broadcast):

205 lbs.: James Irvin (12-4) vs. Luis Cane (7-0)
155 lbs.: Manny Gamburyan (5-2) vs. Nate Mohr (8-4)
185 lbs.: Dean Lister (9-5) vs. Jordan Radev (11-2)
170 lbs.: Roan Carneiro (11-6) vs. Tony DeSouza (10-3)
155 lbs.: Doug Evans (5-1) vs. Mark Bocek (4-1)

Definitely a great show to end 2007.

great looking card but how did eddie sanchez make the televised portion of the card?

Eddie on the televised card is payback for stepping up vs. CroCop.

Thats what im sayin!!! After seeing him fight Cro Cop i never want to see this guy fight again. They shouldve put Roan Carneiro vs. Tony DeSouza on the televised card.

A great card that should set the tone for 2008!!!

I’d really like to see DeSouza fight. Too bad.

Also, I’d like to see how Manny has come along after his injury in the TUF finale. He looks like a solid fighter, if he can keep his body together.

I put the challenge out to the UFC and televise the entire night. It is teh NYE event for christ sake.

I would love to see James Irvin bang with another striker.

I agree. Rich Clementi isn’t even deserving to be on a PPV main card, never mind on the main card of the “Year End Blockbuster Event”.

I actually think that Eddie Sanchez vs Salt Peppa is the worst fight on the card. ANY one of the undercards has bigger names than this.

by ViolentMike on Dec 5, 2007 3:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Whats this complaining about Eddie Sanchez? The guy is still 7-1 and 2-1 in the UFC. You can’t hold it against the guy that he got drilled by Cro Cop before the CC myth got shattered.

You stole the words right outta my fingers. Other than that good card though. Maybe they wanted a HVywt fight on there.

James Irvin brings it everytime, provided his knee doesn’t blow out.

Manny has many more fans than Eddie Sanchez and Rich Clementi combined.

Dean Lister is usually really slick, and who doesn’t want to see Jordan Radev get KO’d unconcious for 15 minutes?

Roan vs DeSouza is going to be a sweeeeeeet BJJ match. Please get this on the main card.

Doug Evans looked good against Huerta, better than I’ve ever seen Dirty Sanchez.

by ViolentMike on Dec 5, 2007 3:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They should have put the Dean Lister fight on there.

cool 10 fights, i will be there glad they added another fight with worthless fights on the card. only three are worthy of being on main card rest are ufc fight night material but i will take 10 fights any day way to end the year in a bang

by bryant on Dec 5, 2007 3:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Who cares what the first two fights of the night are. I would pay 40 bucks just to see the Three BIG FIGHTS
Like COme those fights in the same card, this should be call UFC 79 STACKED 2
Minus all the steriods
I think!
hahahhahaah

Why is Eddie Sanchez on the main card? He’s shown nothing spectacular to be on live ppv. I’d rather see Lister/Radev.

by JPonton on Dec 5, 2007 3:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I am actually glad to see Eddie on there.

by JB on Dec 5, 2007 3:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Asides from the top 3 fights…this card is full of fights that have absolutely no impact on any of their respected divisions. Plus there aren’t many up and comer fighters on the rest of this card. I would have liked to have seen the Bocek and Evans fight televised myself. Guillard is a good fighter but putting him in with Clementi on the main card is ridiculous. That’s a UFN undercard at best.

by Buster Bluth on Dec 5, 2007 3:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think everyone is thinking the same thing. After the CC fight his interview was funny. He was like he’s not the no.2 ranked heavyweight in the world for nothing. I think pretty soon he’ll be wearing that belt around his waist…Etc etc. Then one day I can rematch him and hopefully win that belt or something to that effect. Quality stuff.

by RobH86 on Dec 5, 2007 3:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I would pay much more than $40 to see Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell slug it out on a card all by itself. Everything else is just frosting on the cake.

by ViolentMike on Dec 5, 2007 3:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I had hoped the Irvin fight would be televised. Still, very solid card. I just wish there was a way to see the undercard fights on TV

by FFL on Dec 5, 2007 4:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Also, it maybe an unpopular opinion, but I predict Lyoto winning second round via stoppage or submission over Soko. Soko may be the hardest hitting 205 out there, but we have yet to see how he handles the cage, the crowd and the ground

Agreed. Id like to see any of the undercard fights instead of the Dirty Sanchez fight. Glad to see Guillard making hos return. I just hope he workde hard on his ground game cuz if he did he is a huge threat to almost any lighweight.

BIG JOHN is having a press conference to announce that he is ‘retiring’. I wonder if Randy Couture had anything to do with this?

So now we know why we kept on seeing that wierdo and that gigantic bald dude referee at UFC 78. I just thought Big John didn’t feel like traveling to New Jersey!

by ViolentMike on Dec 5, 2007 4:16 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Id much rather see doug evans and Manny on the main card. Evans really impressed me against Huerta earlier this year, he definitely won the first round.

Jersey mandates that the UFC uses New Jersey officials. They can’t use the regular UFC refs.

Big John retiring? Just as the UFC is starting to break big. I wonder what he’s got up his sleeves?

You got that right. I’m still trying to rally a movement to change Manny’s nickname from Pitbull to the more apt British Prostitute, as in he gets on top of people and moves around just enough to avoid being stood up but not enough to finish the job. Who’s with me?

I LOVE IT PW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great way to end my day…

I am surprised that no one has talked about the final episode of TUF tonight? Who will get injured? Who will get highlight reel KO’d? Who will fight at the finale? I REALLY wish that Matt Arroyo would get injured and replaced by Richie Hightower, and Hightower is matched up with Mac in the semi’s. That would be GREAT!!! Did you all notice how much crap Hightower talks? And that laugh of his, OMG – just kill me now. Before the whole ‘upperdecker tussle’ began, when Mac and Hightower were going at it, they cut to an interview of Hightower pretty much saying that Mac is a puss, and he only talks smack when all of Team Hughes is there to hold him back. LOL – what a JOKE!!!! Mac would completely school Hightower in every single aspect of mma and life.

I really wish they’d show the entire card on the PPV. Heck I’d pay another $10 or whatever within reason to see the entire card. After all you can pay $2/fight for the undercard on UFC.com but I’d much rather see the fights live on TV. I’d guess the production and PPV costs outweigh the benefits of hard core fans paying for the undercard. That doesn’t mean I can’t hope for it.

Did you guys see the fight card pictures on the web link? Does that Doug Evans guy just look like a killer or what?? I heard his only MMA experience was submitting his band teacher in high school, then putting another student in a kamura when he wouldn’t give up his band chair.

i only wish James Irvin would be televised… lets hope GSP gets an early K.O so they’ll have enough time left over to put the Irvin fight on as well.

Melvin by viscious KO! hes currently training at saul solis’ gym where in houston where i train at. Hes looks to be focus and in great shape plus the whole cocky attitude has tunned down a bit after getting submitted by “daddy” in seconds.

FINALLY. I’ve wanted an octagon necklace for AGES now, it’s about time… HA! They should advertise it “For the man (or woman) who has everything.” They should also put it on the right hand side of the site under the section “But wait, there’s more!” Is Billy Mays doing infomercials for them now?

If it could be set to some loud reggae music there is a GSP poem on The Bleacher Report that would make a new entrance song for Georges. Maybe not as great as Rampages, but hey. . . any cool musicians out there?

Sounds like a great idea to me Phil. But then you would have Eddie Sanchez’s family of 1,546 people be voting all day for him to make it on to the PPV.

Someone also mentioned charging an extra $10 for the PPV to see ALL the undercard fights. This is an idea that I had a while back that I REALLY wish that they can do, beginning the PPV at 8pm. But, unfortunately, I don’t ever see them doing it. I very rarely go on to UFC on Demand to pay $2 for an undercard fight. I will admit that I have done it several times, but I wish they would at least be available immediatley after the PPV. So when it ends, you can go right to the computer and watch the fight before knowing who won by reading the forums. BUT the morons at UFC.com post the results of the fight right next to where you have to click to order it. HOW DUMB IS THAT? In most cases we are buying the fight to see who won, how they won, and when they won. The website tells you everything prior to viewing it.
