UFC Quick Quote: Georges St. Pierre thoughts on taking UFC 79 fight with Matt Hughes on short notice

"What I gain is that I can beat Hughes and show I'm the best in the world, and then I'll get Serra. I was going to fight both of them eventually but now it's just in a different order. After Hughes, I will get my revenge on Serra. It is the perfect scenario for me.... It's the biggest fight of my career."

I think GSP will take out Hughes. He has a more well rounded game where as Hughes is one dimensional. Thats the same reason that Silva will destroy Chuck.

I actually feel bad for Hughes. He, and a lot of people, wanted to see him beat the snot out of Serra and regain his WW belt one last time. However, now I don’t ever see him regaining the WW belt. If Hughes beats GSP (HIGHLY unlikely), then all is good for Hughes – he gets the belt, and he gets to fight Serra. If Hughes loses to GSP and GSP then beats Serra, they can then have Hughes/Serra. BUT what if Serra shocks the world again? Then we’ll never see Hughes/Serra.
If Hughes is unable to re-capture the WW belt, I see him moving up to MW to fight Anderson Silva after he fights Serra.

This is the welterweight version of Randy and Chuck.
I will take GSP round 4 TKO.

Ummm. My favorite mma fighter would be GSP, but this should be a great match. I really can’t predict who will win. Getting a little annoyed by everyone saying who will win, go put your 2 weeks pay check if your so confident.

difference is that hughes does not have knock out power and chuck does and silva loves to bang so i see silva clinching liddell trying to throw those knees and getting a big ass uppercut woobles and liddell landing a nice 1,2 combo to dropp him, buya first round ko

4 weeks of training is probably shorter than GSP is use to but at 26 years old he only needs a couple of good weeks of training to be ready.
I mean this guy is a top level fighter and has been now for quite a few years I am sure he is in fairly good shape. The physical is going to be there no doubt but the mental is probably what takes longer. As for game plan he has fought Hughes before and I have a feeling he will try to do to Matt what he did to Kos. So as for the mental aspect it won’t be nearly as difficult for him to prepare because he has fought Hughes twice.
So I can’t see him using this as an excuse if he loses.

Hughes will fight Serra again. I’m not exactly sure how it will happen or under what scenario, but the UFC isn’t going to pump the amount of money that they did into “Hughes vs. Serra” not to have that fight happen.
Let’s say GSP beats Hughes (2.5 to 1 favorite), then he’ll logically fight Serra. If GSP beats Serra for the belt, then right there you have it: Hughes vs. Serra.
If Serra retains his belt over GSP, then it becomes a little trickier to imagine the scenario, I admit. But nonetheless, there’ll be some way to get Hughes back in the picture. There’s always a Chris Lytle waiting in the wings who Hughes can lay on top of for three rounds, in order to get another title shot.
Plus, if Hughes actually pulls off the upset over GSP, then he’ll face Serra in a unification bout.
The UFC will find a way to make that fight happen. With as much smack as Serra talked during the TUF6 series, and as dumb as he made Hughes look, there are just too many people who want to see that fight for it not to happen. I’m not even a Hughes OR Serra fan, and I would pay a crap-ton of money to see that fight.

Here’s a very exciting possible scenario:

If GSP lets this turn into a grappling match, it could mean bad news for GSP. I hope that Georges controls the action like he did at UFC 65. I most definitely think that GSP can hang with Hughes on the ground, but i think keeping Matt out of his element is key for this fight. This isn’t Josh Koscheck we’re talking about here. Keep Hughes on his feet and it’s a sealed deal.

This is how I see it:
Matt Hughes defeats GSP via a shocking TKO in the 3rd round.
Matt Hughes defends his welterweight against Matt Serra winning by Split Decision
Than there is one more fight that makes ANY sense
MATT HUGHES vs BJ PENN III. (THIS FIGHT CARD SHOULD BE CALLED “NEMESIS”.
BJ PENN will defeat Matt Hughes via submission in Round 3, and become the UNDISPUTED WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION.
PS: Then hopefully we can see a phenomenal 2nd fight between BJ PENN and GSP.

Matt Hughes defends his welterweight against Matt Serra winning by Split Decision
Are you serious? Sat that fight happens and if it goes the distance, I don’t see how any way Serra wins a decision, the longer this goes the better it is for Hughes; he as been in too many championship fights and proven he can last five rounds. Serra’s only real chance of winning would be to catch a submission in the earlier rounds before fatigue and sweat set in, or the punchers chance. Matt Hughes has NEVER (capitalized for emphasis) lost a decision, and I sincerely doubt Serra would be the first to do so

GSP showing his unparalleled sportsmanship yet again. This fight is going to be quite a war on the ground, if it gets there, and a target practice for GSp if it stays standing. However, lets not underestimate Hughes: like Silva is getting his ground game resturctured by Couture, Matt may be doing the same with his striking. Who know´s we´ll see, I´m all for GSP

Predictions
Gsp wins via tko in the 3rd round after some close calls and hughes gets gsp down once or twice and I see this fight as sort of back and forth and not one sided like there second fight.
Gsp fights serra and is very aggressive mixing in up well and keeps serra guessing not knowing whether he’s going shoot or strike. Its pretty much a one sided fight until serra shoots on gsp and gets head kicked for his trouble and gsp wills by tko late in the second.
Hughes then fights serra and wins a boring decision, holding serra down for most of the fight.
Fitch fights karo for a title shot at gsp and defeats karo via decision. Fight wins fight of the night.
Gsp fights fitch and wins via decision, a very exciting fight that goes back and forth.

I REALLY can’t see hughes catching gsp on his feet, he’s NEVER caught anyone. Serra does have heavier hands than hughes and has quick punches, he dropped both karo and gsp in the first and commands respect on his feet and I guarantee gsp won’t underestimate him again. Only way I can see hughes winning is by catching gsp in a submission, yes all fighters have punchers chance but I would say hughes punchers chance is under 1% with serra’s being 10% if gsp is focused and prepared and more like 25% if gsp isn’t. Hughes in my opinion has the WORST foot work of ANY welter weight even in his recent videos of him training he looks horrible on his feet. If this fight stay’s standing expect it to end fairly quickly, gsp is several levels ahead of hughes on there feet, if hughes can’t get gsp down, see gsp vs hughes 2.

I agree with this, hughes is no chump but he’s counted on his wrestling and strength advantage to take down his opponents for pretty much all of his 43 wins. Gsp is a night mare for hughes style wise he’s just as strong if not stronger and is probably a better wrestler than hughes, and is a much better striker. He’s just a poor match up with gsp and to be honest I would much rather see him fight serra because I wanted him to win back his belt one last time and I wanted hughes to get some pay back on serra with all his mouthing off.

Yeah GSP is the perfect kind of guy to handle a short notice fight well. He is a very athletic guy naturally, guys like him, and Kos, don’t even really need to train hard to be in descent shape, they are easily the best candidates for short notice fights, I don’t think it will effect him much at all.

gsp is going to wreck hughes. seriously, the ONLY chance hughes has of winning this fight is getting georges down BEFORE georges gets hughes down. hughes’ chance of getting georges down is significantly less than vice versa; georges td defense and athleticism is insane. hughes on the other hand will be facing a takedown artist who has gotten everybody down when he wanted to with ease. does matt have td defense? against st. pierre i doubt it.
and obviously st. pierre’s standup is lightyears ahead of matts. i just don’t see where hughes can really finish this fight. georges is just so good everywhere. i do think hughes could potentially hold georges down, but he won’t be able to do it for the whole fight, and he won’t be able to do much damage without risking position. this fight will not go past the 3rd.

You obviously didn’t watch their previous fight—ok so Penn won round one—he got completely dominated the rest of the fight, gassing in the 3rd as usual. Fatigue is fatigue. Whether its from getting hit or expending energy the result is the same. Karo actually won his fight with Diego, winning the first two rounds, but looked so tired by the end the judges had no choice but to rule in favor of Diego.

True, GSP is a great fighter and will be around a long time, but he hasn’t accomplished nearly what Hughes has, and anyone writing Hughes off is a dumbass! You either have very short term memory, or your hatred of Matt has blinded you. Either way, you’re dumbasses.

I just watched the Hughes vs Gracie fight again. That was awesome! Hughes totally dominated him and made him look bad. I hated how Gracie always held his submissions an extra 3 or 4 seconds after the tapout, so I’m glad he got his ass kicked by Hughes!
True, GSP is a great fighter and will be around a long time, but he hasn’t accomplished nearly what Hughes has, and anyone writing Hughes off is a dumbass! You either have very short term memory, or your hatred of Matt has blinded you. Either way, you’re dumbasses.
It’s going to be a great fight, no matter who wins.
Watch UFC 65 and witness TOTAL DOMINATION. GSP has Hughes number.

GSP is looking PAST Hughes and THAT is a big no no. That can end up costing him dearly. Watch Hughes teach him never to do that, Hughes ain’t no push over.
He sure looked like a pushover at UFC 65. GSP won’t underestimate Hughes, He considers him the best guy he’s fought so far.

Yup. GSP always speaks highly of Matt Hughes, even after he beat him.
