UFC 79: Sorry Chuck, Paulo Filho ain't no ho

Paulo Filho
Props: Tatame.com

Quoteworthy:

"I would never train with an American to fight with a Brazilian. I am not a slut or a prostitute."

Word on the street is that the camp the represents former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell reached out to World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) Middleweight Champion, Paulo Filho, to come in and help prepare the "Iceman" for his showdown with Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79: "Nemesis" on December 29. Filho -- a Brazilian just like Silva -- apparently didn't like that idea so much.

In the weeds: Filho will put his undefeated record on the line and make his first WEC title defense against Chael Sonnen on December 12, 2007, LIVE on the VERSUS network.

does this mean chuck finally realized he need to expand his training from his usual camp?

by greg on Nov 28, 2007 2:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

So surprised this came from Chuck….He always seemed confident to make it on his own every fight to always end it with a knockout. 2 losses in a row must really change the man’s way of thinking. Would do him some good, too, he could win this.

Very unprofessional IMO. If he was friends or training partners I would understand the loyalty. I havn’t found any information citing that he has trained with W.Silva but does have a link with Gonzaga who at one point trained with Chute Box. I could be wrong, If I am, I take back my comment.

thats so funny he said that it really dosent matter much who chuck trains with because chuck is on his way out and Wanderlei Silva will destroy him and keep his losing streak going 0 for 3 baby !!!!

chuck should get a hold of anderson, the actually good silva. either way filho should show up ringside on the 29th and watch in horror as wanderlei’s ugly head lands in his stupid fucking lap.

Paulo Filho has no ties with Wandi other than both being brazilian..Patrioticlly..that’s cool I respect his views..but today’s world of MMA it should criscross all boundries and ethic groups..I don’t know what being a “ho” has to do with it?? Wandi was training with Couture before he fought Gonzaga..this is a sport and business..I would understand more if they were teamates(former)..homeboys..peeps..2nd cousins..but if just because their both from Brazil..I disagree with Paulo on this one..and I’m Brazilian.

If Randy would turn down Wand to help him train, becuase Chuck is an American, that would be racist…its actually pretty stupid, Werdum has helped Crocop, many other brazilians have helped amercians..i even think Frank Mir went to Brazil and trained with Filho at one point…its just an ignorant statement…either way, i think chuck will be fine on the ground if for some reason the fight goes there, but i think he will get the KO either way

Ur right Gonzaga was a former chute box memeber..and that didn’t stop Wandi from training with Couture..I heard though Wandi got bad brazilian press when Forrest was going to fight Shogun..cuz he was at the gym as Forrest.

Paulo Filho is in the WEC for a reason. Let’s just leave it at that. I got $47 in my pocket is that enough for a hand job Paulo ?

What a ball bag seriously he says this crap as if he is above Americans. Go smoke a joint with the likes of Johnny Depp.

this fights still up in the air to me,i think silva is the better fighter but he is coming off back to back knock outs and chuck could still knock out anyone if it lands and his take down defense is probally the best out there not that vandy needs to get it to the ground.i am sure this fight ends in a knock out not sure witch one though.

It looks like you got to this before I did, Phil. It is very unprofessional to discreminate someone because of their nationality. I really thought the sport was beyond this. As mentioned above by others, brazilians and americans have been training together for fights for years.

By his own line of logic, should the U.S. based WEC and UFC not allow non U.S. fighters to compete? Or maybe TUF should not offer to let foreign born fighters on the show to train. I like Paulo as a fighter, but his stock has definitely dropped in my books

by FFL on Nov 28, 2007 2:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think Paulo is limiting himself which is stupid and anyone else that believes in this type of “NATIONALISM”…

It is not racism though, it is NATIONALISM, White people love to cry reverse racism these days…

I also think it is stupid when people chant USA! USA!

F**K NATIONALISM

But then again, how come so many people were rooting for GSP (Canada) against Kos (USA…All AMerican Wrestler etc….could it be because he is halfrican?)

Chuck is grasping at straws trying to find a way not to loose 3 in a row. If he haden’t pissed off as many people as he has in the UFC then he might be able to train with someone there. Instead since he’s kicked most of there asses and then went on to talk smack about his past opponents there is no one that is willing to help him. He’ll probably end up pulling a Ken Shamrock and go to work for Vince McMahon.

by bodayong on Nov 28, 2007 3:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Who really cares?

Anyway, chuck needs paulo’s help way more than paulho needs chuck. Chuck is a few losses away from being in the "washed up " category, while Filho is a rising star who probably has yet to reach his full potential.

I wasn’t going to comment about this article but after reading everyone else’s comments I feel like I need to voice my opinion too.

Honestly, who cares? Filho is one of the top pound for pound fighters in the world, anyone who cares to disagree should check out any promotion other than the UFC sometime. I mean it’s true that the UFC has some of the best fighters in the world, but not all of them and Filho is in that category (as well as Kang).

Whoever’s idea it was about Filho not getting a VISA…are you kidding me?! Yea you’re probably right, the US government will deny Filho a VISA because he doesn’t want to be the Chuck’s sparring partner…HA

And for those of you who think Paulo Filho is in the WEC because he isn’t good enough for the UFC… IMO besides Hendo, Filho is the only guy in the world who has a shot against ASilva at MW.

The only bad thing that will come from all this is that stubborn Americans will all start hating on the Brazilians now…come on people…do you really care that much if Filho wants to train with Chuck or not?

No worries, Chuck is a grown man and I’m sure he’s been shot down before, I don’t think he’s losing sleep about it.
He’s got some real good sparring partners right now. It’s the jiu-jitsu he may have problems with, I don’t think it’s Wanderlei’s game plan to stand and throw, he may in fact try to catch Chuck off guard and go for a takedown. Either way I believe Ice will take Wandy out!

IMO the issue is that he won’t train with an American vs. a Brazilian. People should not bias off of nationality. This is as stupid as when people jump on the bandwagon of a fighter just becasue he is the same nationality or the tools who chant “USA”. Being patriotic is great, having pride from where you are from is fantastic, but to make a distinction based purely off nationality is quite ignorant. Okay, off my soap box now.

Working collaboratively with M-1 Global and now HERO’S parent company Fight Entertainment Group, the New Year’s Eve card at Saitama Super Arena will see two time HERO’S 154-pound champion Gesias Calvancante (Pictures) take on Shooto world champion Shinya Aoki (Pictures), while current DEEP champion Hidehiko Hasegawa (Pictures) will take on Hayato “Mach” Sakurai.

Monte cox has been working with nobuhiko Takada to put this card together..I really wantto see Gesias “JZ” fight against shinya akoi! Well the UFC lost Mach Sakura…I wonder how bad Dana White tried to low ball him.

Anyone have any clue as to when, and where takanori Gomi will fight next? Has he even fought since PRIDE?

Actually, I remember seeing a video at youtube with filho dissing wandy, because wandy said something when filho was injured and could not fight at pride’s tournament. He was really pissed off too, so I’m pretty sure they’re not boys, and it’s really just a patriot thing. Who cares, really. F… it, some fighters say good things, others say silly things. Everyone has a different personality, and this is his. He will eat his words one day when an american fighter chooses not to train with him for an important fight (he is training with napão at teamlink).

Lol, Does anyione else get the feeling that Filho spit on the ground after he made that comment. Ha! If Filho has such a distaste for Americans he may wanna find somewhere else to live and work. Probably should give back all that filthy American money as well. There’s nothing wrong with a little national pride but… maybe something was lost in translation. by bryant on Nov 28, 2007 5:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

You know, I was just going through the interview in Portuguese and I have to point something that was not quoted here. The correct translations is as follows:

“Yes, I was invited but did not accept. I would never train an American to defeat a Brazilian. I’m not a ho, a prostitute. It’s us against the gringos. I’ve just come from there [US] and I’ve seen that the American athlete has everything he needs [to train], and here in Brazil it is the total opposite. So why should I train with the Americans? I’m Brazilian “till I die.”

The reason he does not want to train with chuck is not just because he is American, it is because he feels Americans have better training facilities, which the Brazilians do not have. This is how he feels, but I don’t know why this matters in this case, since wandy is training at extreme couture…

by linx on Nov 28, 2007 5:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The wec event on the 12th looks really good the main card anyway, I’m definetly checking it out.
Faber over curran- Faber is too good, strong, and crafty
I’ve seen quite a bit of Fabers fights, I’m definetly a fan.
Paulo and chael sonnen should be excellent I like both the sonnen-karo fight in the ufc was classic.
but I hope Paulo wins to increase the chance of him coming to the UFC.
Cub Swanson and Jens Pulver is the fight I’m most excited about I’m pretty sure I’ve seen all of Cubs fights and I’m going for him against pulver.
