UFC Quick Quote: Mirko Cro Cop to return at UFC 80?

"I think my next fight is going to happen in January."
-- Heavyweight Mirko Cro Cop speculates via his personal Web site that he will return sometime in January (no opponent was named). UFC 80: "Rapid Fire" -- scheduled for January 19 in Newcastle, England -- would appear to be the most likely event in which the Croatian would participate. That card, according to our UFC 80 fight card, is at eight bouts and is awaiting the final piece of the puzzle. This could be it.
Note: This is from about two weeks ago but was never posted here at MMAmania.com until now. We still felt the need to pass along the possible news.

I’m looking forward to seeing CroCop again, why, I’m not sure, especially after his last 2 performances. But I am hoping to see him bounce back and be the killer he has been in the past. He should fight a scrub so we can see an exciting KO.

They have Cro Cop fight in England b/c he’s European.

It’ll be interesting to see who he gets matched up against this time around. After suffering two straight loses, they’ll probably throw the guy a bone and give him somewhat of a nobody so he can regain some confidence and if he wins give him a decent fighter after that so maybe he can begin climbing the ladder again. He definitely needs to prove himself in his next fight cause if he loses again…I bet he’ll retire this time which would be a sad ending to an otherwise great career.

Give him Brad Imes or Heath Herring. Keep him away from Jake O’Brien, who would take him down and win a decision. Andre Arlovski would make an intriguing matchup.

dam he’s gonna be in england again, not good after his last 2 losses were here. 3rd time lucky hopefully – is vera’s hand sorted yet – vera v crocop would be sweet! i dont think, like someothers do that crocop should fight a lower tier fighter, hes world class, simple as that – give him the solid guys – id rather see him fight sylvia than arlovski – AA deserves a shot at the title so would make no sence against CC – anyhow i hope CC gets a KO win whoeva he fights

I for one am not ready to count cro cop out just yet. This guy terrorized opponents for years. Ok he got kicked in the head, it happens, and was fighting a decent fight vs. Kongo until his ribs got broken. Throw him Heath Herring, whom he has alreadfy beaten. If a fight isn’t announced soon, then I dont think he will be on the UFC 80 card, because as of now he would only have 2 months to train. It has to get signed now, if he wants to be ready in time for UFC 80.

Even though I am a huge Crocop fan and started getting into mma and pride/ufc beacause of a highlight reel I saw of him 4 years ago. I am sad to say that he may not be the high tier fighter we always thought he was. First off, pride fighters in all reality 85% of the time do not match up talent wise with UFC fighters, this has been prooven. (Exception: Rampage and a few others). Second when in the UFC you need more than one line of defense and offense, it seems Mirko has only the left high kick and straight left to use when he is in the octagon, he needs to get on the groung with Bj Penn for a year and not kick a single punching bag. Thirdly in Pride if you watch any of the Mirko fights, all of his opponents are backing away in fear of the left high kick, hence setting themselfs up for a devastating knock out. In the UFC you will not find anyone backing away from anybody out of fear, not to mention everybody is aware of his only weapon. I would love to Crocop rise to the top of the Ufc but I have a strong feeling in will not happen.

Cro cop vs Herring sounds good, AA I would love to see, but it makes no sense for AA after cro cop suffered two losses. AA vs Kongo sounds better.

I agree that Vera/CroCop would make a great fight…and would give Vera a huge boost after his loss to Tim – again, if his hand’s healed…and provided he wins. I like both these guys, but Herring would fill in nicely on this card as well…maybe he’s got that killer instinct in him again after watching the Big Nog fight slip away from him…cheers all.

Cro Cop really needs to be fed a can in his next fight, HOWEVER, take a look at the card for UFC 80, it SUCKS!!!!! You all thought that this past card was weak, but 80 takes the cake. Outside of BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson, this card has Gabe/Werdum and Marcus Davis/Jess Liaudin. I really don’t know much about Jess, but Marcus Davis has been the man of late, and I look forward to everyone of his fights. This card is filled with SHOULD BE prelimary bouts. Here is the card:
Main Event = BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson
Hvywt. Gabriel Gonzaga (8-2) vs. Fabricio Werdum (9-3-1)
170 lbs. Marcus Davis (13-3) vs. Jess Liaudin (12-8)*
155 lbs. Sam Stout (12-3-1) vs. Per Eklund (12-2-1)*
185 lbs Kendall Grove (8-4) vs. Jorge Rivera (14-6)*
170 lbs Paul Taylor (8-2-1) vs. Paul Kelly (6-0)*
205 lbs Alessio Sakara (11-6) vs. James Lee (12-2)*
205 lbs Antoni Hardonk (5-4) vs. Colin Robinson (8-3)*
Even a Cro Cop/Herring fight would not only be on the main card, but it would also be featured in the promo commercial and on Countdown. That is how weak this card truely is. I really don’t understand how the UFC can’t put together solid cards from month to month. Soooooo many fighters will be ready to go for January, yet none of their names are popping up. C’mon, even Chris Leben can fight against a can and still make the main card of this event. The Leben/Starnes fight could have been a co-main event…
Mania,
Has it been verified that UFC 80 will be free on Spike TV? Because I really don’t see too many people outside of the fans that order EVERY UFC PPV to be purchasing this one.

i agree with mike
since it is england and sandwiched between dec and feb pay per views they might do the sam formula like in aug and late sept they had the fight night and ufc in england free
i would think and hope that they give the jan for free on spike tv but with the fight night in jan who knows it might not happen. it is interesting to see the cards say pay per view on the fight cards if you look but for the jan it still doesn’t indicate whether it is on spike or pay per view

He needs to get out of this slump. If he loses this fight then he’s done. He could drop down a weight class but he would be in a tougher wieght class then he is in now. Hopefully it’s just a slump because this guy used to be an exciting fighter.

One of these days the UFC will get there moneys worth out of Cro Cop. He has been disappointing thus far. For a man with so many highlight reel KO’s in pride he has been very lackluster in his three fights in the UFC. They need to chose his opponent carefully. I guarantee you Arlovski would beat him.

I was hoping that the UFC would sign that young british fighter Paul daly I think his name is. He’s a 22 year old, black, muy tai specialist from england. I was hoping that he would make the pre lims but he isnt on it. The UFC needs to sign that kid, he is like a young Anderson Silva, I have been watching his cage Rage fights, and he looks like he has a promising future. He fights at 185.
I hope that Dana puts him on the next season of TUF featuring the middleweights because he is a very young and skilled fighter.

Brad Imes is not under contract with UFC.
Jake O’Brien may never fight again due to an injury.
They are going to give Cro-Cop somebody that is a prodominant striker, possibly a Heath Herring as some as you all have mentioned.
Hopefully it is somebody that is not Heath Herring because I like Herring, and I would hate to see him lose again.

Glad to c Cro Cop back. He was a beast in the 1st round of the Kongo fight, untill he brole his ribs and got hit with
6-7 low blows. I was shocked that he kept on fighting with broken ribs cuz it hurts just to breathe with broken ribs let alone fight a tall black frenchman. I hope Mirko can come in and finish this fight in the 1st round.
P.S. i hate this pic. It makes him look retarded.

All cro-cop needs is one massive performance on potentially free T.V in the states and he’ll be considered back in the mix in the fans eyes at least who want him to suceed.
Sure he may well be 3 or 4 fights away from a title shot but lets hope he gets through whoever he is matched up with.
Herring would be perfect I feel, will stand and bang and not pressure Cro-cop as much as his past two opponents.

If they give him a wrestler, they might as well say, “we don’t want him in the ufc after his fourth and final fight under contract.” We need it to be a guy who keeps the fight on his feet if it’s going to be exciting. And BTW, Vera would be a terrible matchup for CC, even if his hand weren’t healed in time.

They put Cro Cop against a striker in his last bout and he still didn’t do real well. I would like to see him fight Heath herring or Sylvia. mainly Herring because he likes to stand and trade. Cro Cop can make a highlight out of him and get him out of the UFC. I hope Cro Cop wins big in his next fight, no matter who he fights. I was so excited when he signed with the UFC and he hasn’t performed to hiss potential. The HW div. needs a little more excitement.

Almost all of the things you have mentioned is not accurate. The only information you have to prove Crocop is one of the best is the fact that he lost to Fedor, thats funny.

Yep and if you’ve ever seen him fight live you’ll realise the size of the Croatian contingent that follows him around. Huge fan base. It would suck for them if he had to fight in America. Then again it must have been a nightmare for the hardcore fans that travelled to Japan. England in comparison is a piece of cake. Shorter journey, cheaper travel and no jet lag.

Count on this: On the night of December 29th Dana White will walk into the Octagon and have one of two big announcements.
Scenario #1 Ladies and Gentleman I have exciting news: Randy Couture will fight Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueria in March for the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
Scenario #2 Ladies and Gentleman I have some big news: Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia will fight Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueria.
I think if nothing is said about the meeting between Randy and Dana in the next week that we will find out on the night of December 29th.

Cro Cop and Fedor are NOT what we thought they were. Average UFC fighters have proved this. “Fedor went toe to toe with Cro Cop and eeked out a decision”. Yeah, well Gabe Gonzaga man handled and beat down Crop Cop before knocking his head off and nearly snapping his ankle as he crumbled to the ground. Then he lost to a HW that was argueably not even Top 10 in Cheick Kongo. Kick to the nuts, broken rib or not. If Cro Cop showed up looking like we expected him to (as he did in PRIDE), he would have won both of those fights with ease. This all tells me is that Fedor isn’t really all THAT great. Doesn’t he still say today thet Cro Cop was his hardest fight? And look what the UFC has done to Cro Cop? They can’t even hand pick an inexperienced fighter and be confident that Cro Cop would beat him/her.

cro cop losing dosn’t prove anything about fedor, you could say that all pride fighters are not what we thought they where but others have done fine.cro cop has been in alot of wars and he has lost and been knocked out before even by smaller men(mcdonald).as you have said before yourself you can’t do mma math just cause cro cop lost does not say anything about fedor, and i think cro cop can still be one of the best but he has alot to prove in the ufc,but nothing to prove in his k-1 pride career where he faced the best.

- Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic a great fighter, his last three fights do not wipe ou a great career. A fighter is like a basketball team, they win and they loose, but their fights/matches become a summary that is called a career. So wether Mirko wins or loosed is not important to me and alot of other people as well, I appreciate what he has given of himself physically and mentally to make this “fighting” into a legitimate SPORT. Not to say that he is the only one there are others as well.
- Second thing, this orlovski guy, he’s a good fighter but c’mon man a better fighte than Mirko, Tim, Nogiera…etc. I don’t thinks so. - To all the fighters of UFC 80 good luck!
