What legacy? Emelianenko vs. Choi planned for New Year's Eve

By Jesse Holland
M-1 Global went from promising upstart to dead on arrival.
In a move that's sure to please diehard mixed martial arts (MMA) fans worldwide, PRIDE FC Heavyweight Champion, Fedor Emelianenko, is being courted by Japanese promoters for a New Year's "battle" against Hong Man Choi, according to Sherdog.com.
Who? That's exactly the point.
I'm all for non-exclusive contracts, but M-1 must really be hard up for cash to "lend" Fedor to another promotion before he even fights under the M-1 banner.
Isn't this supposed to be the superstar fighter to build a company around? And now he's for rent like a wood chipper?
I can just see the personal ad:
MWM seeks physical anomaly for fun times. Must like armbars and elitist fans. Non-fighter preferred, but open to trying new things. Your photo gets mine. No head games or UFC fans.
Here is a new opportunity to relive the glory that was Fedor's fight against Wagner "Zuluzinho" da Conceicao Martins (say that three times fast).
Only instead of a 400-pound amoeba, this time he'll be facing the Bride of Frankenstein.
Hong man Choi is the 7'2" Korean who was slated to face Brock Lesnar back in June at K-1 Dynamite. Choi was denied a fighting license after failing his pre-fight physical because of a pituitary gland problem that ensures he never stops growing.
Now Choi looks to keep his undefeated streak alive by upsetting the world's former number one heavyweight -- the most feared man on the planet -- and improving his impressive MMA record to 2-0.
Fedor, on the other hand, looks to keep his dominance alive by upsetting his last remaining fans. A win over Choi does nothing for Emelianenko and a loss could be disastrous for not only Fedor, but for the livelihood of M-1 Global.
It just doesn't make any sense.
Oh and by the way, Choi's nickname is "Techno Goliath."
You just can't make this stuff up.
***
UPDATE: Hayato "Mach" Sakurai, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Hidehiko Yoshida and Shinya Aoki could also compete on this New Year's Eve card, according to FightNetwork.com. Perhaps it's not so bad after all (sans the main event).

So.. we lose Fedor to this M-1 thing. Now we get THIS for his first fight? I really wish we could all just forget about Fedor… I will start to refer to him in past tense… like someone who has passed away… “Boy.. wasn’t he great”.. We may never get to see him against top talent again, only guys who the UFC doesn’t want to resign, or didn’t want in the first place.

So much for considering me the #1 fighter in the world. With competition like that, it will be hard to make a case for Fedor to retain his #1 ranking. People complain about non-exclusive contracts, but there is something to be said for them also. I don’t see M-1 surving or let alone try to build themselves as a legitimate competing organization to the UFC. The “rent-a-fighter” contract will be their demise.

I would hardly say WHO in regards to Hong Man-Choi he is very well known in Japan and the fight makes sense for NYE (the biggest event of the year), the Japanese are all about the merit of the spectacle not necessarily the merit. Anyway would be brilliant if Hong man beat him.

Its funny how japanese put Fedor up against these gigantic fighters like Choi and that giant black dude so that it looks like the fight is a complete mismatch and the bigger guy is going to kill Fedor…..and so when Fedor does knock them the hell out everyones like damn hes soo awesome cause he knocked out a guy that was 3-5 times his size. In reality it is actually a better matchup to put him up against someone his size with tons of skill. FEDOR IS NOT #1. I dont give a damn what anybody says. EDDIE SANCHEZ is #1..lol. jk

the interesting thing here is that the tale of the tape might list Hong Man Choi at 7’2", but since he never stops growing, he could be 8’7" by the end of the second round.

This fight is more for Fedor continuing his trend of entertaining the Japenese people, by fighting on New Years Eve. This fight is for them, not for Americans.
The Japanese know of Choi from his days in K-1/MMA and of Fedor from MMA. This is designed to sell to them, not to the self-centred American fan who thinks it’s only about entertaining them.

Secon, Choi is not such a bad opponent. He’s one of the best fighter in K-1. He’s got great striking skills and power. Those who fought with him say it’s like hitting a tree.

Speaking of jokesters, your boy, Hong Man Choi, weighs over 350 pounds. So unless he can cut about 90 lbs, we won’t be seeing him in the UFC. Somebody at Hong Man Choi’s height CANNOT be athletic enough to seriously compete in MMA. The only fight I would like to see Hong Man Choi in is against Antonio Big Foot Sylva. Big Foot would literally KILL him. Speaking of Big Foot, he just fought his last fight at 265 lbs, so HE can make HW, but not Hong Man Choi.

Since when is winning 1 fight a “streak”? Also, how impressive would a record of 2-0 be? Well, if the his second win does come from Fedor then yeah, it would be impressive.
How does Choi go from being matched up with Lesnar, who was making his mma debut, to fighting Fedor who it the best heavyweight in the world? Pretty big step up in competition if you ask me.

VM – your clearly a hardcore UFC fan – but i couldnt care less id Choi came to the UFC, this move with Fedor is just the start of MMA growing without the UFC or any of its restrictions – maybe the UFC should have a super heavy weight , maybe not, but this just gives other organistaions the chance to do something different.

Fedor is losing credibility by doing the fight (argue all you want, the proof is in the postings; half of the people posting on this blog used to be Fedor fans) He gains nothing by the fight. He is expected to win, and if somehow (100 to 1 chance) he lost, he falls of the MMA planet.

Fedor had a chance to fight the best in the world but went out like a bitch. This M-1 gig won’t last, the guy chose the path of least resistence, he’s so on love with his own legend that he’s having his handlers choose the weakest opponents they can find. Give it time, Fedor will drop his guard and will lose. Randy would have smashed him!

Couture would’ve kicked his ass and so would plenty of other HWs in the UFC at the minute
i thoght you said be 100%honest, fedor went to m1 for the money like alot of people would have done, he has already proven himself.and there not alot of people in the ufc that could beat him only randy and gonzaga would stand a chance the rest that could are orginally from pride and have already lost to him, and he is not a boring fighter, so if your going to say be honest than please be honest.

But NOT in MMA. His one mma win is against Bobby Ologun. I’d hardly call him a ‘real vet’. Unless he recently quit fighting and got his veterinary license.

Well said.

On one of the last threads, people were calling Fedor “God” “the best there ever was” and so on. They also criticized anyone who thought fedor was simply laying low in fighting lesser talent. Where as guys in the UFC are constantly asking for the toughest figthers.
Until Fedor fights a real challenger I’m out.

I will be rooting for the ‘Techno Goliath’ to do the ‘Electric Boogaloo’ all over Fedor. I will not be buying this fight, if anyone does – you are either retarded or still have your mouth wrapped around Fedor’s nuts, BUT I will definitely be rooting for Fedor to lose. The odds of him losing are probably about 1,000,000,000,000 to 1, but hey, that’s still a puncher’s chance!
I have stated on this site that I would pretty much pay $40 bucks to see Fedor fight anyone. But not to fight this guy. This has to be a joke. The best fighter in the world, after being absent from the ring for a year, is comming back to fight this Giant goofball? Fedor must really not care about his legacy, because I am a huge supporter of his but come on. Right about now Pedro Rizzo doesnt seem like such a bad opponent anymore. Hopefully he will drop in the rankings, and maybe that will light a fire under his ass to get to the UFC and fight someone decent.
Dana White has to be laughing his ass off over this news!

But they are probably matching Sakurai up with Julie Kedzie and Aoki up with Wayne Weems…

its funny how alot of you talk shit on fedor and say he has not fought anyone in 2yrs,then call randy #1.don’t get me wrong i like randy and would want to see him beat fedor than nog than retire the best but that won’t happen.you say randy is the best h.w who has he beaten tim sylvia(he’s good but definetly not great),gonzaga he may be great but has alot to prove the only noteworthy person he beat is crocop who most of you say sucks now so what does that prove. he beat to middle rank h.w and you call him the best, you forget he went to lhw cause he got beat by barnett and ricco, wheres ricco now not in the ufc randy had to tap do to blows to the face.i hope randy beats them all but its not realistic.

Fedor doesnt care about the american view of his fighting pride was about the spectacle…Not just the fight itself but the show of it…Fedor is continuing his tradition and getting a win against a legit k1 striker in the process..And i swear the first person that wants to say choi isnt legit in k1 they need to be reminded of the fact that he stayed in ther against Jerome Le Banner

Wow, an entire paragraph without getting one fact straight. That is some kind of record! Chuck was in the middle his longest win streak at the top of his game, Randy, White and Fedor said it wasn’t about the money, it was about exclusive contract rights and promoting disputes. Finally, it is M-1 not K-1.
Mania, do you think you can put up an MMA IQ test that bloggers have to take before they are allow to make postings? Nevermind, that would destroy all the fun of getting to play Captain Condesendo. ROFL:):)

Why some of you are so serious and crying about everything?
Ok, Fedor is not at UFC as he should, but I think this fight is still interesting.
Size/strenght does matter. Why would there be otherwise weight classes? And do you really hate to watch a monsterman get beaten by more skilled much smaller man? It’s entertainment (still real mma fight, not wrestling)!
I am curious if Fedor will try to knock Choi out, only Mighty Moe has succesfully done that before.
Anyway… Fedor by RNC 1st round
Check out Choi at this japanese human tetris video!

it’s a fight that apparently could be had on short notice(how many top fighters would fight Fedor with only a month’s notice?) and the fans would pay to see.
Fedor haters need to hate intelligently, it’s getting really sad how low u have sunk.
The only time u comment is when the topic is about Fedor. We are not Fedor haters we are all entitled to our opinions so if you don’t like it start up your own little chat room for people that love Fedor and just talk about how great he is. He almost lost to cro cop, cro cop has done nothing in the UFC, if i were Fedor seeing how cro cop has been a bust I would be scared of the UFC also.

so who is the best than since he almost lost to crocop and this guy beat that guy and whatever, back up your posts with something better than that.other wise barnett beat randy and crocop beat barnett so crocop can beat randy according to your logic, and ricco beat randy and sylvia beat ricco but wait randy beat sylvia?your reasoning dose not stand up.

I don’t hate Fedor, it’s kind of like he’s on a circus road show, since they couldn’t find a respectable opponent they turned it into a spectacle, David VS Goliath… Silly, almost WWF feel to it.
If M-1 gets their shit together that will revive my interest. Fedor needs to fight a top heavyweight from the UFC that he has not fought … otherwise ‘YAWN’

Mugsy Boges vs. Fedor for the Heavyweight Championship.

Fedor will be fighting his toughest competition yet.

As a HUGE Fedor fan I am stunned. Choi is a great K-1 fighter, but WTF? I see Fedor not throwing a single punch, taking him down and getting a quick sub. And then what? Whoopdee-freakin-doo. As one of the Schmucks who checked the internet blogs every day this summer hoping for news of Fedor Vs. Couture I find my self becoming bitter over the prospect that all the Fedor haters have legitimate claim that he will never face top heavy weight opposition. Sigh.

He is a former pro athlete in a sport called basketball, and he is like 7’6". The funniest part about the comment was he competed in the stupid FOX Celebrity Boxing.
