UFC 78: Fighter paydays and salaries for 'Validation'

We're not going to get to see them, according to Nicholas Lembo, Counsel for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB).

Other states such as Nevada, California and Ohio, among others, often publish the fighter purses as a matter of public record following mixed martial arts (MMA) events. The NJSACB, however, cites confidentially concerns as the reason it has never released numbers nor will it for UFC 78: "Validation" this past weekend.

Remember that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, too, would not release the fighter payouts after UFC 69: "Shootout" in Houston on April 7, 2006.

However, during the post-fight press conference UFC President Dana White did announce individual bonuses for select bouts on the nine-fight card.

Here are the awards:

Fight of the Night: Thiago Alves vs. Chris Lytle ($55,000 each)
Knockout of the Night: Ed Herman ($55,000)
Submission of the Night: Akihiro Gono ($55,000)

Of course, these individual bonuses are in addition to the base salaries agreed upon in the fighters' contracts (The same base salaries the NJSACB will not release).

UFC 78: "Validation" took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N..J., on Saturday, November 17. For blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card action click here. For a recap of the pay-per-view (PPV) event peep this.

He got a very nice new contract after his fight with Jardine. The win share I’m sure would have been nice, but he isn’t going to starve.

Why do the athletic commisions get to publish the fighter salaries? I wouldn’t want my employer to publish my paystubs online. That would seem like a violation of privacy. But hey, what do I know.

He got schooled and exposed in MMA, a punchers chance only lasts as long as it takes him to find a chin that cantake it or another fighter who can smother it. Houston is truly one dimensional.
Did anyone ever see his first loss. The figth was on the ground and they got broken up to take it to the middle of the ring and retake positions, and Houston refused. He kept sayng he would not get back down into position. So after about 50 or 10 minutes of saying he would not get back down in botton position, the ref called the fight and he lost. With that right there should tell you what he is about. Great puncher with no ground game.

Houston is going to be on the radio here this afternoon so as soon as I can get a download, I’ll forward it on.

Houston didn’t look to be the same fighter as his last two fights, even as he was walking out the octagon. I want to know if his ground game is really that bad or is there an excuse?
Regardless, Silvas GnP was brutal.

Ohhhh, where are all the Houston A. nuthuggers, that guy sucks. Absolutely one dimensional, but I should thank him for the easy money in bets. At least he attacked the ref for saving his life instead of crying. He’s a real class act.

Those are actually some nice bonuses, for just mastering your profession.

by c-war on Nov 19, 2007 3:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Houston will still get plenty of fights becaue everyone likes seeing KO’s and as long as he rounds out his whole game he will still be a scary guy for anyone to get in the cage with. He really seems to be mainly a freakishly strong guy with good stand up. If that hadn’t gone to the ground I think he wiuldn’t won. Did you see that slam against Silva? It was more like a choke slam than an mma take-down.

Maybe Houston can rematch Jardine now.

I want Florian vs Edgar. or Edgar vs the Guida-Huerta winner for the next title shot.

I think Thiago Alves might have the best stand up in the WW division. Maybe even better than GSP.

If you knew a little more about what you were talking about, you would have mentioned that Houston refused to go back to the ground because his opponent was all greased up. They got into at a bar a week or two later and Houston handed his ass to him. Anyway, Houston certainly got found himself in a terrible position with Silva, but I don’t think there’s any shame in losing to the guy that was probably the best LHW on that card.

lol. Because it is public information. Public companies have to publish salaries. I work for JPM Morgan and my CEO’s salary is public knowledge to anyone in America.

By the way, it is 41 million.

I know that isn’t fair.

thanks spider and rubber duck man. It looks like thalves (sorry for butchernig his name) was using Alexander’s head as a basketball….Just bouncing that noggin off the canvas…love it.

P.S I think if Silva beats Chuck in December he is the next fight for Rampage, and if Chucks wins…well we all know what will happen. Then Rampage needs to add 1lb so he can fight heavyweight and then Dana will bring over Kimbo Slice to fight him. Oh and then I’ll part the waters too, but we can all dream right??

the UFC is not a public company, it’s privatly held. Private companies do not have to make salaries public.

H Alexander is a great, if he fights a guy who is purely standup. He will always have a punchers chance. But that’s it. Chalk him up with B Vera to overated fighters I finally dont have to hear about.

This card cost the UFC very little. UFC made a killing on this one. Forrest made only like $44,000 to fight Shogun and 44,000 for the win. I doubt bisping and Rashad’s base contracts are higher than 44,000 a fight, maybe 40,000. Also Tiago and houston dont make much. This card was very cheap, and so was the product.

Think back to how much UFC 76 cost

I think chuck made 250,000
so did shogun
Forrest 80,000
diego and fitch cost some money.

We better get the BJ penn vs. Stevenson event for free.

Violentmike: I am very happy that I didnt spend money to go.

The sad thing is Houston is 36 not 26. Could you imagine if he was 26. He would have so much time to develop and realise his potential. It takes a long time to become as well rounded as the elite guys. Still he’s an animal who could KO anyone in the blink of an eye.

I see where you’re coming from, but don’t forget Randy Couture was around 35 when he had his first fight, and he continued to improve throughout his career. Granted Randy is an olympic caliber athlete, but I’d be surprised if Houston doesn’t continue to improve as well.

DUDE! We all knew he had no ground game. I just love how you are literally asking for him to give an excuse, but when a guy like GSP or Ortiz says he was fighting hurt, they are poor sports.

With 55k someone can get a PS3…and even guitar hero 3. nice!

Violentmike: I am very happy that I didnt spend money to go.

Me too John, me too. A few days before the event I was looking on ebay to see what kind of seats were up there, and what they were going for. There was a bunch of floor seats. There were a couple of pairs of seats on the floor, 11th row. The face value was $503 each. And the buy it now price was $500 for the two tickets. That’s less than half price! I was actually thinking about going since the UFC won’t be back for like 3 more years, but I still didn’t think the card was worth $500.

Well, if Houston is a SMART fighter… he could’ve started nothing but bjj and wrestling on MONDAY and in 1 yrs time, be 37 with a good line of defense and some adequate offense.

There have been many fighters that degressed or left MMA because they didn’t work on their weakest areas, hope Houston isnt one of them.

It’s funny how a nobody can talk so much shit about a somebody. Houston got caught big deal, hes still knocked out two of the top UFC strikers. All the guys got to do is train more BJJ and he’ll be the champ soon enough. Plus the guys done more for the sport than a critic like yourself could, He knocks people the f*ck out, thats what people pay to see, they dont pay to see two guys rolling around on the ground, houston gives people what they pay 40$ to see, you sir dont do a thing, probably dont even train a martial art and even if ya did your not in the UFC so you still would have anything on houston because he’s here to stay.
