UFC 79: Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou booked to fight Lyoto Machida (Official)

It didn't fall through ... thanks heavens.Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (4-1) will make his Octagon debut against undefeated light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida (11-0) at UFC 79: "Nemesis" on December 29 at The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to UFC.com.

Here's a snip from UFC President Dana White on the fantastic acquisition of "The African Assassin:"

"Sokoudjou is an explosive athlete with heavy hands and great judo who is coming off huge back-to-back knockout wins over two top ten guys in Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Bringing him in just makes the stacked 205-pound division even stronger, and there are endless great matchups for him here in the UFC."

Amen.

Terms of the Sokoudjou contract were not revealed in the announcement. However, in our recent conversation with Team Quest representatives a multi-fight deal was in the works contingent on the former PRIDE FC knockout artist signing a bout agreement to fight Machida.

Since a technical knockout loss to Glover Teixeira at WEC 24: "Full Force" in October 2006, Sokoudjou has reeled off quick highlight upsets of two of the top 205-pound fighters in mixed martial arts.

He dropped Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (Big Nog's brother) in just 23 seconds at Pride 33: "Second Coming" and followed that performance up two months later with a quick stoppage of Ricardo Arona at Pride 34: "Kamikaze."

His rapid rise to stardom mirrors that of fellow UFC light heavyweight, Houston Alexander.

This match up will be interesting to say the least because Machida is on the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to fight style. He prefers to methodically pick his opponents apart, which often doesn't translate into exciting bouts. In fact, he is often referred to as a "boring" fighter.

That's something with which White seems rather aware.

Here's another snip:

"Machida needs to fight a guy who will come right after him, keep the pressure on him, and set the pace, instead of Machida setting the pace. Sokoudjou's that type of guy."

Machida has defeated Kazuhiro Nakamura (UFC 76), David Heath (UFC 70) and Sam Hoger (UFC 67) all via unanimous decision since his arrival earlier this year from the World Fight Alliance (WFA). He is also a veteran of the K-1 and Jungle Fight promotions.

He'll certainly be in for a good fight against the 2001 US Open Judo Champion on New Year's Eve weekend -- it's a great addition to an already great card.

“against undefeated light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida (11-1)”

What part about that doesn’t make sense?

The part where you corrected the typo.

great card

Machida will destroy Sokoudjou

I think so too. Soku was kind of an unknown when facing Nog and Arona. Now, everyone knows he has heavy hands, and Machida has the style and skill to deal with that kind of fighter. He’s gonna give Soku the same treatment he gave Rich Franklin.

Excited to see this one. Haven’t seen Machida fight yet, but he has some very impressive victories over Penn, Franklin and Bonnar. His last four victories have come by decision which is something Soko will test. Soko is good at finishing his fights. I hope Soko takes it to him. Should be a good one.

Machida should win on paper… but we’ll see how Soku transitions to the cage.. great matchup.

Great fight, hopefully we’ll see some of Soku’s judo in this one.

Here we go boys. Now this is a fight. I hate on Machida a lot on this site because he is a sometimes boring fighter, but Dana is right, Soko is the type of fighter that Machida needs to be matched up against. This will be a great fight and I am very excited about the whole event.

Serra vs. Hughes
Soko vs. Machida
wanderlei vs the iceman

Now this is a card. I only wish that they would have had this card in new jhersey… I would have paid anything to go see this. Now I might just have to open up my wallet and get my ass to Vegas.

I believe Soko will finish Machida. Soko’s hands are bricks, his leg kicks are amazing, he is a Judo champion and by the way he trains with Dan Henderson everyday. I dont see the octagon jitters affecting him. He broke into Pride as a relatively unknown and destroyed 2 top 10 fighters both from the Brazilian Top Team.

Soko was kind of like the Houston Alexander of Pride. I hope that he wins this fight so that he can climb the LHW latter, which would provide some very interesting match ups. If Soko and Houston win their next fights, I would like to see those 2 paired up against each other.

Dana has been taking a lot of heat as of lately and the Signing of Soko, was a very good move. Soko is a warrior, he wants no warm up fights, he isnt afraid and he wont duckl anyone. A perfect addition to the best division in the UFC. I would also like to see Soko destroy Tito… Wow, I am just sooo happy that this fight has been made official. Good work Dana.

Now just get Couture in the cage with Noguerra and everyone will get off your case and forget about the ugly ass situation between you and Randy.

In the words of Borat: very exciiiited!

I like Soko, but Machida is actually 10 times better than he appears to be. He could probably beat anyone he wants to.

A tough fight to call, basically depends on how fast the pace is during the fight. That ultimately will be the key. Whoever can better adapt to the pace set has the best chance of winning.

Machida needs to stay composed early if Rameau opens up with a flurry. Counter punching effectively seems to work for him. On the other hand, Rameau could stay at bay and try to lure Machida in and that could force him to make a costly mistake.

Either way I’d expect to get 1 1/3 rounds out of this fight. Looking forward to seeing who gets their hand raised.

Soko, Machida. Hmmm..Might be hard to call for a KO.
It’s not the ring anymore, it’s the Octo. So we’ll be able to see another transition From the Ring to the Octogon.
I wonder why Soko decided to sich what-ever..His talks with the UFC, were a while back, and nothing was generated from them..Now all of a sudden, Soko will sign anything..I guess Soko didn’t like the way his Mangt. Team was doing Bussiness for him???

by ntvman on Nov 15, 2007 11:35 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

machida by decision (again)

I am so excited that this is 100% fact. For those of you that haven’t seen Soko fight, go watch some! He is a monster with brick hands. I think that while Soko was signing the contract, there were two words running wild thru Dana White’s little bald head “Houston Alexander”.

I will for sure be rooting for Machida to get KTFO!

wow. this is a sick addition to an already stacked card. This card is rediculous.

I thought that the December card was going to be stacked as well. But the fact of the matter is that this is only the 3rd good fight on the card. Well, good isn’t the word, maybe I should reach into the bag of Joe Rogan adjectives and say that there are 3 phenominal match ups on this card. A dream match, a feud match for the belt, and a match up with a conflict in styles.

I mean, looking at the rest of the card, I can’t even see a fight that is worth being televised as part of the main card.

155 lbs.: Rich Clementi (28-12-1) vs. Melvin Guillard (20-6-2)
155 lbs.: Manny Gamburyan (5-2) vs. Nate Mohr (8-4)
185 lbs.: Dean Lister (9-5) vs. Jordan Radev (11-2)
170 lbs.: Roan Carneiro (11-6) vs. Tony DeSouza (10-3)
155 lbs.: Doug Evans (5-1) vs. Mark Bocek (4-1)

finally he signs
should be a great fight, will he conquer or be another pride guy with a loss in the ufc. i know he fought in a cage before but this is different u don’t have a 1ooo cheering you on but more like 17 thousand. i really don’t know who to pick but i will say in machida wins i think he should be a #1 or #2 contender to fight rampage

by bryant on Nov 15, 2007 12:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i’m really excited about the soko signing, he’s gonna be fun to watch, but i don’t think he’s going to beat machida…i know soko has shown some really nice ko power, but machida is one of the best at counter punching and taking aggressive stand up fighters out of their game with his stand up defense…soko could fall right into machida’s trap and get knocked out, i think dan henderson will try to have soko let machida come to him, but that might only frustrate soko and as soon as that happens, thats when machida capitalizes, i see either a late 2nd or early 3rd round (t)ko by machida or another decision, either way machida is too technical for soko…

They better show Melvin Guillard. He’s one of my favorites. He’ll KO Clementi within 3 minutes of the first round.

Soko’s standup has really improved. One of the guys in my gym beat him in a kickboxing match about 2 years ago, he got beat down, but the guy who beat him is a monster

So I’m not the only one that thinks Rogan short list of adjectives.

At least this card has some juice to it. I think Soko may take him but either way it’s bound to be a great fight.

pride fighters are doing fine in ufc rampage/silva and others plus the numbers won’t make a difference he fought in pride so 1000 in small cage 17000 in ufc and 80000 to 100000 at a pride event

YES! Finally it is confirmed! Another great fight to end this year off. Sokoudjou will really push Machida. We really haven’t seen any fighter push the pace on Machida. I honestly don’t know who will win this fight. Oh well. Who cares? It will be fucking awesome!

the reason you dont see fighters pushing the pace on machida is because he’s such a great counter puncher, he destroys guys that come right at him, soko will know this, he will be reluctant, at least early on, to push the pace against machida, trust me

I gotta show some Cameroonian pride on this one

Soko is the pride of Cameroon. Everyone from our country loves this guy and he is a real class act, I think that even from the international marketing stand point Soko will do alot to help the popularity of UFC in West Africa much like how Ike Quartey did with Boxing.

Good Luck Soko

I couldn’t’ve picked a better matchup. Maybe an exciting match between these two will get everyone to stop hating Machida. Then again, everyone is going to want to see Sokoudjou win and if Machida takes it it might just mean more crying. Don’t cry Machida haters, he’ll never beat BJ up again I promise.

I wonder what type of a deal he signed? I heard it’s a multi-fight deal..But what have they decided on Soko getting paid..It’s only intresting, b/c Soko was letting his Mangt. make the calls..Now Soko doesn’t even care what he’s signed. That was months ago..He will definately shake this devision up that’s forsure…ANd soko was quoted saying something about wanting to kick Rampage’s ass…Wow..Alexander-Soko..would equal great fight..

I currently take private lessons from Glover Teixeira. I’m still recovering from a simple body shot he hit me with during some VERY LIGHT sparring. I’ve been sore for a month. He is one mean MF and his ground game BJJ is second to none. He spars with Chuck Liddell weekly and can take a punch. Watch for him in the future. Mark my words, he just might be the next LH Champ. Go Pit Fight Team!

I agree. Machida already showed that he can deal with somebody who knows Judo as well. He got caught up in the clinch with Nakamura a few times and got the better of the exchanges. I just hope he finishes this time and shuts some of the haters up.

I reckon Machida is one of the top 205 pound fighter in MMA…
People say he is boring to watch?
but hasn’t anyone noticed his style, specially he’s left kick and how he can counterpunch his opponent…
and how he can constantly changes he stance, so he can keep his opponent guessing.
He is very smart fighter, Machida doesn’t take on much damages and he doesn’t get into unnecessary exchange.

Can’t wait till UFC 79, this is going be good match up, I like Soko too, but I think Machida will win this one.
