UFC 79: Eddie Sanchez vs. Soa Palalei
Eddie Sanchez (7-1) and Soa Palalei (8-1) will meet in a heavyweight bout at UFC 79: "Nemesis" on December 29, rounding out the blockbuster nine-fight New Year's Eve weekend pay-per-view (PPV) event.
This latest announcement has been confirmed via MMAWeekly.com. Reports of the match up surfaced in October with word that Palalei had inked a three-fight deal with Zuffa.
Sanchez is looking to string together back-to-back wins inside the Octagon for the first time in his career. He knocked out Mario Neto in his UFC debut in September 2006; however, he suffered a setback (or shell shock?) his next time out against Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 67: "All or Nothing."
The North County Fight Club-trained fighter weathered an early storm in his most recent bout against Colin Robinson at UFC 72: "Victory" in June, rebounding from a tough first round en route to a second round technical knockout stoppage.
Palalei is from Australia and currently trains with Dan Henderson at Team Quest. "The Hulk" competed in the PRIDE FC organization back in 2004, losing to Mu Bae Choi via submission (rear naked choke) in round two. Since that bout he has just one professional fight to his credit -- a knockout of Shaun Vanof during a King of The Cage (KOTC) event last month.
Don't be fooled by the relative inactivity ... there is still quite a buzz with the return of Palalei now that he is with a new camp that can equip him with the right tools to exceed his potential. For some video footage and background on Palalei click here.
Here is the complete UFC 79 fight card:
UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra (9-4) vs. Matt Hughes (41-5)
Chuck Liddell (20-5) vs. Wanderlei Silva (31-7-1)
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (4-1) vs. Lyoto Machida (11-0)
Rich Clementi (28-12-1) vs. Melvin Guillard (20-6-2)*
Manny Gamburyan (5-2) vs. Nate Mohr (8-4)*
Dean Lister (9-5) vs. Jordan Radev (11-2)*
Roan Carneiro (11-6) vs. Tony DeSouza (10-3)*
Eddie Sanchez (7-1) vs. Soa Palalei (8-1)*
Doug Evans (5-1) vs. Mark Bocek (4-1)** = unofficial

Overall though, a great card. 5 solid matches at the top of the list. Two great cards in 78 and 79. Although, if reality tv wasn’t the money making machine that it is, the Serra/Hughes fight could have easily been in the summer with GSP vs. the winner on 79…I try not to think about that though (but often fail).
As for this Sanchez fight, good to know that the 79 list is now complete, but other than that, I don’t care too much about this.

Overall though, a great card.
Agreed. I’d pay $40 just to watch Chuck and Wandi fight. Not to mention we get to see Hughes and Serra finally duke it out. Add in Soku-Machida and those three alone are worth the price.

A little off topic but Jordan Radev got smoked by Drew Mcfredies in his last bout and I want to see how he comes back from that one. That was the one with the three punches will he was already out.
Is it just me or does anyone else like watching the Lister fights? I hope this will be the swing bout and that we can catch it.

Excellent!!!!!! Now I’m ordering this PPV. Up until this fight anouncement, UFC 79 was going to be the first PPV in about 5 years that I didn’t order due to the weak card. But now that Eddie Sanchez if fighting, I’m thinking about not only ordering the PPV, but flying from CT to Vegas to see my idol fight live.
Eddie Sanchez, LOLOLOLOL
Like I said in the Sokodjou thread, there are only 3 SOLID fights. Provided, 1 of them is the fight we’ve wanted for 6 years, 1 of them is a heated feud bout that is being pumped up even more during this season of TUF, and the other is an excellent contrast in styles of two fighters trying to make a big name for themselves in the LHW division. But other than that, there isn’t much. The undercard and preliminary bouts for UFC 78 actually do look better than these. I would pay $40 just to watch Chuck/Wandy or $40 just for Serra/Hughes. So all the rest is just gravy. But, its that yucky gravy out of a can. Seriously, what is going to be the 4th televised fight, and which one will be the swing bout? My best guess is :
Rich Clementi (28-12-1) vs. Melvin Guillard (20-6-2)
Manny Gamburyan (5-2) vs. Nate Mohr (8-4)
But I fully expect Melvin to knock Clementi’s head clear off his body just like he did to that 40 year old karate kid. And Manny didn’t even win TUF. So his first fight doesn’t deserve to be on the main card of a PPV seeing that Nate’s fight was on an UFN.
Then there are these fights:
Dean Lister (9-5) vs. Jordan Radev (11-2)*
Roan Carneiro (11-6) vs. Tony DeSouza (10-3)*
Eddie Sanchez (7-1) vs. Soa Palalei (8-1)*
Doug Evans (5-1) vs. Mark Bocek (4-1)*
Jordan Radev can’t even protect himself the moment the bell rings, so everyone one of his fights should just be stopped before he gets seriously hurt. Forunately for him though, he’s fighting a ground guy in Lister. C’mon, is ANYONE here a fan of Roan Carneiro? The only thing Tony DeSouza has going for him is that he’s boys with BJ Penn and he looks like the Geico Caveman. Eddie Sanchez, please don’t get me started on him. He needs to go back to fighing at events held in High School gymnasiums so he can start winning again. Soa Palalei, ACTUALLY, I’d like to see him fight. Doug Evans and Mark Bocek just may turn out to be a good fight. But it won’t be televised, so it doesn’t even matter.

Anyone know anyone else worth mentioning that has come out of this “North County Fight Club”? I don’t know anything about this camp.

I hope the show the Bocek/Evans in the main card. I know neither of these guys are well known but I’ve seen them both fight and I think they’d put on a really great fight.

Eddie got the snot beaten out of him at 72. It was supposed to be a banker, an easy win instead he got his faced caved in until the old fat guy gassed (Much respect to Big C, put on a great show). I thought the UFC was going to drop him straight away. Guess he still has at least this fight before he moves to pastures afresh.

I agree with Violent Mike. Other than the 3 big fights with Matt(s), Chuck ‘n Wandy, and Soko-Machida, this really is a weak card. But I’m a Hughes Nut-hugger so to speak, never seen Soko fight, and never seen Machida be exciting. So it will be interesting to see if Soko pushes the pace and forces Machida to win anything but a decision. However, I think the Chuck-Silva fight will end up going the distance. Split decision for Chuck… And Hughes is going to rip Serra a new butt hole.

Eddie “the dirty” Sanchez, I will pay to see him fight, in his last fight I think he lost before he even steped in the cage. Back when crocop was the most feared stricker in the world. The good old days.
