out of all the unknowns with the upcoming UFC 78, the one thing you can count on is this fight not making it out of the first round

I think Silva is far more well rounded and experienced fighter His striking and stance is a lot more advanced, this for sure will be Houston’s biggest test at the same time silvas, i have to say Silva by ko

Rampage after this fight seems a liiittle soon.
Especially given the level of competition in the division at the moment.
Heck, besides Rampage we have Shogun, Wanderlei, Chuck, Hendo, Tito, Forrest, Jardine, Machida, Rashad and Bisping who are, as far as I’m concerned, ranked above him.

Silva has no chance, he’s in trouble for sure…

I wouldn’t go that far. Just because Houston is more popular and well-known doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll just run through an 11-0 fighter with a great camp.

This guy is my favorite fighter in the 205 lb division. Him and Wandy but we will see what wandy does in December, can’t wait. Maybe if houston totally destroys Thiago(he will) then this might put him in the top 5(it should).

I finally saw a Thiago Silva fight the other day on the net and I have to say I was not impressed. His strikes seem to lack power and he got tired. Yeah, he comes from a great camp and he’s undefeated but I don’t see him making it out of the first round with Houston. even if there is an upset, Houston has the attitude towards his fights that make him popular. The opposite of Tim Scardy cat sylvia. He will continue to have good fights reguardless of how this fight goes.

I think the voice is the same guy they hire for the PPV commercials on TV. I didn’t like it. They should get the Victoria’s Secret girl that says the poem-like speech in the new commercial. I could listen to her read Paradise Lost. I kind of like Mike Rowe, the Dirty Jobs guy that narrates TUF. In fact I’d take pretty much anyone except the guy they had do it.

by IceMuncher on Nov 14, 2007 6:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

You can’t help but love a guy with that kind of an attitude. He feels greatful to have the fans and success that he has right now. If AA or other currently “safe” fighters thought along those lines they’d be getting more fights right now too.

his attitude wins alot of respect. That and how he presents himself before and after a fight, for god sakes he’s a single parent, that’s hard enough already

I want the same thing but it would be a little premature, he’s got to fight a top 10 and a top 5 fighter to earn that shot.

He has fought top 10 in Jardine, who on MMA weekly is ranked at 6 or 7. He is explosive and , but like some of the others I want to see him in the champion rounds before I start touting him as the next big thing.
More importantly, I am amazed at how fast people have jumped on this guys “great attitude” and ‘presents himself after a fight." Doesn’t ANYONE remember him standing over Jardine’s limp body staring down at him?!? That was so disrepectful of ANY fighter (other than someone like Tito) to do. I like the way he fights, he is an absolute beast, but he definitely has areas in and out of the cage that leave me questioning. Time will prove him as either great, or just a flash in the pan

In my opinion Houston beating Thiago is an upset, Dont underestimate Silva he is the real deal. we still no nothing about Alexander, and the idea i have of him from his two fights, I’m not impressed, his stance is so amateur looking and he street brawls, there’s a lot of holes to work with there, I think if Silva bangs it out with him, silva will win, he has a good chin and his punches aren’t as tight, Alexander fights like he has no power unless he closes the gap, and still if he clinches with silva, silvas a chute box guy. To win he will have to take the fight to the ground were he risk getting submitted, this for sure is a test for both guys for different reason’s, is Silva strong enough to handle Alexander, And the big Question is Alexander ready for a guy as talented as Thiago!

by jsoph on Nov 14, 2007 7:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He already beat someone as good as silva. Keith jardine how can you even question the talent hes faced, Sakara isn’t a pushover by any means. The question is how will he fare as the figth goes past the 1st round

One last note. if he wins, i mean when he wins, he gets Forrest and winner gets rampage. Rampage needs some time to recover from his injury but when he does , theres gonna be fire works. Rampage is the only guy in the lightheavywiehgt division who can match Houston muscle for muscle.

since rampage needs time to heal lets give him till mid summer. that way we could have a jardine forrest rematch in early spring, with the winner fighting rampage in the summer.

that should give forrest’s scar tissue time to heal too.

Let’s not put the LHW belt on hold for 9 months. Rampage vs Forrest in the early spring, and give Houston someone else to fight for the #1 contender, probably the winner of Liddell vs Silva. Assuming Houston wins in impressive fashion of course.

Bad example of getting rocked ,concidering 2 seconds later Jardine was eating a steady diet of punches and knees. It looked more like he got pissed off, than rocked.

Thiago Silva has won his last 6 fights, each by KO or TKO, and 5 of the 6 were in the first round, the other one in the 2nd round. I’m looking forward to seeing Thiago shock the world and KO Houston Alexander. Its the UFC, you’d be fooling yourself if you think that cannot happen. It can happen, and it will happen.

by Cory on Nov 14, 2007 10:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

If Thiago comes in with a good gameplan, he wins IMO. But he has a tendency to just go into fights and bang and Chutebox never strategizes for their fighters. If he tries to stand and bang, I don’t think he’ll last long.

However, hopefully Team Link came up with his gameplan. If so I could see him taking Houston down and wearing him out.

by Dominic on Nov 15, 2007 12:15 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

thats the problem in thiago last fight he stood toe to toe with thomaz and he got rocked a few times. if does that on the 17th this fight will not last 2 minutes. Houston hits much harder, and theres footage to prove it.

I agree with you in the fact that people wanna see him in the later rounds, but if he ends up ending it in the first round again sooner or later he needs to get more respect. As for him being SO DISRESPECTFUL, he just knocked out KEITH JARDINE in his first fight in the UFC. You know he was brought in to lose to Jardine. Come on man, you want him to hold his hand until he regains consciousness? These are grown men beating each other senseless, if its too much for you to see someone standing over someone he just knocked out you need to go watch some WWE man

I agree with GoColts from his post. In response to him being SO DISRESPECTFUL, he just knocked out KEITH JARDINE! You know he was brought in to lose that fight. Houston knocks him out in his first fight in the UFC and stands over him and he’s disrespectful…? These are grown men knocking each other senseless and people are worried about him standing over him and yelling, give me a break. yes houston destroyed jardine after getting knocked down, but thats before everyone knew he was a monster in the clinch. i bet jardine would be the one to finish things differently if he had known and respected what houston is all about.

i also think rampage has good enough striking to knock houston out or at least make him keep the distance and pick him apart without letting him get to the clinch.

hopefully we will get to find out in late 08 or early 09

dude, what do you want him Houston to do? cry about it?

Houston: “oh crap, i just KO’d the guy, i should give him a hug now and apologize”

c’mon!

he came to FIGHT. Jardine dissed him and he was simply paying the Dean of “MEAN” back. heck, Jardine deserved every bit of it. you can’t come into the Octagon dissing any figher and thinking some fighter’s a push-over, even if he is an unknown. now that’s disrespect!

I respect Thiago’s fight game but Houston will put him to sleep. Why? Thiago was at one point a Chute Box trained fighter. Chute Box is known for their great clinch work. Therefore, Thiago will welcome the clinch. Some may say that the Clinch would give Thiago the advantage. It’s just the opposite. See, when a fighter closes the distance between himself & his opponent, he is neutralizing their punching power & substantially lowering the possibility of being KO’d. Notice how HA immediately closes the distance at the the 1st opportunity? By doing this he takes himself almost completely out of harms way. Now, how many MMA fighters have you seen with such vicious punching power from the inside the way HA has? If you can name any, you’ll probably count them all on the same hand. My point is that it’s rare in MMA today because fighters are not spot training to purposefully throw KO punches at close range. However, based on his past 2 performances, I’m willing to bet paper that HA is. So with that in mind, HA gains 2 distinct advantages, 1.) he closes the distance & thus creates a somewhat safe-zone for himself & thus minimizes the potential of getting himself KTFO. 2.) because he trains to throw power punches in the clinch & his opponent doesnt, he can confidently drop bombs with reckless abandon & shrug off any of the lighter shots his foe might land.
I will say that he has to watch out for the knees though. Spot training or not, anyones legs carry natural power & a Thai knee is extremely powerful, even moreso than a punch.
Also, be clear that I dont think that HA is unbeatable. I’m just stating my opinion on why i believe he will beat Thiago.

P.S.

Can we all please stop it with the “Anything can happen” talk? If we live & die by that motto then whats the point of being a fan? Why bother blogging or posting in forums? Why even follow the sport at all? With that attitude, you might as well skip the fights & read the results in the paper the day after. Some fighters are better than others but unfortunately the better fighter doesnt always win….we get it. But its no reason to stop rooting for your favorite, trying to change a fellow posters opinion on a fighter & enjoying a good debate.

by Machine on Nov 15, 2007 6:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I still want to see him fight Drew McFedries. I know he is not top ten, but he walked straight threw Sakaras’ punches, and Sakara was was bang on target for most of the fight, he just had no effect on McFedries, I couldn’t believe it he was like the terminator. I think it would be a very exciting fight with someone who can bang as well as take a take a punch. It would also test Houstons chin as well.
