UFC 80: Alessio Sakara vs. James Lee (Exclusive)

Light heavyweights Alessio Sakara (11-6) and James Lee (12-2) will throwdown at UFC 80: "Rapid Fire" at The Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England, on January 19, 2008.
MMAmania (www.mmamania.com) first learned about the match up earlier this morning from members of the Sakara management team. In addition, representatives indicated that this will be the last fight for Sakara at 205 pounds in the near future -- he plans to dip down to middleweight (185 pounds) regardless of the result in the United Kingdom.
It's been an up-and-down experience for the Sakara since his Octagon debut in October 2005. The Italian-born brawler has been unable to string together consecutive wins in six attempts (2-3 with one "No Contest). His last time out at UFC 75: "Champion vs. Champion" he got flattened by Houston Alexander in 61 seconds via technical knockout.
Without question this is a must-win for Sakara, which would also give him some momentum and confidence heading into his next fight at middleweight.
Lee is a UFC newcomer who has had tremendous success under the King of the Cage (KOTC) banner. In fact, in 14 professional contests not one of them has went the distance. He has a remarkable list of submissions to his credit and has never been stopped via strikes -- his two losses are via submission.

why do they keep bringing Sakara back?
I was thinking the same thing. The UFC should put him up against Mike Nickols and the two of them can have a tattoo showdown.

Now here’s a fight I have no interest in seeing.

i thought this guy was 185 when he fought lister and mcfedries? he looks soft at 205, he should be 185 anyways.

Speaking of dropping weight, that James Lee guy looks like he can make WelterWeight if he were to get in shape. Pudgy.

I hope Sakara has a good outing on this fight. I think he’s a good striker and a good fighter all around. I hope he can string a few wins together in the UFC.

Whoa! That is uncalled for. The difference in quality of tats is night and day. MNs tats look like he did them in the mirror, left-handed, at county lock-up… while drunk.
I like the idea of Legionarius at MW.

No doubt. I think his only sponsor is Playtex.

why do they keep bringing Sakara back?
Well they put him on this card because he is European.

I think with a few more tattoos Sakara would win for sure.

My thoughts exactly. I understand they like to bring in people who have some exposure already, but you need to balance it with the skill a little more. This guy is not good.

Alessio Sakara is a vicious talented boxer that holds titles in Italy. To say that he isn’t skilled is just foolish. He looked tough as nails against Houston Alexander. He just got clipped by another tough guy. No shame in that.
Alessio Sakara is a threat. That’s why the UFC is bringing him back. He’ll hit his stride, just sit back and enjoy it when he does. He’ll do what Vitor Belfort couldn’t.

I’ll still support Sakara. He’s got heart. He will win. Who the hell is Lee? This ain’t the Civil War!

Sakara has never fought at 185.
And I agree , I thought after his last loss he would be gone for sure.. Did he ever even throw a punch at Houston or did he just run in with his hands up?

Light heavyweight, middleweight it doesn’t matter cuz Sakara will get his ass handed to him either way. What does the UFC see in this guy?
by Nine Duce on Nov 12, 2007 5:02 PM EST reply actions
Ya’ll are nuts haha. Just watch Sakara throw hands, and if you know anything about fighting, you can tell he’s dangerous. I’d love to see him in there mixing it up at 185 with guys like Joe Riggs, Robbie Lawler, and Phil Baroni. SLUGFESTS.

Baroni I agree… I am not ready to give up on Sakara yet either. Everyone always loves a talented striker. Alessio is a banger who is gonna stand in striking distance and bang it out, you are bound to get clipped but so what. He will come into his own and become a tough fighter especially at 185.
Hows this for a match up for you all….. Sakara vs. Bisping at 185lbs, but not in England, I never want to see Bisping fight in England again…. so that the whole Hamil thing cant happen. Everytime bisping wins a decision in England I am gonna have to hear all your conspirocy theories for a month…No thanks…Keep Bispings fights in Vegas.
Sakara vs. Bisping both fighting at 185 for the 1st time would be really interesting……I wouldn’t be shocked to see SAakara KO the count!
Can someone please give me a freaking Dan Henderson Update. Anyone know if Diego Sanchez is still alive? I havent herd his name since september. Also can I get a John Fitch and Koschek update? Is Arona in the UFC or what? Whens Rampage gonna be ready to fight?
By the way wanderlei training with Couture = a whole lot of trouble for the Iceman!

I have to say the only thing good about this guy at the moment is his tatoos, there pretty cool.
Maybe he has mafia connections and Dana is worried that if he gets rid of him, he might end up with a horses severed head in his bed when he wakes up in the morning.

Actually, I believe I read (probably on this site) that Sakara’s boxing exploits in Italy were exaggerated. He’s still got good hands, though, and he’s supposedly working his BJJ pretty hard. I think he has potential if he got his head together and used a more well-rounded style – but at 2-3-1 in the UFC, the notion of “potential” has just about expired. Sakara’s going into his 7th fight with the UFC – that’s more UFC fights than many established contenders. It’s not like I’ve ever rooted against the guy, but I can’t see why he’s still around, other than to court the European market.

That would be an interesting fight, John. I see Sakara having the better hands than Bisping, but Bisping has the better kicks. As far as wrestling and ground game goes, that’s up in the air. If they were to fight, I wouldn’t expect to see the fight hit the ground unless on of the two fighters were getting completely dominated on the feet and had no other option than to take the fight to the ground. Bisping and Sakara share one common opponent – Elis Sinosic. Everyone remembers Bisping finishing Elvis in the 2nd round, and in his first UFC fight, Sakara won a decision against Elvis. I can see their fight going either way.

But Bisping is definitely the better finisher in my opinion, when compared to Sakara.

Alessio Sakara is the shit.I see him train down here in miami all the time. excellent hand speed, brutal strenght, and this mma/ground game is great.Plus he is a Italian from Roma and no one can beat us.That loss to ALexander was a respectable loss i mean they guy is a maniac. But Alessio wasn’t himself in that fight.Wait till this fight coming up. U will see the real Alessio and then you will see why the UFC wants him on fight cards.FORZA ITALIA…

Sakara may not have the best record in the UFC but he is a devastating striker who makes good fights, i believe he will hit his stride at Middle weight and string together some good wins against decent opponents. He may even give Anderson Silva a run for his money stand up wise, Sakara reminds me of a young yet slighty not as good Vitor Belfort who has yet to get his wins going, but the potential is still there. Check out his fights with Victor Valimaki and Drew Mcfedries to see his real skills. Also, now that he is training with American Top Team rather than a crappy Italian MMA club he will probably come to fight in shape and ready to bang. Prepare to be impressed at UFC: 80.
